I'm a bit of a know-it-all, so when my son asked me a question about axolotls, I was frustrated to realize I didn't have the answer! Looking for one, this book's title definitely caught my attention. Luckily, the rest of it was as fun and cute as its title -- and it was informative, too.
Not only is this book full of fascinating facts about axolotls that genuinely surprised me and my son; it's also presented in an easy to read and very amusing way. For example, the axolotl in the story gives false facts about itself, only for the Know It Owl to swoop in with the right information. The author kept things interesting in a number of other ways, too. There are moments along the way where you (and/or the kid you might be reading this with) can do fun activities, including a maze and a find-it game. There's even a guide for how to draw an axolotl at the end.
And so, not only do you get a lot of facts about these fascinating and cute creatures, but the information is given in a clear, fun way that doesn't feel taxing or dull.
My son is in 5th grade and I was worried that this book might be too young for him, but we both found it really entertaining, and the facts were complex enough not to seem patronizing. I could definitely see younger kids liking this book, as well, though.
Overall, this is a really fun and informative introduction to axolotls -- and bonus for sharing a message of conservation.
Bonus points, as well, for the charming illustrations, by Paula Piechna. So many children's books published today look the same, with a sort of AI-generated or 3-D animation look that's totally devoid of charm and individualism. The illustrations here are hand-drawn and full of personality and visual appeal.
Know It Owl is back and this time he is going head to head with the Axolotl. While the Axolotl is iffy on some of it's facts, the wise Owl helps offer insight into the mysterious creature.
One of my favorite series for kids. Interactive and I learned quite a bit about this creature. Definitely a series children will love.
I thought this book was so great! It was cute and colorful! Informative but fun. The pictures was so pretty. My son also really enjoyed it at 10. I believe its a good choice for any age. Highly recommend The Know it Owl series!

What makes a book both fun and educational is when it invites children to laugh while learning—and that’s exactly what The Know It Owl and the Axolotl does. In this playful story, Owl takes on the role of a teacher, gently correcting the silly claims made by his enthusiastic axolotl friend. The result is a lively back-and-forth that feels like a game while introducing young readers to fascinating animal facts.
The strength of the book lies in its rhythm: Axolotl’s wild declarations set up a moment of suspense—“Could that be true?”—before Owl swoops in with the real story. It’s a pattern children love to join in on, making this book ideal for interactive read-alouds at home or in the classroom. Instead of feeling like a science lesson, the story captures the energy of a conversation between two very different personalities, one grounded and one delightfully imaginative.
Paula Piechna’s artwork adds to the fun, with bright, expressive characters and visual details that keep eyes darting across the page. Owl’s calm wisdom and Axolotl’s wide-eyed mischief are both endearing, and the illustrations echo the humor while still highlighting the factual details that make the story stick.
At its heart, The Know It Owl and the Axolotl is about the joy of curiosity. It shows children that questions—even silly ones—are the first step to learning. It’s a book that celebrates both imagination and truth, reminding us that knowledge grows best when paired with wonder.
The Know It Owl and the Axolotl written by Terri Sabol and Illustrated by Paula Piechna is such a cute read. The illustrations are eye-catching, and the use of colors throughout the book makes it exciting to read. The book follows an axolotl and an owl on a journey to learn all about axolotls. The axolotl will state interesting facts that are not true about itself, and then the owl will speak up and tell the truth about the axolotl. The facts shared about the axolotl help the children who read this book to learn so much about this cute little water creature. The illustrations really add to the facts that are being learned. The book starts with a page that shows children how to measure the axolotl using colored pencils, which they all have access to in school. Then, on a few pages in the book, it shows how many colored pencils it takes to measure certain things. The book also contains a few activities that children can do, which reinforce what they are learning about the axolotl. The book ends with a page showing on a world map where the axolotl lives and how endangered it is. The very last page of the book shows the steps to draw an axolotl. This is a cute read for any children, or even adults, who want to learn more about axolotls. This is a definite addition to any child's or school’s library.
The Know It Owl and the Axolotl is a children’s book in the “Know It Owl” series. It follows Owl — a self-appointed expert with a penchant for correcting misinformation — as he visits and interacts with an axolotl. Through their dialogue, the story gently debunks misconceptions about the axolotl and offers real, science-based facts, interwoven with humour and playful conflict. One of the book’s strongest assets is how it presents accurate biological or zoological facts in a fun, engaging way. The “Know It Owl” character acts as a kind of skeptical teacher, asking questions, correcting errors, and guiding the reader to true knowledge. This approach helps young readers learn without feeling lectured. Illustrations are colourful and rich in detail, making the otherwise somewhat obscure creature of the axolotl more visually appealing and accessible to young readers The Know It Owl and the Axolotl is a charming children’s book that balances humour with education. It introduces a somewhat exotic creature in a way that feels accessible and playful, while not skimping on scientific accuracy.
My kids and I have loved every single book in The Know It Owl Series so far, but this one is now our favorite! We love axolotls and have several axolotl decorations around the house. Just like the other books in the series, this one was also both educational and fun. The dialogue is playful and interactive, which is perfect for getting kids involved. I love how the book invites them to take on roles, whether it’s Owl or the eager animals, making reading feel more like a conversation than just a story. Axolotl has some pretty funny but incorrect ideas about the world. The playful exchanges between them had me smiling, and the kiddos giggling at Owl’s sarcastic remarks like “Axolotl nonsense!” I can’t forget to mention the illustrations! They are gorgeous, vibrant images that help bring each animal’s personality to life. This is a book that will entertain and teach at the same time, just like the rest of the series. Perfect for curious little minds!
The Know It Owl and the Axolotl is such a fun and clever addition to Terri Sabol’s Know It Owl series. I’ve always loved stories that sneak in a little learning alongside the entertainment, and this one does it beautifully. The pairing of Owl and Axolotl is adorable. Owl with its “know-it-all” wisdom and Axolotl with its bubbly personality and quirky misconceptions. The repeated phrase “Axolotl nonsense” made me smile every time, and the kids giggled and repeated it. As someone who enjoys books that mix curiosity, learning, and storytelling, this one really hit the sweet spot. It’s not just a “read once” book. it’s one kids will want to revisit, and it could even be a great springboard for classroom activities or at-home learning moments. I’d recommend it to families who love educational picture books with a sense of humor, or to anyone with an animal-loving kid who’s fascinated by unusual creatures. Owl might be the “know-it-all,” but Axolotl definitely steals the show.
The Know It Owl and the Axolotl is the fifth book in The Know It Owl series by Terri Sabol. It is a cute children’s book with an educational component as the story educates us about Axolotls- enlightening us with ‘Axolotl facts’ as well as providing some fun ‘activities’. The story is accompanied by some wonderful, colourful, and interesting illustrations which really help to bring everything to life. As expected from Ms. Sabol, this is quite a delightful children’s story, and sets the series off to a great start, learning about the various animals with the Know-It-All Owl. The Series Consists of: -The Know It All Owl (Book #1) -The Know It All Owl and the Otter (Book #2) -The Know It All Owl and the Giraffe (Book #3) -The Know It All Owl and the Kangaroo (Book #4) -The Know It Owl and the Axolotl (Book #5) Happy Reading…
The Know It Owl and the Axolotl is the fifth book in The Know It Owl series. It is a children's educational picture book aimed at sparking curiosity and appreciation for wildlife in young readers. The wise and witty Owl corrects misconceptions about animals, this time focusing on the axolotl. Owl humorously debunks false facts with the phrase “Axolotl nonsense,” then shares accurate information. This book blends humor, education, and interactive elements like mazes, seek-and-find games, and a drawing guide. It features vibrant, hand-drawn illustrations full of charm and personality which makes it visually engaging and is designed to captivate children’s imaginations. This book is great for both parents and educators due to its engaging format, educational value, humor, and appeal across different age groups.
Once again, I delved into the captivating and enlightening world of The Know It Owl Series. This time, our clever owl is unraveling the mysteries of the rare Axolotl. With a plethora of misconceptions to dispel, Owl is on a mission to educate the young Axolotl.
As with the other books, the bright colors and added games will keep young readers engaged. In addition, I learned some facts myself that I didn’t know. For instance, they have both gills and lungs, and they lack vocal cords, so they don’t produce sounds like many other amphibians. These were just a couple of facts that I learned. Unfortunately, they are also critically endangered, which is a stark reminder of the importance of conservation efforts.
Just like the other books in the series, this one would make a great addition to a child’s library. Don't miss the chance to introduce your child to the fascinating world of The Know It Owl Series.
So adorable! Love how you can measure things in the book with a colored pencil (marked as you read) to help kiddos understand the actual size as you are talking about it (like the actual size of an axolotl). Fun way to teach kids about axolotls with all the cool facts about them throughout the whole story. For instance, the fact that they regrow body parts! Super neat! It’s got quite a bit of words so not so good for keeping little kids attention but I know a few kids that would love to read this to learn (ages 8&9) and it’ll still be fun to look at and read as much as the tiny kiddos will allow or make up your own story with the pictures (which I sometimes do). And at the end, it shows how you can draw an Axolotl, too!
The Know It Owl and the Axolotl by Terri Sabol. This is the best series for kids about all different kinds of animals. The Know It Owl has to tell everyone all about each of the animals and in this one its all about the Axolotl. I even learned about the Axolotl because I wasn't quite sure about it. Owl is never afraid to correct someone when they are telling facts but the Owl knows it all. The illustrations are so fun and neat and in this one you can even measure things with a pencil to see how big they actually are. This is in my 1 year old grandsons library and I can't wait to share them all with him. These would make a great gift for any child in your life and even pre k teachers! The knowledge you learn and the fun way about it is the best I've seen in kids books.
The Know It Owl and the Axolotl by Terri Sabol was such a delight to read—I found myself smiling the whole way through. I especially loved Owl’s cheeky “Axolotl nonsense” line, which made me laugh out loud and reminded me of the silly things kids say when they’re learning new facts. The interactive dialogue really pulled me in, and I could easily imagine reading this aloud with kids, letting them take turns being the wise Owl or the curious Axolotl. The illustrations are so bright and playful that I caught myself lingering on the pages just to soak in the details. What I appreciated most is how the book sneaks in real knowledge while keeping the story fun and lighthearted.
Excellent read! I know that Axolotls are very popular right now due to pop culture, so finding out all everything about them make them so much more interesting than just how cute their appearance is. I hate seeing that certain animals are going instinct, I hope with books like this everyone can become educated and learn to leave animals in their habitats so they can live in peace and grow in numbers. As always in the Know It Owl book series, the search and find and maze pages are fun and interactive for kids. I have learned so much through this children’s book about axolotls that I never knew.
Know It Owl and Axolotl by Terri Sabol 5-Star Review Terri Sabol has done it again with this version of Know It Owl. The facts and descriptions in this book are easy to read and understand. There are several facts that I didn’t know. Did you know that Axolotyl get their name from the Aztecs and that they are originally from Mexico, not Spain? And what happens when they lose a limb? The nonsense things that Axolotl says, are hilarious and the correct information is entertaining while gaining knowledge. I love this series and have actually read all of them so far to my grandchildren and some of my students. Great story and amazing creativity!
I absolutely love this series of books! Sabol makes them funny yet educational. I love the activities throughout the books that the kiddos can do like the mazes, finding the creatures, and so much more. This installment focuses on the axolotl. I adore how Sabol keeps the information age-appropriate but also adds to the story line and banter between the animals. There are also pockets of more in-depth information for your older readers and parents. I can't say enough about these books! Definitely add them to your shelves if you have animal lovers in your home!
The Know It Owl does it again in this delightful book that teaches us about the Axolotl. We love Owl with his no-nonsense approach to correcting misconceptions about animals. The cute book cover indicates that fun learning is about to begin. I smiled my way through this book as I learned about the amazing axolotl for the first time. Kids will love learning more and will be actively engaged through hands-on activities, such as a maze and a seek-and-find page. They will even learn how to draw an axolotl!
This book is part of a series that I have enjoyed. The colorful pages that will pull your child into the story and keep them asking questions. This book is no different. Owl is back with another adventure and this time he visits with Axoloti. I enjoy Owl and his fun way of correcting those that he meets of the misconceptions about animals. This is a fun story that pulls education into the story in a way that is easy to learn. This is a great children’s book that any child would enjoy reading. I highly recommend this book.
This book is part of a series, but can definitely be read as a stand-alone. This book is an adorable explanation of what an axolotl is...and isn't, as told by an owl who knows everything. The information was fun and interesting, especially if you already like this little amphibians. Even as an adult, I learned something from this book! The illustrations are bright and colorful, and theres even a couple of games to keep young children engaged. I would recommend this book for anyone who has or cares for young children, especially if they like axolotls!
The Know it Owl and the Axolotl is part of the Know It Owl series. I love these books because they are fun but very educational. I learned so much from this book and didn’t realize how freaking cool these animals are. They have gills AND lungs AND can breathe through their skin. They almost seem to fail at evolution- being an amphibian but following its own set of rules. In addition to learning a lot about this unique animal, the book is filled with fun games like a maze and drawing tutorial. These books would be great to have in elementary class libraries.
I just love this series! It has so many interesting facts beautifully woven into a story with vibrant illustrations that keep little ones interested. There are many interesting facts about the Axolotl in this short story. Terri even weaves some games into the story and more facts about the Axolotl at the end. If you have little ones who are curious in nature, this book and the entire series are worth reading to them. (Even the adults may learn a thing or two, I have!) Hands down recommend for children eight and under.
This series is one that, ad a family we have become completely obsessed with. Each new book we read brings a whole new level of entertainment and joy. As soon as we saw this book we had to read it straight away. My daughter has recently become familiar with Axolotls, so she could not wait to dive into this book. This book is engaging and captivating and is a great way to educate children on different animals. We always learn something from this books whilst still finding them to be fun. This book is a great addition to the series and has become one of our favourites.
I Loved this book! Owl is so cute, little bit of sass and alot of knowledge! The phrases used as a response to Axolotl are fun and the perfect response!
I loved all the information and learned alot I did not know. I love that the author put such consideration into the research, providing information that includes if they make good pets, the animals level of being endangered amd things not known about these wonderful animals.
This is a great story and the style is awesome! Our kids will love it and I am excited to read another!
I have been loving all these books about getting to know everything about all the animals in each one. This one is all about Axolotls and all the interesting facts and info about them. All these books have a know-it-all owl who narrates everything thou out the book. The book is well illustrated and my kids loved everything about these books and how well they are put together. The knowledge put towards these are amazing and great to learn everything about them that you need too. These was super engaging for my kids and they can’t get enough of learning about all these wonderful animals.
Wonderful lesson in getting to know the Axolotl. This is for an advanced reader or for an adult to read to younger kids as some of the words and terms will be too difficult for young children to understand. The illustrations are fantastic, and the knowledge and facts are fascinating. I never knew these things and now understand more about this wonderful creature. This is the first book in this series that I have read but it will most definitely not be the last.
The Know It Owl is a pretty smart bird. In this story, he knows all about axolotls and isn't afraid to share it! This book, while a work of fiction, does have some interesting facts about axolotls. There are also a couple of Spanish words and a method of measuring in the book using colored pencils. These features allow for further teaching beyond the words of the page.
I love this series and look forward to reading more!
I’ve read and enjoyed many books by author Sabol. Her passion for nature and animals is evident in every book and this in no exception. Another well-done educational and humorous storyline with a creative invitation to draw at the end or the story.
I didn’t know anything about the axolotl (a.k.a. water dog) and learned with every page-turn. Highly recommended for any young readers ready who enjoys unique sea life.
