A bad-boy NFL star meets his match in a feisty single mom with this sweet, steamy, and emotional novel about second chances and breaking the rules of romance.
Raising my ten-year-old son, running an animal rescue, and caring for my grandfather leaves zero time for complications, let alone cocky athletes who get under my skin. Too bad the universe didn’t get the memo.
Because a big complication just crashed into my life—literally—in the form of towering NFL quarterback Archer Evans, sentenced to community service at my shelter after a scandal. Despite his mistakes, I try not to judge. He’s got demons of his own, and even though he’s made it perfectly clear he wants me, the last thing he needs is a wary single mom seeing the vulnerable man beneath the muscles and the attitude.
Though I’ll admit, I’m tempted to look.
Not that I’d cave. With his notoriety, Archer would never make it past date two of my eight-date rule. I want simple. Safe. He’s too successful. Too arrogant. Too everything. The definition of complicated.
But as the walls around Archer start to crumble, so do mine. And this complication feels suspiciously like love.
This was really good, the usual angsty story we expect from Sorenson.
Karla always writes great complicated characters with great chemistry. So much depth and emotion and her side characters add so much. But the ending was so cheesy I found myself cringing, but I’m sure many will love it as he humiliates himself for her quite nicely.
Also buckle up for a very slow burn, no sexy time until the very last moment and the last four or so chapters were just an extended epilogue.
Also also, I will always appreciate a sportsball romance with zero sportsball in it.
This is really a little over a four star read because of the long ending but I’m forgiving it and boosting it up because this author is very talented.

Got the arc and the audiobook arc, I will be doing a tandem! Wooohooooo! Thanks to Karla for giving me access to both!
I count Karla Sorensen as one of my favorite authors for a reason, every book i read from her catalogue is either a complete binge or a five-star emotional rollercoaster. How To Not Fall in Love did not disappoint in that regard, because it was the perfect in between and i absolutely loved everything about it.
the story follows a single mom trying to make end meets while working at a dog shelter, and an mmc who’s a well-known football player completely lost in his own life, who ends up crashing into that same shelter. their dynamic started with an enemies-to-lovers edge but slowly shifted into something softer that was rooted in friendship, and i really loved that progression.
the mmc was such a layered character. at first, he came off as a complete asshole, but the more we learned about him, the more his behavior started to make sense. i appreciated how his character unfolded, especially how he tried to be better, particularly knowing how much the fmc’s child looked up to him. that added so much emotional weight to his growth.
there was also a plot twist i genuinely didn’t see coming, which made the story even more engaging. overall, it was such an enjoyable, emotional read, with that signature Karla Sorensen writing that just pulls you in so effortlessly.
i’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a single mom romance with a lot of heart, emotion, and character growth. and i really hope we get a book about the mmc’s sister, because i’d pick that up just as fast.
many thanks to the publisher & the author for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review
Once again, even after some time, this author managed to win me over with her writing and the characters she creates. I still think about Griffin and Ruby from Lessons in Heartbreak, and now Remi and Archer have earned their place in my mind too.
From the very first pages, I found myself completely hooked: I devoured this book so quickly and got swept up in their story before I even realized it. I really loved the way two people from different worlds collide, clash, and slowly get to know each other… until it turns into something deeper.
Between the two, Archer’s POV was a bit harder for me to get into at the beginning. His backstory—growing up in a family where love was tied to perfection—felt quite linear at first, and it didn’t immediately stand out to me. However, his emotional growth, and especially his tenderness toward the end, completely melted me.
Remi, on the other hand, had my heart from page one. Her strength, her love for her family, and her passion for her work made her such an easy character to root for. I admired her so much and was cheering for her the whole time.
The supporting characters were wonderful, adding humor, depth, and warmth to the story—Remi’s grandpa Harold and son Gavin, Archer’s playful sister Analise, the football teammates, and of course the shelter dogs all left their mark.
That said, I did feel a bit lost toward the end. I struggled to fully grasp how they transitioned into starting a relationship—it felt a little unclear and pulled me out of the story for a moment. Still, the ending itself was beautiful, emotional, and definitely delivered.
A small note: I haven’t read Single Dad Dilemma yet, and I’ve seen many readers recommend reading it first to better understand Archer. I didn’t… and of course, I accidentally spoiled myself. Genius move.
Overall, this was a sweet and emotional romance with great banter, godd tension, character dynamics, and a satisfying HEA. One of the highlights of this story is how both characters navigate their growing connection through emotional moments rather than focusing solely on physical attraction.
Thanks to Montlake and NetGalley for the eARC, even though in this case there wasn’t an option to download it directly to Kindle.
Karla did it again!! After meeting Archer in Single Dad Dilemma, I KNEW there was more to him than the image he presented to the world.
His redemption arc was sooooooooo good, and he met his perfect match in Remi! They were more alike than first meets the eye, which contributed to their innate understanding of the other’s heart. The author is know for her slow burns that stem from the couple’s natural chemistry. It’s not just about the physical aspect; Karla builds up the emotional connection so you are 1000% rooting for them by the time they realize they can make their relationship work.
In between the romance, there were so many cozy moments (i.e., all the scenes with Pops and Gavin, the puppies, Archer’s teammates) that reminded me why Karla’s books always feel like coming home!
What to Expect: bad boy quarterback, single mom, forced proximity, he falls first, cute puppies
Content Warnings: toxic parent (on page) mentions of drug/alcohol use (off page)
When we met Archer Evans in Single Dad Dilemma (Coach King and Lily), I had no idea just how quickly I would be cheering for him to win the happily ever after with one Remi Sinclair.
But of course I should have known better because I devour anything Karla Sorensen writes.
Other reasons I am obsessed with this book include (but not limited to) the following:
🏈Remi’s 10-years old son Gavin will melt your heart… and watching Archer want to be the best for him and earn his love too is just 🥰
🏈Remi’s grandfather Harold gives all the squishy feelings made better by his stubbornness
🏈Bandit. Scout. Daisy. All the dogs. 🐶
🏈Archer’s relationship with his younger sister Analise
🏈Delightful, golden retriever, Buffalo Storm’s rookie receiver Grant Williams will put a permanent smile on your face 😊 (please give him a book)
Fair warning— get ready for a slowwwwww burn…but don’t worry, when they come together it is 🔥🔥🔥 💕💕💕✨✨✨🥰🥰🥰
I absolutely loved Archer and Remi’s story. This book pulled me in from the very beginning and did not let go. It made me laugh and made me emotional. I loved watching Archer try to become the man Remi and Gavin deserved, and seeing Remi slowly let her guard down. Their chemistry was amazing, but what I loved most was the growth and healing between them and how they truly made each other better. I also loved the side characters and the humor and depth they brought to the story. This story was heartfelt, emotional, and funny. I completely devoured this book.
Thanks to NetGalley and Montlake for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Gahhh Karla sure knows how to hit me in my feels 🥹 that epilogue especially omg!
Safe to say I loved this one! It was a really easy read especially with the audiobook because the narrators were amazing.
I loved that not all was as it seemed and how everything unfolds! I lovvvveeedd how slow burn this one was! I was salivating over the tension between Archer and Remi! Their chemistry made it all worth it!
I love a sports and single parent romance combined, add baggage that they both need to overcome and some twists and it was a really good time! 😍
Just finished this one. And yep, I’m sitting here crying my eyes out. Just absolute perfection from Karla. This is my first ♾️ ⭐️ read of the year. I love them so, so much. 😭
I’ve read two books by Karla Sorensen prior to this, Lessons in Heartbreak and Single Dad Dilemma, the latter of which I highly recommend reading to get the full effect of this story. I had a great time reading both books, so I had high hopes that How Not to Fall in Love would hit just the same. Despite a rocky start (which I kind of anticipated given Archer’s character in SDD), it ultimately did.
Things I Loved: 🐶 Remi - I saw so much of myself in her with the people-pleasing, love of animals, and singular drive to take care of others. I further enjoyed her putting Archer in his place on multiple occasions. She’s also a crier and same. 🏈 Archer - Not a great start for me, but the growth and finish were 💯. Once we learn the truth of the situation, in addition to his backstory, I just wanted to hug him. You’re quite endearing when you linger, buddy. 🗣️ The Banter - Quips, wit, and sass are foreplay for these two, and the tension it built was thick. 💘 The Romance - The understandings they come to upon realizing how similar they actually are, the strong connection they form outside of sexual compatibility, and the support and protection that blooms between Remi and Archer, despite their early hiccups, was lovely to experience. Number 8 for the win. 👨🏽 Having Coach King from SDD back! A true mentor and the kind of person you want in your corner. 🏠 Remi’s grandpa, Harold, and son, Gavin - Such solid additions to the story, adding humor, emotion (especially Gavin with that jersey), and depth to both the plot and Remi’s character. 🚙 Archer’s sister, Analise - I adored her relationship with Archer. Her messing with him, calling him out in the way only a sibling can, their fierce protection of one another, and their playfulness together softened me up to Archer a great deal. 🏟️ The supporting football player characters - Okay, but, they had me literally laughing out loud. 🐕 The Shelter - Those dang dogs got me good. 🥹 The Epilogue and HEA - In true Remi fashion, I cried.
Things I Struggled With: 🙅🏻♀️ The first quarter - I had a rough start with Archer’s version of “pulling a girl’s ponytail because you like her” energy. Though he quickly saw the error of his ways and course corrected, as well as this being on-brand behavior for him given who he was in SDD, it still bugged me. 🧀 Some cheesiness - There were a couple corny moments I could’ve done without, but they didn’t make the story any less entertaining.

“I don’t need to kiss you to know. You and me, it would be magic.”
How Not To Fall In Love is the kind of story that grabs your heart from page one and refuses to let go. It’s emotional, angsty, and packed with the kind of slow burn tension that makes you feel every high and low right along with the characters.
“In every metric that matters, you’re a better person than me. You burn so bright, and I’m not even sure you realize how powerful it is, being around the kind of light you generate.”
Archer was already intriguing when we met him in the previous book, but this story peels back every layer of that cocky, “nothing gets to me” façade. What’s underneath is a man carrying far more hurt—and far more heart—than anyone realized. Watching him finally let himself be vulnerable, finally allow himself to want something real, is downright swoonworthy. His emotional growth is one of the most satisfying arcs I’ve read in a while.
“Loving him wasn’t an act of rebellion or a selfish impulse to feed a fix. It was an acknowledgement that sometimes the universe gifted us the perfect person in the most imperfect way.”
Remi, a hardworking single mom who pours into everyone but herself, is his perfect match in all the messy, complicated ways. She and Archer clash constantly, but he also awakens feelings she’s spent years avoiding. Her fear, her longing, her uncertainty—they all feel so real. She’s torn between protecting her heart and finally choosing something that might actually make her happy.
“When I told you it shouldn’t be this hard, I was wrong. Fighting myself was hard. Falling in love with you was easy. So easy, it happened before I could even put a name to it.”
Their chemistry simmers from the start, but this is a true slow burn—full of snarky banter, emotional honesty, and that delicious push pull that keeps you hooked. And the audio? Stephen Dexter and CJ Bloom elevate the entire experience. They bring such raw emotion to the heavy moments that I genuinely felt my heart being tugged in every direction.
“I had a feeling that I’d fall in love with Archer Evans a million times for a million different reasons before my life was over.”
If you want a romance that will make you laugh, ache, swoon, and feel absolutely everything, How Not To Fall In Love delivers in every way. It’s an emotional delight.
I couldn't help but fall in love with How Not to Fall in Love! I was completely captivate from word one as Archer and Remi's beautiful story charmed me, made me laugh and cry, and also swoon, as my heart melted for their little family. Remi is a single mom who puts everyone's happiness ahead of her own. Archer is a professional quarterback who self sabotages everything good in his life, except for his sister, Analise, who he is very protective of. That is until he meets Remi, and she turns his world upside down. Their first meeting was a very brief, passionate encounter, until Remi suddenly flees. Then, after an accident, Archer is required to do community service at the dog rescue where Remi works. Archer is happy to see her again, but Remi, not so much. She unknowingly assumes the worst about him, making her keep her distance to protect her son, Gavin, and herself. But Archer wants to be a better man and to be worthy of Remi and Gavin, so he is determined to work hard to win her over. Remi begins to see the heart of gold that Archer keeps hidden, making her fall for him. But when the complications of his life causes issues for her and Gavin, will she walk away, or is she brave enough to fight for them? I really fell hard for Archer and Remi. They were so good for each other, helping each other open their hearts to grow, and heal and love, and their chemistry was explosive! I love the way that Sorensen takes her time developing Archer and Remi and their complex relationship, making their growth, and love feel solid, authentic and unbreakable. She expertly weaves a multilayered tale that is heartfelt, sizzling and absolutely flawless! I also loved Analise, Gavin, and all their family and friends, who were all so loving, and supportive, and added so much fun and heart to this story! I loved and completely devoured this beautiful, heartfelt, hilarious, and sizzling romance!
Karla Sorensen has a real talent for taking seemingly unlikeable characters and transforming them into ones you can’t help but root for. By the end of her books, those same characters often become your favorites, and this story is no exception. Here, our (initially) hard-to-like character is a gruff, abrasive MMC, a football player whose life has been derailed by a series of circumstances, many of which were beyond his control. After a run-in with the law leads to mandated community service at a local animal rescue, following an incident where he damages part of their property, he’s given a chance at redemption in more ways than one.
The FMC is a single mother who is vying to take over the animal rescue while also caring for her young son and her aging grandfather. At first glance, her life feels somewhat small and routine. She’s responsible and dependable, but perhaps a little too contained. In many ways, she comes across as lacking excitement or personal fulfillment, which is exactly what makes her initial encounter with the MMC so impactful. Through their growing connection, she begins to open herself up to help, to change, and to the possibility of a fuller life beyond her responsibilities.
Just when you think you have the story figured out, Sorensen introduces a plot twist that shifts your understanding of key events and characters. Suddenly, details you thought were clear are called into question, adding depth and tension to the narrative. This twist not only keeps the story engaging but also reinforces the emotional stakes, making the characters’ journeys feel even more meaningful.
Overall, this is another strong story from Karla Sorensen. Her ability to craft layered characters, blend emotional growth with romance, and keep readers invested from start to finish is what continues to draw me back to her work. I’m always eager to see what she’ll write next, and if this book is any indication, there are plenty more compelling stories still to come. He fell first. She hates him. Single mom. Slow burn.
If Karla writes it, I will read it. Thank you, NetGalley, and Montlake for the ARC.
Remi, a single mom of a football-loving 10-year-old, is pressured to go to a club by her best friend. While a little tipsy, she ends up hooking up on the dance floor. When reality hits, she flees.
Her son, a massive fan of Archer, is devastated when he learns about the DUI. He shows Remi the article, and it clicks for her—the stranger at the club was Archer.
Archer, an NFL player, has been injured and seems to be making poor decisions, including a DUI (kind of). His punishment is 50 hours of community service at the animal shelter he hit. This is where he and Remi finally see each other after the club. Remi is the interim director and Archer’s new boss.
Remi was quick to judge Archer and made a lot of assumptions about him from the start. Archer had it bad from the moment he met her at the club. Both of them were guarded and had built walls due to trust issues. When Archer confided in Remi about his little secret, those walls slowly crumbled.
I devoured this book! The chemistry between the two main characters was incredible. There was banter, tension, spice, tears, laughs, and heart. He washed and dried her hair.😩
The relationships between Gavin and Archer, and Analise and Archer, Remi and Analise were just so sweet. And of course, there’s Pops ❤️
“Sometimes the universe gifted us the perfect person in the most imperfect way.”
OMG this book was an absolutely amazing read. Our grumpy MMC Archer has found himself in some legal trouble after a night out on the town where he was distracted after meeting a woman at the bar that he couldn’t stop thinking about. What happens when he shows up to his first day of community service and the one who can make his life a living hell is the girl from the bar?
This book had everything. “A single mom who works to hard, who loves her kid and never stops, with gentle hands and the heart of a fighter, she’s a survivor.” - Survivor by Reba McIntire, this is the perfect song to describe this book and the way our characters love story came to be.
The way this book had so many plot twists that I genuinely didn’t see coming that made me just love our main guy Archer the most. He genuinely is the best big brother who will let know one come in between him and his sister. Hes the ultimate protector and while he’s not perfect, he’s trying and you could really feel that throughout the book.
And it wouldn’t be a Karla Sorensen review if I did not mention our shared love for Michigan football. A laugh out loud moment I had was when one of the characters said something to a side one and he just so happened to be (out of any school she choose) a rookie drafted out of Michigan. (Karla, if you are reading this plead let me know which player inspired this character) I love it and I hope this never changes.
This book releases April 14th! Thank you so much to NetGalley for the Arc in exchange for an honest review!
5 stars no notes. Let me just state for the record that I did not want this book to end. I'd be perfectly happy reading numerous books about Remi, Archer, Gavin, Pops, Analise and the Buffalo Storm crew. The banter was bantering, the chemistry between Remi and Archer was absolutely off the charts. I was laughing/crying/swooning and marveling at how Sorensen crafts characters with such strength and vulnerability. I think we are starved for men who either come to realize their faults or are pointed out to them and actually do the work to do better. Archer was hard to resist from the first page as a reader but also a tough nut to crack... but not as tough as Remi. Whooooo boy, there were times where I was frustrated with her but once she realized where her issues stemmed from, the light bulb went off...the horse was out of the barn.... well you get the picture. And the spice...once we got there... it was incendiary. Goodness gracious. Archer was down bad once he gave into how he felt about Remi and that yearning was DELICIOUS. Karla Sorensen is one of my all time favorite authors and How Not to Fall in Love will certainly make you fall in love with her and her writing. One more thing: Please, please, please let there be more books in this series/world.
Thank you to Karla Sorensen, Montlake, and Netgalley for the pleasure of reading a review copy.
•My Thoughts• Another emotional and swoony read from Karla full of tension and redemption. I love her story telling and the combination of tortured bad boy and single mom in this one was so good. Archer’s backstory and struggle to change the pattern of his upbringing was heart achingly beautiful. I loved watching him grow, especially in his dynamics with his team. Remi was so easy to root for and I loved her heart for her people, especially her son and grandfather (Pops was seriously the best). The chemistry between our main characters was instant but circumstances and maturity slowed down their connection in a way that worked for me. Karla is magic in the way she evokes emotion - you can add this book to the tiny list of books that made me cry over a dog (I’m not an animal person so this is big AND another on this tiny list is also by Karla!). All of the relationships had their beautiful moments and I just ate this up. Highly recommend.
🎧Narration Notes Dual Narration: CJ Bloom and Stephen Dexter
4/5🎙️ The narration was enjoyable and I liked their performance. There were a few scenes where I felt like the emotion of the scene wasn’t completely captured but that might have been because I mostly eyeballed and didn’t fully settle into them as the characters.
Thank you to Montlake Publishing and Brilliance Audio for the early copies of the ebook and audiobook. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
🏈 Football player MMC 💗 Single mom FMC 🏈 Forced proximity 💗 Found family 🏈 He falls first 💗 Dating rules
"And more than anything, I wanted a chance. But right now, it wasn't about me, because what I wanted was more than she was ready for."
What do you get when you mix a bad boy quarterback and a headstrong single mom? Lots and lots of sparks and tension and I loved every minute of it!
A chance meeting brings Archer and Remi together but a heavy dose of reality interrupts their night. A cruel twist of fate brings them back together and now that single night is so far in the rearview mirror.
I loved all of the characters so much. Not just Remi and Archer but Analise, Archer's sister; Gavin, Remi's son; Pops, Remi's grandpa; Ness, Remi's quirky best friend; and all of Archer's teammates. Everyone had a place in this book and it just reinforced the found family trope. I sincerely hope this book turns into a series because I want more!
I also really enjoyed the character development, especially for Archer. I especially enjoyed his interactions with Remi's son and grandpa. Those interactions were so endearing and well-written.
This was my first Karla Sorenson book but it won't be my last! I'm excited to read her backlog!
Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for the advanced reader copy.
This book made me so happy, it also made cry. I was not expecting to cry over a grumpy quarterback and a single mom! Archer and Remi’s story was so good and I am so happy they got their hard won HEA because these two fought hard for it. Both coming from pasts they are trying to outrun.
Archer was such a grump and I was laughing so hard about it. But the reason behind it made me cry at the same time. My first thought of Remi was that she was so dramatic and I loved it so much. Their meet cute was hot from the beginning. But the second time, not so much. The way these two had such an instant connection and then going into the heavy stuff, made me take a second. Add in Gavin, Remi’s son, and I was bawling. This book is about not letting your past dictate your future. It’s about embracing what’s in front of you and not running away. It’s about standing up to those that don’t ever want to see you happy.
Pops was by far the best character, with his one liners and his words of wisdom. Gavin stole my heart though. For being so young, he was so straight forward and wise beyond his years. I also loved getting glimpses of the football team and Coach King with Lily.
Thank you to Karla Sorensen for this ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Tropes: ✨Bad boy quarterback x single mom ✨Football romance ✨Forced proximity ✨He falls first ✨Found family
Karla Sorensen has a gift for creating characters who feel like real people, and Remi is an easy one to root for. A people-pleasing single mom juggling more than anyone should, she is deeply relatable and surrounded by friends and family who bring warmth to every scene.
The animal shelter setting is one of my favorite things about this book. The dogs are an absolute delight and play a natural role in bringing Remi and Archer together. Bandit, the dog Archer finds, is particularly memorable and closely tied to his growth as a character.
Archer took some time to win me over. His past is revealed in a way that had him coming across as a complete jerk for longer than I wanted. What changed things for me was his relationship with his sister, Analise, especially the way he steps in and gets her out from under their father’s control. That protective side was the first glimpse of who he really is. By the end, I believed in him and in what he and Remi built together.
My main wish is that we had gotten more time in a few key areas—more romantic moments, more football, and more of the team dynamic. The prologue sets a tone that takes a while to circle back to.
I’m a big fan of Karla Sorensen, and this one left me hopeful we’ll see more of the teammates introduced along the way.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC.
“Tell me all your flaws, and I’ll decide if they’re deal breaker. Maybe I have a list of own.”
How Not to Fall in Love was a great romance!! Single mom Remi was ready for a night out with her best friend. She ended up next to a grump who liked her rambling. However Remi quickly realized she wasn’t built for a hook up so bolted. A month later though, that hook up ended up at her job.
“On the to do list surrounding hot, pompous football players currently infiltrating my life, he was definitely in the top spot.”
Archer had the reputation of the bad boy of the NFL. As we got to know him it was clear he was misunderstood and he just let people have their own opinions. But when it came to Remi and her son , he cared about what they thought and he was determined to show them he is a good man.
“The way I wanted Remi Sinclair defied every law of logic in existence. And if she allowed me to stay in her orbit much longer, I’d fall in love with her.”
I loved these two so much. They were just what the other needed and I loved getting to know Archer’s teammates because I am hoping we get the rookie’s story one day, he was adorable !
🔥: “Let me hear you, firefly. Don’t keep those sounds to yourself. They’re mine.”
I really enjoyed this and honestly, she just always delivers for me. The single mom/playboy dynamic is one of my favorite tropes, and this one was so cute. I loved watching Archer slowly win Remi over, especially with all the tension between them.
Remi did frustrate me at times because she kept everything so locked down, but at the same time, I totally understood why. She’s been through a lot and is trying to protect herself and her son, so it made sense even if it slowed things down. Archer, on the other hand, was such a softie underneath that bad boy exterior, and I loved seeing those layers come out. My favorite part is him just working really hard to show her that he is worthy of a chance.
Their meet cute was adorable, and the chemistry between them felt really natural. I do wish the story had gone a bit deeper emotionally because it stayed a little more surface level than I personally like, but overall, it was still a really enjoyable read and a good time. I am always looking forward to the next book from Karla!
Thank you to NetGalley, Karla Sorensen, and Montlake for the eARC of this book.
🐾Single mom Remi works at an animal shelter, takes care of her ten year old son Gavin and her beloved grandfather Pops. She’s stayed away from relationships for so long, not wanting to bring anyone into Gavin’s life that’s not going to be there for the long term.
🐾Professional football player Asher’s default setting is surly, although his love for his much younger sister shines through. When he’s convicted of a DUI, he’s sentenced to community service in Remi’s animal shelter.
✏️Asher’s one of the characters in Karla Sorensen’s recent Single Dad Dilemma, where he’s one of the players being coached. This story had me hooked. Remi’s circumstances were very relatable, and her reluctance to get involved with Asher despite the attraction is realistic. The two show their feelings as the layers get peeled off and the blast when they are finally able to be together is explosive. I adore Karla Sorensen’s writing, this latest is a worthy addition.

Karla Sorensen has become an auto-buy author for me. Is there a book of hers I don’t like? No. Is How Not To Fall in Love my new favourite of hers? Yes. I’m even going to go out on a limb here and say it may be in my Top Ten Reads of the Year list. This was kind of my idea of a perfect romance book. It was heartfelt and emotional, had excellent character growth, main and side characters that were compelling, fun, and witty, a delicious slow burn, and includes my personal favourite trope- single parent with a great support system around her.
Points that just hit perfectly all around- ARCHER. Wow. He had excellent character growth, was complex, learned from his mistakes, and was made it his job to make Remi and Gavin happy. The grandpa was precious, Remi was such a good human, Ness was hilarious, and Archer’s young teammate was adorable (I’d totally read a teammate’s little sister romance with him and Archer’s sister if she is aged up a bit!).
I’ll be thinking of this one for a while and it’s for sure one I’ll reread.
Thank you to Karla Sorensen, and Montlake for an advanced copy of this book for review.
Hemi is a single mom that needs one night out, a night where she acts not like herself at all, like dance in a risqué way with a stranger in the club.
But the stranger doesn't stay stranger for long, especially since Archer ends up being an NFL player that caused an accident in the animal shelter that she manages and now he has to volunteer there under court order to make up for it.
Archer is such a jerk at first he really had to work in order to make up for that, he was his own worst enemy but he is doing the work and he really came out stronger especially once he decided to work through some of his personal demons.
Remi is trying her best, her plate is so full and doesn't have any room left for anything less than what is truly important but the more Archer shows the more she sees the man he is behind his facade and I love that for them!
Their romance was a sloooow burn, and a delicious one at that, the ending was truly worth the wait.
I got to listen to the audiobook which made the experience even more enjoyable. I could listen Stephen Dexter and C J Bloom all day.
* I received an ARC and this is my honest opinion.
I was really gripped by the prologue of this story and the chemistry between the 2 main characters in it- pro football player Archer and animal rescue worker Remi. The first few chapters also kept my interest but towards the middle of the book I found myself wondering where that initial spark and chemistry had gone, and felt the story dragged a bit at times.
Remi is a single mom, carer and hard worker. She meets Archer on a rare night out and feels an instant connection with him but their second meeting is far more hostile.
Archer has not had an easy past, but is fiercely protective of his younger sister and I loved seeing that part of his character.
Overall this was an easy read but I wanted more- I needed more showing of their developing feelings rather than just telling the reader, so it would have been more believable. I wish the underlying chemistry from the prologue had carried through a little more. I really enjoyed seeing the rest of Archer’s team and the found family aspect of this story, as well as coach king and his wife!
"I'd never felt like this. Walking around like a fucking zombie, holding on to an aching need to see her. Be around her. Do whatever would make her smile."
After getting a DUI, Archer is required to do community service at the pet shelter he partially destroyed. And of course, who should be running the shelter other than the woman he had a one night stand with—the one he can't seem to forget?
Tropes: – Single mom – Sports romance (football) – Found family – Forced proximity – Bad boy/tough girl – He falls first + boy obsessed
I had the pleasure of listening to this book and oh my goodness I had the time of my life!!! Archer is the very definition of DOWN BAD and it was so cute and wholesome. Under his very bad boy exterior he’s such a secret softie and my heart honestly bled for him. Talk about the perfect redemption. I also loved Remi and her backbone and how kind she is with an equally big heart. Her family was also so sweet and so supportive, and I adored them.
This story was filled with good vibes, pining and puppies and I cannot recommend it enough. Thank you Karla Sorensen for the ALC!!
This book has a prologue that reached out and grabbed right on to my attention. It was sexy, it got me immediately interested in the main characters and their back stories, and it made me want to keep flipping pages. Beyond that, this book was a slow burn full of pining and questions about how this could ever work between them. By the end it was a little drawn out for my taste, but I enjoyed reading the book regardless. There are a lot of fun and compelling dynamics throughout, especially with family members and teammates. I would say it was ‘sport romance lite’ in that we spent much more time at Remi’s job, but not in any sort of way that had me missing football. Remi’s job was the more interesting one, and the benefits of ‘sport’ (muscles, athleticism, funny teammates, caring coaches) were all present.
I Thought this was a fun, quick read. It was the first I’ve read of Karla Sorensen’s books, and I would pick up another if the description matched my reading mood of the moment.
Normally I like to read a book before I listen to it but when I had the opportunity to choose either with this ARC I decided to listen first. And I’m SO GLAD I did! There is no way I could have heard this better in my head than the performance by Stephen Dexter and CJ Bloom. They brought Archer and Remi to life in top notch fashion!
Now, let’s talk about the story. We met Archer in Karla’s last book and he was a villain right off the bat. How Not to Fall In Love was definitely his redemption story. He goes from a sour face grumping a bar to hot mess in a shelter, to learning there is so much more to his story. Remi is kind of along for the ride, albeit reluctantly, because she’s also her own hot mess. They eventually figure out their crap and have a tearful HEA. Also, at the risk of any spoilers, I wouldn’t be doing this review any kind of justice if I didn’t point out how emotionally epic the “breakup” scene was. Definitely one of the best written “hard” scenes I’ve read in awhile. So, all in all, it’s another 5 star read and listen from Karla Sorensen!
