I'll do anything to stay on campus for the summer, including live with my ex's brother.
The grumpy hockey star who hates me.
Kicked out by my spiteful ex was supposed to be my rock bottom but I found a new one. Working for my college's hockey team in exchange for free housing. And having to live with Bear Moreau, the defenseman known for his temper on and off the ice.
The two of us go from exchanging threats to roommates in a cramped dorm where the walls are oh so thin. He's convinced I'm the airheaded homecoming queen and I know he's the loner who hates everyone for no reason.
We despise each other and I'll deny the skin-tingling tension between us for as long as I can.
Until he confronts me with a secret.
Bear is on a begrudging celibate streak after what happened at his last university. As much as he hates to admit it, I'm the only woman he can sleep with.
And I'm positive I found the perfect way to get back at my ex.
[Call the Shots is a slowburn college hockey romance with high tension, plenty of spice, and a found family like no other! For a list of CWs please go to the author's site!]
A lover of romances, it’s not unusual to find Bree Hayden curled up with a book, sobbing her eyes out. On the off chance she’s doing real-life things, she resides in Washington, tries to get birds to whistle along with her, and enjoys baking ancient recipes in the hopes one actually tastes good.
Check out Bree’s newsletter for playlists (they’re pretty good), upcoming character art (that’s way better), chances to read her books before anybody else (!!!), and free extra stories about the characters in her novels (the best!!!)
Okay so this book was kind of a hot mess but also weirdly enjoyable? Like I don’t know how a book can feel too long while also feeling like entire chunks were missing, but here we are. The pacing and flow were super disjointed and the characters’ ages/maturity were all over the place - Montoya in particular read like a literal child even though he was supposed to be almost an adult.
Plot-wise? Couldn’t tell you who the villain was. The coach? Xavier? The universe in general?? It was giving ✨confusion✨ And the spice… listen, I love spice. I live for spice. But it felt randomly shoved in at times like, “oh right, this is supposed to be a hockey romance, quick, add sex!” Instead of actually adding to the story.
BUT - and it’s a big but - I did enjoy Bear and June together when the story slowed down enough to focus on them. Bear was lowkey adorable, his obsession with June was kind of everything, and I especially loved how thoughtfully he handled her eating disorder. That whole dynamic was what kept me going through the chaos.
So yeah. A hot mess, confusing, and kind of uneven, but the romance had its moments and I did end up rooting for them.
This book has a cute cover and premise but that’s probably it. I didn’t like the writing and the way this book was structured. everything felt very unemotional and robotic and i honestly was really confused about the half of the plot.
in more details: the book was pretty long and with these pages numbers i wished for more clean and detailed writing. because overall, the book felt so chaotic. something was happening and the next page everyone forgot about it. and then it kept happening. as a reader, i was confused most of the time. some plot lines had no sense. the leaks ? coach, hockey and family drama + so many stuff just kept happening and nothing was developed deep enough. i think the author should have chosen 2 plot lines and focus on them.
i didn’t feel the chemistry at all. both characters were a little annoying but also very boring. i understand the college times and wanting to experiment but they had nothing else to their personalities,
i really hoped this book would melt my heart, but unfortunately it’s just bad.
Thank you to NetGalley and Ink and Inc Publishing for the arc.
The cover was the original reason I signed up for reading the ARC for Call the Shots by Bree Hayden. Plus, I’ve got to get my hockey fix in at least once a week or I turn into a foot ball trope fan. Ha kidding. Our main characters, June and Bear were so adorable together. Their chemistry was written perfectly, balancing out their attraction to each other with June’s sassiness and Bear’s grouchy demeanor. June is battling, literally, an Ex from hell who just happens to be her new roommate Bear’s step brother. Banter was a bit naughty and very funny at the same time, highlighting their faults along with their strengths. There are some very serious situations throughout., but I felt author handled them with care. Don’t think this will be a fast read, it’s not an insta anything. There are several plot lines going at the same time working to a final resolution, For Bear and June at least. I can’t wait for the other team member books in this series. The Gladiator hockey team is not like any I’ve read before and I really liked that about them. They were like the C team. This is no D1 school so their budget is in the toilet. So much going on but It’s a slow scenic drive, so buckle up for a few days. Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC, I’m leaving my review voluntarily.
I really loved Bear and June’s story. Watching their rocky beginning turn into such a tender, supportive relationship was so heartwarming. Their individual growth, along with the way they constantly lifted each other up, truly melted my heart.
The found family vibe with the Gladiators was another favorite part for me, their chaotic but loyal bond made me smile, and I loved how they welcomed June as one of their own. It is a long book, but I appreciated the extra time to really sink into both the romance and the friendships.
This book has approximately 5971 characters and they ALL have backstory. Every paragraph there was a new character being introduced. It was exhausting.
However impossible it may seem, the plot is even more exhausting? From what I can tell, FMC recently (6 months ago?) got dumped by her ex and then went from a straight-A student to literally failing all of her classes? Also she works in the housing office with the ex where they are…both students? Or interns? Or he works there full time? And there aren’t dorms but houses? And also something about her friends totaling his car?
But ALSO the MMC is the step brother of the ex and wants to be friends but the ex…hates him?
And ADDITIONALLY no one knows the FMC was dating the ex because she was fake dating a football player who is mute for years and there was an NDA and her ex was just fine with that?
PLUS the hockey team is 80% transfers and the coach is missing and no assistant coaches will come in without the coach and the rink is trash but they can’t fix it and the college (which is called Marrs for reasons that are never explained) hasn’t just…fired him???
I’m not even going to go into all the backstory these transfers have with each other or the stories of why they transferred bc… it’s all just too much.
If this were a quick read maybe I’d persevere, but I can’t take 532 pages of this. It’s very, very not good.
BIG thank you to Bree Hayden for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of Call the Shots (For the Arena #1)!
Call the Shots is a sports romance that follows the story of June and Bear and their classic sunshine/grumpy trope. June is the popular “type A” girl who winds up as the roommate to the grumpy hockey player Bear (who happens to be her ex-boyfriends step-brother). As this steamy, engaging, and addicting story progresses, the two of them save a failing hockey team, argue constantly, help each other heal from their tumultuous pasts, and fall for each other in the process.
Hayden exceeded my expectations of a sports romance. I went into it expecting a silly fun story where the guy gets the girl, but I was pleasantly enveloped in a beautiful, deeply touching plot. The characters have DEPTH, June and Bear aren’t flat characters, they feel so real. You can tell that Hayden poured everything she had into this story. The tropes found in this book were executed in a manner that wasn’t the usual, the conflicts were resolved quickly and effectively (no crazy third act breakup), and the slight adjustments made this book a 5 star read.
This story touches on topics such as eating disorders, but does so in a way that I have never read before. Hayden doesn’t write “and then she ate a bowl of spaghetti and she was all better!”She illustrates the challenge of recovering in such a profound and healing way.
I highly recommend this book, and not just because I feel the need to say that, I really honestly recommend it. If you want to step into a world with crazy sexual tension, intense story lines, and hilarious characters, then this book is for you.
When I found out Bree Hayden was starting a hockey romance series, I had to read it! I picked up her books for the first time earlier this year and instantly fell in love with her fun writing style—and Call the Shots was no exception. I’ll admit, the nearly 600 pages felt a little daunting at first, but Bree’s storytelling is so engaging that I flew through it. There was always something to keep me hooked—whether it was a hilarious team moment, the flirty banter and rising tension between June and Bear, or a heartwarming scene between the couple. I couldn’t put my Kindle down. This book was such a strong start to the For the Arena series, striking a perfect balance between introducing the team and developing Bear and June’s romance.
I absolutely loved Bear and June’s story. Watching their rocky start slowly grow into a tender, supportive relationship touched my heart. What stood out most was the growth—both individually and as a couple. They’ve both faced so much in their pasts, and it was beautiful to see how they found comfort and strength in each other. Bear and June are each other’s biggest cheerleaders, and yes, they’re sickeningly sweet in the best way. I especially appreciated that we got to spend a good chunk of the book with them as an established couple, rather than just a handful of chapters before the HEA.
Another highlight for me was the found family dynamic. Seeing the Gladiators go from rivals to a true family was heartwarming. They’re a chaotic bunch, but they just work—and they always have each other’s backs. I loved how they embraced June as one of their own, willing to do anything for her.
Call the Shots was such a fantastic start to the For the Arena series, and I can’t wait to see what comes next! Thank you Bree Hayden for letting me a part of your ARC Team!!
This was pretty boring in the first 60% but it picked up at the end I was a fan of June and how she dealt with her problems and I found her relatable and good representation for ed problems
Beta/ARC Review ✨️ (This review contains slight spoilers) Call The Shots (For The Arena Book 1) - Bree Hayden
Where to even start!? Thank you, Bree, for allowing me to be a part of not only your beta team but also your ARC team. It was truly a pleasure to be involved in your writing and editing processes. Working with you has inspired me to start beta/ARC reading more! This was my first experience beta reading, and I truly enjoyed every second! (Sorry for nagging about commas every chapter, lol) 🩷
But! This book... MAN! Enemies to friends to lovers, roommates, college sports romance - the tropes are PERFECT! I loved everything about this book. 🏒 June Basil - Killer June. June's character is so easy to love. From her ups to her downs, I wanted to read everything about her. I truly believe that Bree wrote her ED perfectly. The mental health representation was so beautifully incorporated. 🌱 And of course Bear. Big, cuddly Bear. Forty! I LOVE how Bear goes from tough and cold to sweet and cuddly when it comes to June. He falls so hard! He and June seem like the last two you'd expect to fall in love, but they do it so perfectly. 🧸
Bree Hayden wrote a beautifully amazing book. The team dynamics, the banter, the romance, the conflict... everything was perfect. I couldn't have asked for a better hockey romance, and I can't WAIT for For The Arena book 2.‼️‼️
Once again, thank you, Bree. ❣️

*ARC REVIEW* This book had so many of my favorite tropes, enemies to lovers, found family, and that perfect mix of laugh out loud moments with deeper, more serious ones. The balance was spot on. And of course, there were some deliciously spicy scenes 😍, which I totally expected since this author nailed that in the last book I read from her. It was an enjoyable ride. 😁
What its About: Beau Moreau must prove to the NHL that he isn't going to be a problem after his nudes were leaked. He thinks he will do that by transferring to Marrs University and playing for the Gladiators. What he doesn't realize is that the team is horrible and their arena is falling apart. He will also be forced to work with his stepbrother's ex girlfriend, June, who he cant stand.
My Thoughts: 5/5 stars for me! I almost read this book in a day. The plot was so good and there was constantly something happening. Tons of my favorite tropes lumped into one book! Bear and June are really perfect for each other. Xavier is the actual worst and im so glad things turned out the way they did for him. Bree Hayden you knocked this book out of the park! I cant wait to read the rest of the teams stories. Elijah, Montoya, Fridge, Nick and Denali all have my heart. The way they rally to protect their own just gets me.
Spice rating: 🌶🌶🌶🌶. Not a ton of spice until the later half of the book but those scenes were Hot!
This was an ARC opportunity and im so incredibly grateful for it. All of these thoughts and opinions are my own!
Note: Some of my goodreads shelves can be spoilers

He drew me closer, hunger in his eyes. “I want you possessive. You have my leash, baby. I don’t want you to give me away.”
Should I read in order? This is the first in Hayden’s For the Arena series.
Basic plot: After her ex kicks her out of her house, June finds herself working for the college hockey team – only problem is her ex’s stepbrother is on the team.
Give this a try if you want: - contemporary romance - Houston, Texas setting - college setting (Marrs University) - heroine works as a housing assistant director - size difference – he’s taller - he’s her ex’s stepbrother - animosity to lovers - celibate hero – it’s been awhile for him - roommates - higher steam – 9ish full scenes with some praise and dirty talking
Ages: - it’s college so early 20s?
First line: I began my shift by disappointing the front desk manager of student admissions...for the ten thousandth time.
My thoughts: Oh my gosh this book was a RIDE. Like...I was all over the place with my emotions.
The writing took me awhile to get used to. It was really….chaotic to me? Just felt like it was all over the place and hard to keep up with and it took me forever to really fall into it. I was sooooo annoyed in the first like 25%. I wanted to give up.
But I kept going and there were so many parts that just shocked me in the best way. Like out of nowhere I was laughing and my heart was being grabbed and the parts that I loved, I REALLY loved. There were so many good parts of this book.
Watching the growth of this entire team, watching their protectiveness over each other was so amazing. The side characters were so good and funny. The villain was so villainous and watching every time anything bad happened to him was so satisfying.
I did feel like this book was way, way too long. But that’s me and I don’t love long stories right now. Some of it felt just a bit random and unneeded. (like in a fantasy book that’s long and giving world building details it just feels more excusable??) So I knocked a bit for the slow start and longness but this book was so hilarious and good at the same time.
Few random reading stats for this author # of books read: This is my first Average rating from me: 4 stars Favorite book: This one by default

Full break down on what my ratings above mean here: Overall: How I felt about it everything considered! Readability: How ‘readable’ was the book? Did I fly through it? Did I have to tell myself to pick it back up repeatedly? Were any passages confusing? (I will probably score like (1) is literally unreadable due to formatting/typing errors, etc (2) There were lots of errors that made it difficult to read OR It was extremely confusing and I had to reread passages to make sense of it OR I disliked it so much I had to bribe myself to keep reading (3) I didn’t really want to keep reading and would have preferred to abandon the read and start something else OR some minor continuity issues/confusion (4) I liked it fine, maybe a minor error or 2. I was happy to pick it up when I had time. (5) I never wanted to put this down. I thought about it when I wasn’t reading it. I hid in the bathroom from my kids to read. I threw inappropriate food at my children for dinner so I could read instead.) Feels: Totally subjective to each person but did the book give me any tingles? Any butterflies? Did it rip my heart out (in a good way?) Emotional depth: How well do I feel I know the characters at the end? How much did I feel their emotions throughout the story? Sexual tension: Again, subjective, but how strong was the wanting and longing to me between the characters? A book might have strong sexual tension without a single touch. Romance: Was there romance? Did romantic things happen? This can be actions/words/thoughts of the characters and again is subjective. Sensuality: This is how the intimate scenes are written. Kisses and sexual scenes – how sensual were they? Were they on the mechanical side? Was there emotional pull tied in? Were the details explicit or flowery? These are subjective but generally (1) too short to get a good judgment (2) not all what I'm looking for - very vague or flowery prose (3) either not explicit enough or not enough emotional pull (too mechanical/physically descriptive without the emotions) (4) what I love in a scene (5) absolute perfection - perfect balance of emotional longing and explicit descriptions Sex Scene Length: How long the bedroom scenes are (generally (1) is 1-3 sentences (2) is a few paragraphs to a page-ish (3) is about average, a few pages (4) more well developed scenes, quite a few pages with descriptions (5) the majority of the book takes place in the bedroom. This is always hard to tell for me on audio! Steam Scale: Generally, each flame is a scene. If scenes are super close together I sometimes combine them. If a scene is super short or so vague I don’t know what’s happening, I don’t count it. There’s some levels of grey but generally the number of flames is how many sex scenes there are (I max out at 5 so I’ll put a + after if there’s more than that)
I’ve read a few books by Bree Hayden now and I’ve fallen in love with her fun writing style - and call the shots was no different. I'll admit, the nearly 600 pages felt a little daunting at first, but Bree's storytelling is so engaging that I flew through it. There was always something to keep me hooked-whether it was a hilarious team moment, the flirty banter and rising tension between June and Bear, or a heartwarming scene between the couple. I couldn't put my Kindle down. This book was such a strong start to the For the Arena series, striking a perfect balance between introducing the team and developing Bear and June's romance.
I loved the found family dynamic between the Gladiators. Seeing them going from rivals to a true family was really heartwarming. They’re a chaotic bunch, but they just work - and they always have each others back.
This was such a brilliant start to a new hockey romance series, and I cannot wait to see what comes next for this group!! Thank you Bree for letting me be part of your ARC Team!!
First ARC review: I arc read the first 12 chapters of this and I loved them!! I was hooked from the first chapter, I couldn’t put it down until I had finished them. I really liked both June and Bear and as much as they don’t get on I can tell there is something going on between them and I can’t wait to see how this progresses!! I can’t wait to read the rest of this arc and I urge you to preorder this cause if your into sports romances especially hockey your gonna love it!! brb just gonna read all of Bree’s other works in the meantime.
Thanks to Bree Hayden for giving me the opportunity to preview this arc!
What to expect: June is Bear's stepbrother's ex-girlfriend, and I can't deny that you're in for a treat. Bear transfers to the same university as June and her stepbrother, who are on the (presumably nonexistent) college hockey team. June and Bear will also become roommates, so it'll be a little difficult not to butt heads since they hate each other.
Well, I have to say, at first I was quite confused and didn't quite understand where this book was going. As I continued reading, I couldn't stop; I loved the found family that formed between June and the hockey players. This book also touches on some sensitive topics, and I liked how the author handled them.
So I describe this book as slow at first, as the main characters don't know each other and, more importantly, can't stand each other—the true definition of Hate to Love (also Miscommunication, but because of others). And it's rare to find books where it's described gradually without being heavy! Plus, there's not a single chapter where practically nothing happens; it's a continuous drama, I swear.
Another plus is the character growth, the way they support each other and fight for each other's battles! In short, June is a true queen in how she handles the situation, and Bear is a living green flag (after they both buried the hatchet).
This book was an absolute roller coaster oh my gosh! Every chapter had something happening! there was drama, tension, humour with a sprinkle of unhinged moments. Both June and Bear were fun characters to read along with the rest of the team. I will say (which is the case with most hockey books) when you start a book series, trying to become familiar with all the characters and their names can be a little overwhelming and slightly slow to begin with but by half way I was pretty confident on who was who.
If you want a book that’s all about standing up for yourself and pushing outside the boundaries, then this is the book for you!
ARC Review I really enjoyed Bear and June’s chemistry and the hockey team had a chemistry all their own. Bree did a great job showing a supportive relationship with tough issues including loss, eating disorders, and dysfunctional family dynamics.
At times it felt like too much was happening for these two and some of their conflicts were handled/resolved in ways that didn’t really match their personalities.
Overall an easy, fun, found family sports romance.
Where do I even start? This book was incredible from start to finish. The characters were absolute perfection so easy to love and way too easy to get attached to. Bree did such a phenomenal job bringing this story to life, and I can honestly say this is my favorite hockey romance I’ve ever read (and trust me, I’ve read a lot).
June and Bear? They’re simply meant for each other. Their chemistry leapt off the page, and their story felt so natural yet so special at the same time. I adored every moment between them the banter, the vulnerability, the tension, all of it. Watching their relationship unfold gave me that swoony, giddy feeling that had me grinning like an idiot while reading.
Another thing I loved was getting to see more of the team and their dynamics. Bree has such a gift for writing side characters that feel just as vivid and lovable as the leads. I found myself just as invested in the team’s antics as I was in the romance itself. Montoya, Fridge, Mom (if you know, you know)…every single one of them added so much heart and humor. I genuinely fell in love with the whole team.
And let me just say, this book made me laugh out loud way too many times to count. It’s been a long time since a book managed to do that for me, and it felt so refreshing. The mix of humor, heart, and swoony romance was absolute perfection.
Overall, this book was everything I wanted and more. I’m obsessed, I’m attached, and I’m already itching for a reread. I am so incredibly thankful that I was given the opportunity to ARC read for Bree!!
I loved this book. It’s the first in her new series but it starts with a character for the first four books in the “ Even the score” series, it tells her story and how she ended up where she is. I was on the ARC list got the first 12 chapters I wanted more as soon as I finished them, the slow hatred turned love, the protectiveness and the family element was exactly what the book needed! It’s a brother ex trope. After this book I went and read the other four books in the “even the score” series which all carry on with a character from the previous book telling their story
I really enjoyed this story!! I was given the opportunity to be on my first ever ARC team and I was sooooo glad I loved the story. The main characters banter was so much fun, their found family of crazy boy hockey players brought such a great atmosphere even with all their screw ups but I really enjoyed was the hockey aspect was completely different. They struggled the entire time just to get the season started. Coming together and discovering love at the same time was great! There were times I laughed out loud at the banter and others where I got emotional. If you enjoy a college based romance with lots of ups and downs this story would be great to read!
If you’re looking for your next hockey romance series, this book is it!
Tropes - Dislike to Love - Ex-boyfriend’s stepbrother - Forced proximity - Found Family
Spice Rating: 🌶️🌶️
I went into this book expecting a fluffy hockey romance, but what I got instead was so much better! This book had me in a chokehold. Although chaotic at times, the book truly had everything I look for in a hockey romance—spice, characters with depth, loads of humour and banter.
June and Bear had depth to their characters that I wasn’t expecting. The way the eating disorder was showcased throughout was so well done and showed that it’s not easily fixed and is a constant battle and journey.
I loved the growth Bear had as a character; he truly wanted to be better for June and was actively making those strides. He might be a new book boyfriend for me.
This is the first book I’ve read from Bree Hayden, and it won’t be the last. I’ll be reading her other series while I patiently wait for the next book in the For the Arena series!
Thank you to Bree Hayden and her team for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

WHEW. That was a ride.
This was SO fun! This was a wild and crazy sequence of events wrapped up in a neat little hockey romance bow starring our two main protagonists June and Bear. June, Miss Go-Getter and Super Star Student and Bear, Mr... 6'4 grizzly, grumpy Bear. See where this is going?
The energy and atmosphere felt almost chaotic (in a good way!) with characters both new and returning (from other series) popping in consistently. The chapters are mostly short, swapping between point of views between either June or Bear. Normally I don't care for the short chapter switch-a-roo but Bree was able to take advantage of some of its comedic effects that had me laughing out loud. So you know what? It works. It totally works here.
Speaking of comedy. I want to highlight just how much I loved some of the characters here. You have Bear, the grumpy, moody, and near anti-social hulk of a man. Then put Bear in the middle of some of the most unserious, will-do-dumb-things-for-the-laughs teammates. SO funny. Even Bear had his moments. To me, the romance was cute, and had great build up but the strength of this story was by far its comedic writing.
And like I mentioned, the romance was cute and represented the enemies-to-lovers trope well. Both characters are young 21 year old students with zero interest in the other in the beginning but you could feel the natural gravitation as the story went on. Their banter was fun and though June could be a little much in the beginning, she did grow on me. Oh and the spice? Yes, the spice was very nice. Mhm. Probably some of the most natural I have read in a while too. No closed door romancing here!
My only real criticism was that I felt the pacing was a bit too slow at times with too many side-plots shoved in there that made the story unnecessarily long. However, the writing style was mostly dialogue heavy which made it easy to pick up and read so it did have some balance there.
I definitely would recommend this to anyone who loves hockey romance and wants to read something lighthearted and full of laughs. (There are some serious topics in here, so make sure to check all the triggers first!)
I loved the beginning of a new series by Bree Hayden. This story follows June and Bear. June is dealing from the fallout of a breakup (with a very manipulative man who continually harrasses her) and finds herself sharing a dorm room with Bear, her ex's stepbrother. While the book has a lot of the "usual" tropes in a college hockey romance the enemies to lovers and forced proximity ones, it was SO much more. Yes, the attraction was there from the start (and deliciously spicy at that!), but the story didn't shy away from feelings, emotions, real life problems - eating disorders, family neglect, harassment from an ex-boyfriend, leaked photos that caused embarassment. That's what made it so much more special and unique. But June and Bear worked through their romantic tension and becames friends and then, lovers. Their friend group (mostly the hockey team) are an important part of the book and there are so many storylines that could be enhanced with their own stories (Montoya, Nick, Fridge, Denali). Looking forward to more novels in this series!
I received an ARC copy of this novel and am leaving a voluntary review.
Tropes: Hate to Love Ex's Stepbrother College Romance Grumpy Hockey Player x Campus Princess ED Rep Found Family
Another amazing wholesome story by Bree! I loved reading June and Bear's story so much!!
June found out her boyfriend(Xavier) of 7 years has been cheating on her and the spring semester was a disaster; now she has the summer to get her life back together. With Xavier taking away her housing, she finds a solution in interning for the hockey team, which will provide housing for the summer. But getting her life back together might be more complicated than it seems
Bear's whole hockey career is on the line due to a fight with his former teammate. Marrs is his last hope, but the Marrs hockey team seems to be in ruins. His plan of laying low doesn't seem like it's going to work, but in the end, he'll have more than a hockey team, but a family!
Bear and June were hilarious! I loved the banter between them and honestly, they were so mean to each other in the beginning😭 Watching them grow their relationship and learning about each other was beautiful and wholesome!
I adored that this book was about each of them growing as individuals as well. Both had scars they hadn't dealt with and together they healed and became the best versions of themselves. June in her feminine rage era was 🔥🔥🔥
Found family was a huge part of this story. Seeing the hockey team come together and make a team/family my themselves was wonderful! They fought against the odds and came out victorious!
The book is a LONG ONE! But the story flows so naturally, you don't feel how long it is, and it doesn't feel dragged out at all! Never doubting Bree again!
I love this series and I can't wait for what's next in the Marrsverse!!
Thank you Netgalley and the author for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Things I enjoyed: • I love a good found family moment and this book had it. Bear had no one at the beginning of the book and by the end was surrounded by his friends turned family. • Montoya! I love a boy with golden retriever energy and he was just adorable. 🐶 • I love how sensitive Bear was with June's medical diagnosis. He was prompt when it arose and continued to assist her without making her feel bad. • I love how down bad Bear was for June! 🔥
Things I didn't like: • I didn't like the way June and Bear got together the first time. The bet gave me major ick. • The non-stop fighting. I felt like the writing was trying too hard to show that Bear was a rough hockey player who would fight anyone. Just relax. • There was a lot of character growth from Bear only for that to be ripped away when he went and beat up his stepbrother. That felt unnecessary.
Thank You to Bree Hayden for allowing me to read her book in exchange for an honest review
Really enjoyed this story of June and Bear. It definitely had a story that went from rocky and awkward to really loving and genuine which showcased growth for the characters individually but also as individuals allowing me to connect the characters, wanting them to be together because of how much they there for each other, being each other's support system. I loved all the secondary characters and connected to them as well - making me excited to read their stories.
The romance, chemistry an spice was palpable and really took off towards the end - allowing the readers to yearn for June and Bear to get together. I also loved the extra stories - really making me love these characters beyond just the books ending but in their epilogues and extra stories.
Thank you Bree Hayden for the opportunity to read this ARC book! This is the second book I’ve read by you and I loved it just as much as the first one. Bear and June are so cute!!! I can’t get over it. I love how her books go into problems people don’t like to talk about, it really helps people show it’s okay. June from beginning to end was a completely different person, she got so much stronger and I love that for her. Same thing with Bear but he finally let his guard down. I like how this was connected to the other series. I do wish we got to read some of the cute things Bear did for June as he was doing them instead of after the fact or from someone else. Other than that it was really enjoyable to read. I definitely recommend books by Bree Hayden!!
i had fun with this book but it was also so messy. i felt the first 15-20% or so was a lot of drama just to set up conflicts for later in the story and it was a lot to take in when trying to get into the book. getting past that though, i started to really enjoy this one.
there were a lot of characters but montoya was hands down my favorite and i hope to see a standalone for him in the future (i am his defense attorney truly). i also did adore june, she was a really good FMC and i truly admire her strength though out the situations she faced.
this was my first time reading anything by this author but i do think that this series is something i am seated for.
huge thank you to the author for the arc in exchange for an honest review :)
What a good time!! This wasn't like any of the other sports romances I've read. There's so much plot, like a chaotic amount of plot. But also such good side character crumbs. The found family is so sweet and the banter between everyone had me giggling!!
Enemies to lovers, ex's step brother. And their dynamic was brutal to start... like actual enemies. And then when we come around???? Soooo good. And his teammates calling him out and side eyeing him was hilarious and fantastic!
I can't wait to go back and read the original series. This is easily going to be my go to in between my other darker reads.
