I read Runelight and Mistlight last year and had bugged the author about having to wait a whole year for this one. And yet, it took me more than a month after release to actually read it. I would say this one’s been on my TBR before it was released because damn, this whole series have been awesome!
Lastlight starts where Mistlight leaves off, with the box in the hands of Naevys, the former queen of the White Wood and the warden, Faron the new King of White Wood and Kate and Venn and their company once again helpless.
But Kate is not going to give up on the box, not when her brothers’ lives depend on it, but first they have to find Naevys and what she wants with the box. They have to discover why the queen is so obsessed with Renault, with the ravine, and why she’s going to such lengths.
The answers may cost them more than they can afford to pay, however.
As with the last two books, this one continues the adventure while deepening the mystery. I’m awed at the author’s imagination, and I loved the discourse on hope in the pages. Kate is perhaps the most flawed of the author’s protagonists, and there were times when I felt sharp with annoyance at some of Kate’s decisions. Times when I felt she was being purposely obtuse about things everyone else could see, but all the same, she remains an extremely relatable and real character.
Characterisation and worldbuilding are the top strengths of this book, and I’m a person who loves character driven stories and character development. Even the side characters come across as real people in this, and I loved how Faron has grown. I started to like him in this.
Kate and her found family of Venn, Silas, Tribal, Croftus, and Fix get into one scrape after another, each more dangerous than the last. And if in the process, Kate discovers things about herself that are less than palatable, that’s what growth is all about.
While I enjoyed the book a lot, the final chapters seemed a bit too stretched out, after the big climax. That’s not a criticism, just a personal preference for the story to end asap once the big bad is dealt with.
If you love epic fantasy adventures with a dose of mystery and found family, you will love this book.

This was a great wrap up to the Aenigma Lights trilogy, but I honestly thought this was JA Andrews’s weakest series. Since Runelight it felt like there was too much fluff and stuff added to merely add on book length that didn’t end up mattering that much in the end. Like most of Mistlight could have been cut out of the story and main ideas and concepts could have been told in a more concise way. I still love her engaging writing style and the characters were great, I just wished that this story was tighter because it felt quite bloated.

JA Andrews is a mystery for me! She writes these amazing books in the Keeperverse, The Aenigma Lights is the third trilogy she finished. I love these books from the bottom of my heart. With the first trilogy, she set the bar really high, and I was more than a little surprised when I found out that I liked her second trilogy even better. ‘Oops, I did it again’ is the soundtrack for The Aenimga Lights, because guess what? It’s now my new favorite Andrews-trilogy. Andrewsology? Janilogy? Anyway, her books just keep on getting better and better – and that seems impossible, because from her first book, they are amazing. With The Aenimga Lights I go as far as 'outstanding' - but what will come after?! Will goodreads have to add stars? Probably! Every time, I am hooked from the very first page, pulled into the story, that I really don’t want to stop reading. Everything feels so real: The characters, the places. That’s immersive for you.

The story picks up where we left at the dramatic end of Runelight. (So if you thought about reading this book as a standalone – it simply isn’t, you would do yourself a favour by reading the other two first) There are still so many mysteries, so many puzzles to solve, so many questions that needs answers… and main character Kate seems to be running out of time. Can she save her brothers? The community of Home? The White Wood?

JA Andrews truly is a master storyteller. Her writing is flawless and seemingly effortless, her prose amazing. She navigates us readers through this wonderfully complex world, through all the mysteries that have piled up in the last two books and she takes some very unexpected twists and turns. Whenever I thought I finally knew what was happening, that hope was shattered or at least fractured. Her writing especially has lots of heart and soul. And this is shown best in her characters that I deeply feel for and connected to during everything that happened. And not just the main characters, no, but pretty much all the side-characters as well, including the ones that could be described as villains. But it’s not that easy. There are so many layers to each character and they are so complex that it’s even difficult for me to pick a favorite, I pretty much loved or at least enjoyed all of them.

Lastlight, like all the books in this series, is more than pure entertainment. It is a journey we take alongside the characters. We laugh, cry, suffer, feel with them. The Aenimga Lights are a pure joy to read and revisit again and again. To me, JA Andrews’ books belong to the very best that fantasy has to offer.

The only niggle I have here is that mere three books clearly is not enough time to spend with all these wonderful characters and now I am still sad that I finished The Aenimga Lights – and I usually don’t have a problem with book-hangovers.

Well, Andrews has done it once again! I officially have a book hangover. What can I say without giving anything away? Hmm…

As always, her climactic final book in the trilogy is big, complex (in a good way), with a high cost for victory, with love and loss, fun puzzles, high stakes, found family, and lots of heart.

I was genuinely worried I’d end up throwing the book across the room several times—which is a great sign that I’m fully invested. Despite some heavy hits, I’m satisfied with the conclusion. (I am very sad about one thing, but I’ll get over it someday… 😭)

I thoroughly enjoyed the journey with Kate, Venn, the Weasel brothers, the elf niblings, Crofftus, Fix, Faron, Merrick, and more! (Bo is my favorite, btw.)

The puzzle pieces fit together just as they should, weaving together a great plot. The emotions are spot on. The writing is delightful, atmospheric, and soulful. The characters are memorable, the magic and worldbuilding are excellent. Highly recommended!

Content: Fantasy violence/death, no spice, no strong language.

So many emotions I cannot explain. Happy with how it ended, but sad its over. The way she tells her stories are just amazing. I will be anxiously waiting and hoping a new story will be coming next year or sometime after. If you have not read this series, you are missing out!

good read, a little dragged out

The story was a little disjointed. Things like elves being born from a seed, but elves marrying humans, and having children

When I pick up a JA Andrews book, I'm always blown away at the richness of her world. It's so unique, in so many aspects, it overtakes me senses, completely! I'm enthralled, I'm engrossed, I'm out of "circulation" until I come to the end. The weird thing is, although the book have a high page number, it seems, to me, that I've read it in a blink of an eye. Now THAT'S a superb storytelling ability! Which this author has in bucket loads...her crafting, her skills, her entire world is fascinating, compelling, riveting reading. And her characters? Oh heck you have NO IDEA how magnificent they are! Full, opulent, faliable, flawed, just perfection! The way the conversation flows, so naturally, effortless and engaging, peppered with insightful truths that apply even in our own modern world, an example, "Much of the pain in the world is caused by someone who is in pain themselves"

Gosh, this book picked up immediately after the dramatic ending of the previous book and things are slightly different, although no less dire. Kate, freed from the shackles imposed on her by Thallion, is desperate to find the box that houses her brothers, to free them before it's too late, but Naevys has made off with it, and she's elusive at the best of times, disappearing at will, for all extents and purposes no longer in her right mind. But when Faron appears, with the box, an earthshaking revelation nearly undoes Kate. The guilt, oh my word, her guilt of THAT revelation gutted me just as much as it did Kate, a piercing pain in my abdomen as though I'd been run through with a sword! With Bo and Evan still missing, Naerys apparently not of sound mind, although...after what she went through at the hands of her husband it's no wonder! But IS she crazy? Is she trying to stop a bigger threat? Well... Ms Andrews kept me guessing, she expertly spun this tale, and I, loved watching the tapestry come to life brimming, teaming with colour! I was taken on a glorious meandering path, together with Kate and Venn, trying to decipher the WHY of Naerys' deeds, except, true JA Andrews style, what I supposed and what transpired were totally different things...

Oh glory are Tribal and Silas a breath of fresh air! Their entire attitude screams loyalty for Kate and Venn, but hells are they fierce. And fiercely funny too. Ms Andrews KNOWS Dwalves, her Dwalves are so unique, I swear she must lived with them at some stage.... Characters like Crofftus, Fix, Faron, Naerys, Thallion; the twins Aislin and Matlen, so impulsive, impetuous, sassy, with heart's of pure gold risked everything, causing my heart to constrict in pain for them; even Merrick who's a loudmouth and unlikeable at first, rich and all different, all with their own voice, are just some we encounter throughout this series. They are far from simple, they have layer upon layer, complex and unpredictable, well, Ms Andrews keeps them unpredictable, I'm not sure what they'll do next. So many times I've been caught off guard, some I think don't have an iota of redemption within them, surprise the heck out of me. Take Merrick as just one example, he was vocal in his loathing of elves, he was dogmatic in his attitude towards Kate and then did an about face. This superb manipulation of ALL the characters shows every angle of them and even some angles I didn't know could exist. What I do know is that Ms Andrews completely took me over, she obviously has vitalle that's been secretly infused into the pages of this book, I was unable to relinquish my hold until the very end....

The depth of emotions is staggering, from betrayals, to perception, to falsehoods, to dread, to major misconceptions, to guilt and manipulation, to motivations, they all kept me on the edge of my seat, they all made my tummy heave, but, again, through all this writhing, Ms Andrews keeps the spark of hope, of love alive. Sometimes an ember, sometimes a roaring flame but alive, vibrant, vivid. These words by Crofftus seal it all into a gorgeous package "love does not desert. If it missteps it does not run. It returns, admits its error and makes amends". My heavens did my heart pound! The plan Naerys concocted, the means she went to fulfil her desire, I could sort of understand the why but the entire entwined plot, which reeked of desperation, threw me for a loop! Venn!!! Omg! And WHAT Kate discovers, that was even more OMG! The action was omg awesome, the storytelling was omg brilliant! The author had my intestines in a knot with THE confrontation, I didn't think I would survive the building up and building up of tension, I honestly felt as though I would explode! And my stars, I was NOT expecting what happened to happen! But it did and OMG what a cool surprise at the end! "A magnificent story" pales to describe the intricacies of this tale. This is one you need to EXPERIENCE, it's not "just a read", it's a true magical escapde of note, with the most beautiful found family one can ask for. THIS book wraps everything up in a unique HEA.

The Aenigma box created by Renault in order to save his ailing child's life is still taunting Kate the Keeper, and her trusty team of friends, who are hell bent on freeing her two brothers Bo and Evan, who unwittingly got locked within the box's drawers. Time goes slowly within the box, however for Kate time goes much faster and she is becoming desperate. Every time she thinks she is close to unravelling the box's mysteries she gets thrown into a different direction with more problems which jeopardise all their lives. She is travelling with Venn the elf, who has a life debt with Bo, one of Kate's trapped brothers, Silas and Tribal the dwarf siblings, Crofftus who dwells in bodies of animals, Fix the gnoblin, and the twin elf siblings Aislin and Matlen who are related to Andovenn. Their biggest problems are coming from another who is also seeking the Aenigma box, and Renault's amulet in order to save her child's life too. The Queen and warden of the white woods of the elves, Naevys is powerful and has the whole of the woods supporting and obeying her commands, so the battle for the box is not even at all. Our friends face many dangers as do also the humans living in the village of Home, and the woods themselves as the warden turns ever crazier in her desperation. Both need to save those they love, however they do so at the risk of everyone else's life. In this amazing ending to the trilogy which has been full of puzzles, adventures, and life risking situations, we discover many a secret from both sides of the story, as well as seeing the loyalty and courage displayed by the whole group. I especially love the character of Fix, who might be the littlest, but for me the mightiest, as he proves himself time and time again. I also enjoyed seeing a glimplse once again of Flibbet the peddlar who I love! This has been an amazing series, full of twists and turns, which kept me riveted till the end. Well done Ms. Andrews for yet another riveting Keeper series.

Wow, just wow! Ms. Andrews does it again. When I was first introduced to this author, the first two trilogies were already completed and I did not have to wait to read the next installment. Now b that I am current on everything, I had to patiently wait a year for each book in this series, all of which I plowed through with ease, even with the high page counts. The time flies by and I generally take a while to finish a book, but never with her books. Each book was worth the one year wait. As with all her books, the world building is impeccable, the characters are endearing and flawed, but wonderful, and real despite the fantastical world in which they reside. The saga of Kate and Venn’s search for Bo, trying to open the box, etc. continues to unravel and takes so many new twists and turns, revealing more and more enigmas to unravel. The stakes were high and I was enthralled, if not furious several times. I absolutely love this series! She has such an amazing talent for creating the most perfect found families. I love all of our gang here and each of their unique personalities. Plus, Fix, Fix, Fix! I just loved him. Oh, and the dwarves with the nibblings was so sweet. It’s too difficult to highlight all the components I loved, because there were so many. There are enough reviews providing a plot outline, so I just wanted to chime in and express my love for this author and this trilogy. (I did go back and read the last two parts of Mistlight, which I am glad I did because of all of the complex plot development at the end. It was very helpful w/out doing a full reread.)

Saving the best till last!!!! 5 star final installment of the Aenigma Lights Trilogy.

Kate, Venn, Silas & Tribal and all the wonderful side characters that make up this world are back and helping to solve the mystery of the aenigma box! The story is brilliant with the incredibly detailed mystery, twists, turns and surprises but the sharpest of writing skill is shown in the character work we are treated to. You will fall in love with them all...and even the "evil" characters have a rich and terrible back story so you almost understand why they do the evil they do.
Do I have favourites? I'm glad you asked because of course I do! Venn will always have my heart. She's been through so much, put others first despite her own needs and been betrayed by so many that say they love her. I just love her story. I also love my weasel brothers Tribal and Silas! Janice's dwarves are always the best. My newest fav is Merrick. I would love a side story about his past! (hint hint)

The ending....we can't end the review without mentioning the ending. I cried for fully 40ish pages as things were happening. However, the sorrow was so beautifully written, I can't be mad at how things turned out at that spot in the story. I loved the very end so much though....thank you for wrapping things up the way you have.

Lastlight is the must anticipated book in The Aenigma Lights trilogy, following on from Runelight and Mistlight. It can only be described as a tale of epic proportions full of mystery, adventure, danger and the strength and bonds of love and friendship.
The journey that you are taken on through an incredibly descriptive world is filled with plot twists that you definitely don’t see coming, keeping you intrigued the whole way through.
Kate and Venn are faced with danger and heartbreak at every turn as they struggle to unravel the mysteries surrounding the Aenigma box as they race against time. Every time they think they are on the right path fate has other plans, diverting them from their goals. With help along the way from the odd assortment of friends that they collected along the way, they must all pull together and utilise their individual talents to overcome their adversaries.
The strength of their bonds of friendship are constantly challenged, but it is what inevitably helps them prevail.
Reading anything from JA Andres is a totally immersive experience that takes you on a roller coaster of emotions, at times wanting to laugh, cry, smile, or hold your breath in anticipation.
Definitely a journey you you want to be a part of and not one to be missed.

“I cannot stop hoping. But it is not a bright, sparkling, unassailable thing. It is sharp and painful like a knife wound. Like fire burning me away. It is a form of torture, and yet I cling to it.’”

Lastlight was one of my most anticipated reads of the year and it did not disappoint! Such a great ending to a terrific series!

I’m glad I reread Mistlight before starting this book - there are lot of details and a fairly intricate plot so a review definitely helped.

I love Andrews writing and this book was just as beautifully written as the others. The setting is rich and immersive and the characters feel entirely real - even the secondary and bit characters are fully realized. I especially liked Merrick, new to this book, and I love Fix, the gnoblin from previous books. Tribal and Silas, the dwarf brothers continue to be totally wonderful.

Kate and Venn are still trying to find a way to free Kate’s brothers, but they also need to fight the evil that’s consuming the elven woods.

Really, a wonderful read!

Absolutely brilliant read. This is the last in The Aenigma Lights trilogy. I would highly recommend reading them in order so you have the full back story but ,if not, it’s still a fantastic read. The Aenigma box was created by a half elf mage, Renault in order to preserve and save his ailing daughter and somehow Kates young brother is trapped inside. For 20 years their brother Bo has searched for the box until one day an injured elf appears where Kate is living with The Keepers, sent by Bo, and clutching the very same box. Unfortunately Bo has also disappeared and there then follows an incredible adventure by Kate and the elf Venn, to rescue and save both brothers. It’s an amazing story full of twists and turns and false trails, sadness and joy, a real rollercoaster of emotions that winds up the trilogy to its ultimate conclusion.

I'll start with I have enjoyed every single story I've read set in the world so far. The characters are lovely. There is so much creativity in the types of magic and how it can be used or experienced. This trilogy, specifically, was full of surprises when it came to the plot line.

All that said, by the time I reached book 3, things were starting to feel a little repetitive. I think things just went on for too long and my brain started to glaze over whenever magic needed to be used. There was just too much going on and I lost track of which was what type and how they were meant to work.

I still loved the characters and enjoyed the unexpected twists (perhaps a few too many). I think it just needed some decent editing to make it excellent.

This book is absolutely phenomenal. It is a perfect combination of the mystery set up by the previous two books and it deals with the recurring themes with the trilogy with extreme finesse and a quality that is almost unmatched. The characters and the bond they share are extremely compelling (especially the dwarves, who are just really fun!), and it has some of the most heartwarming and devastating moments of any book I have read. The mysteries established earlier in the trilogy are truly amazing, and it is a brilliant continuation of the magic system.

This is one of the best books I've read of all time. Do read the whole trilogy.

Wow! What an ending.
My jaw actually dropped when it was mentioned who an ancestor was.
I have loved all of the Keeper stories and love the fact that it's all within one world. It makes the stories feel deeper without needing loads of descriptions.

The first third of each book, I've found, have dragged a bit but I know that it'll be worth all the hours of reading by the time the conclusion has built. Each ending is powerful in its own right - although the end of the second book was an awful cliffhanger!!!
I love an ending that closes out storylines and I felt this did just that.

I can't wait for more from this world.

A tearful ending

So many mysteries. So many false assumptions. Dead ends. Rabbit trails.

The first half of this book could not hold my interest. Maybe because it had been so long since I read the first two and the urgency I felt at the end of book two had disappeared.

But soon after the 50% mark, I could not put it down. I had to know how on earth they would defeat their formidable enemies and rescue the brothers from the box.

Although the end leaves room for more adventures in Kate’s world, it satisfies the reader with a clear answer to the original story question. A drawn out conclusion but worth the read.

This was the absolute perfect conclusion to this series. JA Andrews always manages to make me root 100% for her found family crew, and this was no exception. There were a lot of threads to wrap up in this series, too, with all the mysteries presented in books 1 and 2, and she did a fantastic job bringing everything to a satisfying ending--one that is both sweet and heartbreaking all at once.

I can't recommend this series and this book enough. It's like a hug in book form, just like all her books, and I will definitely be rereading it in the future.

Brilliant

Loved this story. Not everything turns out as we want authors to write them, but if every part of the story had a happy ever after, then it would probably be too boring and predictable! And this book was far from predictable! However, the good endings were good, and the bad endings were sad. it definitely kept me on my toes. Keepers, Elves, Dwarves, Dragons, and Gnoblins, what more could you want except More...

Great read!

This trilogy has been just as all consuming as the other trilogies from JA Andrews. I fell in love with this author's very imaginative world when I happened upon the Keeper's Chronicles. A very big thank you to JA Andrews for sharing her talent with the rest of us. Being able to lose yourself in a world created by someone with this much imagination is a true joy for readers like me. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

What a wonderful read! As this book was the end of a trilogy, it answered a lot of questions and did so in a very satisfying way. There was action, adventure, love, loss, and self-discovery among other things. This was a very satisfying conclusion to the Aenigma Lights trilogy and I highly recommend you read it.

Sad for this series to end

This was such a great way for this trilogy to end. I have been waiting 6 months for this final installment to come out and was not disappointed.
I hate a spoiler, so I won’t… but, there are so many unexpected twists and turns in this last book, I was gripped to the pages.
I am going to miss these characters.

A good ending to the trilogy, first half of the story was slow too much descriptive but second half was a flier. i felt the book from my perspective was a tad predictable but enjoyed the journey with characters like kate and venn. If you are an aenigma lights fan a fitting and happy ending to the series.

Excellent wrap-up

I really enjoyed this wrap-up to the trilogy. As always, the book is fluent fantasy.

If the author writes yet more trilogies besides the existing 3 (or single books), I'll promise to buy them too :)
