Civil War Journal from the 2nd Michigan contains the reminiscences of her great-grandfather, Harmon Camburn, who joined the Union Army on April 20, 1861. This book, was an ABSOLUTELY AMAZING READ!!

As a native South Floridian, I was totally enthralled with this book! Could not put it down!! Such Awesome characters, that you get to feel like you know them. It takes me back to camping and fishing, and spending time with friends and family, as I grew up. And we still dislike, what has become of the state we were children in. Children today, have no idea of camping on an island, nor playing in the woods.

This book was hard to get into - was ready to stop after the first four chapters - but it did get better as it went on. I wouldn't recommend this book though. Too many characters - unbelievable plot. Political bias etc. The 1700's back story is what kept me reading - that part of the book was very good. The rest? Totally unbelievable situations and unrealistic plot.

The native tribes in Florida, rise up to preserve their ways and lands. Beautifully narrated of what they faced, with corruption and lies and murder. Narration was great and added a depth and suspense to this gripping story. Given audio for my voluntary review

Native Lands is a gripping and entertaining thriller with depth, wonderful characters and well-planted parallels between the two engaging narratives. There is a beautiful and warm feel of Native Lands and an excellent and uplifting moral that won’t lecture or patronize. A truly great read.

“Native Lands” by P.C. Zick is a wonderful novel and a gripping thriller at the same time. Handling several plotlines and many characters with ease Zick has a story rich in plot and full of fabulous characters.

One narrative focuses on members of a native tribe in Florida from 1760 onwards. The instantly likable characters strive to preserve their heritage against the forces of the English and Spanish intruders. The peaceful and nature loving characters form a wonderful thread through the rest of the book that deals with more contemporary issues.

Journalists, politicians and business men crowd the stage in a cleverly plotted and excellently told thriller. Exploitation of nature, affairs, family secrets and murder are just some of the many spicy ingredients that make this novel so entertaining. I was warned that there would be a lot of characters in this book and that is true, but the narratives focus thoroughly on each party in turn and are easily discerned , the characters evolved and memorable enough to make it very easy to keep track.

There are some surprising connections and twist within the political plot which focuses on a controversial housing project and the outrageous plan which lies behind it, poachers, environmentalists and an election. As people are being bumped off the plot thickens and keeps the pace fast and captivating.

I loved the way in which the past and present story lines turn out to be connected and I loved the well planted parallels between the two narratives and the warm feel of the book. This was an excellent and uplifting moral tale to me that did not lecture or patronise, a gripping and entertaining thriller with depth and wonderful characters.

Excellent Environmental Fiction

The story, set in Florida, alternates between the lives of Locka and Mali in the distant past, and Emily Booth, Rob Zodiac, and Barbara Evans in the present.

In the mid-eighteenth century, Locka feels pain. His wife and son disappeared five years ago in a Spanish raid. He notices Mali. The beautiful woman is the only one who doesn't flirt with Locka.

Emily is a business owner, wife, and mother of a challenging teen. Her husband Daniel demonstrates his skill in Machiavellian techniques when he sets the foundation for his run for public office before he tells her.

Barbara is a former reporter, working now as a columnist. She's making her mark writing about environmental issues.

A real estate developer believes economic powers rule the world. He is determined create urban living zones in Florida. How far will he and his associates go to make his dreams a reality?

P. C. Zick presents readers with an excellent book. She captures the sights, sounds, and smells of tribal living in the 1760s. At the same time, she demonstrates political savvy with her insight into Florida politics. Ms. Zick also deftly and sensitively addresses social issues, including the environment and homelessness, without ever hopping up on a soapbox and preaching at the readers.

“Native Lands” by P.C. Zick is a great read about the battle of money power and nature. Zick is a journalist who writes about nature and her love for nature. This book is one of the books you would like to read if you like nature and historical fictions. The story is based in Florida, and is jumping in time (I truly love these kind of books..), Present and the late 18th Century, the Spanish invasion, British too, which took a toll of native people lives and nature. Zick captures the momentum and makes you feel like you are actually touring the places, meeting the fascinating people of the past, and also the presents. What is happening in the Glades, Past and present? The tension is there in every step: Love, life, murder and, compassion verses personal needs and selfishness. Everything that has to do with nature and human nature you will find in the touching story. I highly recommend!
