Humans are not just unwelcome in Brigantium.

They are a threat to be extinguished.

Desperate, and with her children in tow, she seeks refuge with the only person she hopes she can trust – her estranged university friend Trystan, now the ruler of a rival kingdom.

As war brews on the horizon and her husband’s spies circle, Evelin must harness her magic to conceal her son’s true nature. But as she grows closer to Trystan, a forbidden romance threatens to unravel everything she’s fought to protect.

huge thanks to netgalley and the publishers for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

man, i will say i hate reading a really good arc with a cliffhanger.

this story started off VERY strong and had me hooked. then it started to slack... idk somewhere along the middle things got a little out of array? I was confused because apparently every character completely just lacked basic communication skills all around and I just wasn't sure what was going on at all? i did enjoy it and enjoyed the ending and will read the next but i truly don't know how to explain it??

plus the romance? idk it felt very flat to me. i felt more love from the FMC for her sons then i even thought she felt towards the MMC. the MMC also was such a playboy etc and then suddenly just stopped?? idk i didn't approve of some of his actions haha

3.5🌟!
I literally finished this book in a day, so you can imagine how addictive it was.

Evelin and Trystan were friends when they were in academia together but later when life happened, they lost touch. There was always a quiet attraction between them but they never acknowledged or acted upon it.
So when years later Evelin’s life took a darker turn the first person she turned for help was her old friend who’s now a king.
This book had all the delicious tropes like;
-Forbidden romance.
-Friends to lovers.
-Heroine in peril.
-Sinister characters, prophecies and more.

Special mention to the writing style, I loved it! It was fast paced with suspense (especially in the beginning) that made my heart beat uncontrollably. I enjoyed the plot too.

I didn’t give it more stars because this wasn’t safe for me. That one scene made me loose my interest in the romance aspect of the book.
Also Trystan lacked so many qualities that a King should have. I found him impatient and his actions immature.
But I did like him and he was a loyal and amazing friend. So many of my questions went unanswered so i think there’s sequel to this book.

Recommended.

I received an advance review copy and I’m leaving this review voluntarily.

I love a good forbidden romance and I enjoyed the bond between Evelin and Trystan. Evelin is on the run from her deranged husband, and trying to protect her children. I enjoyed the political aspects, the mystery of her newborns condition, and the slow burn romance brewing. There are layers to the plot, and I liked that this was different from the usual romantasies, with a FMC mother to 2 children and her second chance romance.
Excited to see more from this series.

3 tropes of ‘Bonds of Blood & Duty’ - Forbidden love, Found family, Duty vs desire. What’s not to love?!

I have been following Jen on socials for almost a year, it’s been a pleasure seeing her journey with writing this book and I’m so excited to be on her official street team. When I tell you I can’t wait to get my hands on this ARC I am not kidding.

As a mother myself in my early 30s I know I’m going to find this FMC unbelievably relatable. Thanks Jen for giving us a place in the romantasy space.

I arc read this book directly from Jen A. Egerton. I’ve been following her TT account since she was writing this book and I’m so amazed how good this book is. Knowing where her inspiration came from just made me tear up reading some parts of this book. The slow burn is definitely slow as a snail but the tension, holy moly.
The story is about fae kingdoms and the political plots throughout with prophecies and humans. The first couple of chapters is going to grip you so well that you can’t even drop the book. We start off with Evelin, a fae princess of Brigantium who is birthing with difficulties. She calls forth her midwife for assistance after 6 hours of contractions and she feels something’s wrong. Then second chapter we go back two years where there is a lavish ball in the Parissi kingdom within King Silas palace, celebrating fae and human alike. Out of a sudden an attack occurs resulting in a major massacre of everyone present in that ball room, as the killers make a run for it. Then we go back to the present where Evelin has finally birthed her son, to find out he’s human. Which is unheard of being a fae-borne baby human. She’s “imprisoned” in the Royal hunting lodge, ordered by her husband and brother (now king of Brigantium). This part has so much political plots, twists and intrigue that its going make you mad and gasp to turn the next page.
Her husband can’t stand humans, he has rage against them, so Evelin decides to run away with her two children and midwife so that no one knows that she birthed a human baby. She’s also afraid that her husband would take matters in his own hands.
She crosses the border to Parissi and heads towards Valon, where her dear friend Trystan is now king and please for sanctuary in the city. Of course, Trystan accepts immediately because he still has hidden feelings for her since they both studied together at the Academie (fae school of magic).
And here is when the tension starts tensioning. It’s going to make you giddy, mad, thrilled and pissed off. These two are remarkable characters but I have to say, it’s the first time I’ve read anything of the sorts. About a mother. And the hugs amount of power and will that goes into saving her children throughout this book.
Trystan vows to protect her but risks going to war with Brigantium and saving his people from Evelin’s husbands attack. Her husband is now unhinged and wants revenge. Wants his children back and kill his wife (she was a useful pawn to his story).
This book had me enraged, intrigued with the political aspects (love this the most), giddy with certain quotes and feelings some characters had between each other and I need to mention, I have a thing for secondary characters and omg, Nik. What a badass, broody, wonderful, beautiful commander. That’s all I’m saying. read the book, it’s so worth your time.

And thank you Jen for this wonderful book you put out there in the world, for pouring your heart, tears and soul into it. I felt it deeply. And I wish you and your children a lot of love. ❤️

3.5 Stars SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

I really appreciate that the author has tried to do something different. Bonds of Blood and Duty, follows the story of Evelin on a journey to save herself and her children.

I liked the writing style but the story line was a little lacking for me. I found myself wanting just a little more from the plot, and felt like some aspects could have been delved into more and expanded upon, I didn't feel that invested in the FMC and MMC's love plotline, some of the stuff that Trystan did just made him seem like a bit of a bad guy in my eyes and underserving of Evelin regardless of him making a Blood Oath swearing to protect her.

I do think the book has set up another very well. I would love to see what happens with William and Gabriel once they have grown up.

If you are new to the Fantasy genre, I do think this would be a very good introduction for you, if you are looking for something that isn't a Epic or High Fantasy, with a easy to follow along story that has something new to it then I would recommend this book to you.

I’m sad that this one just didn’t really hit the mark for me, the premise that the main character was a mother was a big deal for me as we really don’t see it that often in fantasy reads!

The pacing is fast which isn’t a problem but made some of the detail more surface level and made it difficult the relate and sympathise with the characters at times. And as a mother sometimes the decisions our FMC made was slightly questionable as her main view throughout was everything she did was for her children and to keep them safe.

I think this storyline could have been fleshed out more to maybe a duology or even a trilogy instead of steaming ahead to get it all concluded in one!

Enough of the negative some of the positives is that this magic system and world is something I’ve not read before which was fun! And I did love the little snippets we had of the academie the FMC and MMC attended previously to the events we follow. And I just loved the little snippets of the boys, and Agnes 🥰

Thank you @cranthorpemillner for this arc, I’m sorry that this time wasn’t a win for me 😞 but hopefully future reads will be! ♥️

Thank you to net galley for the arc I really did enjoy this fantasy romance it was so easy to read and understand. It has been the best I have read in a while it was a bit predictable especially towards the end of the book. With the end revelation given I’m not sure if there will be a second book but if there is sign me up for reading it.

I feel like I’ve been following Jen on socials and chatting to her forever, I’ve watched and supported her writing for a while, and I was so grateful to Cranthorpe Millner for letting me get my hands on an early review copy of this book! So let’s dive in!

‘Bonds of Blood and Duty’ is not an epic fantasy, it is instead a sweet yet strong story of family, friendship and the line between love and rage when it comes to being a parent. This book falls firmly in the realm of cosy fantasy romance, while it’s set in a fae-world, the plot focuses on a handful of characters and their relationships, and prioritizes the romantic and familial storylines. It’s an easy, charming read with a beautiful commentary on women making hard choices and finding their strength for their family.

I personally felt the world-building was just right, it painted each scene well without becoming overwhelming. The pacing was strong for the most part, in some places I do feel certain ‘things’ were resolved too quickly, but the book moved along well overall and was difficult to put down.

As far as our characters go, Evelin was exactly as I expected, her children are her priority, she makes the necessary hard decisions to ensure their safety and you see her struggle to find the balance between being a parent and also having a life and happiness of her own.

Trystan, our MMC, I utterly hated. He’s the playboy King, he’s clueless and he hasn’t grown into his priorities yet, he makes several choices throughout this story that make you want to slap the stupid out of him. His romantic storyline with Evelin bothered me, he isn’t ready to take on the responsibilities demanded of him by being heir to the throne, yet alone take on a woman with two kids and her abusive ex-husband. I don’t think he is a bad person, I don’t think he’s a villain, I think he simply isn’t right for her, at least not right now. BUT this was book one in the series, and I don’t think this romance is built to last, I think Trystan offered Evelin a place to call home when she had nowhere else to go, and I feel like he gave her the opportunity to take things for herself, to remember what freedom and happiness are outside the marriage she was trapped in. In essence, I think he was the perfect rebound, and he could make a wonderful friend and ally for her. But I think a certain side character might have more to show down the line, because a ‘who did this to you’ moment from someone other than the MMC absolutely had me screaming.

I’m hoping we move into the next book and get to see the boys growing up and Evelin taking command of her own future entirely. I want her to have the happy ending she deserves, and I don’t think Trystan is that ending for her, this story definitely has more to give. If you are looking for an easy, light fantasy read, with strong values and complicated relationships, this is the perfect book to pick up.

-Fae royalty

-Friends to lovers

-Soft yet strong FMC

I really wanted to love this book and in many ways I did. It has such a strong start, and Evelin’s fierce protectiveness over her children absolutely shines. Her love and determination are the emotional heartbeat of the story, and I admired how far she’d go to keep them safe. The writing itself was very enjoyable and encompassed elegant dialogue (very Regency imo). ✨
The world has real potential and I appreciated the unique blend of maternal strength and fae intrigue. 🧚‍♀️

That said, I struggled with a few elements that kept me from fully connecting. The pacing dips after a strong opening and the back and forth between past and present took me out of the story too often, which meant I found it a little hard to stay engaged. The world building felt a little underdeveloped, enough to follow, but not quite enough to lose myself in.

And then there’s Trystan. 😬 Something he does around 38% in was a personal ick for me, and it really affected my ability to enjoy the romance. 💔
While they weren’t together at the time, the casual way he does what he does right after nearly kissing Evelin completely killed the emotional investment for me. It’s hard to believe someone is that torn up over a woman when they can immediately go and do that. It was worse for me that Evelin witnessed the aftermath. 👀

Later, when they’ve begun their relationship, Evelin finds him in bed with multiple people and presumes he’s had an orgy. This is resolved very quickly as he did not, and she forgives him again later for something far worse, altogether too easily, especially after her experiences in her marriage regarding her husband and brother. 😣
I understand his pain and the Blood Oath circumstances, but the forgiveness just felt too swift for what she endured as a mother.

I do think this series has promise, and I’d be curious to see where it goes next, especially if future instalments focus more on emotional consistency and deeper world building. But for me, the romance and certain character choices made it hard to stay invested. 💚

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for letting me read an ARC in exchange for a review!

The premise of this book intrigued me, with a fae woman fleeing from her husband in the middle of the night to find sanctuary with someone she used to know and care for. Overall, I enjoyed the book, but the pacing seemed kind of off to me. It moved pretty slowly for the first part, and then really picked up and had a ton of information just given to us at the end. It seemed like we wanted to speed to an ending a little bit.

The pacing kind of confused me because of how quickly some of what I thought would be major plot points were kind of glossed over or resolved really quick. Such as some fights between the FMC and the MMC; I thought they would be good points for their relationship to grow, but she kind of forgave him really quickly each time. I just feel like there were some moments where we needed to slow down and just let the characters be in the moment, instead of blinking and have it be over.

The star-crossed relationship also fell kind of flat for me, despite having an intriguing premise. I feel like we didn’t get enough insight into their past, with only a couple of flashbacks that didn’t really give us much depth into their relationship before. I feel like if we had more background, that would add layers for their relationship to build off of. Otherwise, it ended up feeling pretty rushed and lacking much substance in my opinion.

I tend to be nit-picky on wanting character-driven stories, and this one just missed the mark for me. Maybe I’d feel differently if we had gotten to see more of the characters reactions and actions during their journeys instead of mostly their internal thoughts.

Trystan also wasn’t very likeable to me. I started out as a fan, but as time went on, he started making questionable comments and decisions, and Evelin let him off for all of it too easily. I think it was harder for me to connect with the characters and their relationship since I could never really tell where Trystan stood, and what his personality truly was. I don’t really understand some of his actions toward the end, in terms of his character arc, but I know it was all to set up what seems to be the next book.

Fae Baby Mama Drama 💅
* Awkward In-Laws (Fae Edition) 😬
* Running Away From Your Problems (But With More Magic) ✨
"Bonds of Blood and Duty" is the kind of book that makes you realize your own life drama is pretty tame. Oh, your in-laws are a little too nosy? Try having a husband who’s a ruthless fae lord and a king for a brother, all while trying to hide the fact that your child is… a human! It's basically a fantasy novel meets a high-stakes episode of "House Hunters," but instead of a fixer-upper, the main character is trying to find a kingdom that won't extinguish her son. The struggle is real. 🏡
Evelin, our heroine, is the queen of juggling too many things at once. She's got forbidden love with an estranged university friend (relatable), a secret baby (less relatable), and a husband who's probably sending out fae spies to hunt her down (definitely not relatable). The tension is so thick, you could cut it with a magical sword. Or, you know, a butter knife. The writing is filled with such genuine yearning that you'll be rooting for Evelin to find happiness, even if it means causing an inter-kingdom war. Which, let's be honest, is a pretty good reason for a war. ⚔️
So, if you're looking for a romantasy that proves second chances are possible, even with a fae lord and a very un-fae child in tow, then this is the book for you. It's a gripping tale of love, sacrifice, and the ultimate parental conundrum: "How do I protect my child from certain death while also pursuing a hot, forbidden romance?" A must-read for anyone who thinks their family has too much baggage. They probably don't. 🤣

REVIEW- 3.8 stars
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
🧝🏻‍♂️👩🏼‍❤️‍👨🏼🧝🏻‍♀️
I liked the unique storyline, it was something I've never read before. A distraught mother risking it all to save her kids from their wicked father. I liked the world-building too. It was nice and I would like to read more of it.
🧝🏻‍♀️👩🏼‍❤️‍👨🏼🧝🏻‍♂️
It was really, really brave of her and admirable. The FMC, Evelin suffered through an abusive marriage, but was determined not to let her kids live through the same. It was nice to see her grow into the confident woman she was meant to be. Her strength came from her motherhood. The MMC, I don't really like him much. However, it was really brave of him to accept Evelin and her kids despite the danger. But, apart from that, nothing endeared him to me. He just wasn't responsible enough as a king and I didn't like what he later did.
🧝🏻‍♂️👩🏼‍❤️‍👨🏼🧝🏻‍♀️
When I read the prologue, I thought I was in for some sort of mystery. There were hints, but I was disappointed. It wasn't a major part of the storyline, but I felt it should have been. I was also disappointed with how the romance between Evelin and Trystan ended. It left a lot of questions. I wanted more
🧝🏻‍♀️👩🏼‍❤️‍👨🏼🧝🏻‍♂️
This book was okay, it was really easy to read and I read it in less than a day. I felt it needed some things, but it was still a great read and I'm definitely looking forward to the next book in the series. I want answers!

Full of tension from the off, this romantasy is brimming with all the best tropes.

Evelin’s life is thrown into turmoil when her baby arrives far too soon – and doesn’t possess the pointy ears typical of all fae. Aware that her husband will demand answers, yet unable to provide any, Evelin conceals the news of the birth and flees Brigantium, seeking refuge from her old friend Trystan. But she soon begins to harbour feelings for him… and it doesn’t take her ruthless fae lord husband long to find out! Desperate to protect her sons and uncover the secrets behind her newborn’s human form, Evelin confides in those whom she fully trusts. Yet it appears her trust may have been too freely given. With war on the horizon and betrayal around every corner, will Evelin’s fierce protectiveness of her children win out?

This story is beautifully written and full of tension and urgency from the off. I started reading late last night and stayed up until the early hours to finish it, as I simply couldn’t put it down. I love how the author manages to add twist upon twist and manipulate the reader into seeing characters in a certain light before throwing in a curve ball or two, to drastically alter our perception of these characters as the story progresses. The pace and tension really ramp up towards an explosive ending, and although things were left on a cliffhanger in readiness for the sequel, I felt the ending was definitely conclusive enough in itself.

A damsel in distress, forbidden love, second chances, friends to lovers, hidden truth… what more could you ask for? This was an absolute joy to read, and I’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for the sequel!

This is a world where the fae worship a single god that feels very … Christian coded. This is neither bad nor good, depending on your taste in books, but to me it stood out in a way that didn’t quite work. Especially for the fae.

The characters are all rather simplistic in their characterization which makes the romance between Trystan and Evelin feel somewhat forced. Evelin is week and in need of protection and Trystan is in love. They never really develop much beyond that point, character wise. While Evelin does have some agency and does take some actions, her personality never really grows beyond needing someone to hide behind, and Trystan … he’s a love interest, not a character. He’s bland, devoted, bland, devoted, and extremely predictable. Marcellus starts as a caricature of villain and ends the same way, with no development.

While I liked the idea of a slightly older character, a mother with two children to protect as a character, Evelin spends more time with Trystan than her children, and she never feels older. Most of her moments with the kids are limited to cute moments before they’re shuffled off so she and Trystan can make eyes at one another, and overall I just wasn’t caught by the characters. The plot is fine, the pace is quick and the writing is solid.

It’s just … I was bored by the characters, confused by all of the godliness, and in the end — while the magic system is solid — it wasn’t enough. While I don’t personally recommend it, I’m sure there are many people out there who will. And if you give it a try, I hope you enjoy it.

Thank you so much to Net Galley and the publisher for the ARC.

Thanks to NetGalley and Cranthorpe Millner, I had the chance to read an advance copy of Bonds of Blood and Duty.

The heart of a mother; the trials of a woman; the aches of a wife.

Evelin's story will lie embedded into my mind for quite a while. Her journey offers the reader a glimpse into the universe of motherhood as she struggles to ensure her children's safety in a world prepared to devour them.

My favorite thing about the book was the writing style: with beautiful and natural descriptions, eloquent dialogs, and intriguing characters, the author brought to life the Fae world of Brigantium. The book briefly went over some of the magic systems, but it was not too packed, which made the pace soft yet clear, thus the storyline felt remarkably authentic. The progressive disclosure of the fantastical elements and the world's system reinforced the realistic flow.

I loved how the author depicted the moral turmoil of both Evelin and Trystan, giving the readers an ample fountain of transparency into their emotions and struggles. I was initially impressed by the original plot, where the FMC is focused on the safety and well-being of her children rather than her own happiness and desires. The romance was sweet, but it felt somehow forced and incomplete (I dare say even incompatible) at times. I believe the main focus of the book was not on building a strong love story but rather on adding depth to the struggles of a woman who is forced to balance many different fronts at once.

My rating:
⭐⭐⭐⭐½(4.5/5) - thoughtful, moving, and beautifully written

Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers and the author for this ARC.

Overall I had a good time with this read. It did start off quite slowly for me, and the jumps in time periods did not help. At the beginning I felt as though we were not spending enough time in either the past or the present to become invested straight away, which is something I usually look for in a fantasy novel.

I also wished the world building and politics had been more developed. We were given just enough information to follow what was happening, but not enough to truly root for either side.

Certain parts of the story moved on too quickly to leave a lasting impact. Often important events were relayed through conversations rather than shown to us, which made the story feel as though it was being moved forward a little too conveniently. Anything negative that occurred seemed to be resolved within a few pages, leaving little space for tension or emotional connection. I think if some plot points had been given more depth, we as readers would have been able to build a stronger attachment to the characters and their struggles.

That said, I did enjoy the book and I would be interested to see where the story goes next. I simply wish it had been given more room to breathe and had not felt so rushed in places.

2.5⭐

I have two main thoughts about this book: 1) I liked Evelin, our female main character and 2) I couldn't stand Trystan, the love interest.

Evelin is a princess, stuck in an abusive marriage at the urging of her brother, the king. However, when her newborn child is born human, Evelin knows that her husband will kill him, and likely her too. So, to keep her children safe, she takes them and escapes to the neighbouring kingdom, run by Trystan, a friend from their days at the Academie. I liked that Evelin was very independent, and it felt like she had a real motivation for her actions, with wanting to protect her two sons at all cost.

Trystan, however, sucked. Evelin deserved so much better. He was selfish, immature, impulsive, and for all of the times he told Evelin that he loved her, he sure didn't show it. Given that this is a romantasy, and the romance really didn't hit, it's a real shame. Honestly, there were two moments where it looked like there was going to be a love triangle with Trystan's commander, and I was wishing that Evelin would come to her senses and go after him instead - he still kinda sucked, but at least he wasn't so manipulative.

It's less that 300 pages, and it's a really easy read, but not my favourite.

Thank you to Jen A. Egerton, Cranthorpe Millner and NetGalley for this eARC!

I really enjoyed this book overall! The premise immediately pulled me in - a fae woman trying to escape her past and find safety again had me curious from the start. Evelin was a pretty compelling main character, and I found myself rooting for her even when I didn’t always agree with her choices.

The pacing felt a bit uneven at times - some sections moved slowly while others seemed to rush by - but I was invested enough in the story that it didn’t bother me too much. I just wish we’d gotten a little more time to breathe during some of the big moments. The romance and relationships had a lot of potential, and I think a few extra scenes could’ve helped some of those emotional beats hit even harder.

Something I would have loved more of was the world itself. The setting is clearly rich with history and politics, but the political tensions weren’t always super clear to me. A bit more exploration of that side of things would’ve made the stakes feel even higher.

That said, I really enjoyed reading this one and will definitely be checking out the next book. It’s got a lot of heart, an interesting cast, and enough intrigue to keep me turning pages.

Bonds of Blood & Duty is a deeply emotional tale centred on a mother, a princess ensnared in a marriage born of deception. At its heart, the story explores the fierce lengths a parent will go to protect their child, while delicately unraveling the lingering question of what if between the protagonist and a long-lost friend. Their rekindled connection adds a layer of romantic tension that feels both tender and bittersweet.

This is a short read, drenched in emotion, friendship, and protective instinct. The action is well-paced and keeps the momentum alive, while the characters’ motivations and inner thoughts are clearly articulated, making it easy to get swept up in their world. Fans of A Curse So Dark and Lonely will likely appreciate the similar blend of royal tension, emotional depth, and personal sacrifice.

That said, I found myself wishing the fantasy elements were more fully developed. They felt more like a whisper than a vivid world. A deeper dive into the characters’ school memories would have helped solidify their emotional bond and made their connection feel more organic, rather than slightly rushed.

Thank you for the earc.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. One of my favourite aspects of reading is fully immersing myself in the story, often by stepping into the shoes of the main character. Evelyn, our female protagonist, is a mother of two boys, just like me. I appreciate seeing that in a book.

The story is set in a fae world where Evelyn, the princess and sister of the king, is married to the fae commander of the army. In this world, being human is perilous and potentially fatal due to the widespread hatred of some faes towards the human race. When Evelyn’s son is born fully human, she fears the violent reaction her husband will have, and decides to leave her loveless marriage and seek refuge in the neighbouring realm where her old friend Trystan now reigns as king. Naturally, this creates significant political challenges for Trystan, but their friendship rekindles and deepens.

The book is brimming with twists and betrayals, both double and otherwise. I thoroughly enjoyed it and love that it concludes as a standalone novel while leaving some intriguing questions for a sequel.

Thank you Cranthorpe Millner for having me on this book tour and providing an ARC

𓇢𓆸Review rate: ★★★☆☆

Thank you Jen A. Egerton, Cranthorpe Millner Publishers and Netgalley for this arc and opportunity to review!

From the description alone, it’s clear this story sets itself apart from more “classic” fae romances. We follow Evelin, who is trapped in a terrible marriage and driven toward escape by the desperate situation involving her children. I have to say — her brother (HOW could he do that to his own sister?!) and her husband were infuriating. It’s been a long time since I’ve disliked characters so strongly within the first 50 pages.
Thankfully, Evelin and her children find safety in the kingdom ruled by her friend Trystan (bless him for not abandoning her). That said, I personally struggled to feel the romantic chemistry between the two. Some of Trystan’s behavior gave me a bit of side-eye, and there were moments when I questioned whether someone acting that immaturely could truly be a monarch.

On the positive side, the author’s writing style is genuinely pleasant and makes the story easy to read. The pacing is smooth, and the prose flows effortlessly.

⭐️ overall: 5/5
🌶️ spice: 2/5
🌎 world building: 4/5

It's safe to say I've never read a fantasy book like this.

The plot in itself is very different and had me hooked from the get go. A royal FMC with 2 children who goes on the run? Whew, you just know you're in for a wild ride.
Evelin was a great character, although, at times I didn't agree with her reactions, the huge situation towards the end had me crying for her.

I loved the incorporation of plot twists. They weren't always these HUGE crazy revelations and fit in well with the story.

The pace of the book was everything for me. It wasn't too long or drawn out. If anything, I think more battles would've felt...nice? However, it's clear that wasn't the premise of the story, especially given Otto's consistent reminder to Latiana and Marcellus.

Evelin and Trystan's relationship is interesting. I'll be honest, I'm not his biggest fan, and I'd be shocked if many readers are. For me, Nikolas quickly took centre stage (iykyk) and I'd LOVE to read more about him.

Overall, this is a 5 star read for me and I highly recommend if you want a shorter fantasy read that's going to leave you wanting more.

Bonds of Blood and Duty is a story with an interesting premise and moments that truly shone. Evelin’s struggle between duty, maternal love, and forbidden attraction offered emotional weight, and the setting of political tension and magic added texture. The reveal about her child’s nature and her need to protect her family gave the plot urgency that pulled me forward more than once.

However, I found that the pacing was uneven. Some scenes lingered too long without driving the story ahead, and a few character decisions felt predictable. The romance arc, while emotionally satisfying in parts, lacked a bit of spark in the buildup. The world and magic system could have been fleshed out more to strengthen immersion.

Overall, it’s a solid read with real potential, and I enjoyed it more than I expected, though it fell short of becoming a favorite.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC and to Jen A. Egerton and the publisher for letting me read this book in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you NetGalley, Cranthorpe Millner Publishers, and the author for the ARC! This was a pleasant story of a fae mother escaping her kingdom with her 2 young children after the youngest was inexplicably born human. We see her travel to the kingdom ruled by a crush from her time at an academy. We see the FMC reconnect with friends and a professor and grow from brow beaten to brave. The synopsis of the story sounds great, but fell flat to me. The story has an underlying mystery/prophecy that was not fleshed out well. We also don’t know the motivations for a key supporting character. Maybe this will be solved in a second book? The romance led more YA than adult
& I just never became fully invested in them.

Thank you to NetGalley, publishers and the Author for this Arc.

This book has a really good setup, the world building and political tension definitely pulled me in.

Saying that I did struggle with the book at times. Both main characters felt a bit stiff, which made it hard to connect or get properly invested in the romance, it reads quite YA and not quite as intense or emotionally layered as I was hoping for.

There were some darker themes sprinkled in, and I kept waiting for the story to go there but it held back. I really wish those moments had been explored more deeply because they could’ve added so much weight.

If you like lighter fantasy romance with just a hint of darkness, this one might land better for you.

ARC Review - forced marriage, Fae, fierce love and fighting feelings.

This book follows an FMC who is fleeing with her children from a toxic and misleading relationship into the arms of an old friend.

The plot is well planned although I felt a little fast and some scenes/plot points could have been fleshed out a little, but that being said it would be a good book for anyone starting out reading fantasy/Romantasy as it's not overly complex but still has the key ingredients of a good story.

There are some great points of balancing feelings and duty with the potential of further relationship development with some of the side characters in book 2.

There is magic, fated prophecies, years of friendship with strains, layered personalities and a headstrong FMC.

Read this book in a few days I had to know what happened. It was a book I didn't want to put down.

There's friends to lovers, forbidden romance. FMC in peril and found family.

The main characters are good and I love the friends to lovers storyline. I do find the MMC a little immature at times but I feel like he's trying to grow throughout the book which I think adds to his character. One of their friends kept surprising me and still has be guessing their true intentions.

There's many questions still unanswered so hoping there's a another book.

I got this as an arc read and I'm so grateful.

I have been following Jen for quite awhile now on social media and was lucky enough to be part of her street team for this amazing book.
This I would say is your typical cozy fantasy book the world building was great without being too overwhelming like some epic fantasies can be.
This was such a quick read for me. I’m one of those books that you don’t have to keep going back over because you’re ensure what has happened.
As a debut novel, I thought Jen did really well with the storyline in this book and I can’t wait to see what book 2 brings.

Bonds of Blood and Duty is a solid fantasy tale that mixes political intrigue, family loyalty, and a touch of romance into an accessible and entertaining story. The worldbuilding is vivid, and the central conflict carries enough weight to keep the pages turning, though some character arcs feel predictable and certain emotional beats don’t land as strongly as they could. Still, the novel offers enough excitement and atmosphere to satisfy most fans of the genre, placing it comfortably at three stars.
