Ages ago, the world was a place of love and light, alive with the presence of El’s mighty wind. Now no one remembers such a world or how the smoke began. But with it came a loss of love and a loss of light. With the smoke came war.
It was a war unseen— a war between winds. Some believe it never began; others, that it never ended. Lightbearers, El called them and gave them a special charge to expose the shadowy dealings of those who walk in darkness.
Sixteen-year-old Lilian Truit has grown up in luxury and wants nothing to do with the strange light that stirs within her— afraid it may disrupt her life. But buried family secrets— and a scorned sister living in the rural pastures of Brord—have already set her on a path she cannot avoid.
As a new war impends, the role of Fisher demands Lilian gather the lightbearers. When confronted with her heritage, her calling, and the smoke that haunts her every step, how long will denial last her? And can the world afford to wait?
Onjel Bercier is a lover of faith-based and allegorical fiction, which shows through in her compelling style of writing. When she is not writing she enjoys making artwork, solving algorithms, and planning formal events!
A beautifully crafted world that provides an intimate look at what it looks like to come of age not only as a woman but also to embrace belief in a supernatural world. I don’t often read historical fiction, but the dynamic characters, threads of mystery, and the tangible struggles the characters face in this story drew me in and left me anticipating book 2! (And more of Jase + unraveling the plot points still to be connected)
