A fairy prince’s chosen champion. A human who can’t even do his own laundry.
One minute I was on my couch, halfway through a six-hour gaming binge. The next? I woke up in a glittering throne room with a crown-wearing pretty boy announcing that I was his “summoned warrior, foretold by prophecy.”
Which is hilarious, because the only thing I’m good at fighting is lag.
Prince Irian looks like he stepped straight out of a fantasy RPG—sharp cheekbones, silken hair, armor that probably costs more than my car. He’s deadly serious about this whole “savior of the realm” thing. Meanwhile, I’m standing there in sweatpants with chip crumbs on my shirt.
Naturally, he insists I can’t leave until the “quest” is complete. Naturally, we have to travel together. Naturally, there’s only one bed in every inn.
And while Irian keeps calling me useless, he also keeps sneaking glances when I strip down to wash, asking oddly curious questions about human “bonding rituals,” and getting way too close when he thinks I won’t notice.
I was supposed to save his world. Instead, I think he’s planning to ruin mine—one heated look at a time.
Callie is a romance author who believes every love story deserves a happy ending — and a little heat along the way. Known for her lighthearted, swoony, and steamy novels, she delights in creating characters who make readers laugh, blush, and believe in love. When she’s not writing, Callie can be found hunting for the perfect vintage teacup, baking wildly over-decorated cupcakes, and choreographing impromptu kitchen dance parties to 80s pop hits. She lives with an ever-growing collection of romance paperbacks, a mischievous cat named Biscuit, and a firm conviction that love — like sprinkles — makes everything better.
This was a unique approach to the theme of human becomes the royal consort to a fairy prince. I liked it, but it was shallow. We didn't get to know the characters well, and it seemed ridiculous that Jake kept winning their battles through sheer luck and determination while the highly trained warrior prince Irian always ended injured on the ground in mortal danger. I was amused by how much the story felt like a video game, but I wasn't all that invested in the HEA because I felt like I barely knew the MCs although Jake felt slightly more real because we're in his POV the whole time.
I liked that Callie took a different route with this installment of Wings and Whispers. It was refreshing and different. The love connection seems a bit surface level, but with a little more depth would be really great. I’d like to know what actually changes their perspectives. I feel like the human, Jake, is a stronger character than the fairy prince in this one. Still a fun afternoon read.
