Thank you to Colored Pages Book Tours and Abrams Books for the ARC of He’s the Devil. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book is equal parts horny, hot mess, and absolutely horrific.
He’s the Devil leans fully into its unhinged premise and does not apologize for it. Simon is a deeply unlikable main character, and I say that with affection. I have read plenty of books with morally questionable or outright unpleasant narrators, and usually that does not impact my enjoyment. Here, it actually enhanced it. There were moments where I was actively wishing the worst for him, which somehow made the reading experience even more satisfying.
The descent is messy in the best way. You can see many of the twists coming, but that does not soften the blow. In some ways, it makes it worse. There is something deeply upsetting about watching a character walk straight toward the obvious disaster and being powerless to stop it.
The body horror here is light but effective, more creeping and visceral than over-the-top grotesque, and it pairs almost comically well with the heavy dose of chaotic desire running through the story. The book balances humor and horror in a way that feels deliberate. It is gross, funny, unsettling, and strangely compelling all at once.
If you like your literary thrillers with possession themes, obsession, morally dubious protagonists, and a generous splash of messy, uncomfortable energy, this one delivers. It is chaotic. It is unsettling. It is a ride.
