Ladies and Gentleman, the song stylings of Nick Winters.

Star Wars!
Give me those Star Wars!
Nothing but Star Wars -
Don't let them end.
Ah, Star Wars!
If they should bar wars,
Please let these Star Wars stay!
And hey,
How about that nutty Star Wars bar?
Can you believe all the creatures in there?
And hey,
Darth Vader in that black and evil mask -
Did he scare you as much as he scared me?
Star Wars,
Those near and far wars,
Star Wars!

So, this is my first foray into anything Star Wars that isn’t the first three movies (Episodes IV, V, VI, nerds) (Really, the first two and a half, f**king Ewoks – see above), the racing game for the Nintendo 64 (My son loved that game!), the unplayable SNES game based on Empire Strikes Back (We hated that f**king game) and watching bits and pieces of the fourth, fifth and sixth movies (I, II, III, nerds) on cable – clones, Samuel L. Jackson and little kid Vader, right?

So, I never named my kid Wookie or got a tattoo of Boba Fett on my ass. I don’t have any Star Wars fiction or memorabilia or toys on display (unopened, in pristine packaging, of course). My wife would never be subjected to a Princess Leia metal bikini (she has a Red Sonja model). I don’t make R2D2 sounds when I ride the elevator by myself.

Star Wars, Meh Wars.

So, why did you read this, Jeff?

A fair question, Random Goodreader.

Answer: I picked it up real cheap. It’s one of those Marvel Epic collection things and it’s huge and I got it for a few bucks.

The stories take place around the end of The Return of the Jedi and after because the galaxy is the limit and these stories weave in and out of film continuity, only involving the original characters a few times.

Add a few hundred new characters and viola – Star Wars stuff to read for the rabid fan boys/girls, but sorta boys. See.

Mara Jade – She’s Emperor Palpatine’s other hand. The other other hand being Darth Vader. She’s got the force within her and she uses it to dispatch the enemies of the Emperor…

…though she’s deep undercover as an exotic private dancer, a dancer for money, any old music will do.

She’s fairly badass, but the problem with this chunk of Star Wars is the writing. Timothy Zahn seems to take some of the worst dialogue from George Lucas and multiplies it by 1000. By Captain Kirk’s low-hanging nut sack, I almost stopped reading this tome.

Good character – poorly served.

I might have to rethink the Star Wars toy thing. *sigh*

Next, you have Guri, the hot babe assassin droid, who wants to be a real girl, not a hot babe assassin droid.

This tale utilizes the original movie characters quite well.

Beyond that, the standouts are:

Big Gizz (heh) and pals gets in trouble with the Hutts.

Boba Fett isn’t really dead.

Of course not.

Isn’t there some sort of Boba Fett cult?

The Ewoks aren’t so cuddy after all.

Don’t scorn the Wookie!

It’ll bite you in the ass eventually.

Bottom Line : As someone with a passing interest in Star Wars, this volume was, for the most part, entertaining. If you’re a real fan, you probably already have a Mara Jade tattoo on your chest.

A great collection of Star Wars comics with lots of tie-ins to the expanded universe. It starts off with a new Mara Jade story telling what happened to her after the Emperor's death. If you don't know who Mara Jade is, you should find out. Timothy Zahn wrote the first 3 EU books and they are fantastic. Zahn also writes Mara's story here. We also have a followup to the Shadows of the Empire novel with some great art by Ron Randall. All in all a great group of Star Wars stories.

Some of these comics were great: action-packed, well-drawn stories featuring characters I'd only read about before, such as Mara Jade.

However, others were horribly drawn and/or simply inane.

Add to that some sultriness as well as occasional blood and profanity, and this was rather the mixed bag.

This review was originally posted on my review blog Deanna Writes:
So...I really love the Star Wars Expanded Universe (now the not canon "legends" alternative timeline books), and I love Mara Jade, the original character that Timothy Zahn created in the Hand of Thrawn novels. So of course I always had this comic on my list to own/read. The comic starts off strong with six issues of Mara Jade comics, which I have to admit were my favorite in this one. I loved the plot line and how she just kicked ass and took names, and I was really fond of the artwork.

I ended up liking a lot of the other comics, and thought it was interesting that some of these explored stories outside of the three heroes. Like what happens to one of the guards from Jabba's palace after his demise, and what happens to some of Jabba's other smugglers. I also loved the Shadows of the Empire comics. Like the Mara Jade comics, I loved both the artwork and the plot equally.

Some of the stories didn't grab me, and I think it was because of the artwork. One was the Do Or Do Not comic. The art didn't really look like the characters, and it was so short that it didn't really seem like it had a point. The other one that I wasn't really fond of due to the art was Lando's Commandos On Eagles' Wings. The plot on this one was interesting but the artwork just looked like Invader Zim, which made it seem out of place.

Besides a few nit-picky things from me, I really enjoyed this comic. It's a pretty thick book, and it was a little pricy because it is all in color, but it was totally worth it. My love of Star Wars has no chance of dying, so I might be a little biased with this review. If you're a fan of the expanded universe or good comics I recommend it.

So, this is my first foray into the New Republic era of Dark Horse comics, and it is an incredibly 1990s male gaze oriented collection. The stories are by-and-large entertaining, and the artwork is pretty good, but nowhere near the level of the Dark Times of Knights of the Old Republic quality.

The first set of stories deal with Mara Jade's life soon after the death of Palpatine, escaping from Ysanne Isard's clutches on Coruscant, and essentially becoming a freelance Jedi in a galaxy without Jedi. This was the best part of the book.

Then we get on to the second set of stories, which detail the further adventures of Guri (an android-like assassin droid), who was an integral part of the Shadows of the Empire multimedia event. I mentioned the male gaze earlier, and this is the kind of thing I was referring to:

It's a bit distracting from the story, and puts it squarely into the bucket of adolescent male fantasy. That aside, it's not a terrible story, just painfully average.

The rest of the book has some fun adventures with some swoop thugs, and a Boba Fett tale.

Almost last, there is a pretty dodgy story about Chewbacca getting jealous of Leia because of her place in Han's affections. Not the best storyline, and the punchline where all is forgiven and Chewie takes Leia shopping seems breathtakingly regressive for the Star Wars universe.

Overall, 3.5 stars - reduced to 3 stars for the '90s sexism.

The Star Wars New Republic Epic Collection volume 1 collects various stories and miniseries that take place at various times immediately after the events of Return of the Jedi. It collects two miniseries "Mara Jade: By The Emperor's Hand" and "Shadows of the Empire: Evolution" as well as couple one shot comics and 10 short comics from the Star Wars Tales series. I want to preface this review by saying that if you can, you should really read the SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE graphic novel before you read this collection. A lot of the comics in here directly relate to that particular story.

The collection start with the miniseries "Mara Jade: By The Emperor's Hand" which focuses on Mara Jade's journey after Palpatine was killed at the end of Return of the Jedi. She is initially investigating a rising black market gang called Black Sun who is trying to revive Prince Xisor's business from SHADOW OF THE EMPIRE (not quite necessary to read to understand what's going on here, but certainly shouldn't be ignored by any casual Star Wars fan). When she returns she is almost immediately arrested and put into a cell, certain to be killed by a power hungry lackey under Palpatine's command. She escapes and finds out the Black Sun is still at large, so she goes into hiding while continuing her final mission from the Emperor. It's not bad series at all, written by two of the best Star Wars novel authors Timothy Zahn (who created Mara Jade for his phenomenal Thrawn Trilogy) and Michael Stackpole (primary author of the X-Wing series). Mara Jade is a very interesting character who seems to fit seamlessly into the Star Wars universe despite not being a character we ever saw on screen and she carries the story along very well here. It seems a bit long though, there is a lot of over explaining simple things and reiterating things we already know.

Following this another quick Mara Jade story from Tales called "Mara Jade: A Night on the Town". It's also written by Zahn and takes place shortly after the events of the previous storyline in the collection. Mara Jade tries to lay low in a seedy town, but soon finds out a former Imperial Governor is being held hostage by Rebel forces in the town. She decides to save him...I think? I don't know the story was very confusing and moved a bit too quickly I think. Not very memorable though, the ending was cool.

"Do or Do Not" is another Tale that takes place a few days after the end of Return of the Jedi. Luke is worried about the Jedi ghosts not appearing to him anymore and confides in Leia about his worries. It's a sweet little tale and the sentimental tone carries over to the next Tale "Free Memory". C3PO is tasked with locating R2-D2 for some maintenance and he finds his friend looking at old holo-messages he's stored over the years that the original trilogy happens. Both stories have amazing artwork and stand out here.

"Landon's Commandos: On Eagles' Wings" is a tale that finds Lando in charge of a ragtag group of pilots and fighters tasked with taking down some renegade pirates who drive TIE Interceptors. His team includes a former Imperial Air Marshal which causes animosity among some of the crew. It's a decent little story, but suffers from introducing too many new faces in a short amount of time and can be confusing to follow during the action scenes. Yet another Tale where the artwork and ending stand out.

The only other multi issue story arc in this collection, SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE: EVOLUTION follows the female droid Guri, who was Prince Xizor's personal assassin, as she attempts to erase the memories of being under his control. Little does she know two nefarious groups are tracking her and hope to use her for their own purposes, one of those groups being chased by Luke, Leia, and Han. It's a good comic and decent followup to SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE, I like that it wasn't as busy as the Mara Jade story. The presence of our heroes from the original trilogy is nice, but they are kind of relegated to being comic relief in a lot of scenes.

THE JABBA TAPE is a one-short comic that focuses on a couple of Jabba's thugs we met in SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE. Big Gizz and Spiker want to claim a piece of Jabba's empire after he died, they feel entitled to it. They decide to go after a hidden ship he had ready in case he needed to escape Tantooine, but a relative of Jabba's also wants that ship. The Tales comic that follows this, "Sand Blasted" further continues the adventures of these two dolts, namely them encountering a battle droid from the Clone Wars era. Both of these are highly enjoyable and funny with some great artwork. A nice break from the serious tone of the preceding comics and is a rare instance of seeing Clone Wars era crossing over into the post-Empire era.

"Three Against the Galaxy" tells the story of Jabba's boar-faced guard from RETURN OF THE JEDI after Jabba's death. He gets wrongfully arrested in a bar fight, imprisoned and put to work some mines. His fate soon crosses over with the fate of the mine-owners daughter and a Jawa with a bounty on his head. This is a surprisingly emotional and enjoyable story, I hope to see more of these three characters later on.

Things get a bit lighthearted with "Apocalypse Endor", a Tale about an Imperial survivor of the attack on Endor sitting in a bar describing the atrocities the Ewoks committed during that battle. It's insane, disturbing, and might be my favorite comic in this collection. "Marooned" is another Tale about an Imperial survivor who is forced to team up with a lost Rebel soldier during that attack to find their way through the wilderness. It's quite good, I really enjoyed the ending.

BOBA FETT: TWIN ENGINES OF DESTRUCTION finds our favorite bounty hunter, apparently he escaped the Sarlacc pit from RETURN OF THE JEDI, having to confront someone impersonating him to collect bounties. We get to see Dengar, one of the bounty hunters we saw briefly in EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, helping Boba find the guy. It's a great comic, Boba Fett is awesome in this.

"A Wookie Scorned" and "Problem Solvers" are two quick, humorous Tales about Chewie and Han. The first one finds Han ditching Chewie for Leia a bunch of times and Chewie getting jealous of Leia. The latter has Han using the Ewoks to solve computer issues in new Rebel station on Endor. Both are okay and rather funny, great way to end this collection.

Putting aside the exclusion of SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE (I get it, it doesn't fit with the post-JEDI theme), this is a decent collection of comics. Aside from the opening Mara Jade collection, there is nothing that too heavy or overblown here. The Star Wars Tales really are the star of this collection I think, some of them really stand out. If anything read it for the "Apocalypse Endor" short story.

Always happy to read a Mara Jade story! As well as various other characters getting to shine a bit. Dark Horse Comics did a great job with Star Wars. and I love these stories being kept in print through Marvel's Epic Collection! MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!

Aside from the opening issues of Mara Jade, and one super short “Tales” issue, this very first Star Wars Epic collection is pretty much a dud all the way through.

There are very little new ideas or anything that brings depth and breadth to this era of Star Wars. Nearly everything in this first collection is either goofy, boring, non sensical, or drawn/illustrated terribly. I guess Perry’s pointless “Shadows of the Empire: Evolution” has the best illustrations but that doesn’t justify a lame plot.

I know this isn’t strictly the fault of Marvel here. This era of Star Wars was weird and trying to collect everything that’s supposed to take place after the fall of the empire into a coherent and chronological timeline from 2 separate publishers is going to display some pretty crappy issues, but at least they’re all here in one volume. Thankfully the Epic Star Wars series DOES get better as things start to even out in the issues, but this first volume is a huge disappointment…

It was interesting to get a Mara Jade just post Return of the Jedi storyline, where she's attempting to avoid Isard and learning to fend for herself. There's a whole storyline where she realizes that a mission she thought she completed wasn't and then spent her time trying to complete it. The Guri decides to no longer be an assassin storyline was interesting too. This was the first time I've encountered Guri and I was able to follow along easily. A few of the one shots were okay, but a lot of it was filler. I could've done without the gratuitous 90's male-gaze art. Leia having a jealous possessive fit and yelling at Han, blaming him any time another female character so much as looked at him seem ooc. Also Luke's wistful pining that it's a shame Leia is his sister was not something I needed to read twice.

This epic collection I found to just be okay. My favorite story was the Mara Jade series by far, as I liked how it fleshed out her character as well as the state of the criminal underworld shortly after RotJ. I also enjoyed The Jabba Tape and the Boba Fett one-shots in this. I was not a huge fan of the Shadows of the Empire continuation, as I found the mini-series to be a bit messy, though there were some good moments with Luke, Leia, and Han. As per usual, the tales comics were more often misses than hits. My favorite was probably the one about the Clone marooned on Endor. In general, I would say this epic collection is skippable unless you particularly want to read the Mara Jade and Shadows of the Empire stories.

Most of these stories had very middling art. Mara's stories were well written, but the line work was underwhelming, and Guri's story was both boring and containing uninspiring art. It did, on the bright side, remind me of the times when EU authors got to be in charge of characters they'd introduced to a GFFA, and that has a lot of merit. The Killian Plunket line work was easily the best part of this volume, and the later parts of the anthology were a welcome relief after the Guri snooze fest. (Boba Fett!)

Overall a very solid collection of stories, but there are a few duds in here, namely with some weird characterization in one story - Luke is seen encouraging Leia to have children with Han so Luke can train their children (this is apparently just after the Battle of Endor), but I really enjoyed the story with Mara Jade, and the one with Guri was entertaining, if a little predictable.
Generally the art shone through and each new art style carried the story in different ways.

A mixed bag of comic issues and stories sourced from the Star Wars Galaxy magazine. The short vignettes (Star wars Tales) are hands down the best stuff here. “Three Against the Galaxy”, the story of the lone Gamorran guard to make it out of Jabbas palace is the best of these. If the other volumes in this collection have material as good as that I’ll definitely seek it out.

Plenty of star wars material.

I got this as a prime freebie. A lot of material, took a week to wade through it all. Most of it was good artwork. The only thing I didn't like was the "cute" intros by the staff, those are an artist's conceit.

WARNING! A SPOILER APPROACHES! PREPARE TO ENGAGE!

Just bought this on Kindle for my thirtieth birthday and I just finished volume one.

Alright, backstory. This is set immediately after of Return of the Jedi, and is set in the Legends Universe, so fans of the Sequel Trilogy/The Anthology Films/The Mandalorian will see some discrepancies with the overall story of the Star Wars Saga. It's mostly vignettes and short stories told in comic book form, a good amount of which I was pleasantly surprised to have read before and get to read again. Since many of the stories are written by different authors, they all have different artwork, ranging from realistic to comical to even slight anime-like feel.

The stories include the following tales and adventures:
- By the Emperor's Hand: A Mara Jade story that helps tie in the Thrawn Trilogy to the Original Trilogy. Mara is on a routine assignment to investigate the remnants of Black Sun Crime Syndicate and its mysterious new master, Dequc, when she receives a psychic message informing her of Palpatine's death and her new mission to hunt down and kill Luke Skywalker. But first, she has to break out of prison thanks to Ysane Isard, and finish the Dequc mission. (I actually read this a long time ago in a library a few times. Really good tie-in for the Thrawn Trilogy and also X-Wing series).
- Some various adventures of Lando Calrissian, always a good time there.
- A one-shot story about a young woman teaming up with a Jawa and an unemployed Gamorrean who saved her life that evokes shades of Guardians of the Galaxy (The Movies)
- An epic spin-off resolution story to Shadows of the Empire revolving around the Assassin Droid Gari (Not sure if I spelled the name right, BTW) who is seeking to rewrite her brain. I found the entire story about Gari very entertaining, especially after having watched Blade Runner and Prometheus by Ridley Scott.
- Some comedic tales about what happened after Jabba died.
- A Tie-Into the story of Boba Fett back when he wasn't an unmodified clone of Jango Fett's and was an official Mandalorian who had betrayed his people. There's a good shout-out to the 'A Long Time Ago...' comics by Marvel, by the way, in that story. It's only in one panel, but it's a good one if you have read any of the comics about Boba Fett in that series.
- A funny bromance comic about Han and Chewie which has our favorite Wookie feeling neglected and overlooked and how he tries to get Han's attention.
- A hilarious one-shot comic about Ewoks as I.T. guys.
- A poignant yet funny one-shot set on Endor's Moon about two troopers, one from the Alliance, one from the Empire, working together when they are accidentally left behind on the Sanctuary Moon.

I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed reading all of these stories that I hadn't read before, and I loved re-visiting most of the ones I hadn't read in a long time. Can't wait to read the others.

May the Force be with You!

This was overall... Ok. There is a lot of fun stuff but there are also some comics that really didn't need to be here, and some with not so good art. Would reccomend it purely off the fact that the epic collections after this are a major improvement and it would suck to start from number 2. 6/10

Most of the stories in this collection were good. A bunch were really bad and I am amazed they were allowed to see the light of day. Three against the Galaxy was great! It had the feel of the original Star Wars material just accidental heroes. The Jaba Tape and Sand Blasted had the most entertaining cast of misfit criminal characters. Marooned was the most spiritual of soldiers with no more war to fight with a surviving Stoomtrooper and Rebel Commando abandoned on the Endor Moon.

An interesting mish mosh of various post-Jedi comics. Some of the one-off ones were good, others not so much (I rather love the Apocalypse Endor one in particular); the Mara Jade series was very good, the Guri was alright but not great. Really, I was hoping for more purposeful development of characters and the overall universe story than existed in most of the one-offs.
