Sweet Nightmares

Rate this book
She was prophesied to destroy an evil god, but she becomes his minion instead.

Jane Whitfield rose from nothing to become the youngest Prima Ballerina in the history of the Royalle Ballet—despite having a violent husband three decades her senior. But her carefully choreographed world shatters when her husband’s enemies come to collect his debts. Jane is tortured into making an impossible die, or strike a bargain with an evil god trapped inside a mirror.

Nightmare is ancient, cruel, and feared for a reason. He trades magic, wealth, and knowledge for soul-crushing costs—and he believes Jane is the witch destined to destroy him. But instead of killing her, he toys with her, offering a twisted sell her soul, serve him, and receive an endless supply of riches—enough to satisfy her wretched husband and his debtors.

Now bound to a god who revels in ruin, Jane becomes more than just his minion—she’s his growing obsession. But obsession doesn’t spare her from his darkness. He’s evil. She’s supposed to hate him, but the more time she spends in his realm, the harder it is to tell if he’s her monster… or her salvation.

She was destined to destroy him, but love might destroy her first.

Sweet Nightmares is an adult romantic fantasy Prequel/Sequel novel to Gilded Wicked Mirrors. It can be read first, or after GWMs. It is a touch-her-and-die, villain romance perfect for lovers of the Hades and Megara dynamic or fans of Kingdom of the Wicked. It is not a standalone.

Hazel St. Lewis is a Northern California-based Romantasy author. Diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, she struggled to read and write, but fantasy stories inspired her to start storytelling. Unfortunately, now, she is a little too obsessed with morally grey characters. When she isn’t writing, she can be found playing with her hoard of cats (too many to count…it’s a problem), singing songs to said cats—like Cinderella—or painting.

thank you sooo much to the author for an early copy!! all opinions are my own!

if i have to describe this book in a word, it would be heartbreaking 😭😭
really??? did Jane really deserve all this suffering??? her story had me on the brink of tears almost the entire time, feeling super bad for her and without a sliver of hope. trigger warning for abuse, mentioned rape, a looot of gore and death and just darkness overall. i loved though how she never gave up and found reasons to continue, and grew to always want to be free. i'm honestly so excited for her story to continue because she deserves so much more. and Nightmare, i hated and loved him at the same time, he is a character that had me in the middle, super mysterious but also saving Jane whenever she needed. also, he knows his stuff and took care of her, which i appreciate because she deserved it.
so yeah, go pick it up, despite the fact that it will leave you wanting more of this universe and its wicked gods 😱😱

Ohhh how I loved this book!

If you read Gilded Wicked Mirrors, you already know how this book was going to end, but it wasn't necessarily the ending that matter, but more so how we got there.

Jane always knew that she was going to have a horrible death at a young age. She wasn't sure how she knew it, just always had a feeling about it. She was orphaned at a young age, and then when she was old enough, she was married off to an abusive man twice her age. Through all the heartache, and horrible things her husband put her through, Jane always had a love for dance. But one day her husband's debt collector's came knocking and forced her to bargain with a Mirror for riches beyond their wildest dreams. However, Jane has to make the deal the Nightmare - perhaps one of the most scary mirrors to make a deal with. When Jane walks into the mirror she isn't prepared for what, or who meets her. Nightmare is truly a nightmare, but he isn't as bad as her husband or his debt collectors. So they made a deal, and Jane ends up staying with Nightmare more often than not. The book spans over years of her life, and through those years we start to see connections to not only Gilded Wicked Mirrors, but also clues that Hazel's other books are all connected.

I LOVED this book. Nightmare? He can come haunt my dreams any time. I also loved how resilient Jane is. She constantly had wrenches thrown in her path, but she constantly got back up and tried to keep going. This book had helped so many small pieces from GWM click into place, I want to go back and do a reread of it to see what else I can pick up on.

As always, I can't wait for more in this series/universe!

It was okay pretty short but a little underdeveloped, things happened so fast, I might just like longer books. However it was quite an addicting story but there was not a whole lot to the characters and the way events unfolded felt a little unnatural .

i’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again: the worlds Hazel creates are my favorite. If you’ve read Gilded Wicked Mirrors, you know the fate that awaits you, but it is so worth every second. It’s hard to describe just how immersive and complex this world is, filled with wicked gods trapped in mirrors, and for those willing to pay a price, you can have just about anything, but it all depends on what you are willing to bargain. For Jane it’s everything, and in return she is thrust into the dark world run by Nightmare. I loved Jane in GWM, and getting to know her backstory was everything I hoped it would be. This book takes you back to the start of her bargains, and you get to see everything play out. Jane is such a beautiful character, and your heart will just break for her and all she had to endure. Trigger warnings for sure, but Hazel does such a fantastic job of never letting her characters lose their power. The way she doesn’t give power to the abusers, and we get to watch Jane become an incredible being. And then there is Nightmare, oh Nightmare! I found him so intriguing before, and god help me, I love a villain DADDY! The tension between him and Jane had me screaming, and that slow burn was everything. I love his unwavering indifference and deep passion. He was so infuriating at times, but I’m obsessed. His dichotomy of being gentle when needed but rough at other times is perfection, and I, for one, need more. I was obsessed before, but now it’s not a want; it’s a need. I NEED MORE.

4.5 ⭐️

This one is a seductive descent into shadow and survival, and bébés I was hooked from the first cracked reflection.

St. Lewis gives us Jane who has been shattered and sculpted by cruelty—a prima ballerina trained to endure pain in silence. But, instead of breaking, she reclaims her body, her voice, and her power with a new found bloody grace.

Then there’s the MMC… a literal god of nightmares, dwelling within a mirror, stitched together from fear and darkness— yet utterly undone by her. He is terrifying, ancient, and devastatingly devoted. His heart only beats for her. Every shadow he commands bends toward her safety.

With pacing that is relentless and
tension sharp enough to cut glass. Every turn of a page feels like it’s moving toward something inevitable and dangerous.

Then… 💥 she hits us with an ending that can only be described as criminal. I genuinely sat there scrolling like an unhinged gremlin, convinced I could summon more chapters through sheer willpower. Needless to say, I am sprinting into Wicked Gilded Mirrors because I need to know what happens next in this haunting, broken but beautiful world.

Highly recommend this for readers who love:
• an FMC stepping into her power
• a dark, devoted MMC who would burn realms to ash for her
• paranormal romance that blends trauma, obsession, and triumph into something achingly beautiful.

“Not all that glitters is gold…”

Sweet Nightmares… Don’t let the title fool you because this book is anything but sweet. It’s romantic, tragic, and will have you crying by the end of it (or to be honest probably more than once while you’re reading it). And of course that means I absolutely loved it!

This book is technically considered a prequel, but it can be read either before or after Gilded Wicked Mirrors. The story focuses on Jane and the tough battles she faces during her relatively short life. She’s such a strong character, a true fighter, and no matter what she has been through, she always gets back up (until of course when she eventually does not).

I am still as obsessed with this world, the mirrors, and Hazel’s writing as I was when I first read Gilded Wicked Mirrors! This series will definitely go down as one of my all time favorites!

If you’re interested in a beautifully tragic dark romantasy filled with witches and vampires, magic mirrors, and bargains with consequences, then be sure to check this one out! Sweet Nightmares releases on September 17!

P.S. Please make sure to read the trigger warnings before reading!

Thank you so much to Hazel St. Lewis for an advanced copy! ♥️

I absolutely loved Sweet Nightmares! Really, I love the whole Mirrorverse Hazel St. Lewis has created. I find the world so fun and interesting. The lore surrounding the mirrors is one of my favorite parts of this series. I just find the whole idea of mirror gods bargaining with humans to be so intriguing.

Now, Sweet Nightmares is a prequel to Gilded Wicked Mirrors, so naturally I did know how Sweet Nightmares would end. Yet, when I actually reached the end, I still found myself gasping and my heart breaking. I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to that character, but I do have some hope for the future!

Nightmare was a truly delightful MMC to read. I adored him, despite how cantankerous he could be sometimes. I loved him even more when Jane discovered more about his past. We get to see what he’s gone through that made him into the mirror god we see today.

In short, read the Wicked Mirrors series! Include Wolfsbane Hall in your TBR too, as I hear the two series will connect 😉 These books are seriously great! It’s so easy to get sucked in to the world’s Hazel St. Lewis creates.

Thank you Hazel St. Lewis for the early review copy of Sweet Nightmares! All opinions are my own.

Sweet Nightmares left me wanting, and when I sat that, it’s in the best way ever. I just need the next book now because that cliffhanger was so brutal and so good. *please check trigger warnings

Nightmare and Jane’s story is deliciously tragic. Jane is forced to make a deal with Nightmare in order to save her life, and she will be forced to marry him and spend time with him in his mirror. Her life hasn’t been her own for a long time, and it keeps her away from her cruel husband. She ends up doing work in a very mob like way for these gods.

Nightmare is the morally grey we look for, and I can’t wait until he burns the world for her. These two win the award of being stubborn enough to give each other the silent treatment for years. At different times! I really enjoyed the relationship development and getting Nightmare’s background - especially peeks into his humanity.

Ahhhhhh. Okay where to begin?! So this is the prequel to Gilded Wicked Mirrors and is based around Jane and Nightmare. If you haven’t read GWM yet I highly recommend reading that first because this will give away spoilers for it. And plus it’s just amazing.

This book is dark. There are a lot of trigger warnings. But man is it amazing. And I love how Hazel did not give names to Jane’s abusers. I literally could not put this book down. I love Jane so much and she has been through so much. She deserves the world. And Nightmare 🥵🥵🥵 !!!! The slow burn is insane!!! And consent is a theme throughout which I love !!! I cannot wait for Cruel Ghosts!!! It’s going to be amazing! Hazel is one of my few autobuy authors. I will read anything she writes.

Soooo good! Sweet Nightmares was SO FREAKING GOOD. I loved it. Sweet Nightmares ends where Gilded Wicked Mirrors begins. GWM was my favorite read for July 2024, which made SN highly anticipated for me. Like I said, it was so freaking good! In SN we have different main characters, this time we have Jane and Nightmare. Sweet Nightmares indeed, I loved getting to know him drools. I also enjoyed getting to know Jane better. I loved being back in this world. Hazel St Lewis has once again done a fantastic job with the writing and keeping me captivated. I did not want to put this one down. I seriously can not wait for book three to release next year. I'm so ready for it!

I absolutely recommend adding Sweet Nightmares and Guilded Wicked Mirrors to your tbr!

Review may have slight spoiler!! Don’t read unless you want spoilers

I absolutely love this book! I really enjoyed the first book but seeing how this book has come together and knowing how it was going to end! Kind of wish we got a little bit more of nightmares point of view as well like at the end of the book. I absolutely cannot wait for the next book to come out!!!! Ahhhhhhhh after finishing this book I need mooooooreeee.

Also loved the chemistry and development with Jane and nightmare relationship and how things fit together with Quinnevere’s point of view in the first book.

A haunting, addictive read that blends paranormal intrigue and dark romance in just the right measures.

The author builds a vivid, chilling world, Calder Academy’s halls are full of secrets and shadows, and every twist feels like it pulls back the edges of something much more dangerous. The heroine’s journey is gut-wrenching, her fears real, and her courage inspiring.

The romance sizzles with tension, longing, and emotional honesty.

If you love spooky atmospheres, paranormal power struggles, and love that rises up through the darkness, Sweet Nightmares is one you won’t stop thinking about.

My my my now that was a trip. I understand Guilded Wicked Mirrors even better now. Bravo to Hazel St. Lewis i swear each book gets better and better. Sweet Nightmares deals with Jane and how her life unfolded and the deals she made. All to protect someone who doesnt know her. Not to mention her nightmare and there time together. This book made me feel so bad for Jane but I understand her more now. I cant wait to see what comes next if I could rate it 10 stars I would. Also the spice so made me blush. Please check out this amazing series.

I don't know what to say except I love Jane and Nightmare. He is unapologetically the villian but also a bit of a softy. Jane is one of the strongest women I have read about, life consistently deals her a bad hand and she just pushes through. No spoilers from me but if you have read Gilded Wicked Mirrors you know how it turns out for her. Loved some of the hints at crossovers to come. Thank you Hazel for my advanced copy.

This one pulled me in from the first chapter and I couldn’t put it down. I love the characters. My heart was breaking for Jane. She goes through so much abuse, but doesn’t let it break her. The relationship between Nightmare and Jane was filled with tension, and although he seems uncaring at times, he really did come to have feelings for her. The ending brought tears and now I have to read Gilded Wicked Mirrors. I can’t wait for the next in the series to come out. Highly recommend.

I loved this book as a prequel/segway. I feel like Book 3 is going to have some major events and I can’t wait! This one was very much focused on Jane and Gav’s relationship and how they both changed and supported each other, while also uncovering some secrets that filled in questions from GWM.

This book was exactly what I wanted it to be. Now to be fair, if you read Gilded Wicked Mirrors, You know exactly how this book ends to a degree. The spoilers have already been spoiled, but also... not quite. There was so much to this story that GWM only nods to, and seeing the pieces of the puzzle fall into place that GWM left open was so satisfying.

Jane's character development in this book just scratches an itch in the most satisfying way. She lost her parents at a young age and because of a stingy uncle, was forced to sacrifice any attachment to her only sister. Once she came of age, the orphanage married her off to a man twice her age who was abusive behind closed doors. Despite all of this, her love for dance was her escape, no matter how fleeting. After being forced to make a bargain with a Mirror, or sacrifice her own life, she makes a deal with the Nightmare, to be his wife and give up two weeks of her month to be with him. Jane is extremely resilient and has such a big heart. Despite all the conflicts that appeared in her way, she overcame them or crawled on her knees past them. She never gave up, continually trying to better herself.

This book does cover many years of her life, with gaps between that don't feel obvious. The author di a good job at spacing the time apart, while giving lots of action in the years that are on the page. The Nightmare isn't as bad as Jane's husband and I was counting down the pages until he was no more, and oh was it satisfying.

I can not believe how overarching the author has made her series. They are all in the same universe and finding those clues and hints was like a scavenger hunt.

I absolutely adored this book and can not wait to read what this author reads next!

💋I absolutely loved this book, a play on Hades and Megara, a duo I feel we don’t get much about. To be honest the only reference I have is from Disney’s Hercules, 🤭 but could you imaging those two together 😏 The world building, magic system and supernatural aspects are so well done you feel you are in that world with a sense of needing to go back.

🩰We meet Jane Whitefield, the Prima Ballerina that came from nothing in the dressing room reapplying her makeup because of her abusive husband. Never in her wildest dreams did she think she would marry a man THREE DECADES older than her. Reading about what Jane went through broke my heart, I had to clutch my invisible pearls. Not only does he abuse her, he lets his debtors use HIS OWN WIFE any way they see fit. And when one of her husband's enemies comes to collect his debts, her world is turned upside down when she is forced to make a bargain with the Mirror God Nightmare.

🪞Who doesn’t love a morally grey MMC? We all know I do 🙊 and Nightmare is taking the cake. He is literally the definition of only sweet to her, touch her and you will become unalived, will burn the whole world for her. Sure he is a terror, ancient cruel God who only wants what’s best for him, but ahh why do I love it?

This book absolutely wrecked me (in the best way possible)! 😍🔥
Jane’s story is dark, haunting, and utterly captivating. From the prima ballerina who loses everything to the twisted god who can’t stop obsessing over her—this villain romance had me hooked from the very first page. 👑💔

If you love a brooding, ancient villain, forbidden desire, and the delicious tension of “she’s supposed to destroy him, but love might destroy her first,” you need this book in your life. 💀💋

As someone who LOVED Gilded Wicked Mirrors, I loved this just as much. This book takes place slightly before/during GWM from Jane’s pov.
PLEASE check the TWs!

This book was dark and angsty, poor Jane goes through hell and back but gets stronger every single chapter. We learn so much more about the mirrors, Nightmare, and characters from GWM (no spoilers here!)
I ADORED Jane, and the push/pull relationship with her and Nightmare was done so well. And again, Jane was so resilient and continued to build her own armor even when being taken advantage of from every single person she knew. Nightmare was toxic but I still loved him, he may have started his bargain with Jane with an ulterior motive but he also ended up caring about her so much.
I legitimately couldn’t put this book down, Hazels writing is one of my absolute favorites.
This book is a prequel to GWM however you can read it after and it’ll be just as good.

This was one of my favorite books of 2025 so far, so please pick it up! And read Gilded Wicked Mirrors while you’re at! 🖤

Thank you so much Hazel St Lewis for the ARC 🖤

I loved Gilded Wicked Mirrors, so this sequel/prequel gives you even more insight into this world that Hazel has built. Now you get the true story of how Jane ended up tide up with the mirrors and just how deep it really goes. These story a mystical eerie with there viciousness of those in the mirrors but I promise wont be able to help but to be drawn in and falling for the dark souls.
