I came to photograph a legend…and wind up stuck in Montana’s most infamous haunted attraction.
Wolfe Marsden doesn’t do cameras. Or interviews. Or strangers. Especially not strangers with a lens aimed at his masked face.
He’s a towering hunk of gruff, muscled mystery, with the kind of scars you only earn from fighting for your country.
And I’m drawn to him in ways I don’t understand.
I was supposed to keep it professional…snapping a few shots, and landing the magazine cover story.
But the longer I’m trapped in this Gothic mansion under Wolfe’s steely gaze, the more I want to peel away his armor—and not just the mask.
One hot night. One raging storm. And one man who’s going to make sure I know exactly what happens when you tempt the Beast of Marsden Manor.
Spooked is a short, steamy, instalove romance set in the small town of Deepwood Mountain, Montana. It features a scarred veteran and a spirited photographer and some serious Beauty and the Beast and Phantom of the Opera vibes. Happy Halloween! 🎃
He’s the Beast behind a mask. She’s the journalist who sees the man beneath it.
When photojournalist Ash arrives at Marsden Manor for a Halloween feature, she expects cheesy scares, not a reclusive war veteran who crafts darkness into art and hides behind a mask he refuses to remove. Wolfe is guarded, intense, and clearly not interested in being exposed. But when a storm cuts them off from the world, they are forced into close quarters and something unexpected begins to crack through the silence.
Ash isn’t easily rattled, and the more she sees of Wolfe’s world, his haunted creations, his loyalty, his quiet pain, the more she sees the man beneath the legend. What starts as tension laced with mistrust shifts into something charged and intimate. Connection builds in stolen glances, shared space, and quiet moments that start to mean more than either of them expects.
But trust is fragile, and fear doesn’t vanish just because love shows up. When everything teeters on the edge, Ash has to prove her intentions and Wolfe has to decide if he will let himself be seen for real. What they have started won’t survive if they both don’t choose it. Together.
Ash learns that success isn’t just about the perfect shot, it’s about risking her heart. Wolfe starts to believe he is more than the scars he wears. Their bond grows from guarded tension to raw honesty, layered with heat, vulnerability, and a quiet kind of hope that refuses to fade.
A steamy, instalove, age gap, mountain man, grumpy sunshine, scarred hero, forced proximity, small town Halloween romance with strong Beauty and the Beast and Phantom of the Opera vibes, exploring love, trauma, trust, identity, vulnerability, healing, and redemption. It’s about confronting the pain you hide, embracing vulnerability, second chances, and finding love and acceptance that holds steady in the face of scars.
Spooked hit me right in my sweet spot—a broody, scarred veteran hiding in a Gothic mansion, and a spirited photographer who can’t resist digging deeper. The setup had me hooked instantly. I loved the atmosphere Lexi Hayes created—it’s got just the right mix of small-town charm, Halloween chills, and those delicious Beauty and the Beast vibes. Wolfe Marsden stole the show for me: gruff, scarred, and mysterious in all the right ways. Every time his mask slipped (figuratively and literally), my heart did that little flutter thing. The chemistry? Instant and fiery. That one stormy night had me fanning myself and grinning at the same time—it’s instalove done right, with all the heat and tenderness I want in a short, steamy read. And can we talk about the haunted attraction setting? Perfectly spooky without losing the romance. It gave me just enough gothic shivers while letting Wolfe and the heroine’s connection shine. By the end, I wasn’t just cheering for their HEA—I wanted to re-read it with a pumpkin spice latte in hand and a thunderstorm outside. This is the kind of cozy-meets-sexy holiday special I’ll come back to every fall. If you like scarred heroes, spirited heroines, and a dash of Halloween magic, Spooked will be your next guilty pleasure. 🎃.
Photojournalist Ash is looking down the lens at a piece that could make her career: the story of the popular horror house Marsden Manor and its reclusive owner/creator. Wolfe Marsden, who was left scarred by an act of heroism more than a decade earlier, agreed to the piece very unhappily, so when Ash shows up early, he’s ready to push her back out the door. However, a sudden storm renders her retreat impossible, so Wolfe is forced to host her overnight. As she meets his friends/employees, she starts to form a picture of the man behind the mask covering half his face. When that mask slips, she finds him even more beautiful than she first thought. However, Wolfe doesn’t believe a woman like Ash could love “The Beast.” Can she prove to him that she sees a man and not a monster?
This is the perfect story to get you in the mood for Halloween, with a Phantom of the Opera/Beauty and the Beast vibe. Marsden Manor is a haunted house, but it’s also a home haunted by a man who hides from the world. I loved that Ash was able to breathe new life into Wolfe, to show him that happiness and love were waiting for him just beyond the shadows.
I liked the cast of side characters, especially Ghost, whose blunt honesty was exactly what Wolfe needed (but didn’t want) to hear, and I was thrilled to see familiar faces as well. The descriptions of the various horror rooms were so full of vivid details, it was like walking through them myself. (If the manor was real, I’d be hopping on the next plane to Montana.) The steam was on point as usual and I loved the happy epilogue.

Is he brave enough to let her look at the man beneath the mask?
Ash Vaughn is a photographer for "Thrill Seeker Magazine." She's come to Deepwood Mountain, Montana, to do a story. She arrives a day early at the Marsden Manor. It's a sprawling Victorian Gothic monstrosity built by an earlier member of the Marsden family. She thinks it looks as if it came straight out of the "Rocky Horror Picture Show." XThe mansion is currently owned by Wolfe Marsden. He's a decorated Army Ranger, a business owner who avoids most people, and the owner of the most successful haunted house attraction in the Northwest. Many call him the Beast of Marsden Manor. He lives there with Ghost, a former member of Wolfe's squad who Wolfe saved. Lee, the groundskeeper who tended to the manor when Wolfe was away, is also the cook. Howie is a young special effects wizard. Last, but not least, are the business manager, Devin.
Wolfe isn't happy that she's here to write a feature about the mansion and even more unhappy that she arrived a day early, but he's most unhappy that a sudden storm will force her to stay overnight. XWhen Ash first sees Wolfe, she can't help but think "Phantom of the Opera." He's an honest-to-God hero who threw himself on an IED while in Afghanistan to save members of his squad. Despite his own wounds, he was still able to carry two of his men to the medevac. The left side of his face, neck, shoulder, and his left arm were all badly damaged and burned. His Phantom-type mask covers his horribly burned and scarred face. When one of the special effects designed by Howie goes awry, Wolfe's mask comes off in front of Ash. She helps him put it back in place. It's the first time ever since he was scarred eleven years ago that someone has seen his face without flinching, grimacing, or looking away in horror.
As far as Ash is concerned, she sees who Wolfe actually is, rather than what he looks like. It's not necessary for him to wear his mask when he's with her. Other than with his friends at the Manor or medical personnel, no one has seen him without his mask.
She returned home to review her photos and submit them for publication. It was early morning, and she was extremely tired. That was when she accidentally submitted a photo of Wolfe, a photo that was to be only for her—not for publication. Wolfe knew about it before she did. No wonder he's angry about it, but the betrayal is the worst feeling ever for him!

Working at Marsden Manor, the professional haunted house in the book, would have been my dream gig back when I worked in theatre. I was absolutely fascinated by the art that goes into making a haunted manor be haunted but not kitschy. The whole book could have gone the wrong way into camp, but skillful writing and restraint made this book artistic rather than ridiculous. The romance itself was lovely. Very Phantom of the Opera brought into modern day. Wolfe, the hero, is a true military hero who was scarred by an incident in which he saved lives at cost to himself. He’s also very real and very creative. Normally, I don’t like stories about photojournalists (or journalists period) because they are predictable and very cookie cutter. Indeed, the only predictable part of the story involved her career as a journalist. But Ash was not a stereotypical character and was very warm and human. All of the characters were remarkably distinct and original for such a short work. Holla for nonbinary rep. I was very impressed by this story and I have no hesitation in recommending it. A few quick stats: MMC/FMC- Wolfe and Ash Genre- Holiday Romance Heat- open door, explicit, celibate hero Safety? Y Tropes- Beauty and the Beast, Phantom of the Opera, Haunted Mansion, Found Family, Photojournalist, Instalove, Halloween, Forced Proximity.

Zombie Turkeys and every beast deserves a happily ever after
Spooked is the fourth book in the Deepwood Mountain Holiday Specials series. This story is a fun read with wacky characters that you end up wanting more of. Ash Vaughn is a photojournalist who has come to Deepwood Mountain for her latest assignment for Thrill Seeker Magazine. She is there to photograph and write a story about the most notorious haunted attraction, Marsden Manor, and it's notorious and secretive owner, Wolfe Marsden. Ash shows up a day early which puts everyone at the manor off their game. But Wolfe is knocked even further off his game because of his immediate and intense attraction to the curvy Ash. She feels an immediate pull to Wolfe but also puts up a fight as he tries to boss her around. A storm hits the area with the bridge washed out and everyone must stay in the manor. Even though Ash has been told not to explore on her own she just can't help herself to some areas, which includes Wolfe. But Ash is there for a job, which may just make her career break open if she gets it right. So what happens when Wolfe opens up and lets Ash really see him, vulnerabilities and all? Will one mistake cost them everything? I loved this book. The story is spooky, had me laughing out loud, wondering what was going to happen next, and completely hooked all the way to the end. I also liked the hook of the Beauty and the Beast kick with a lot more than a talking teapot.
Lexi Hayes’ Spooked is a wickedly delicious Halloween treat—dark, sultry, and brimming with Beauty-and-the-Beast tension that had me hooked from page one.
Ash arrives in Deepwood Mountain with her camera ready to capture a legend, not to be swept into the shadows of Marsden Manor. But the moment she crosses paths with Wolfe Marsden—a scarred, brooding veteran who hides behind his mask and his walls—her story shifts. He’s gruff, guarded, and magnetic in a way Ash can’t ignore. When a storm traps them together, their simmering attraction explodes into something fierce and unforgettable.
What I loved most was how this short, steamy romance wove Gothic atmosphere with genuine vulnerability. Wolfe may see himself as a beast, but Ash doesn’t just look at him through her lens—she sees him, scars and all. And in one charged night, they both discover that some connections feel fated, even when they begin in the unlikeliest of places.
Spooked is sexy, atmospheric, and addictive—the perfect Halloween read to devour in one sitting. If you crave Phantom of the Opera shadows, Beauty and the Beast passion, and an instalove romance that feels both fiery and tender, Ash and Wolfe’s story will haunt you long after the last page. 🎃.

Oh this was a lot of fun! An interesting take on Beauty and the Beast. Wolfe is a veteran, scarred inside and out. He thinks he's too hideous, and makes himself masks to cover the half of his face that's disfigured. He lives in his family's mansion in Deepwood Mountain, having turned it into a very successful haunted attraction. People call him The Beast. Ash is a successful photojournalist, and when her editor gave her the assignment to do a piece on Marsden Manor and it's reclusive owner, she jumped at the chance. She wasn't sure what she expected to find, but the reality was beyond her imagination. This was a tantalizing story, with a reclusive beast of a man and the fearless woman who slipped past his defenses. There were also lots of fun side characters who helped push him out of the darkness he wallowed in, and into the light. Well, as light as a haunted house gets!

This short story is dual POV, well written and edited, and a fast-paced, sweet and steamy, contemporary Halloween romance between Ash, the female photojournalist lead, and Wolfe, the male scarred ex-military veteran and current special effects artist. I adored Ash’s artistic eye that saw Wilde’s physical scarring without being distressed. I enjoyed the way she pushed Wolfe to become comfortable with his body now. I enjoyed the way Wolfe had created a space for himself through his work and adored seeing him become more than an actor in his own life. I enjoyed the steamy intimate scenes. I enjoyed the supportive and engaged secondary characters and the relationships built between Ash’s friends and Wolfe and his friends.

A Hauntingly Beautiful Fun Size (Quick Read) Halloween Romance!
Spooked is the perfect mix of mystery, emotion, and slow-burning attraction in a snack size package. Wolfe and Ash’s story had me hooked from the first flash of the camera to the last flicker of candlelight. Lexi Hayes blends Beauty and the Beast allure with Halloween chills, creating a story that’s both heartwarming and deliciously atmospheric.
Wolfe’s quiet strength and Ash’s creative spark make an unforgettable pair—two souls finding light in the shadows of a stormy Montana night. This short, steamy novella delivers cozy gothic vibes, emotional healing, and just the right touch of Halloween magic.
Perfect for anyone who loves scarred heroes, haunted settings, and romance that glows even in the dark.

A touching and emotional tale that was such a moving and satisfying read. Ash is a professional photojournalist sent to write a story about Wolfe’s popular haunted house attraction. But Wolfe, a military veteran who was injured in a selfless act of saving others, hides behind a mask, figuratively and physically. Ash can see Wolfe for what he is - an artist and war hero whose life and body has been honed by honor and bravery. Wolfe’s friends provide him protection but are not afraid to challenge his beliefs, urging him to take a chance on his feelings for Ash. Her acceptance frees him in a beautiful and profound way. Perfect blend of found soul mate and steam.

Ash Vaughn is a photojournalist who is assigned to do a shoot for the haunted attraction Marsden Manor. Wolfe Marden “The Beast” of the Manor is the reclusive, private owner and is wary and angry that Ash has shown up early. There is a horrible storm and the bridge washes out causing her to have to stay the night. These two begin to get close and begin to develop feelings for each other. Just when Wolfe lets his guard down a mistake may cost these two everything. This was such a sweet short read. Wolfe is a wounded, scarred hero most people fear him but not Ash. Ash stands up to him, with her spitfire attitude and shows him, he is worthy of love.

I wish this place was real. This is a Deepwood Mountain Halloween special with Willa and Dash coming in with short cameos because Ash is Willa’s best friend. You will love Ash for her total honesty, go grab it attitude, good humor, and the inability to follow rules. These characteristics are what Wolfe needs as the “beast” of Marsden Manor which is a haunted mansion run by him and his loyal friends, to realize he doesn’t have to hide anymore. The interactions are priceless, the scenes are set in the beauty of a wild raging storm, and you are kept on the edge of your seat by the underlying currents of chemistry just waiting for the crash to come. "This is my honest review of an advanced reader copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily."
Halloween romance. Ash is a young photographer who has to photograph a haunted mansion that opens its doors for Halloween and its owner, whom everyone calls the Beast. She didn't expect to get stuck in the middle of a storm with him, let alone to give in for him. Wolfe, a former soldier, returns to his hometown after a weapon injury that deformed half of his face. He always hides behind nothing, a half mask. But when he sees the beautiful Ash, he wants to be able to show himself to her but remains wary because of his job. Will Ash and Wolfe have a beautiful story or will Wolfe not be able to trust the beautiful Ash….

Great behind the scene's Halloween story reminiscent of Beauty and the Beast in many ways. Wolfe, a scared and isolated ex-soldier, ran a haunted mansion attraction that allowed him to lean into his comfort zone. Ash, a photojournalist, challenged his beliefs about how others could see him, whether he agreed with her was up for debate. The cast of supporting characters (Dev, Ghost, Howie and Leo) were all integral in the story in their own way, particularly Ghost and Howie. I loved the way serious content was paired with lighthearted, uplifting content, never letting the story get too bogged down or emotionally entrenched.

SPOOKED is part of the Deepwood Mountain Holiday Specials. It's a short and steamy, instalove, OTT, opposites-attract, grumpy-sunshine, forced-proximity, curvy girl gets her mountain man Halloween romance. Ash is a smart, sassy, and curvy photojournalist. Wolfe is a hunky, grumpy, scarred, reclusive, ex-military man who now runs a famous haunted house. When Ash shows up a day early to start on her exclusive story, Wolfe is upset, but a storm is coming and she has to stay. He wears a mask across half his face due to the scarring. But Ash sees past that to the witty, intelligent, handsome man he is. Things get hot and steamy, until a mistake causes trouble. Can she show him that she is all in? These two had insane chemistry and we got a great HEA after some minor angst. I loved it.
This was such an intense treat. We get into the world of Wolfe, and the most famous Haunted mansion and the journalist sent to cover the story. Wolfe has his reasons for his grump, but boy is it intense.
Ash knows there is certainly a story at this house, and getting there early and getting stuck overnight sorta changes her life in a way even she wasn't expecting. There is this magic around the holiday that seems to seep into Wolfe and Ash. She breaks through the gruff exterior and that there can be mor to life that exsisting.
Wolfe has an amazing and funny group of men who work in the Manor. They are lifelong friends, humor filled and dedicated to making their Manor the spookiest it can be. It's got love, steam, laughter, and a not so spooky HEA!
An amazing story of love and healing. Wolfe is the “beast” of the haunted mansion. A veteran who is a hero who doesn’t think he deserves love because of the scars he bears on the inside and the outside. He covers up the scars playing into the monster, only to have a photojournalist see him for what he really is. She is not afraid or disgusted by the scars, she finds them as evidence, of the bravery and sacrifice. She makes him see that he has been hiding behind the mask for too long and has forgotten the hero is not the monster.

I loved Spooked by Lexi Hayes. It was definitely treat not trick! Ash had the opportunity of a lifetime when you was chosen to photograph Marsden Manor and interview the Beast Wolfe. Scarred from his time in the military Wolfe hides behind a mask and a grumpy attitude so no one can see his face or get close. He spends his days running Marsden Manor and making it the best haunted mansion possible. But what happens when Ash sees the man behind the mask? They have insane chemistry but will Wolfe take a chance? Definitely recommend!.

This was an enjoyable novella. I liked that the main characters, Wolfe and Ash, were both adults and it wasn’t yet another age gap romance. I thought the author’s writing style was good and the story was intriguing. I do think it would have benefited from being longer. I felt everything was too condensed and rushed. Insta-love is fine, but I really would have enjoyed seeing the story fleshed out more. But if you’re looking for a sexy read centered on the Autumn season this one should do the trick.

Ash is headed to the mysterious Marsden Manor to take photos of the manor in all its spooky glory and the reclusive man behind the magic. Wolfe is not happy she’s there before her schedule visit and when Mother Nature adds her influence they are forced to make it work. It’s beautiful and the way Ash sees Wolfe is something truly special. It’s a story that sucks you in and keeps you from going to bed at a decent hour. I absolutely loved this story and their HEA is beyond perfect.

When 'Phantom of the Opera' gets a wonderful, joyful ending, you can't help but feel happy! Ash has a photo assignment to capture moments at Marsden Manor, a gorgeous Gothic mansion famous for its spooky haunted experiences on Halloween. The owner, Wolfe, inherited the mansion after being medically discharged from the military. This story is truly captivating and will draw you in from the very first page. It's sweet, steamy, with charming characters you'll love. I definitely plan to read this book again soon!

Wolfe Marsden, a scarred veteran dubbed the Beast of Marsden Manor, hides from the world. Ash Vaughn, a spirited photographer, sees past his mask to the man beneath.
Beauty-and-the-Beast vibes, haunted house chills, and soulmate-level passion make this unforgettable.
I loved this gothic version of a beauty and the beast tale sprinkled with a healthy dose of phantom of the opera vibes. It's haunting and beautiful, and pits motive against action when it comes to getting the story of the beast of the manor. But watching the love between these two blossom was amazing and watching Wolfe come out of his mask and face the world was the most beautiful part of the story.

Spooked is simply awesome! I love Lexi Hayes’ magical mystical beauty and the beast retelling. The setting is spectacular, Wolfe’s history is heartbreaking and powerful, and Ash’s soul is on point. A perfect match for Wolfe, I loved her viewpoint and her ability to show Wolfe how she sees him. This sweet love story had me hooked from the opening line to the last word, and I’ll definitely read it again and again.
