“Once you have answers, you will have to decide how far you’re willing to go and how much of yourself you’re willing to sacrifice for the truth.”

giphyee

I liked reuniting with Jack and Weatherby's family of secrets and lies. Lives are in greater peril; truth is in jeopardy, and past mistakes from their family's history begin to surface, startling and shaking the very foundation on which their family prided itself. Especially grateful that it had a bit of a rundown of the previous book's events before setting the stage in motion. 👍🏻

There were some clever word anagrams and interesting puzzles that I enjoyed cracking, while heightening the danger by putting the Liar Society in life-threatening situations of the power-hungry villains' harmful and frightening, if not ruthless machinations. 😥 It might have been a bit of a stretch for some - considering the extent of it - but I could roll with it.

“If you repeat a lie enough times, it becomes the truth. You are who you say you are.”

I'm not too sure how I feel about the blasé attitude in which actual murder is so easily dismissed, like it's something that comes with the territory of being a part of the Hunt family. 🤨 That was a bit disconcerting; not to mention how callous some parents actually were behaving, so blinded by their desire to win all the promised riches and glory. 😮‍💨

Weatherby's obvious crush on Prescott was cute; I just wish it didn't always appear when romance should be the last thing on her mind! 😆 Axton is a fresh voice on their team, and I'm glad that the cousin bond between Jack, his older brother Ford, and Weatherby is still at the heart of their desperation and determination not to repeat their fathers' doomed and damaged relationship. 🥺

“It scares me how close we can all be to going the wrong way.”

The mystery had my undivided attention, eager to see the final pieces solved. While one reveal was obvious from the get-go, the final twist totally caught me by surprise! 😯 But I didn't like that the author was actually aware that it had become too confusing with so many overlapping names being thrown around that the explanation literally had to be spelled out to help those who were getting lost in translation. 🙋🏻‍♀️😵‍💫

While I don't know how I feel about the "cliffhanger," the stakes have never been higher for how much everything could irrevocably change with one simple leak of the truth. And to see how the house of cards would topple if a match were to strike, setting their wealth and fame ablaze is what makes me await with anticipation the next book in this enjoyable middle grade series. 🎲

OH. OHOHO. THIS BOOK. THIS BOOK RIGHT HERE. takes a deep breath. Okay, so if you can't tell, this was absolute 🔥🔥🔥. Read it. Right now. No excuses.

You might say, "Oh, but I'm in the middle of this bigger, better, totally YA book—"
No. You're just gonna have to trust me on this one. I mean, trust before truth, truth before tradition...ykyk.
Alright, ya' still with me? Let's go into a deep dive. Warning: Ranting ahead. Major spoilers will be covered, but minor ones might not be. Also, a parents need to know will be at the bottom of the review.

I. Love. Weatherby. She has been a "star" (Skip reference) this whole series. I will say, she did get a little cringe, just a little cheesy on a few parts, especially in book 3, but nevertheless, this FMC is a lovely choice (coming from a girl around her age.) She did have less duo moments with her , Jack, but I appreciated how she was able to actually talk to Iris and Harper, and have normal girl conversations...no matter how...cringe...shudders. Okay, it wasn't that cringe, but, given how pretty much all MG books have some second hand embarrassment moments, this book lacks nothing. Anyway, back to this character.
Quoting Teddie,
"You gorgeous heiress."

Yes, Teddie Covington, you are correct in that statement. Weatherby was still that same smart, empathetic, not-quite-girlboss FMC, albeit a little trauma-scarred. I loved how she treated her friends throughout the whole book, upholding that "no secrets among friends" thing. I think this about wraps it up for Weatherby, now lets move on to itchy Saffron boy. (ykyk)

/

Haha. Jack, you had it baaaad in this book. Literally. As if his father being secretly evil, and certainly not who he says he is, he also had to be Yeesh. I feel bad for this boy. I also loved how Jack had like zero cringe lines or dialogue in this book. Like, I think he's moved on from the Iris thing, although it was never really a huge deal. I loved his bond with Pres(cott) and his brother, Ford. Not like I can actually relate to their bonds, as they are 13-15 year old boys, and I'm...not. But it was refreshing to see, even fictionally (rhymed, lol), boys talking about something other than brainrot or cusswords. The only thing that bothered me was this.

"Five quid, mate."

Mate?! Jack, Jack Hunt, you are not British. Please, do not ruin my mental image of this boy, and how he sounds in my head. (Thanks to this, like a British man. Not even a 13 year old) But that's just my opinion, I guess.

Moving on...

✩░▒▓▆▅▃▂▁𝐈𝐫𝐢𝐬 𝐑𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐠-𝐊𝐢𝐦▁▂▃▅▆▓▒░✩

I really like Iris. Literally nothing about her bothered me in this book, a stark contrast from book 2 when she hit that Roblox Brookhaven emote.

"Iris hesitates, digging her sneaker into the floor under her feet

😭😭😭Throwback to book 2.
Anyway, Iris in book 3 improved a lot more, she was smart and capable (quoting Jack from book 1). I feel really bad for her in sort of the same way as Jack. They both have bad parents. I was hoping we'd get to learn more about her mom in this book, but not yet. I will still hold out hope though. I loved how she came from a more mixed heritage than the others, not White, Asian and Jewish. It feels nice to see the change in backgrounds.

✩░▒▓▆▅▃▂▁𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬▁▂▃▅▆▓▒░✩

Okay. I hated Harper in books 1-2. First of all, in the beginning of book 1, she was a jerk to Weatherby, making her feel like she didn't belong. I mean, I get that she was just insecure, but have some empathy. Weatherby was in the same situation as her for a while. Oh, but then that changed, when we found out that Weatherby is with Jack. And all of a sudden, because she's rich and set for life, she doesn't deserve to have a father? Weatherby didn't choose to be rich or a What she would have rather chosen (I'm almost certain) is her dad to be involved in her life rather than endless spoils and riches. Harper framed it, in book 2, as wanting to keep her safe. And, I mean, I guess I could respect that part, but not the jealousy behind it.
That being said...
Harper changed a lot in book 3. And I mean in a really good way. She literally said sorry for how she acted in book 2, and I really appreciated that on Weatherby's behalf. I've now forgiven her, and mayyybe, just mayyyybe, she might have a place in my favorites one day.

✩░▒▓▆▅▃▂▁𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐭𝐭 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬▁▂▃▅▆▓▒░✩

Uhm. Errrrr.....
moment before explosion (okay, I was not trying to reference the literal ! But I guess it just appeared that way LOL!)
THIS character. This character developed so much from books 1 and 2. Now he's actually nice and everything, while still keeping his joking, teasing nature. I didn't necessarily appreciate how he suddenly developed in book 2, from being really rude to Weatherby, Harper and Iris, to being besties with all of them, but book 3 just made sense. I loved how he had duo moments with the main character, both of them, and I feel like he finally stopped being pushed off to the side as a character. He seriously had potential, and Ms. Gerber used it. (but where did his Boston accent go?! 😭)

"We need to be better," I whisper.
Prescott's mouth twitches. "We already are. We have you.""

Such a supportive friend. Okay, you may be thinking, "wHy arE yOu juSt FrIeNd-zOniNg hiM aNd WeaTheRbY???. Because I was more okay with this ship in book 2, now it sort of gets on my nerves. I get that the author is trying to be relatable...but I never once thought that someone was my "one true love." I also am mature enough to know (around Weatherby's age) that she was probably exaggerating, as kids do, or being delulu. (Nothing wrong with that, I have been delulu too, but it was never that serious) But I just kinda cringed at that a bit.
Anyway, Pres was a really good character, for sure my 4th fav (behind: 1-Weatherby, 2-Jack, 3-Iris), and overall, this was his best development and character book.
One last thing—
"I spot Pres first, towering over everyone in a hunter-green dinner jacket..."

Haha. Wow. "Towering over everyone." I am 5'3.5, which is actually quite tall for my age, and I don't tower over adults (there were adults at the party). This made me mad, because first we have Jack being 5'7, then we have Axton, described as tall, now we have Pres, "towering over everyone". Just putting it out there, not all boys are tall.

✩░▒▓▆▅▃▂▁𝐀𝐱𝐭𝐨𝐧▁▂▃▅▆▓▒░✩

I mean, he was okay. I feel like Axton's grief arc for should have been covered a lot more, because he sort of just forgot about her, his love for the game, I guess, distracting him. But that can only go on for so long before he feels emotionless. I mean, come on, just died. Other than this, there's not much to say about this character, other than the question: How does he know Skip?

✩░▒▓▆▅▃▂▁𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐇𝐮𝐧𝐭▁▂▃▅▆▓▒░✩

Okay, like Harper, I hated this dude in books 1 and 2, but in book 3, he was a way better character, albeit still a sort of minor one. I loved his big-brother dynamic with Jack, although I would have appreciated it more if he kept just a little bit of his beef with Pres. Not saying that's bad of the author, it's more of my hunger for drama.

I can't really say much about Teddie with covering the whole thing in spoilers, so I won't cover her for now, but I will say she made me soooo freaking mad; she's the new Harper.

😔✌️🥀romance😔✌️🥀 (these are the emojis I always put for romance, I'm not saying this one is exceptionally bad, just that I'm never the biggest fan of romance)

Weatherby and Pres — My opinion: ...very, very mixed feelings on this one. I could rant about it all day, so I'll just leave it at this. I was fine with it, even getting used to it, in book 2, but in book 3, I really kind of didn't like it. It got on my nerves a little.

Iris and Jack — My opinion: I was way more okay with this one. It was obviously always just a crush or whatever, a little cringe, but I for sure liked it more than Weatherby and Pres. I think Iris doesn't like him though, which honestly is totally okay, because my opinions aren't really strong.

Harper and Ford — My opinion: I was very surprised by this. And not in a good way. Gurl. Ford is 2 years older than you, please, Harper, like somebody different. Or, better yet, don't like someone.

Weatherby's mom and Skip — I just did this for no reason. GUYS IT'S A JOKE, THERE IS NO SHIP WITH THESE TWO. Maybe it wasn't that funny for me to joke like this.

Parents need to know

Language: None. There were three uses of The Lord's name in vain in book 2, but no cuss words or uses of God's name in vain in this book.

Violence: Character is kidnapped, threatened, left to die, although more suspenseful than physical.

Romance/sexual content/crushes: No sexual content. Minimal romance. Minor crush subplot. A character thinks another character is a "cute boy" several times. Nothing bad at all and nothing too mushy.

Diversity: Axton described as having "light brown skin". Iris is Jewish and Asian ("bat mitzvah" mentioned). Cressida is Black, lots of Black and White side characters, physical appearance usually stated once then moved on.

LGBTQ: None.

Overall: Ages 9-10+ should be able to enjoy this high-stakes mystery novel, more mature than the other too (theme-wise, violence wise), but still enjoyable for MG.

Edit: I already reread it because I was reading it out loud to my mom, like I did with the others! Read twice within 11 days of the release date!!! AHHHHH SO GOOOOD!!!!

Now to eagerly await for book 4!!!

"The room is cold, and I'm sitting on a hard metal chair. My whole body aches. Every muscle is tense and rigid. I take in a long, deep breath and try to calm down enough to think....
If I don't get out of here... I don't let myself finish that thought. I can't break down. I told everyone who matters to me that I could be the one to get our team to the next round....
There's no way for me to know how much time I have left.... I have to do whatever it takes to get out of here fast.

Don't give up. Think. Fight. Win. You're a winner."

✏️ Review ✏️

Chockful of new puzzles, challenges, anagrams, and villains, A Secret Escape brings further mystery and action to this series. The characters discover more startling secrets that will redefine their past and alter their futures in ways never imagined. A Secret Escape instills even more suspense into this continuing storyline.

And that ending!? 😯 Wow! Definitely a surprise! I'm quite impressed with this series so far: it's action, mystery, suspense, and drama while maintaining a clean storyline for all ages. Now I'll have to wait until next year for the next book??? That's gonna be tough in a way that only my fellow bibliophiles will understand. I wait with anticipation for what is sure to be a new thrilling installment to The Liars Society series....

"I need to win. I can win. I have what it takes. I might hate who I am and everything about my family, but I was born and bred for this moment.... Get answers. Get even. Get to the top."

Book 3️⃣ in @the_liars_society MG mystery series will keep you on your toes!
🏔️
Jack and Weatherby are now official members of The Last Heir, a worldwide secret society and are headed to a Swiss boarding school. They’ve barely arrived and suddenly someone who they needed info from is dead and the killer wants a key, going so far as to kidnap one of The Liars to get it. Can the group with their new friend (or foe?) Axton figure out who is behind the murder or will one of them be next?
🤫
Ok by why is @alysongerber so good?! This series just keeps getting better and better! Fans of The Inheritance Games and Truly Devious will find a new favorite in the middle grade age with this title releasing April 7 from @scholastic

The game is on. Jack and Weatherby have joined Last Heir—a secret society so powerful it makes royalty look broke. Their mission? Survive an elite prep school in the Swiss Alps and outsmart the competition for the ultimate prize: millions, an island, and a seat among the world’s most powerful.
But when everyone’s playing for keeps—and no one’s following the same rules—the real question isn’t who will win. It’s who will make it out.

What would you risk for everything?
Who would you trust when the stakes turn deadly?
And how far is too far to win?

Just when I figured it out, along comes another twist I did NOT see coming! Alyson Gerber is at it again. Another non stop, edge of your seat, addition to her Liar's Society series...now to wait for book 4!!!

What an excellent addition to the Liars Society story! I definitely want to go to Switzerland after reading this. The mystery was intriguing and kept me guessing through every twist and turn. This book was definitely more intense than the first two, and it will be an immediate purchase for my middle school library. I can’t wait for the next book!

What worked:
The book does a decent job of recapping previous events, so new readers won’t feel totally lost. The story alternates between Jack and Weatherby’s points of view, as they’re thrown into the middle of family and Liars Society drama. Jack’s father is one of the leaders of the society, but Jack hates his father’s ruthlessness and malevolence. His father will do anything, including murder, to maintain power and leverage over others. Weatherby’s father also detests him, even though they’re brothers. Weatherby would like to be closer to her father, but she barely knows him. She doesn’t think he’s capable of killing, but it bothers her that she can’t be certain.
Jack and Weatherby don’t want to live in a family where deceit has kept their fathers estranged and feuding. The cousins hope to discover a secret truth that will bring their fathers down. In addition, they’re competing with other new members of the Liars Society, with the reward being money and power. Jack and Weatherby team up with close friends, but the prize can’t be shared among them. Some members of the Liars Society don’t agree with this competition, and an anonymous person threatens the cousins. They assume the threat comes from an individual who committed a recent murder. They pursue the reward despite this danger, and they’re not sure how their fathers would react to them trying to reveal the family secret. They wouldn’t kill their own children, would they?
The plot is a blend of quest and mystery, as the characters follow a path leading to the ultimate prize. Characters failing to collect small stones at each step are eliminated, as they won’t uncover the next clue. However, the instructions say there aren’t any governing rules, and anything goes. Jack and Weatherby get help from their friends, and some competitors think that’s cheating. Nope! Readers may be surprised as secret alliances are revealed, and they won’t know who can be trusted. They’re all part of the Liar’s Society, so that shouldn’t come as a surprise. Jack and Weatherby eventually learn the family secret, but readers should know that there will be a fourth book.
What didn’t work as well:
There are many characters, and it’s not always easy to understand their relationships. Jack and Weatherby can’t be totally honest with their friends, and this causes conflict between Weatherby and a former close friend.
The final verdict:
I didn’t read the first two books in the series, but readers can still enjoy this one independently. This strategy may leave readers with questions about the characters, so it’s not my recommendation. The plot is intriguing and dramatic, as the characters follow the clues to uncover the family secret. I recommend you read this book after starting the series from the beginning.

Alyson Gerber’s The Liar’s Society started out with a bang and each book has been full of exciting puzzles, anagrams, secrets, lies and reveals, but this is likely the most thrilling of the trio so far.

Studying abroad in Switzerland has been a heady experience for Weatherby and Jack plus a handful of their friends but it gets much more challenging when Cressida Held, a countess and a member of The Last Heir’s voting council and inner circle of power, declares a game to determine who among the newest members of the secret organization will take her place. Of course Jack’s father intends for him to win, thus further cementing the Hunt hold on power and wealth among the group but Cressida’s own son is a competitor in the game as well as Weatherby, Prescott, Iris, Teddie and several European recent additions to The Last Heir. And along with this new competition, Weatherby and Jack have still got to figure out how to use Grier Bishop’s key to unlock her safety deposit box and uncover what secrets she has been protecting.

The game is afoot and long held alliances will not stay firm, there is another murder, friends may prove to be unfaithful, and so many lies are uncovered which, as Gerber has already done in books 1 and 2, only lead to more surprises and questions. Love new character Axton and the easy way some in the group become more than just friends. Also well done is the way that Gerber allows some key players to be sucked into the power play and let deceit rule their decision-making with one experiencing regret and striving for redemption and one finding that hurting others is an effective tool while playing the game. Can’t wait to see what comes next and wonder how many books the author finds necessary to tie up all the loose ends so that our favorite characters can relax a little and live happily ever after!

Highly recommended for lovers of action adventure and puzzle-solving middle grade thrillers.

Target age range: grades 5-8 (younger could read it but it takes quite a lot to keep all the truths, lies and family trees straight)
Profanity: none
Sexual content: none
Violence: no blood, but there is a murder by poisoning and a kidnapped character is harshly handled and left to die
Representation: primarily Caucasian, wealthy main characters but a little bit of color and less well to do mixed in, however, physical descriptions are not emphasized.
LBGTQ+: none

Thanks for the eARC, Edelweiss and Scholastic.

I have told Ms. Gerber a few times that I almost wish I did not know about this series until she was finished writing it so I could benge read it. Every sentence almost feels like a cliffhanger leaving me wanting more. While I must suspend the reality of what 13 year olds are actually able to do, I do not think actual 13 year olds would find the activities of our Liar Society members and their peers as difficult to believe.

Early in the book there is a competition between two eight graders as to who can get a bubbly drink first. Given the type of party they are attending, my adult brain goes to champagne. That doesn't feel right. Any mention of drinks in the book are non-alcoholic. I wonder how middle school students would picture the scene.

The Liars Society is taking their study abroad semester in Switzerland where Weatherby hopes to spend time getting to know her Dad as well as gain access to the information on family secrets in Geirer's bank box. The group quickly find the one person they have been told to trust, but she is murdered before they can speak with her. They are also in the middle of a game to win a spot in the inner circle of Last Heir, a large monetary gift, and ownership of an island that hold answers to many secrets. Who can they trust?

As the book came to an end, I thought I would be left both with a satisfying conclusion while still needing another book for more answers. The last few sentences blew that leaving me on a very big cliffhanger already desperately needing book four. I loved every moment of the book.

Having gotten into the Last Heir Society (an anagram for Liar's Club), Jack, Weatherby, and the others are in the society's Alpine Bunker in St. Moritz with the 18 new members. They are invited to participate in la Victoir garment to choose a new member of the voting council, and there can only be one winner of the scavenger hunt. This winner also gets 5 million Swiss francs a year, a private jet, and some islands. Cressida Held (who is Axton's mother) talks to Weatherby alone, and she is soon even more motivated to participate. There is sledding, murder, kidnapping, puzzles, anagrams galore, and lots of in fighting and treachery. But it's not over yet. The ending (which I do not want to spoil) leaves this open for yet another book.

I loved the first book, and I can see this being popular with readers who like clue oriented mysteries and puzzles like the ones in Currie's The Mystery of the Locked Room or Reese's Puzzle heart. If this were the last book in the series, I would buy it so I had a complete set, but my students are no longer reading past book three in series, and my budget has been cut 20% from what it was in 2003 (which is half of what it was in 2002), so I may not purchase.

Weatherby and Jack are still on a quest for the truth about their family. Now they are in Switzerland attending a boarding school and competing in another Last Heir challenge. This time they could win power in Last Heir, a private island, but most of all answers about their family's past. Along with their fellow Liars Society crew, the two work together to solve the clues to the new game while simultaneously trying to get access to a safe deposit box that contains answers they are looking for. But someone does not want them seeing the contents of that box and will seemingly stop at nothing to keep them from getting their hands on it.

This new installment in the Liars Society series will keep your readers happy. It is thrilling and filled with intrigue, danger, and lots of twists and turns. It once again leaves us wanting more at the end. This book would not be a good stand alone, but readers of the first two books will want to get their hands on it. It's going in my classroom for sure. I already have a waiting list of students hoping to be the first to read it!

A Secret Escape, The Liars Society Book 3 by Alyson Gerber, picks up where Book 2 left off. The Liars and some of their classmates have arrived at a fancy Swiss school and are immediately thrust into a competition for a jaw-dropping prize dangled by the Last Heir: money, a private island, and a place in the inner circle.

Jack and Weatherby know that getting to the bottom of their family's secrets depends on one of them winning the competition, but it's not going to be easy. Just as every turn in Books 1 and 2 was filled with secrets, deception, and danger, the Swiss Alps prove to be just as challenging, raising the stakes with the elevation.

The Liars Society books are perfect for my younger middle schoolers -- not quite YA like One of Us is Lying, but still much more mature than the typical middle grade novel. Aside from the peril faced by the characters, no other content concerns. My pre-ordered copy will be quickly snatched up by my mystery fans when it arrives this week.

Thanks NetGalley and Scholastic for the eARC in exchange for my honest opinions.

Weatherby, along with seventeen other competitors, travels to Switzerland to take part in the seventy-second La Victoire, a high-stakes competition to earn a coveted spot in the Last Heir’s inner circle, plus extravagant prizes like a private jet and an island called Îles de Charads. Only one winner will emerge from this scavenger-hunt-style challenge, which tests both physical endurance and mental sharpness.

As they race to solve a series of intricate puzzles, long-buried secrets about the Hunt family may finally come to light, if the mysterious letter left by Grier before her death is real. Packed with twists, turns, backstabbing, and even kidnapping, this book delivers everything middle-grade readers crave in a mystery. Secrets unravel, family bonds stretch to the breaking point, and the excellent writing keeps the pages turning.

In this third book in The Liars Society series, Weatherby, Jack, and friends are off to a boarding school in Switzerland where they will be competing in yet another Last Heir competition. They are also trying to find out the truth about what they have uncovered in the first two books (must read in order!) as well as connecting with Weatherby's dad. There are codes to solve, anagrams to crack, and life-and-death situations to survive. Judging by the ending, we can expect at least one more book in this series. (Yay!) Highly recommended for grades 5 & up.

I listened to the audiobook which has kept the same narrators throughout the series and they do a great job!

The plot thickens in this new addition to a series that has the vibes of dark academia and The Inheritance Games for a middle grade audience! Even more secrets are revealed and things get even more complicated than before. The stakes just keep getting higher and higher in this series and this would be a great pick for readers who love secrets, twists, conspiracies, and uncovering corruption.

It sometimes became a little tricker to keep all the characters and connections straight as new discoveries unfolded, but the intrigue never let up throughout the story.

My favorite book in The Liars Society series is still the first, when the world of Weatherby felt new and unfamiliar. By book three, the heavy reliance on anagrams as the solution to nearly everything started to feel repetitive, and I found myself struggling through some of the back-and-forth action in the middle.

That said, the series as a whole is still quite entertaining, and I know many of my students would disagree with my take. Fans will also be happy to know that the cliffhanger ending clearly hints that more adventures are on the way.

The Liars Society series just gets better and better with each book. I didn’t know who to trust the whole time, and the seeds of doubt are sown so beautifully. Multiple plot twists throughout make it even more exciting, and I can’t wait to recommend it to every student and also every adult I know.

I may be an adult but this book kept me fully engaged and wanting to know more with every turn of the page. Gerber continues the story of Weatherby and Jack as they travel abroad in Switzerland and the change of scenery does nothing to slow the mystery and intrigue at every turn!

Thank you to Scholastic and NetGalley for the ARC!

A Secret Escape is a fast-paced, twist-filled mystery set at a boarding school in the Swiss Alps, where secrets, power, and survival collide. Jack and Weatherby are pulled into a dangerous game tied to a secret society, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.

Gerber keeps the tension high with clever puzzles, shifting alliances, and constant surprises. The story balances action with meaningful themes of trust, loyalty, and friendship, while Weatherby shines as a strong and determined protagonist.

I was not prepared for the cliffhanger at the end and it left me desperate for the next book. A compelling, page-turning read perfect for fans of high-stakes mysteries and secret societies. This is my favorite Liars Society book yet!
