Set decades after a world war and pandemic, former ranger Flin Davidson captains a freelancer ship out of the devastated city of Halifax, Nova Scotia. While working as a rum runner, the captain encounters a woman who is the target of the most powerful pirate faction on the east coast. With the help of an advanced robotic dog companion, Flin tries to keep his crew safe from those hunting them and ends up at the center of a larger scheme to take control of the region.
I am literally OBSESSED with this story!!! 📚💀 Return of the Blackjack 🏴☠️ by Ben O'Liari, and here are my thoughts:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 stars!
✨ First of all, his writing?? Chef’s kiss!👌 It’s so sensory and immersive that I felt like I was right there. The perfect amount of detail to pull me straight into the scene. 🏴☠️ I could see the whole story playing out in my head like a movie and honestly, this SHOULD be a movie. The worldbuilding was so cool: using real Nova Scotia/real places we know, but layering this gritty, dystopian, slightly-destroyed (ok, pretty destroyed 😅) version on top of it? Iconic. I’m literally going to be walking around the city now imagining what happened there in the book. 😂 💀 And the story itself? SO. SATISFYING. 👏👏👏 🏴☠️ The twists?? THE. TWISTS. 😱 I gasped multiple times, like full jaw-drop level twists. 💀 Final thoughts: Amazing!! And I need Book 2 immediately, please and thank you. 💜 ✨
