The life force of a world is dying.

In Fyevna, life is bound to the Zayeth — a living force woven into every soul. But when a poison takes root and the Zayeth falters, the very foundations of Fyevna begin to crack.

To save their world, three companions must journey beyond all they have known — into the breaking of everything they believe.

Some forces cannot be stopped. Some worlds can only be broken.

Alex wrote a book! A friend since high school and my roommate in college, Alex and I have loved talking about reading and writing for well over a decade. A huge congratulations to him for the massive amount of energy and commitment necessary to write and self-publish his own work.

The book itself is in the same vein as Islington’s “The Shadow of What Was Lost” or Jordan’s “The Wheel of Time,” in that it’s a sprawling epic fantasy set within a rich world overlaid by complex magic system(s). If your book of choice contains deep lore and grand set-pieces, I’d encourage you to give Alex’s book a try (also you’d be supporting an ambitious indie author on the ground floor, how cool is that).

I went flying through this book! I’m not the biggest fantasy fanatic, but I read it for my husband. Maybe I’m a little biased, but I do think it was a good read. Full of personality and world building, I think anyone would enjoy this book.

Apart from The Lord of the Rings, I am not a fan of fantasy books. But this book, WOW! Alex's passion for writing is clearly displayed in this book. The world he created, the characters, the story - it was all so captivating. I look forward to reading any and all of his future books!

Fire is green. The sky is purple. The humanlike characters have grey skin. In J. Alex Giguere's BREAKING, we are most definitely not in Kansas anymore, Toto.

We're also not in Middle Earth, or in Narnia, or in Midkemia, or Azeroth...

Mr. Giguere has pulled off something difficult to do: a unique world with a unique magic/supernatural system. In a word this book feels fresh all the way through.

I want to say this book is an adult novel that young people will follow easily and love -- or it's a YA novel that adults will follow easily and love. It's clean language-wise and there's no sex. It doesn't need either, and loses nothing by avoiding them.

An impressive debut. It's been a while since I've read something this fresh.
