Dungeons That Surely Slaughter Adventurers, Vol. 1

Rate this book
Dungeons—marvelous labyrinths packed full of dreams where heroes gather in search of fame and fortune. Unfortunately, Eine and Nacht can’t say they feel the same. While all the other reincarnated earthlings get to live out awesome isekai fantasies, the two of them are stuck slaving away as dungeon staff! And whether those inconsiderate adventurers win or lose, either way it means a messy pile of corpses needs tidying up. But if the two are disposing of bodies anyway…then what’s a few more? Why not make their workplace a terrifying deathtrap from which none ever return? Maybe then they’d finally have some peace and quiet!

A bit weird/over the top manga about two girls isekai per jet flight engine and end up in a dungeon they have to manage. It had its good moments, I liked the two girls together, and I did like that they were making the dungeon more exciting/more dangerous (they are still resenting the adventurers as they are stuck for always in this dungeon). The art was pretty nice. I liked meeting the monsters.
But it got a bit samey as we went on and at times a bit too far, but the biggest issue I had and a reason why I am not going to continue the series + rated this volume lower is the baby chapter.
I will put it under spoiler tags [spoiler] so if an otherworld person dies he respawns back at his last sleep point. If a this world person dies he dies. So in this chapter we meet a couple who are from the other world and are adventuring together. As soon as she said she had to tell him something when they woke up I began to doubt. And yep. Because remember what I said about other/this worlders? The baby is a this worlder. A thus the baby is killed and burned and all that. And the woman? She knows. She felt the baby die. She felt the pain. She is now beyond traumatized. I was just going wtf the whole chapter and I wonder what the fuck is wrong with the author. These topics are NOT funny or teehee or whatever. I was surprised to see this book in the library; I have read some of Dowman Sayman's manga in scanlation before, but hadn't expected to see any of it translated. I remembered liking his work as a bit off-kilter, so decided to read this one. It is a satire of the (in my opinion) incredibly overdone and uninteresting isekai genre of people from our reality dying only to be resurrected as overpowered heroes in a fantasy realm that more often than not has no internal logic, but rather resembles an MMORPG. In this book the characters come back as the janitorial staff of a dungeon, their only advantage the ability to respawn after death. A pair of teenage lowlifes originally, they set about in various schemes to make the dungeon more deadly to make their lives easier.

There's a start of larger plot that could be interesting to see how it plays out, but otherwise I found it just a bit too mean-spirited, and far too embedded in pop-cultural references that are just uninteresting to me. I might pick up the next volume to see how things develop, but otherwise not super invested.

Aine and Nacht, two high-school girls die in a bizarre accident, and get reborn in another world. But not as adventurers, like those who get hit by trucks. They're dungeon cleaners. It's a hazardous job, but they reborn every time they die.

Life of cleaning up the dungeon gets boring though, so they start rigging up the dungeon to truly deadly. And soon they have a famous place in their hands that even the top adventurers flock to.

This was fun, in a grim way. It got a bit monotonous towards the end, and even though the ending was a small cliffhanger, I don't need to read more. Art was interesting and good.

I received a free copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

I like the art style and I liked Heimlich. Thats pretty much all I like. I don't like the humor, a few of the jokes were repeated a few times too. I don't like the pacing. And I don't like Aine.

I thought this was pretty funny and quirky. Definitely different. Curious to see how the next one is.

Read more graphic novel reviews at The Graphic Library.

Aine and Nacht, two very careful folks, suddenly find themselves isekai-d, not by Truck-kun, but isekai-d none-the-less. They are not reborn as adventurers but rather lowly dungeon workers forced to clean up the mess left behind by ungrateful, rude adventurers. After one-too-many slights, Aine retools the dungeon with one goal: TPK (total party kill). D&D fans, as well as dungeon masters who wish they could punish uppity players every once in a while, will get a kick out of this manga. Just like a real D&D table, there are plenty of crass jokes and adult situations.
