Hunted by Phantoms by Samara Kai: An Attention-grabbing PNR
Alright, bookwitches, let's talk about Hunted by Phantoms. Samara Kai doesn't mess around with her opening—the book kicks off with a scorching-hot scene that immediately grabs your attention and makes it clear that our protagonist, Marcie, has some serious, immediate needs to address.
From there, we're plunged into an intricate paranormal world with a fascinating social structure. The power-players? Vampires, werewolves, and angels. The wildcard? Marcie, with her unique unicorn bloodline, is destined for greatness. It’s a compelling setup, and I'm eager to see how her powers and influence develop.
The college setting of The Kore Academy is the place where Marcie will be exposed to a world where she asks everyone not to call her Princess; she is just plain Marcie. The professors and course assignments add a noteworthy layer to the magical world. Though the light reading assignments for final-year students felt a little unbelievable. Come on, Kai, add a zero to those page counts! This is a crucial year, not a vacation.
The book is packed with world-building and character introductions, including the promise of some juicy love triangles. But just as things are getting good, the story ends. After a single, chaotic week following Marcie’s 20th birthday, the book… stops. It's a bit jarring and feels like it ended right in the middle of the action. I really hope the future installments give us a bit more narrative breathing room.
One final note on classification: definitely not for the younger YA crowd. The first page alone is enough to confirm this is a New Adult read. Targeting readers aged 18-30 makes perfect sense, especially with the college setting and mature content. As for controlling what readers find, we all know how that goes—once a voracious reader has their sights set on a book, nothing will stop them!
