Hunted By Phantoms

Rate this book
Marceline Thornton was born to wear a crown—and to be hunted for it.

The Phantoms—an enigmatic group consumed by generations of perceived wrongs at the hands of her family—will not rest until the Thornton bloodline is destroyed.

When tragedy strikes, Marcie is torn from everything she knows and forced into the political landscape of Kore Academy, where the future lords and ladies of the queendom are molded. Before she assumes her crown, she must choose a mate powerful enough to ensure her bloodline’s survival.

Vying for her attention is Rico—a charming and confident vampire that circles her like he already owns her heart, declaring himself to be her future king. While desire tangles with duty, Marcie is hunted by unseen enemies, forcing her to embrace her future destiny as queen and confront the wrongs perpetuated by those in her line who came before her.

Hunted by Phantoms is a dark and thrilling story that kept me hooked from start to finish. The mix of suspense, danger, and supernatural elements made it impossible to put down. I loved how the author built tension while still giving space for character growth. Every chapter left me wanting more, and the twists were so well done! If you enjoy fast-paced fantasy with mystery and haunting vibes, this book is definitely for you.

This book offers an engaging plot set in a well-crafted academy world, with solid world-building that draws readers in. The story’s pacing and setting are strong points, and the premise holds real potential. The main character, Marcie, is portrayed as a strong and intelligent FMC, which makes her easy to root for at times. However, her characterization lacks consistency — her motivations often feel unclear, especially regarding her frequent romantic entanglements, which seem driven by unexplained “needs” rather than emotional depth. The inner monologues can be quite cringey and detract from the otherwise interesting storyline. Additionally, the book could benefit from a thorough edit, as issues with spelling and grammar are distracting throughout. Despite these flaws, the author shows promise, and the world itself is intriguing enough that readers may still find enjoyment if they can overlook the rough edges.

I’m sorry. This was not for me. I don’t want to spoil this for anyone so if you are interested in reading the book, please don’t continue with this review.

Firstly, my main issue was the grammar and spelling. Lots of issues there including repetitive statements, a few times a characters dialogue didn’t match the previous characters question or response, there was a very brief switch up between first and third person narration etc. I just couldn’t look past it.

Secondly, the characters. Other than Beck, none of the MCs have any redeeming qualities. Shane is a manipulating baby and Marcie is one of the worst FMCs I’ve ever come across. She’s the epitome of drama queen teen. Doesn’t want to stand out but then purposely puts herself in situations where she stands out. Continuously shirked off her bodyguard then got mad/sad that he didn’t miraculously appear when she needed him. She was emotionally abusive to him throughout the entire book but then he was equally as insufferable to her so go figure.
There were no less than 479 hot men that made her clench her thighs every 5 minutes. I like a diverse cast but I got bored of trying to get to know or like any of them because they’d be another one along shortly.

Third for me was how I felt like nothing actually happened. There was a bit of drama at the beginning and then a quick bit before the book just ends. Literally nothing in-between except rundowns on her crap coffee and the plethora of penises parading like peacocks around her. I could see where she drew inspiration for some of the characters and places as well, I feel like some weren’t subtle (I see you Sylvia *cough cough Hermione cough*).

In summary, what this book needs more than anything is an editor or beta readers. The plot was OK. It was an easy read - ignoring the mistakes - and it’s a good take on a vampire academy vibe. If it was re-edited and some parts reworked, it would have potential. From my research, I found this book has already been released then had a big rewrite but it is crying out for an editor of some description.

If you’re looking for a quick read, with supernatural, academic vibes and reads as a really young adult book but with a few sex scenes - and you can ignore grammatical errors - then this is probably something you’ll enjoy. Like I said, it wasn’t terrible (plot wise), it just needs some fresh eyes to go through it with a red pen and a keen eye.

Edited to add - the artwork is beautiful, I really love the cover.

Hunted by Phantoms is the first installment in the Thornton Bloodline series by Samara Kai. This is a fantasy romance with darker elements, danger, mystery, heartbreak, and steam.

Marceline ‘Marcie’ Thornton is a 20-year-old sheltered princes that is the last heir in the royal Thornton bloodline. Marcie has had a strict upbringing behind castle walls in preparation to one day ascend to the throne. Her parents and royal guards have shielded her from generations of danger that haunt the Chimera family called the Forsaken Phantoms. During her 20th birthday celebration, she is attacked by a banshee (which signifies an impending death) and her parents have no choice but to admit the truth. The Forsaken Phantoms have been hunting the Thornton bloodline and will stop at nothing until the line has been completely eradicated. Even Marcie’s aunt, Florence, was murdered by these enemies the night of her coronation. When tragedy strikes, Marcie is sent to Kore Academy to gain more worldly experience and find a potential suitor to stand by her side.

Marcie is a strong character. She knows her role is to put her kingdom first and sacrifice love and happiness. I found Marcie to be snobby at times and disliked how hurtful she was towards her best royal guard, Shane. It was obvious that he truly cared for her but she didn’t seem to consider how hurtful her words and actions were. I’m definitely the kind of reader the roots for the underdog (like a guard in love being able to marry the soon-to-be queen). I just wish that she had been gentler about their relationship status and ending their agreement.

Several characters are introduced while Marcie is at Kore Academy. The most memorable one is Rico, but can I just say… I don’t know that I trust him?! I actually don’t trust any of the potential suitors for Marcie (and even doubted Shane at one point). Ultimately, the grand prize for these men is to marry the queen and rule a kingdom at her side. Someone on the inside is helping the Forsaken Phantoms gain access to Marcie. Is it a guard? Professor? Friend? Trusted advisor? Definitely a lot of mystery there.

This book ends on a big cliffhanger and I’m hopeful we don’t have to wait too terribly long for the next installment to be released. Also - the first chapter of this book immediately begins with a steamy scene. Readers that want fast-burn satisfaction (ha!) will enjoy starting this book.

Tropes: Fantasy romance, royal family, different species
Heat: 3/5

Hunted by Phantoms by Samara Kai: An Attention-grabbing PNR

Alright, bookwitches, let's talk about Hunted by Phantoms. Samara Kai doesn't mess around with her opening—the book kicks off with a scorching-hot scene that immediately grabs your attention and makes it clear that our protagonist, Marcie, has some serious, immediate needs to address.

From there, we're plunged into an intricate paranormal world with a fascinating social structure. The power-players? Vampires, werewolves, and angels. The wildcard? Marcie, with her unique unicorn bloodline, is destined for greatness. It’s a compelling setup, and I'm eager to see how her powers and influence develop.

The college setting of The Kore Academy is the place where Marcie will be exposed to a world where she asks everyone not to call her Princess; she is just plain Marcie. The professors and course assignments add a noteworthy layer to the magical world. Though the light reading assignments for final-year students felt a little unbelievable. Come on, Kai, add a zero to those page counts! This is a crucial year, not a vacation.

The book is packed with world-building and character introductions, including the promise of some juicy love triangles. But just as things are getting good, the story ends. After a single, chaotic week following Marcie’s 20th birthday, the book… stops. It's a bit jarring and feels like it ended right in the middle of the action. I really hope the future installments give us a bit more narrative breathing room.

One final note on classification: definitely not for the younger YA crowd. The first page alone is enough to confirm this is a New Adult read. Targeting readers aged 18-30 makes perfect sense, especially with the college setting and mature content. As for controlling what readers find, we all know how that goes—once a voracious reader has their sights set on a book, nothing will stop them!

✨ ARC Review – Hunted by Phantoms by Samara Kai 🖤👑

Firstly, thank you to the author for the ARC copy of Hunted by Phantoms!

🩸 Spoiler-Free Summary:

The story follows Marceline Thornton, the last heir to a dying royal bloodline who’s been hunted by the mysterious Phantoms for generations. After tragedy strikes, she’s forced into Kore Academy, where future rulers are trained. To survive, she must choose a mate powerful enough to protect her line while uncovering the dark truths behind her family’s history. But as enemies close in, she realises the true danger may not only come from the outside…

⭐ My Thoughts:

This book had so much potential - the worldbuilding, the academy setting, and the premise of political power mixed with dark magic were all really intriguing. Unfortunately, for me, it just tried to do a little too much at once.

I actually really liked the MMCs - they each had their own distinct personalities, goals, and charm, and I found myself wanting to see more of them. However, the FMC was where the story started to lose me. She often came across as inconsistent - wanting to be treated like everyone else, but then looking down on those closest to her (especially her best friend/ body guard, Shane, who genuinely seems to truly love her🥺).

There were also a few strange pacing and tone shifts, and some of the “spice” moments felt dropped in - We haven't been told much about why she has these "needs" and it just feels like a reason for spice without much emotional build-up or explanation (the opening scene definitely caught me off guard 😅).

The ending was a massive cliffhanger - it honestly felt like the story was just getting started when it stopped, which left me a little unsatisfied and was pretty jarring. I can absolutely see the potential here and would be interested to see how the author develops the world and characters in book two, but the FMC definitely needs some more work.

⭐ Rating: 3/5

This book felt less like 'Paranormal Romance' and more 'Supernatural Reverse Harem'. There's little to no actual paranormal activity, but way more supernatural.

There are vampires, werewolves, and angels all in a school, yet her unicorn blood is destined for greatness.
The FMC is supposed to be emotionally mature and capable, yet her character is extremely inconsistent - her many romantic/sexual encounters don't always have a clear reason or purpose. Those spicy moments felt abrupt, more for the sake of it than actually contributing to the plot. Her 'needs' aren't explained, and rather than the emotional depth that romance is supposed to develop, it feels more just like physical acts without even an explanation.
She is hypocritcal and contradicts her words with her actions, wanting to be like all the others yet looks down on her friends (and Shane). Her push and pull with all the males was neverending and frankly, I got irritated at her behaviour.

The same phrases were said over and over again, repetitive and dull without emphasis. And I suggest re-editing it, there were a lot of mistakes with spelling, grammar (which was perhaps the most painful of all) and punctuation. In regards to looking over it again, the conversations didn't always flow smoothly and felt rather mismatched at times.

However, the concept has potential to be developed well, and the storyline could've been progressive if not for the slow pacing. The love triangle was quite compelling at first, but as it builds up... the book ends. It's unpleasantly stops the flow of the story, and felt really out of place.

This is a supernatural, urban fantasy romance with a reverse harem with potential to be a gripping story. Sadly, I wouldn't read this again.

This story follows Marceline (Marcie), a sheltered heiress to the throne. A princess destined to rule her kingdom one day, awaiting for her to be arranged to her magical being mate. When tragedy strikes her life, hidden secrets come to life and she is sent to Kore Academy for her safety and continued education. Kore Academy, where future lords, ladies are shaped into the next leaders of the country. For years, Marcie has had her “urges” in secret with her guard, Shane, a man she truly wished she could possess true feelings for. Unfortunately due to her being the only heir, she is forced to end whatever physical relationship they share to seek a mate worthy of the crown. Once at Kore, her path starts to unravel and Marcie starts to see her life with different eyes. Can she truly find her mate in time, the pressure is on.

The blurb had me hooked and I dove in instantly, I was truly disappointed after her arrival at Kore. It felt like the plot changed multiple times within that time frame. I felt frustrated with how Marcie was giving so much whiplash, her constant tug and pull of Shane and other males within the book. At times I felt confused as to what I was reading as it kept changing perspectives, from 1st to 3rd person narrative.

I expected so much more from Marcie’s character and her story other than just wanting to dive into any mans arms that will show her attention. She’s mentally strong, smart and ambitious- she knows what is expected of her and does just that. Unfortunately it feels like she fell flat of those traits during certain moments in the read, which was unfortunate. I wish we could have more of the Marcie’s brilliance show through.

A sheltered princess, a crown looming, and too many secrets at court… 👑✨

📖 Hunted by Phantoms by Samara Kai
⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (2.75)
🌶🌶➕

This story follows Marceline (Marcie), a sheltered princess destined to rule her kingdom one day. After tragedy strikes, she’s sent to Kore Academy, where the next lords and ladies are shaped into leaders. For years, she’s had a physical relationship with her guard, Shane, but with the crown coming to her in just a year, she’s forced to end it and seek a mate fit to rule beside her. At Kore, she meets Rico—and her path becomes even more complicated.

The premise had me hooked, and I was excited to dive in. But while the blurb promised a lot, the plot itself felt thinner than I’d hoped. Not much really happened, and I was frustrated with how Marcie ended things with Shane—it was so cruel and hard to read. On top of that, her constant attraction to every man she came across, paired with some cringey inner monologues, pulled me out of the story at times.

That being said, I don’t necessarily relate to Marcie, but I admire her character. She’s strong, smart, and ambitious—she knows what she wants and is moving toward it, even if she stumbles. I just wish the ending had given more answers instead of circling back to where we started.

Thank you BookSirens for this ARC.

Spice: 4/5
Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal Romance, Academy Romance, Reverse Harem
ARC Source: I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Thoughts: I’m going to review this as a young adult book because I think it suits this genre the best. If I reviewed this any other way, I would consider the main characters, Marcie and Shane petulant children who are extremely toxic for each other and don’t know how to communicate. However, when you view this from a YA viewpoint, it becomes more of an angsty, forbidden love that can’t be done because he’s a guard and she’s a princess and they don’t know how to handle their feelings or the situation so they often lash out at each other. They’re also both under a lot of stress because she only has a year to find someone to marry, while he has to watch her do this because he’s her guard. The book starts off with a spicy scene but then there’s not much more from there on in this first installment of the series. We are introduced to her possible harem but will have to wait until further books to find out for sure. The main focus is on Marcie learning more about how “normal” people live and how her family impacts them. There seems to be quite a few gaps in the plot that I hope get filled in with the remaining books. I think as a YA book a good amount of people would like this book.

I really liked the plot of the story and the characters have such potential. My biggest complaint was the perspective of the writing….sometimes it was like Marcie was the one telling the story but then it would switch, sometimes mid paragraph and it was like a third party was telling the story.

Even with this little bit of confusing writing, the overall story was really good and I am hopeful that there will be a Book 2….

This book has the potential to be a reverse harem… your FMC is Marcie. She is the Princess of this world and is next in line to be queen. For to her “nature”, she has needs that have to be met. Shane, her guard, has always taken care of her, but his feelings are getting in the way and Marcie wants to branch out to allow them both a chance to move on. Rico is the second male that is introduced once Marcie arrives at the academy. He has potential and we see Marcie is drawn to him. The last of the males that Marcie is attracted to is Beck. However, we see that the same issues that keep her and Shane from being more would cause her and Beck to not be able to move forward with their relationship.

I can see where this could evolve into a relationship with all the men. The book ends on a HUGE cliffhanger and I am eager to see what happens next.

I was really hoping to enjoy this book. The book has a good storyline, but the characters are not what I was expecting. The FMC is a spoiled princess that tells everyone she just wants to be treated like a normal person but then expects some people to drop at her command. She is rude, uncaring, hypocritical, and entitled. There is no real in-depth representation of the MCs and you don't really get to know them. One of the MMCs is her guard, that she has known since she was a kid and she treats him like garbage, but the man needs to grow a spine and learn to stand up for himself instead of just throwing a fit like a little kid.
There are enough men in just this first book to make it a great why choose but the FMC doesn't think that's right but every guy she meets turns her head and she has dirty thoughts about each of them.
I was really hoping to love this book, but it needs more to bring in the reader. And I think that the characters could use more finesse and depth to them. When there is hate I want to be able to feel it or when there is accusation or just happiness or sadness, I want to be able to feel all those emotions.

Hunted by Phantoms is the first book in the Thornton Bloodlines series. This does end on a major cliffhanger.

First I would like to start by saying I loved the idea of this book. The magic system and kingdom are very intriguing. Marcie is a sheltered princess set to rule the kingdom one day. Her magic is a mystery and I’m excited to read the next book to complete her storyline. However, I did have a hard time getting into this book. Not sure if it was the 3rd person POV or the very slow plot build.

This book started off with an intense spicy scene but didn’t really continue with the theme.

Either way the story was beautiful with minor grammatical errors. I loved all the paranormal aspects and would love to see what the author has in store of all the mythical beings

I’m also interested to see if this may turn into a why choose eventually. 👀

This books was good. I have never read anything by Samara Kai before. It is well written with a few minor typos.

Marcie Thornton is a princess whose family is being attacked by subjects that do not agree with her families reign. After a sudden death, she must leave her castle to attend the academy in preparation to become queen.

Shame is her bodyguard and lover. They grew up together and he follows where she goes. Moving to the academy with her has strained their relationship.

Can Marcie survive the academy and become queen? Will her relationship with Shane last?

While the story is well written, I do not care for the focus on “her need.” I understand it, but I’m not a fan of that being a need. However, the spicey scenes are well written.

Leaving me on cliffhanger has me needing to read the second book. I want to know what comes next. I liked the book and will continue the series. It’s a 3.8 stars for me.

If fast burn is your jam, can't get much faster than the opening pages! Overall, though, I found it underwhelming - unfleshed plot, more spelling/grammar/pov errors than I'd expect this close to publication, and an unrelatable FMC. Which is a shame, because I think the concept and magic system could be great!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I think Marcie was what ruined it for me - a spoiled, sheltered princess is one thing… but there were no redeeming qualities to make me want to *like* her to balance them out. She treats her closest/only friend that she's known since childhood like trash, and honestly I'd root for her assassination just because he deserves better 😂🙈

I appreciated the chance to review this one, and hope later books will flesh out more in the weak spots of this one… but I won't be continuing the series.

Princess Marcie has just lost her mother. Before becoming Queen she must attend Kore Academy. Many things await her there, potential mates, old enemies and new friends. She has one year to find a husband that will help her rule her kingdom. This is a reverse harem, so many mates can be expected.

I feel like there was not much plot given in the first book. It was really short. Instead of Marcie being the center of the story, IMO it mostly reflected on Shane, the bodyguard for about 75% . The back and forth toxic drama between the two gave me emotional whiplash. I think he might end up being one of her mates, because why put so much effort into having him always be around, acting territorially. The family history that was kept from Marcie was interesting. I would like to read more of in the next book.

The premise of Marcie, the last heir of a dying line, being hunted by ancient forces and forced into Kore Academy to choose a powerful mate, sounded so promising. I love a good academy setting with high stakes! Rico, the charming vampire who declares himself her future king, definitely added some delicious tension. However, while the concept was strong and the idea of her embracing her destiny was compelling, I felt the pacing was a little uneven at times. Some parts felt a bit rushed, and I wished for a deeper dive into the world-building or the emotional complexities of her situation. However I did enjoy it and woul recommend it for a light academy romance with political intrigue read.

Marcie is trying to step up as ruler after the death of her mother amidst her own magic coming to life within her.

She must find a suitor before she’s able to assume the throne, and she’s randomly assigned to attend Kore Academy to learn more about the history of her people and to presumably find a mate. Her favorite guard is also assigned.

The pacing of this book is good, albeit not everything is explained fully. We kind of know that Marcie is a Chimera, but it’s not explained why her powers aren’t manifesting. The ending also leaves something to be desired. It seems a little rushed at the end, and I’m not seeing how the series is going to be continued, but I’d like to read the second book when it comes out just to see.

This is a no from me. I liked the idea behind it, I just feel it wasn’t executed well.

This book follows Marcie, future queen of her realm, as she enrolls in the local magical university to complete a year of schooling before she can ascend the throne. She’s also tasked with finding a mate during her year in school, and it must be one of the “big 3”- either an angel, a vampire, or a werewolf.

Again, the premise sounds great, but everything felt extremely disjointed and then it abruptly ends in what felt like the middle of a chapter. It was a super short read, so I expected there to not be much in the way of world building, but I didn’t expect it to end quite literally mid-conversation.

Thank you to the author and Book Sirens for the ARC in exchange for my honest feedback.

Wow this was not at all what I expected. Fast paced with lots of feelings going every way around. Marcie is trying to make up for her mistake of relying on Shane for all her needs and he is a whinny brat of a man who does not want to accept what he knows is right in front of him. When he pouts Marcie gets hurt because he can’t do his job. I think she needs to switch him out for a different guard.

Marcie is finding herself in a very confusing position. She’s never really had true feelings for anyone and so far there’s a student , the Gardner and possibly a teacher. What ever her power is she needs to get control quickly before she damages everyone around her and herself. Can’t wait for the next book

This book started very strongly, and the story picked up pretty quickly. I almost lost interest when I found out she was a 'new adult' and was attending an academy. These are two subjects that I tend to stray from as they don't really interest me much. I stuck through it and I'm happy I did! I' kind of excited for the next one! I have so many questions about Shade, Beck, and Rico. I want to learn more about the Thornton bloodline and see how Marcie grows as a person. Will she give in and take Shane even though he isn't a royal? Will she end up with Rico? I know I would take both Shane and Rico. And what is Beck?

Princess Marcie has great promise. I find it interesting that she has “needs” that need to be met. It’s never explained what that has to do with her being a Chimera? I think that’s what she is. I feel like that part of her should be briefly touched on to close the gap of uncertainty. The book has a well paced storyline but the reverse harem them is not in play in this book. She may be interested in different guys but has only had a relationship with one. Curious to see how this is going to play out. Looking forward to book 2.

I admit I am a bit thorn with this 1st book.
I like the idea of the FMC powers and her trying to find a place for herself while learning about her family and their secrets... Nevertheless, they were far too many times where I had to put the book down and ask myself why I kept reading.
I usually don't have problems reading teen / YA and academy settings, but this one felt a bit weak.
I would read book two, but I can't bring myself to go out of my way to recommend this book. It's a bit of a miss for me :/

I am thankful for getting the ARC of this book, and I am leaving this review freely.

I think this book has a lot of potential for a really great story. It felt like it was bookended by a lot of great elements but then in the middle... nothing really happened. She felt attracted to every guy she met but it didn't really move the plot along and I have a lot of questions left. Set up well for a cliffhanger, and the next book but it doesn't feel like the relationships are strong enough for the main character to really move forward with anything. I love the idea of the story and the storyline and I think it would be much better in first person POV.

I really enjoyed this as an opening chapter in the Thornton Bloodline series, it had that element that I was wanting and enjoyed the paranormal reverse harem. It uses the dark fantasy concept perfectly and enjoyed how it introduced the world and characters to the reader. Samara Kai has a strong writing style and enjoyed how the characters were in this universe and left me excited for more in this series.

I found the first chapter of this book very long but i also found the book very predictable. I wasn't ecited to see what happens next how ever, i still did want to try and found out what was going to happen at the end and if my predictions were rgiht or wrong. I found that I enjoyed the story line very well, i just feel like some fo the chapters could of been shorter or added to a different chapter.

In Hunted by Phantoms we are taken on a journey right alongside the main character Marceline as she goes from a spoiled princess to a grown women. On her journey she struggles with her magical heritage and complex relationships.
Overall, the storyline was good. It is written in third person. Which is the only reason I am dropping my rating as I was not a huge fan of how it read.
I receive this book as an ARC.

It was a great start to the Thornton Bloodline series, the characters were what I was hoping for. It was a great paranormal atmosphere and worked so well. I was invested in what was going on and enjoyed the way Samara Kai wrote this. I can't wait to read more in this series.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
