Every fight has stakes, and the hardest jabs are the ones you don’t see coming.

Laila Moretti was on the verge of making her UFC dream a reality. A standout in the regional circuit, she was one win away from a contract—until a crushing defeat shattered her confidence. Convinced she’s not cut out for the big leagues, she walks away from the cage, her coach, and the future she fought for.

Harlow Hayes doesn’t believe in limits—only opportunities. Running an underground fight promotion takes nerve, ambition, and a willingness to play dirty. She’s built an empire on giving fighters a shot the system never would. But the audience craves blood, and with her reputation on the line, she needs a star who can do more than survive—she needs someone who can win.

When Laila steps into Harlow’s world, she sees the fighter Laila refuses to believe she is. Their attraction is undeniable, their ambitions impossible to ignore, and as the lines between business and something far more dangerous begin to blur, Harlow faces a push Laila to reclaim the dream she abandoned or admit she’s already lost sight of her own.

4.5⭐️ I enjoyed this sequel to The Clinch. It isn't necessary to read it first but it helps set the scene for the martial arts/MMA theme of both books. The Clinch is Eden Bauer's story and in the new book - Tapout, she's the mentor and coach of Laila Moretti. Laila is an accomplished fighter who enters her first big fight broadcast on TV. She losses terribly and blames herself for freezing up and forgetting her training. She quits working and training with Eden when she meets a woman, Harlow, who is promoting illegal street fighting.

The story is told from Laila's viewpoint. I don't feel like I ever got to know her well and what I did learn about her I didn't care much for. She's a hothead and very impulsive. Harlow was much more likable for me and I felt I knew and understood her much better.

Disney did a great job with the fighting scenes without making them too hard to follow. She obviously knows her sport. this book was a good blend of sports action, storyline and romance.

Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I read the The Clinch a few years back and absolutely LOVED it so I knew I needed to read Tapout.

Having Eden as one of the MCs, especially after reading the Clinch was such a nice add on.

I wish I had a bit more detail on what Laila looked like because I only have a vague idea. Harlow was described much more, but using imagination was easy enough.

Laila has a lot of walls and is always defensive about everything such as criticism and recommendations. I struggled for a bit with her character because for a 26 year old, she acted about 10 years younger most of the time.

I will say this one wasn’t quite as good as The Clinch, but I loved the growth Laila had and Harlow was just so badass the whole time. Their dynamic was perfect and it was built perfectly as well. This book totally could have been longer and I would’ve been here for it.

The story really just shows if you work hard enough and believe in yourself, you can achieve the things you want.

Once again, Disney took me into the sports fighting world effortlessly. I was hooked from page one. I found myself reading fight scenes like my life depended on it, when in my mind I just pictured a blur of limbs and blood. The clinch was all about Eden's rigor and honor. Disney took us into the underground world where things are ruthless, and rules are more flexible. The chemistry between Harlow and Laila was truly palpable, and I absolutely loved Harlow's character. It's surprising, but I had a bit of trouble getting a read on Laila. Disney portrayed well how she was not mentally ready for UFC, but it's like I couldn't see her drive, and I had the feeling she just went where the wind was sending her, and she was sometimes frustrating.
Overall I really enjoyed this intense book.

Tapout is the sequel to The Clinch (one of my all-time favorites). Another powerful book by Nicole Disney, set once again in the world of MMA fighting. While the first book tells Eden's story, this time we accompany Laila on her journey to fulfill her dream of becoming a UFC fighter. However, after brutally losing the most important fight of her career, she doubts her abilities, questions her dream, and runs away from her coach and the Emerald Tiger Dojang.

Then Harlow comes into play. She is a former fighter who organizes illegal underground fights where a lot of money is at stake. But she also gives young athletes a chance to fight. Maybe that's just what Laila needs.

We experience firsthand the ups and downs of Laila, who has to find her way and her destiny again after this devastating defeat. I like Laila very much, but she is not always easy to understand. She is hot-headed and impulsive, especially when it comes to others, but also timid and insecure when it comes to herself. But I really enjoyed watching Laila's development. And Harlow had a lot to do with that. She is a wonderful woman with her own problems, flaws, and insecurities, but she always takes care of her people and is also a tough businesswoman.

Laila and Harlow have a great dynamic, and the attraction between them is palpable. I loved how they supported each other, but also challenged each other, even if that wasn't always understood right away. And sometimes you have to take a risk to achieve a goal or fulfill your dream.

What impressed me most was how the author manages to capture the mood, the fighting atmosphere, and the scenes in such a way that the reader feels as if they are right there. You can almost feel the punches, smell the sweat, and feel the excitement.

Nicole Disney has once again written a powerful sports/romance novel with strong but also vulnerable characters. I was very happy that Eden was also part of this book, but I missed Brooklyn a little bit.

In my opinion, not as powerful as The Clinch, but a very enjoyable and captivating story.

"An inspiring, powerful, and beautifully written love story that packs a serious punch!"

What a book — absolutely outstanding! Incredibly written, flawlessly executed, and completely captivating from start to finish. I don’t have a single bad word to say about it; it was entertaining, emotional, and inspiring throughout.

Let’s start with Laila, our fierce MMA fighter FMC. She was phenomenal. Her personal growth and self-development in this story were truly inspiring — going from such a low point in her career to finding her strength again was beautifully portrayed. Her journey was raw, emotional, and deeply empowering.

The love story between Laila and Harlow was just as incredible. From their very first meeting, the connection between them was undeniable. Their shared passion for MMA and for each other was off the charts, and their chemistry was breathtaking. It’s one of those romances that feels so real and so well crafted that you can’t help but root for them every step of the way.

I also adored Vic — Laila’s friend who’s always in her corner, both literally and figuratively. Their friendship was strong, honest, and full of heart. And Harlow’s family? Absolutely adorable! I especially loved her bond with her sister’s children; the affection and warmth in those moments were so beautifully written.

Thank you to @bookpublicityservices for the opportunity to read this incredible book, and thank you, Nicole, for writing such an amazing and heartfelt story. I can’t wait to see what you give us next!

When MMA fighter Laila Moretti loses the opportunity of a lifetime, she’s forced to rethink not only her career but also her self-worth. This story is about Laila's journey of self-discovery, leaving behind the rules of Emerald Tiger and finding herself in a world of secret fights at The Yard, and an instant connection with the intriguing Harlow Hayes.

The writing is smooth, the characters grow, and the side characters serve a purpose, adding additional depth. The adrenaline-filled fight scenes had me ringside, hyped up in the moment.
Would I recommend this book? Hell yes!

2.5 ⭐

Tapout is a sports romance about Laila, who’s chasing a UFC contract, and Harlow, the boss of underground fights. The big question is—will their morals push them apart, or will they realize there’s a lot more between them than just punches and kicks?

I picked this up because I’d read The Clinch by the same author. Even though I didn’t click with that one, I figured I’d give Tapout a shot. Sadly, it still didn’t quite hit the mark for me—which is a bummer, because I actually love MMA and have practiced it myself.

Laila, for me, was tricky to connect with. A lot of the time she came off more like a teenager than an adult, and it made it hard to get on her side. I did like that she goes on a bit of a self-discovery journey and figures out what kind of fighter she wants to be, but overall her character just didn’t grab me.

Harlow, though? Totally different story. She felt much more grounded, and I loved the way she showed Laila that there’s more than one way to fight—literally and figuratively. Honestly, I wish we’d gotten more of her POV, because she was way more compelling to me. Plus, seeing her take risks and step out of her comfort zone to do the right thing was a highlight.

The romance, though, is where things really fell apart for me. It had that insta-love vibe right from the start, so the jump from “I’m into you” to “I’m in love with you” didn’t feel natural. And the third-act breakup? Pretty disappointing. They don’t even try to fight for each other—they just go their separate ways for months and then suddenly decide to date again. It felt too neat and easy.

What I did enjoy was the fight scenes. The author clearly knows her stuff when it comes to MMA, and those moments pulled me right in. So, while the romance didn’t land for me, I still appreciated how real the fighting side of the story felt, along with the risks and sacrifices that come with being in the ring.

I have to admit, Nicole Disney writing about fighting sport romances is a great niche, and she should definitely stick to it. If you enjoyed the Rocky movies and wished there was more sapphic romance included, you will definitely enjoy this because we have all the classics: the underdog protagonist, the hot love interest who believes in them, the best friend who's cocky but will definitely fuel the revenge arc, all the good stuff.

Feel good, lots of great action scenes, and very convincing MMA technical descriptions during fights. A good time!

The world of fighting sports—like boxing or wrestling—isn't usually my first choice for a topic. However, I've read other books by this author about the subject and found them pretty entertaining. So, I decided to give this one a shot, and it was okay.

The story blends two sides of the fighting world: the more legal and the more sordid, on-the-edge-of-legal side. It shows the dirty dealings and personal interests that are often prioritized over the integrity of the fighters, even when the fighters are aware of it and accept it.

The protagonist isn't sure which path to take—the legal or illegal one. However, her relationship with the woman who organizes underground fights makes her decide to give that a shot, especially since her attempt at a legitimate channel didn't go so well.

I can't tell if the story is realistic or not, but it seems believable to me. The way the personal stories are woven together with the training and fight scenes was entertaining. And there's no gratuitous violence or sordidness.

I was a little disappointed with this book. The story itself—the search for self and Laila's journey in sports—is really good, but the romance wasn't for me.

I don't know if it's because it's because of the 1 pov, instant attraction or something else but I didn't feel the slow burn or the chemistry between the two MCs,maybe just a touch of forbidden love but again not much. (All things I expected given how the book is advertised).

Romance aside, I really enjoyed the sports scenes—both training and fighting. They're very well done, and even if you're like me, you know nothing about them, you'll be able to stay on top of things and not get bored.

That said, if the tropes I'm about to list intrigue you, I recommend you give them a try.
- strangers to lovers
- slow burn
- opposites attract
- forbidden love
- attraction at first sight
- contemporary sport romance
- Age gap ( 5 years)
- set in NY
with some banter

Overall it's 3.5⭐ and 3🔥

TW: Violence - blood - money struggle - mention of a parent in jail - difficult family situation

would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book

if you are into MMA or boxing then this is the book for you.... its gritty bloody but man what a storyline oh and just the right amount of spice you would want

Laila Moretti has a dream but at the moment she is getting the shite kicked out of her and is about to tap out of her bout, this is supposed to be her dream fight but she is overpowered at every turn that it was suppose to her being signed up to the UFC after this bout isnt about to happen and that its being televised makes her nightmare more of a reality

harrow hayes runs illegal underground fights, and she is good at it... she also pays her fighters well that she also tries to keep her fighters safe is well known

so when harrow and laila meet up at an illegal fight one of them knows about the other...

but is it a scene that laila wants to join in.... shes sworn off fighting but once there she gets hooked and that familiar feeling of wanting to fight comes back... but it will mean doing something that she hasnt done before and knowing its illegal comes with its own dangers....

wow this book was gritty in its extreme but i was hooked and wanted to see how everything would pan out.... man that last fight had it all....it was like i was there seeing it blow for blow...

cant wait to see what else this author comes out with

I was sent a copy of this book in return for my honest review. Below are my own words and thoughts.

That was a solid read. I enjoyed it a hell of a lot more than I thought I would, purely because I know zero about fighting or UFC but the book never once made me feel out of my depth. I was right there in the action constantly! Edge of my seat. I could see this being a movie! It was very well written and I thoroughly enjoyed the plot, characters and the romance. Definitely recommend giving this a read, even if sports romance isn’t something you usually read or like me know nothing about.

This was the first book I’ve read by Nicole Disney and I definitely want to read more. I know there’s a book that technically falls before this one called The Clinch, so going to check that one out. This book is a standalone though and can be read without reading the first book.

Tapout was one of my most exciting books this year. I hadn’t read one yet about UFC fighters and this blew my mind. So intense, so hot, and the connection between the two main characters was SO GOOD. I loved the grittiness of Harlow’s world and how she built something more long-term sustainable. Their POV’s really drew me in.

General Thoughts
I really enjoy watching MMA, so I was looking forward to reading a romance with MMA at the forefront of the story. I haven’t read anything by Nicole Disney previously, but it is pretty apparent that the main characters from her previous novel, The Clinch, are side characters in this one. I suspect fans of that book will enjoy seeing them.

Plot & Romance
Honestly, I think I enjoyed the overarching plot of this book more than the romance. There were a bunch of fight scenes that I thought were enjoyable to read, and I wanted to find out how everything turned out (for Harlow in particular). I do wish some parts of the fights had been written a bit differently. They are absolutely written in a way that someone who knows nothing about MMA could understand, but the way the names of various moves were mentioned took me out of the book a bit. The romance was definitely insta-attraction which I don’t mind (and tend to enjoy), but I had a difficult time fully understanding any emotional connection earlier on in the book. The whole book was written from Laila’s perspective; however, I thought Harlow was the more compelling character. I would have really liked to see her perspective as well, as it might have helped me feel more invested in the romance. The spice overall was good.

Final Thoughts
I thought this book was good, and it was able to keep my interest. I think I just was hoping for a bit more. A dual POV might have worked better. The fight scenes stood out the most, so I’d recommend this book if you’re into that.

Before I read The Clinch, I had no clue about MMA and what it is all about. Thanks to the author's amazing writing skills she made it possible for me to love this combat sport and of course Eden and Brooklyn. When I heard about a sequel, Tapout, I was just waiting for the moment I could also devour that book even if I wondered if it just was a copy paste of The Clinch. It is not a The Clinch part two, but instead something very different, and equally good.

In this book the MC Laila has lost all her will to fight after ten years of training with her best friend and coach Eden. It was Laila’s time to shine, to become a champion like Eden but she decides to tap out from the match and everything to do with Eden’s gym. Instead, she starts working in her uncle’s chicken restaurant, it is plain torture, but she cannot face Eden after her failure.

Thanks to her friend Vic she does however meet Harlow that runs an underground fight club and gets a chance to work for her as a facilitator of the fights. Harlow and Eden don’t see eye to eye, Eden thinks Harlow just is a blood merchant with her fight club. There is however so much more to Harlow and the reason behind the illegal fight club she is running. Harlow is so wonderful and caring in so many ways and when they get to know each other a special bond is formed. Harlow is the reason Laila slowly starts loving the sport again, she wants to fight again, feeling she perhaps has it in her after all.

They start falling for each other and that roof top encounter is something very special I will think about for a very long time. After that you just want Laila and Harlow to find their HEA, Laila to get a chance to defeat that bitch Katarina, get back on track with her fighting career and of course make up with Eden. But it is all very complicated and so much to resolve, so many things go wrong in their lives and their communication. It is such a fascinating ride to follow, and I highly recommend this book to everyone.

When I learned that there was a sequel and that it was Laila's story, I was super excited! The Clinch is a favorite, so I couldn't wait for more!

No disappointment here! It was so good! Laila is feeling lost because of a discouraging loss from her first big fight. She finds herself in the world of underground fighting. Being drawn to the ringleader of said underground world. It was all very exciting. Harlow and Laila are 🔥❤️‍🔥. Totally enjoyed it!

(I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.)

Tapout is a lesbian romance novel focused on the world of MMA. When scrappy working-class contender Laila Moretti chokes in the ring and blows her chance at getting into the UFC, she initially plans to give up fighting forever, resigning herself to frying chicken at her uncle's fast-food restaurant. But although she can't bring herself to go back to her old gym, Laila can't quite stay away from the world of martial arts either, ending up drawn to an underground fighting ring run by Harlow Hayes. Harlow, meanwhile, dreams of going legit, but is single-handedly financially supporting her family and worried about starting over from scratch. The two women are drawn to each other, but their respective insecurities jeopardize their budding relationship.

I had not read the previous book in this series, but that was fine; the main character of that book was present, but it didn't spend too much time dwelling on her in ways that were clearly supposed to mean something to me and didn't, as other series sometimes do. The romance was convincing and sexy, but the big surprise for me here was the fight scenes. I know nothing about MMA, but the author manages to vividly convey both the physical action and the emotional stakes of every fight in a way that carries through even if you don't know a lot of the terminology. The women's relationships with their families, and in Laila's case also her friends and community, are also well fleshed out. A fun read!

I want to start out by stating The Clinch, is one of my, if not, my favorite sports WLW novels.

This spinoff - it was boring, and the characters were all one dimensional

The audiobook was BRUTAL.....and to be honest, I thought it was AI....maybe it was? AWFUL. Avoid at all costs.

WARNING: Personality implant ahead!

When you read a sequel, you expect the characters to be more or less the same people as they were before. Not so in Tapout. The first-person protagonist, Laila, is a night-and-day opposite. It’s like she got switched out for another person altogether, in which case why make it a sequel at all?

In The Clinch, Laila was the sweet, kind, supportive, responsible and reliable sidekick to Eden. Now, she’s a total brat: Rude, impulsive, irresponsible, unreliable, insensitive. Even her attempts at flirtation are different – raunchy and gross: “I keep getting distracted by your ass,” she tells her love interest Harlow shortly after meeting her, when they are barely acquaintances. It’s hard to see what Harlow – who is warm, kind, responsible and of course gorgeous – would even see in her. The author doesn't seem to be in the same place as four years ago; maybe that's too long of a time gap for books in a series to remain cohesive?

I don’t want to make the book sound awful. It isn’t. My expectations were probably just too high. It’s overall well written, with a few good moments in an otherwise fairly lackluster and predictable plot. The theme of MMA fighting remains original for Sapphic romance, and this offering is at least as good as the average for the genre. It just didn’t have the realness and soul of The Clinch, which I loved.

Intense, passionate drama filled, sports romance

Laila’s crushing defeat has somewhat tampered her dreams to be a star UFC fighter, when her friend takes her to a form of underground fight. There she meets Harlow, who appears to have some sort of issue with Laila’s former trainer and friend, Eden. But Harlow offers Laila a chance to earn some serious money, and she starts to wonder if a different dream is possible, all while falling for Harlow.

Every single second of this was amazing! I couldn’t put this story down for wanting to know if Laila was going to find a place being a star doing what she was so passionate about. I was also dying to know if she and Harlow could find a way to be together without upsetting their other friendships and compromising any professionalism. Then I was left wondering what had happened between Eden and Harlow to create this somewhat rivalry that Laila had got herself caught in the middle of. It was all so dangerous and exciting but also made sure to highlight the dangers of the forms of underground fights that thrive because of the restrictions on it in a professional sense of the sport. It was such an interesting dynamic to explore and added just the right amount of conflict between Laila and others in her world.

Harlow was brilliant, she was hiding for the most part but Laila managed to get in and under her skin to really get to know her. That other side of her helped to build empathy with her situation and understanding of how hard she had been working, but it also added extra complications to the story when Laila became a catalyst for events that impacted the enterprise she was currently running. There was quite a bit about the fighting but it was balanced so well with moments that helped us to really get to know these characters from time with families, to deeper conversations about the past or with friends, about how they really felt.

The characters were edgy, creating a rawness with the reality of people striving for their dreams and following the path, even if it deviated a little on the way. I loved this so much and recommend it to anyone who loves a great story!

Tapout by Nicole Disney

🩷 Underground fighting
🩷 Slow burn
🩷 Opposites attract
🩷 Forbidden romance

Nicole must have crack in her books because I’m addicted once I start 😭 This one was just as good as The Clinch.

I loved getting more of Eden being a mother hen and always looking out for Laila 🥹. Laila getting into underground fighting was so unexpected but so good. It was raw, bloody, intense and I couldn’t stop reading.

Harlow was a literal angel sent to Laila, and I don’t even think she realized how much she needed her. Watching Laila deal with that big loss and hit rock bottom felt so real. I loved being in her head. The internal struggle, the pain, the doubt had me in my feelings.

Nicole really did her big one with this book (and the first one too). I’m obsessed and I need more. Also?? Laila and Harlow are so freakin hot 😮‍💨

If I had one con, it’s that the chemistry sometimes felt a little one sided but maybe that’s because we only got Laila’s POV. I definitely would’ve loved dual POV, especially to see what was going on in Harlow’s head.

This was fun! I like Laila a lot. She is hard headed and stubborn, but she's also fierce and independent. She's a good friend, too. I like Harlow, too. She's determined and loyal. She's kind as well. They're both tough as hell. I really enjoyed their meeting and the spark that was immediately there. The added conflict of Harlow and Eden was fun. I also loved Harlow's family and the love she had for them. I thought the sexual tension between Laila and Harlow was obvious and fun and I loved seeing them get together. Also, Laila's struggle to really find her place felt so real. Overall, it was a great read. It was well written, entertaining, and the MMA aspect was new to me, which I loved.

Laila was on her way to becoming rising star in secure her career in the UFC scene but she tapped out. Laila feels like she let everyone down especially her coach Eden that she can’t face so she takes a job at her uncle restaurant where her friend Vic introduced her to Harlow who runs a fight club who Eden thinks Harlow is blood merchant but we learn why she runs the fight club despite this Harlow is actually caring and funny as they forged a bond Laila starts to love the sport again and regain her confidence. The fight scenes were good I love all the supporting characters who got to shine without overshadowing the main characters.

I received an eARC of this one, and I am really glad I gave it a chance! I read this before having read The Clinch, so I went in pretty blind. It did take me a little to get into it, but once I started getting into the thick of it I was hooked!

With an unfamiliar setting to me (UFC/Fighting), I never felt like I was lost or left behind. Disney made it easy to fall into the world and kept me coming back for more. I am definitely interested in checking out other works by this author!

A special thank you goes to Book Publicity Services for providing me with a copy of this book. Please know that this does not influence my rating or thoughts on the book itself.

tw: assault, bullying, blood, misogyny, severe illness (hepatitis C), parental abandonment, epilepsy, gruesome injury

I usually don’t read a lot of sports romances. I’ve read a couple of hockey romances back in 2016 and 2017, but honestly, sports romances were never something I gravitated towards. So when Book Publicity Services reached out and asked me if I wanted to read a book about MMA fighting, I was so down. I actually enjoy watching MMA fighting. I used to be pretty big in martial arts back in like 2018. I never practiced or anything, but I enjoyed watching fights. I always thought about trying my hand at it, but I just never got around to it, and honestly, I’m too old to do it now.

I truly enjoyed this book so much. I’m surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I know that sounds like a backhanded compliment. But I mean it in a good way. I’m always happy when a book I don’t normally read has me liking it. One of my favorite things about this book was how real it felt. All the characters in the book felt so real. Like they were the type of people I would know in real life and talk to every day. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy it, suspending belief when reading a book, but I also love reading books about people you can find every day. It helps me relate to the book so much more.

Speaking of the characters, Lalia and Harlow were so perfect for each other. I truly enjoyed the growth that Lalia went through. She really annoyed me at first. She was so hard-headed and just so volatile. I know she was a bit younger than me, but I wanted to shake her silly because of the way she was acting. But as the book went on, she grew up, and she started to really grow on me. There was something about her that I started to really enjoy in the end. I think Harlow made a difference. I totally wish we could have gotten her POV. She seemed like she had a good head on her shoulders, and I just loved how cool, calm, and collected she was.

Overall, I enjoyed this one so much. Perhaps I shall give more sports romances a shot. I like how intense they are. The stakes seem higher, and the romances seem a lot more gritty. I enjoyed all the martial arts, and the author was incredibly knowledgeable, at least it seemed to me like they were. All the moves were explained along with the rules and regulations. I just really enjoyed this book, and I think a lot of others will too. Even if you aren’t into MMA, I think this book will please a lot of people.

Tapout is the second sport romance focusing on MMA written by Nicole Disney. The first one “The Clinch” was one of my favorite sport romances I’ve ever read and MMA isn’t even a typical sport I follow. So I was obviously looking forward to this one.

While Eden (MC from the Clinch) still has a part in this book, this story follows around Laila an accomplished fighter who’s trying to make it into the UFC with a few challenges along the way.

What I love and enjoy the most about Nicole Disneys’s writing, is the way she brings those fighting scenes to life and keeps you on the edge of your seat and glued to the book.
It’s impossible to put the book down, while it feels like you are right there.

I also appreciate how all of the characters have some sort of a learning curve in this book. That Characters fail and lose sometimes, which is absolutely human and needed for growth and development in Life.
While the sport part is query present in this book, the romance plot doesn’t come to short either. Disney manages to fit the perfect mix of the MMA and romance into her books.

Without going into too much detail, the rooftop moment was one of my favorites in this one.

If you read and loved The Clinch I am sure you’ll like this one as well.
If you didn’t read the Clinch yet, what are you waiting for? But don’t worry, you can absolutely read this one as a stand-alone, but I recommend to read them both.

Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to read and review this book. This is my honest opinion on the book.

I’ll be honest — I went into Tapout with low expectations because I’m not a sports book person. I know absolutely nothing about UFC fighting, so I wasn’t sure this one would land for me… but wow, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

This book is visceral in every sense of the word. The fight scenes aren’t just written — they’re felt. You tense up, you flinch, you feel the impact right along with the characters. And when it’s not punches flying, it’s hearts fluttering. The awkward flirting and early tension between Laila and Harlow had me both cringing and smiling like a fool.

The spice? Excellent. The emotional beats? Raw and grounded. Both characters feel very human, flaws and all. Laila can be extremely immature at times, but that made her growth more believable. And Harlow — she’s the kind of protective, grounded character who quietly commands the room. I adored her loyalty, especially her fierce love for her nieces and nephews. Those family moments really got me.

If I had one lingering question, it’s this: how exactly did Harlow bankroll this whole operation to begin with? But hey, if that’s my biggest nitpick, that says a lot about how much I enjoyed the ride.

Thank you very much to Nicole Disney and Book Publicity Services for providing me with an electronic copy of this book.

(All opinions are my own)

I really didn’t expect to love this as much as I did.

It was so good, so well written and the romance was incredible. I like sports romances, but I haven’t read many because they’re mainly a straight romance thing, so this was super fun to read. I know absolutely nothing about MMA, but I still found all the fight scenes engaging to read, which is an impressive feat for an author.

Tapout centres around Laila Moretti, an MMA fighter who has just lost her chance to join the UFC. She’s losing faith in herself and giving up on the sport she loves, until she meets Harlow Hayes, her former coach and friends number one enemy, who runs an illegal underground fighting ring. Harlow helps her rediscover her love of the sport and teaches her to have faith in herself and her abilities.

Harlow and Laila are so cute oh my god. I did feel like Laila’s characterisation wasn’t the best, she was lacking in personality a bit, and I didn’t feel super connected to her character, she was quite immature for a 26-year-old. I liked Harlow much more; I thought she was very well written. I will say though that they both had fantastic character growth over the course of the book, and I loved seeing Harlow’s relationship with her family, especially her nieces and nephews, so cute.

If you know me, I struggle to stay awake past 10pm and not only did this book achieve that, but it was so addicting that I stayed up till 1am the week before my final year 12 exams (so maybe not a good thing). I was hooked from the very first page, it was so fast paced and fun to read.

If you’re looking for a lesbian sports romance that is an easy read with great characters and even better romance, I would highly recommend Tapout.

Thank you to Book Publicity Services and the author for the free ARC of Tapout by Nicole Disney in exchange for an honest review.
This was a mixed read for me. On one hand, the sapphic sports romance premise hooked me right away—especially with MMA at the forefront. Every fight scene was electric, incredibly vivid, and clearly written by someone who knows the sport inside and out. Those moments were easily the highlight of the book.
Where it fell short for me was in the characters. I struggled to fully connect with Laila; she came off a bit too harsh for my taste, and it made it difficult to root for her. Harlow was more likable, but I often felt she gave too much of herself without getting enough in return, which threw their dynamic off balance for me.
Even so, there’s a lot here for readers who love gritty, high-stakes romance centered around passion, pain, and fighting for more than just a title. While it didn’t fully land for me emotionally, I can absolutely see others loving it for the intensity and authenticity of the MMA world.
