Since 2002, I’ve been a Personal Trainer and read a great deal of information on posture, back pain - not to mention the clients I have met with these issues. I’m also a Corrective Exercise Specialist, so this book was interesting for a number of reasons. Posture Perfect: The Archlifter Way to Spinal Fitness stands out because it explains complex spinal issues in a way that makes sense to real people. The combo of clear writing and great illustrations makes anatomy, disc degeneration, scoliosis and posture changes easy to grasp. This is important for readers who are not trained in medicine or fitness. Basically, it’s accessible information for anyone.
What I liked most was the “common sense” presentation. The diagrams showing normal vs. bulging vs. herniated disks is something I can show my clients to help them understand. The posutre-angle examples, and the different scoliosis patters are what I wish my clients could see before they end up in chronic pain and come to see me. The seconds on sleeping positions, daily lifestyle issues like ‘tech neck’ and a guide to help readers understand how to help was excellent. In my role, I can use what I see here to better communicate with the Doctors I work with.
The last part of the book goes deeper into Dr. Devin Savage’s Archlifter device and his Selbsthelfer (self-helper) approach. That said, even if you never touch the device, the education in here on spinal mechanics, disc hydration, sand safety/contraindications is valuable on its own. In short, this is a thoughtful, well-illustrated guide for anyone living with spinal discomfort—dentists, desk workers, and fitness clients alike—and a very useful resource for professionals who coach them.
