The Night I Survived Bigfoot

Something strange is happening in a small community in the Deep South. For many years, there has been a legend that Sasquatches are residing on a remote property a few miles away from town. A well-fortified privacy fence surrounds the private area, and outsiders are strictly prohibited from entering. The young people know little about the legend because the older generation refuses to discuss it. Three twelve-year-old boys decide to solve the mystery once and for all, as they have the all-night adventure of their lives. This is a coming-of-age story about the dangers of disobeying parents, sneaking out in the middle of the night, and trespassing on private land where legendary creatures are thought to exist.

This book addresses realistic youth circumstances such as the loss of a parent, a single-parent home, adjusting to middle school, difficult personalities, and conflict resolution. It includes moral dilemmas such as lying, sneaking out of the house in the middle of the night, trespassing on local farms, cow tipping for initiation purposes, risking safety, and accepting consequences. The biggest lesson is that young people should not make bad decisions that put them in danger. The setting is patterned after many small communities in the Deep South where the local economy centers on farming, coal mining, and some manufacturing. Teachers are using this book as a platform for discussions about what can happen if their students put themselves where they are not supposed to be.

This was a very entertaining read, perfect for anyone from pre-teens to adults. The story is very gripping and well-developed, and it's very difficult to put down. If you have any interest at all in cryptids or mysteries, this is a great book to add to your list.
