Assassins in Edinburgh. A Russian crime boss. A potential gang war.

Realising a mysterious stranger is tracking them, they return to the scene of one of the murders in a bid to find out why.

Meanwhile, bent cop Rebecca McKenzie has problems of her own to deal with in Inverness when a familiar face turns up at police headquarters. Brought in to take charge of the McMullen murder, the new man has an agenda that has nothing to do with solving a crime.

I have read all of the Relic Black series from the very first novel, Terminal Black and enjoyed them all. This is the latest in the series and did not disappoint me. As usual the storyline is excellent, with some darkly humorous scenes and some very witty dialogue.

Having progressed through the series from a petty thief to his new position of trainee assassin in Chrissy Ridley’s organised crime gang, Relic has now been paired up with Astrid, the Norwegian assassin. Just as well for Relic, for when they are sent to Edinburgh to carry out two contracts, they soon find themselves coming up against a formidable foe, the elusive Captain Green, who enjoys impaling his victims with a baseball bat sharpened to a point. With gang warfare between two rival Edinburgh gangs added to the dangers Relic and Astrid face, they’ll need all their combined skills to survive.
I’m not going to give the plot away, but it kept me guessing right up to the last few pages, whether Relic and Astrid would be able to eliminate Captain Green, or would they end up on the end of one of his sharpened baseball bats. Well done, Mr Garrow on yet another excellent novel. I look forward to reading the next novel of Relic's adventures.

Note of warning to readers. There are adult themes running through the novel and strong language. Nothing gratuitous however, or which offended me.

Lethal Black is book five of the Relic Black series of thrillers and is as enjoyably hard hitting and fast paced as the other four books. I’m glad to report my favourite characters re-emerged as strong as ever. The author doesn’t waste any time recapping what’s happened in previous books, so the reader must keep their wits about them if they haven’t read the earlier books. Luckily, having read all the previous fast action thrillers, I was soon up to speed, eyes wide as the various gruesome killings take place. After all, Relic Black is a hitman, if a somewhat reluctant one.

No time is wasted with Relic analysing his motivations or other such nonsense that would slow down the book’s pace. It’s action, action, action all the way. If you’re looking for a well-written, adrenaline-pumping thriller with many pockets of wit, dry humour, and occasional pathos, Lethal Black is it. A well-deserved five-stars.
