About the author

I was born in Krefeld, Germany in 1976 and still live there under the caring eyes of my wife and two Norwegian Forest cats. Originally a publishing salesman, I couldn't resist the lure of writing, and after over a dozen years of playing the gamemaster in pen-and-paper groups, not to mention reading hundreds of fantasy novels, I decided to finally try to write a story myself that I thought might be worth telling. And so my novel Ahren was published in Germany, the first in the best-selling series The 13th Paladin.

When I am not creating new worlds and stories, I like to relax by playing pen-and-paper and story rich video games, reading or binging on TV series. I also practise Jiu Jitsu and the art of handling ancient Japanese weapons like the Katana or the Bo Staff.

Potrebbe essere tranquillamente un 5 stelle, poiché estremamente scorrevole, con un world building eccellente e che viene presentato nello scorrere di una storia che riesce a catturare sin dai primi capitoli. Anche il cast di personaggi è davvero ottimo, con i vari archetipi fantasy ottimamente rappresentati, senza comunqje risultare stantii , e con colpi di scena di ottimo livello. Mi ha positivamente stupito anche la dinamicità di tante scene, che spesso sono il punto deboli di romanzi fantasy e storici, in cui le battaglie sono fin troppe volte mal rappresentate, e spesso descritte in maniera o troppo superficiale, o al contrario troppo tecnica e poco scorrevole.
Ciò che mi frena da dare la quinta stella sono un po' di ridondanza negli atteggiamenti della protagonista, poi parzialmente giustificati verso il finale, ma comunque troppo opprimenti durante certi passaggi, e la cattiva gestione dell'idea della temporalità in alcuni punti, dove i personaggi sembrano aver vissuto settimane intense di vita vissuta, dove si cerca di far percepire ai lettori i disagi, le gioie, le sofferenze, la profondità dei legami, quando nella realtà dei fatti sono passai appena uno o due giorni. Problema minimale ma che rompe un po' la sospensione dell'icredulità, nulla di grave comunque e che facilmente si dimentica lungo la lettura

an orphan with impossible odds, a brutal academy, ancient gods, political scheming, a rag tag found family and a tiny dragon. 🤍 I LIVEEEE

this is pure, unadulterated epic fantasy and i absolutely adored every second of it.

this is the kind of fantasy that reminds me why i fell in love with the genre in the first place. sprawling world building, rich history, dangerous politics, ancient races and enough lore to completely disappear into without ever feeling like you’re drowning beneath it.

niri is exactly the sort of protagonist i can’t help rooting for. resilient without becoming invincible, clever without somehow always having the answer, and forced to earn every tiny victory in a world that has already decided she deserves nothing. her journey feels difficult in all the right ways.

Stormfell is equally unforgiving. prejudice, class divides and ruthless competition seep through every corridor, making it feel like surviving the academy is almost as dangerous as anything waiting beyond its walls. despite the scope of the world, the story never loses sight of its characters, and i quickly became invested in Niri’s growing circle of companions.

special mention to lil G, who instantly secured his place as one of my favourite fantasy creatures. every fantasy deserves a tiny dragon.

what impressed me most though was the confidence of the storytelling. there’s no reliance on romance to carry emotional weight or manufacture stakes. instead, it trusts its world, its characters and its adventure to do the heavy lifting, and they absolutely do.

it sits comfortably alongside Witcher in spirit. sprawling, dangerous and unapologetically fantasy. if you’re someone who misses epic fantasy simply being allowed to be epic fantasy, this absolutely deserves a place on your tbr.

'The Tower of Beggars' is an epic fantasy set in a world majority ruled by a god of fire ( and the usual things that go along with it ) creating a very unforgiving and competitive world. Niri, our protagonist, is one of those who suffer greatly in such a world, being half human and half of a previously powerful race. This leads to a lot of prejudice that she must face as a measly coal transporter in a city that hates her. Unfortunate events lead Niri to Stormfell academy where she thinks she will finally be free, but as it turns out, it is an equally as cruel place for a person like her...and well everyone who isn't rich.

Niri is a very resilient character, and luckily she isn't the dumbest person in the room but she is inexperienced and we get to see her learning throughout the story which is nice.

The side characters introduced are interesting as dont seem to be 2 dimensional. My personally favourite is indeed Grabbasnack, but he is the comic relief (who is actually useful!) So it is hard not like him.

The plot overall is paced quite nicely, there is a bit of dragging in beginning but it gets Niri where she needs to be. There was also a good excuse to have some info dumping about the lore of the world, so that kept big blocks of information interesting. The ending happened a little fast but I find that typical for most books.

I am very exicited to see where this series goes as we only got a small glimpse of the world and Niri's story within it, i am also excited to see how her companionships play out in later installments.

Un bel fantasy su cui scommettevo molto poco. All'inizio scorre lento, ma dalla metà diventa incalzante. Il world building è promettente (anche perché si spinge ben oltre alla realtà "scolastica), toccando temi complessi come squilibri di potere (e soprattutto di capitale), rapporti con gli dei e l'eterna lotta tra azione e riflessione. Peccato per le espressioni lessicali un po' ripetitive ("sprofondó", "puoi fidarti", ecc) che vessano un po' la scorrevolezza. Ho gią cominciato il secondo della saga comunque, sono estremamente curiosa!

Ma basta, basta, bastaaaa: dirò addio ad Audible per un po', perché trovo solo libri letti male oppure libri noiosi letti benissimo. Questo nello specifico rientra nella seconda categoria. Il lettore è estremamente abile - crea persino un tono di voce diverso per ogni personaggio in base alla specie di appartenenza - ma non riesce a nascondere quanto sia L E N T A la trama. Ed è un peccato, perché il materiale per una buona storia ci sarebbe 🤷🏻‍♀️

trovare in fondo a questo libro È STATA UNA TORTURA! la storia di questa povera anima è così un disastro che mi fa male proseguire. alla fine le ultime tre ore le ho divorate e non so cosa fare nell'attesa del due. il nome del libro è già evidente.
e soprattutto: quel mezz'uomo chi diavolo è? aaaa devo saper
