A Wild Ride With a Sudden Stop
Konrath’s latest Jack Daniels adventure is packed with his usual brand of chaos, and the humor is everywhere. Whether you find those puns endearing or groan‑worthy depends on how much you enjoy jokes that feel like they were crafted by an enthusiastic ten year old. I laughed, I winced, and sometimes I did both at once.
Sam’s evolution is one of the best parts. She’s sharper, more confident, and fully aware of it. At one point she even compares herself to Machiavelli’s Prince, and honestly, she’s not wrong. She’s becoming exactly the kind of calculating force the series has been building toward.
The whole crew shows up, even the ones who shouldn’t be able to, because the Konrathverse doesn’t bother with normal rules. There’s a surprising amount of talk about forgiveness, and even Jack gets pulled into that circle. It’s oddly sweet, in a chaotic, Konrath‑style way.
But once Sam and Harry are kidnapped, the playful tone snaps. The jokes stop, the tension spikes, and the traitor question hangs over everything. You can practically feel Konrath grinning as he sets up the reveal.
And then comes the cliffhanger. He warns you, but I didn’t expect that. If my phone weren’t so expensive, I might have thrown it. It’s a brutal place to stop, and I can absolutely imagine the author rubbing his hands together, delighted by the collective reader meltdown.
One important note for anyone new to the series: this is not a standalone. The history matters, the relationships matter, and without that background, the emotional beats won’t land the same way. For longtime fans, though, it’s another wild, messy, entertaining chapter with a cliff that hits like a punch.

Truly Scrumptious!!!
Ooooo-Wheeeee!!! What a ride!!! Thank you J.A. Konrath for always making the wait worthwhile!! I was weak with laughter, cackling like a loon one minute. Then gasping with horror in quiet astonishment the next…Jack, Harry, and Herb, have felt like kinfolk to me since the “Whiskey Sour” days. September 29, 2026 cannot get here quick enough!!! The last few books in this series have been going off the rails (not in a good way) but this is a return to form for Jack Daniels & Co. A more mature story line, better character development and a cliff hanger ending that made me regret not waiting another month for the next instalment. Great read but I still hate that kid.
