An angel guards the parish, but who will guard them from the angel?

In papal society, where the Church rules all, Bishop Sergio holds immense power; from shaping laws to settling disputes, from granting lands to collecting tithes, he is a man of both influence and faith. Sergio’s greatest power, however, is beyond man’s he alone has a connection to Diomari, an angel appointed by God to guard the parish and deliver judgement upon the wicked.

But the angel is not the serene figure of scripture and art. Diomari is prideful, temperamental, and disturbingly human in his desires. When he becomes enamored with Palmina, a young woman orphaned by tragedy, his lust for her festers into jealousy and rage.

The parish reels when Palmina’s wedding, meant to unite bickering factions, is shattered by bloodshed…and only Sergio recognizes that the gruesome murder bears the angel’s hidden hand.

Diomari has fallen from grace into obsession. Sergio is torn between obedience and conscience; to accuse an angel is heresy, but to do nothing is damnation.

Diafthorá by Jon Minton is a dark, elegant plunge into the dangers of unquestioned faith and the monstrous potential of the divine. Set in a rigid papal society where the Church’s authority is absolute, the story follows Bishop Sergio—a man accustomed to wielding power, yet utterly unprepared for the corruption festering within the very angel he reveres.

Minton crafts a world where holiness and horror intertwine. Diomari, the parish’s guardian angel, is no gentle celestial; he is volatile, possessive, and frighteningly human in his desires. When his obsession with the orphaned Palmina curdles into violence, the resulting tragedy sends shockwaves through the community. Only Sergio sees the truth, and his internal struggle—between loyalty to doctrine and the moral imperative to confront a fallen divine being—gives the story its emotional weight.

Richly written and morally unsettling, Diafthorá explores the peril of blind devotion and the terrifying consequences when the sacred becomes corrupt. It’s a sharp, haunting tale that lingers long after the final page.
