Sixty Days in the Orc’s Workshop (Monstrous Matrimony): A Cozy Small-Town Monster Romance with Arranged Marriage, Forced Proximity, and a Grumpy/Sunshine Hero

Rate this book
He didn’t want a human. I didn’t want a husband. But stuck under the same roof with a grumpy orc blacksmith—while the whole town watches—makes it impossible to pretend our arranged marriage is purely business.

Dragged from my world as a cult sacrifice, I expected the worst. I didn’t expect the monsters of Wayhome to greet me with lantern-lit streets, meddling neighbors, and the kind of community that could make me want to stay—if I’m not careful.

The Council’s fix for my unstable magic is marry me to Brenn Blackstone and bind my power to him for sixty days. He doesn’t want me in his space. I don’t want to owe anyone my safety—or my heart. But the Union Vow’s tether keeps us far too close for comfort.

And to make matters worse, the town whispers like we’re already a love story.

In sixty days, the magic will end. And... I’m not sure I want it to.

Sixty Days in the Orc’s Workshop is a cozy gothic-fantasy monster romance arranged marriage of convenience, forced proximity, grumpy/sunshine, small-town meddling, slow-burn open-door heat, found family, and a protective orc who falls first and hardest. Perfect for readers who love their romances tender, a little feral, and full of heart.

3rd person POV slow burn ❤️‍🔥

This was such a pleasant surprise. Bree Kincaid is a new‑to‑me author, and the cover alone had me ready to clear my weekend—it’s absolutely stunning. But the story inside? Even cuter. This is a soft, tender, grumpy‑sunshine slow burn that feels like a warm mug of something sweet.

It’s written in third person, which we rarely see in romance anymore, and I actually loved it. I can see how the style might throw some readers off, but for me it made the world feel bigger and the emotions feel quieter in a really intentional way.
It’s a cute, tender slow burn with just enough clean, open‑door spice to keep things warm without ever getting explicit.

The grumpy‑sunshine dynamic works, and the whole “tethered together in a world she didn’t even know existed” premise adds a fun twist. It’s cozy, safe, and quietly romantic—perfect for readers who want monster romance without heavy angst or graphic language. I’ll definitely be reading more from Bree Kincaid.

I just can't continue. The writing feels fragmented. A lot of the time it's just one-word sentences, even in dialogue. Things are mentioned as if the reader already knows what they are and how they work, no explanations for anything. And places and things are continuously talked about as if they're sentient, and considering this is a magic world and the forge has a name and "it listens", it's entirely possible things have feelings too. But it's exasperating that it's never clearly stated, and sometimes it feels like it’s just a figure of speech. The human fMC, who is new in this world, never challenges anything or asks questions, just carries on as if she already knows and there's no need for explanations. She's only been there two days, nobody has explained anything, yet she acts as if she's lived there all her life. Well, she might not need explanations, but I do. And none were forthcoming, so I stopped.

A Beautifully Tender Slow Burn With Unexpected Heat…(see what I did there?!)

This review is genuine:

This book is the perfect blend of tenderness wrapped in tusks, tension, and unexpected vulnerability. What starts as a 60-day arranged marriage between a human woman with barely-controlled magic and a grumpy orc blacksmith slowly transforms into something deeply emotional and unbelievably satisfying; not contrived.

The author takes a premise that could have been purely playful and instead gives it heart. The heroine’s unstable magic isn’t just a quirk—it’s tied to her fears, her longing to belong, and her desire to be seen for more than the chaos she carries. And the orc? Underneath all that gruffness and muscle is a steady, patient warmth that feels like being held in very large, very calloused hands.

Their slow unfurling toward one another—hesitant, sweet, then increasingly bold—makes every tender moment land, and every spicy moment feel earned. The monster-filled small town adds charm and humor, but it’s the emotional intimacy that steals the show. I did not expect to cry at happy moments or moments where they showed their vulnerability and fear because, in their pasts they have been unwanted, but in different ways.

By the end, this arranged marriage feels less like a trope and more like a home being built between two imperfect, aching people who finally found someone who fits. Vulnerable, comforting, and unexpectedly romantic, this book is a delicious treat for anyone who loves grumpy/sunshine dynamics, magical misfires, and slow-burns that end in heat, (but not smutty).

I ABSOLUTELY did not want this novel to end. This was my first ever monster romance book, and it was better than I could have imagined. I hope there will be sequels; I need Orc-human hybrid babies, and more!!

Brenn was heartbroken. He had been part of a sixty day arrangement before. He had cared for her. She left anyway. He was over the idea of a mate. He had all he needed, His forge was where he focused his love. It was solid and true. So how did he get chosen again for such a horrid task. A 60 day trial marriage. He didn't need that kind of trouble again. Somehow he would make it through and be done in 60 days.

Amaia knew what it felt like to less than in other's eyes. Afterall she had been sacrificed to this strange world. Her own mother didn't even lift a finger to save her. She was deemed unworthy of her own people. Now she had to make sure she made it her 60 days so she could move on and find a life for herself. On her terms.

Together they learn one anothers true selves and what they find is worth far more than any 60 days limit. Brenn helps Amaia to realize her own worth and she shows him he is worthy of the love he has never had. I love the way the story took it slow and let the love develop from so many little things. It burrowed into my heart and will always be one of my fave Orc tales.

I love orcs and this book spoke to that part of me that knows if I was ever transported to that world, I would purposely seek out an orc!!! Especially one like Brenn!!!!!

Brenn did not want a human. He was heartbproken, scarred and just over life itself. The only thinkg he loved..that was his was the forge. The forge he knew, understood and was in his blood. Not the human that is tied to him for the next 60 days til she can control her magic in the world.

Amaia was not wanted - not by her family, or her people and definitely not by Brenn. But maybe just may be if she makes herself useful, less of aproblem and more of help he will keep her; he willlet her stay. But Amaia know the truth and her plan is to move on whenthe 60 days are done.

I fell in love with Brenn and Amaia made me feel seen (being a woman of color most). They both knew what it felt like to not be wanted but in the back of their mind and the secret part of thier hearts, they want to be seen, wanted and loved...by each other most!!!

I was quite hopeful when I started this book, because Am didn’t whine and complain, and steadily tried to find her new way. While this is the first time I’ve heard this author, so there may be other books out there for reference, there just seem to be a lot of gaps in the story and things I didn’t understand about Am’s past. I liked the slow build up, and the two main characters didn’t fall into instalove with each other, but tried to learn to navigate their new circumstance without bulldozing the other. So while I was quite grateful that the writing and characters didn’t sound immature, I was a bit disappointed with the chemistry. It just seemed a bit shocking that for such a slow buildup, that the first kiss would lead to him getting her off, and then back to awkward the next day(s). When the other forgesmith came to town, it just felt a bit out of place and left a lot of loose ends, unless this was built up for other books in the series that may have humans going elsewhere. So overall, not a bad read and I would give it 3.5, and would try other books by this author

A delightful deep, but still light, perfectly sized palate cleanser.

⭐⭐⭐ (3.75) | 🫑 (0.5)

I was honestly so hyped when I started reading and found it was written in third person! I know that's not a common preference these days, but it's my favorite.

The premise is simple, quaint, and lovely. The entire story is. It leans heavily into beautiful prose, rather than action - and because of that, we get to dive deep into the thoughts and feelings of our main characters. It ends up being pretty light on dialogue, and between the prose and the characters' personalities, it works perfectly.

Quotes:
Inside, the cottage made space for her breath to settle. She carried her mug to the table, rinsed it at the basin, found a towel and dried it. Small tasks. Order within arm’s reach. She lined up the handles of the other mugs without thinking and forced her hands to stop.
Don’t organize the life of a stranger. Don’t slip into usefulness like an apology for existing.

I didn't have high expectations for this book. Thought I'd have a simple, quick read. But nothing could be further from the truth. This book had everything. I found reading it a pleasant, almost poetic experience. Some readers may not be looking for that, but I found it wonderful to read. It was truly a wonderful reading experience. The writing, the treatment of sadness, pain and wanting to belong somewhere was beautiful to read and also recognizable. Yes, Amaia didn't ask too many questions, but what she had gone through was already a traumatic experience and then you end up in a magical world. Where magic simply existed in everyday things. I couldn't have done it either. And then there is Brenn, big, strong and so sensitive. It was a beautiful, slow, but tender building in the relationship. Too bad more people should communicate like this, that would be a true revelation. So I can really say that I loved this book, it's a pity that the story could have been a little longer. Who knows, we might one day get a glimpse of how their lives develop further.

This novella is dual POV, well written and edited, and a slowburn, mostly sweet, character development focused, male orc (Brenn)/female human (Amaia), forced proximity, fantasy romance. I empathised with the historical pain both characters carried. I appreciated that it was recognised and actively addressed. I enjoyed Brenn’s calm, stoic demeanour and his deeply experienced emotions. I enjoyed Amaia’s growing comfort with her situation and her slow-growing willingness to reach out for what she wanted with Brenn’s encouragement. I enjoyed the deepening intimacy and the comfort and security both characters experienced with each other.

I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.

Quietly Beautiful

Amaia and Brenn were a match that could have flickered out, but they both had qualities to hang on. Amaia's desperate need to be useful, to belong and Brenn's careful distance and respectful caretaking. Brenn was so patient with Amaia's fresh trauma and small ventures to look after his home, garden, forge and him.

There felt like a little too much prose, but it worked for these two. Where silence and sound could have so much meaning. I'm curious about this anti-human sentiment building in the world. The steam was sweet enough, the tension felt pretty mellow in the circumstances. The last whole intimate scene was my speed though.

Will be following this author. 🖤🤌🏾

This was...soothing and calm, a little spicy, but nothing crazy. Some tension, but they worked it out like adults. I liked it. I wouldn't say it's the best thing I've ever read or anything like that. There was certainly spots that could have been cleaned up or even more plot behind why Amaia gets "sacrificed" to Wayhome. Or even a little more about Brenn's former "wife". I know it's a rom and so it usually has a HEA, but this one didn't even have Amaia questioning ANYTHING. She just shrugs her shoulders and gets on with it. IDK, I think I would have a lot longer of a freak out. Decently paced, but I wish there had been more fleshed out world building, I think. More character development and just a little more plot.

The story takes it's time giving both Amira and Brenn time and space to heal from their pasts and begin laying the foundation for the future they both want.

I would have liked more clarification on the rules of the tethering and what type of magic humans willed. What about the cult that sent Amira, why was she sent, was she apart of the cult? I'd also like to know what happened with the other blacksmith?

There is a great deal of potential in this world and I look forward to reading another book in this series.

Wow. What a beautiful well written book that I just couldn’t put down. It was almost like the book was written in poetry. I loved everything that is this series, and I can’t wait to see what happens next. I loved how soft and honest Bren was and i related a lot towards amaia.
These two spoke in action, soft touches, and just a simple look here and there. It was truly breathtaking to read and i loved how it wasn’t overly smutted out, the people of wayword and the town itself is so cute, nosey and cozy. I can’t wait to visit again.

Amaira belongs to a cult. She has never felt loved and now she has been somehow banished to a far off land, Wayhome, where she is connected without real consent to an Orc for the duration of 60 days. She is out of her usual world. But, Brenn Blackstone, although he does not want the involvement and she is aware of that. He is present, frightening, new to her psyche but not cruel. She does not have to prove herself. Deep thought, self esteem issues and finding home. Very tender and tense tale.

Grumpy Green Guy Wins My Heart—and the Series
This one’s the standout. The Orc is delightfully gruff, the heroine is refreshingly grounded, and together they hammer out a romance that’s equal parts tender and hilarious. Their chemistry? Off the charts. The workshop setting adds charm and grit, and the emotional beats hit harder than a war hammer. If I had to pick one monstrous mate to renovate my life, it’s this guy. Five stars and a bonus for the best banter.

Enjoyed this one too

I read the rest of the series first & then came back to this first one. Still impressed with how she weaves a story. Takes damaged souls & brings them new life. I plan to
continue watching for her future. Those that complain about her wording don't understand the intricacies she weaves with her words. Those of us that know, know. Continue on Bree.

When I tell you that this book took my breath away. An absolutely unexpected delight. I remember thinking, she writes differently. I think I get it. And then I read a passage that made me put the book away for a bit. I was astounded at how she embedded the emotions of this story in me.
This book moved something in my universe that I am yet to name.

This book had an interesting direction. Plot line. It was a quick read. Some sex scenes - just letting everyone know.

I think the sentences were choppy just something was "off" and I can't really put my finger on it.

Would I read a follow up book - probably not.

Sweet plot, poetic writing and lovingly description of the small town of Wayhome and its nosy inhabitants. The slowly unfurling romance between Amaia and Brenn after her traumatic arrival in Wayhome. A bit steam, old wounds and a bit drama. Recommended

Worth your time and attention

The story is kind, mostly peaceful. The characters stories tie them together, celebrating choices over mandatory bonds. The writing is interesting, full of metaphors and similes, of description and hope.

I loved this book so much. It was like reading a love letter between two people who were not only falling for each other but trusting themselves again. It was intimate with minimal spice. Not usually my go to but it was beautiful.

A delightful surprise, not the usual instalove of forced proximity tropes. Both protagonists struggled with the situation and were careful of the other. The author sketched the world and the particulars of the two with a delicate touch.

I thought the story was ok. I can't honestly put my finger on it. It was a short, quick and easy read. I think I'll read others stories from this author so I can get a better feel or understanding. It was worth the read.

2.5 Stars rounded up. This felt like reading an essay. I read this and kept trying to figure what was off. These two characters have all the right ingredients but never quite mix; he's in the forge, she's in the kitchen, the reader is in their heads. There's no real banter or growth and I didn't really get the sacrifice in one world wind up in another thing. Told from dual POV, there were a lot a words but it felt like a lot were used to repeat things said and be flowery rather than advance the story.

Nice but writing style is a bit too poetic to be easy reading for me. Kept having to reread lines to make sure I read it right or understood it.
Characters are sweet don't feel very deep.
They're bound together to stabilise the magic but you don't really learn anything about it.
