Andrew Warren’s latest installment of the Thomas Caine series is a deeply interesting story with many plots and well-developed characters in nonlinear narratives that somehow all fit together in a heart-pounding, page-turning dramatic read. What fun this book is! My favorite scene is at the beginning; I won’t ruin it for you, but it involves a shotgun and a train.
I don’t particularly like fiction and rarely read it. But Thomas Caine reminds me of a combination of Dirty Harry, Daredevil, James Bond and a bit of an anti-hero that I can’t quantify. That's unique.
There are a lot of elements to like about this book:
- richly descriptive scenes that make the reader “see” the forest because you are there, gawking at giant conifers, smelling the pines, feeling the crunch of the needled ground.
- multi-dimensional plots and characters that span many books
- history of deeds and misdeeds that echo and sometimes haunt Thomas and other main characters, and make the characters feel very relatable
- There is so much action, described in intricate detail. Unlike movies where the action happens so fast that most of it is missed, this author takes pains to tell each step of action and reaction.
- avoids cheap clichés and uses limited foul language to fit the scene. That’s good writing.
- Unpredictable. Usually, I can figure out what will happen before it does. Not with “Hunting Ground” and Thomas Caine.
- The book stands on its own; you don’t have to know his history to read, enjoy, and understand the book. It may just make you want to read earlier books to know “the rest of the story.”
The main character, Caine, is a resolute, good man that has a relentless killer insider that comes out at just the right time. He is vulnerable, kind, honest, but also hard, pragmatic, disciplined, and unyielding. Like Bond, he is not a superman, but acts like one regardless of the physical cost. I felt physically beat for a while after reading it. It would be cool if he could fly, but unfortunately he is as susceptible to gravity as the rest of us. Unlike Bond, I don't see an off ramp for this character, but is there really an off ramp for any of us, once the die is cast?
The only thing, if I were to find something lacking (and there’s not much at all), is the depth of character development of the villains. Not that we want to like them; just understand them "a little" more dimensionally. It would also be interesting to have some prequels that show how, why, and when Thomas Caine became the man, he is now; complex, unpredictable, loving, and yet a killer without mercy when necessary. It would be nice if it were 100 pages longer, but maybe I don't understand the genre.
It reads like an enormous box office Hollywood action movie that would probably take a season per book. I would imagine that is partially because the author is also involved in movie production and writing.
It’s a mystery to me why a big-name publisher or movie studio have not recognized, appreciated, and picked up this writer.
Recently, I started reading an ARC from a member of Military Thriller Book Group, Andrew Warren, and his latest Thomas Caine thriller, The Hunting Ground. This book is due to be published (released on 16 April 2026).
I have had this author on my TBR pile for some time (and unfortunately never got around to him). Apparently, this is the seventh book in the series (which, of course means that I may be adding even more books to the teetering TBR pile).
The premise behind this awesome read is that shortly after returning home from a grueling mission overseas, our protagonist CIA Paramilitary Officer Thomas Caine attempts to pick up where he left off and is eager to resume his relationship with Rebecca Freeling. Even if it means leaving his career behind.
But fate has other plans...
A bomb reduces a US federal building to smoking rubble. The conflict becomes personal for Caine because someone close to him is killed in the explosion.
Driven by a need for vengeance, Caine sets out on a "warpath" that takes him from New Jersey to the San Bernardino Mountains, putting him on a direct collision course with the extremists and the CIA's most lethal killer is determined to bring those responsible to justice, no matter the cost.
From New Jersey's urban sprawl to a remote town in the San Bernardino Mountains, Caine's hunt for vengeance sets him on a collision course with a sinister new domestic terror group-and thrusts him into a conspiracy reaching the highest levels of government. These violent extremists are determined to plunge America into a new Civil War...
The intrigue of this "new" (at least to me) author is that he manages to take the lone hero, put them into a situation where they struggle to walk a razor's edge not knowing who they can trust (or whether they might be betrayed), and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat turning the page.
That said, I would highly recommend this writer (and this series) to those aficionados of action and counterintelligence reads. Perfect for readers of authors such as Paul Heatley, Aiden Bailey, and Sam Cogley.
I really enjoyed my sojourn into Andrew Warren's world of Thomas Caine and would definitely give this book a solid four stars.
As with all my literary mumblings, this is just my five cents' worth.
This is part of a series and one I have just joined. The author gave enough detail to understand the character and traits of Tom Caine, for me to get a handle on him. It is the 7th book in the series. Tom is a CIA paramilitary operative and he has seen some really bad stuff, been involved in and lost his friend to it. He promised his friend that he would look out for his son Sean. while Tom is no father figure he does want to take Sean under his wing. This never happens as Sean is s killed during what should be a peaceful protest. wanting to get justice, Tom breaks his promise to his partner Rebecca, rather than leave his world of danger behind,he is searching for the truth.
The peaceful protest is something that many can understand, also how there always seems to be a small number that are there for violence and disruption. This is the case for this protest. Tom is initially by himself as he follows clues, one takes him to an old friend and colleague, Frank. Unfortunately Frank is dead. It is this death that leads an FBI agent to also be in the same area as Tom.
I got immediately engrossed with this story as it starts with such a dramatic event, the death of Sean propels Tom to the mountains and the area of native American reservation, this has links to the protests. There are some extreme right wing views with a local military and while Tom thinks they have an agenda, he has no idea just how dangerous their plans are.
This is an action packed, holds barred thriller and the author keeps the danger and action constantly moving. it is a fast paced story, but one that has a lot of twists within it. I really like Tom's character and the way the author portrays him. Not afraid of standing up for himself and others, a sense of right and wrong and what things should be like. But then not above taking the law into his own hands when he feels that it is the right course of action.
If you are looking for a US homeland security, terrorism and action packed thriller then this is one you may like. It is one I would definitely recommend.
Hunting Ground by Andrew Warren is an absolute five-star, adrenaline-fueled thriller that hooked me from the very first page and never let go.
The story kicks off with a gripping, high-impact opening that immediately pulls you into the world of Tom Caine. When someone close to Caine dies in a tragic event, his need for justice becomes deeply personal—and what follows is a relentless, emotionally charged pursuit of the truth. Teaming up with FBI Special Agent AJ Zavala, Caine uncovers a dangerous terrorist group with a chilling agenda, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
This is exactly the kind of thriller I love: fast-paced, action-packed, and packed with tension and suspense. The plot feels all too believable in today’s world, which only adds to the intensity. The short, cliffhanger-style chapters kept me constantly turning the pages, always needing to know what would happen next.
Both Caine and Zavala are incredibly likeable, well-drawn characters who bring depth and heart to the story amid all the chaos. The writing is sharp and engaging, and it’s clear the author knows exactly how to deliver a gripping, cinematic reading experience.
Although this is the seventh book in the series—and my first—I had no trouble following along. There are references to past events, but it absolutely works as a standalone. That said, I’m definitely going to go back and start from the beginning because this was such an entertaining read.
Overall, Hunting Ground is a thrilling, high-stakes ride that delivers on every level. Highly recommended for anyone who loves action-packed, edge-of-your-seat thrillers.
I received an ARC through "NetGalley" and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This story begins with Caine on a mission in India where he has to prevent a bomb impacting a visiting politician. Tom manages to prevent the incident and is soon on his way back to America. While he is in flight, he makes a determination that he is going to quit the CIA and spend more time with his girlfriend Rebecca. He makes arrangements to meet up with her in Hawaii, but before he flies out, he discovers that a bomb has gone off in the building Rebecca was at and dashes from the airport to get to the scene. On arriving at the scene he learns that Rebecca is alright since she was saved by Tom's friend Sean, but Sean did not make it. To make matters worse, someone was trying to pin the bombing incident on Sean. Tom decided to find out who was responsible and make them pay. He gets information and discovers that Silver Talon, a militia, was involved and then heads to the location where the militia is headquartered. He later discovered that this group was also responsible for the disappearance of Frank Baldwin, a retired FBI agent, which brought a friend of Frank's, AJ Zavala an FBI agent, on the scene.
Read about all of the exciting events that Tom and AJ wound up being involved. Learn what events the "Silver Talon" were planning and read how Tom and AJ wound up being involved.
This story has all of the action that you would want. The ending is well done and this is definitely well worth reading. Don't miss out!
CIA operative Thomas Caine has just come home after another tough overseas adventure and looking to renew his human connections, his only way to counter his life as a killer. But terrorists strike a federal building where both his best friend and potential love interest and the son of a downed fellow operative happen to be, promoting him to ignore the proscription against CIA activity inside the US, at risk of his career and his life. As he investigates the bombing and discovers more terror is planned, he pursues the enemy wherever he must, racked with guilt over failing to keep his promise to look after his friend's son. Meeting every escalating action with his usual fortitude and skill, Caine's vengeance on his and his country's enemies will entertain military thriller fans every step of the way. A solid, exciting entry that proves the Thomas Caine series is still going strong 7 books in. The author provided an early review copy for my immense reading pleasure in return for this slightly late review, an honest reflection of my enjoyment and respect for Warren's role as an outstanding writer of exciting military fiction.
This was such a fast-paced action novel and I loved it. It definitely gave Mission Impossible vibes with a touch of John Wick. Thomas Caine is an FBI agent, who is ready to retire and go on the vacation he and his girlfriend have put off for too long. However, his girlfriend has some work business to wrap up so she tells him to go ahead and she will meet him there. But on the day of his departure, an act of terrorism puts 2 people he cares about in the crossfire. Now he will stop at nothing to being those behind it to justice. He will destroy anyone and everyone that gets in his way to find whoever is responsible. Like I said, it was like reading an action movie. I cant wait to see what this author has up his sleeve for the next book. Highly recommend for an action thriller fan.
This installment finds Caine in DC with girlfriend/boss Rebecca Freeling mulling over what's next for him. He's considering ending his CIA career and being more normal. Spending time with Rebecca & his deceased friend's son Sean.
However, before the thought even becomes a reality, the building Rebecca is in for a meeting is blown up and someone close to Caine is collateral damage. This cannot go unpunished and although he promises Rebecca he won't disappear, he doesn't fill her in on his plans so she isn't compromised.
The trail to the domestic bombers leads to NJ and then to the San Bernadino mountains in California to a neo-Nazi group -Silver Talons. He's going to take them down, alone if he has to and in the aftermath there is a collaborator back in DC.
Lots of action, and of course a cliffhanger as to what happens to Caine and his job at the CIA.
Tom Caine has realized that he wants to spend more time with Rebecca and Sean. This means changing his job. But fate intervenes and those he loves are put in a very bad situation. After Tom finds out, he is out for revenge. This leads him to an even bigger conspiracy with white supremist group, a dead former FBI agent, a current FBI agent after his killer and crooked members of a sheriff department. Tom won't go down without a fight. This is tricky because he is CIA and working in the US which is a clear violation of his job duties. That doesn't matter to him. The book ends with a few major unanswered questions which I dislike - only reason for a 4 star rating. I received an advanced reader copy and am voluntarily leaving this review.
Recovering from a gruelling mission overseas, CIA Paramilitary Officer Thomas Caine returns home, eager to resume his relationship with Rebecca Freeling. Even if it means leaving his career behind. But fate has other ideas....
This is a fast-paced read, it's action-packed and I was quickly pulled into this story. A tale of conspiracy and revenge. There were a few loose ends left hanging, but I still enjoyed this book. This is the first book that I've read by the author, but I will be looking out for his books from now on.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #BoldwoodBooks and the author #AndrewWarren for my ARC of #HuntingGround in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to @netgalley @andrewwarrenbooks and @boldwoodbooks for the ARC in return for my honest review.
So this is book 7 in the #ThomasCaine series and I must've been living under a rock because it is the first time reading anything by this author, and I'm gutted because it is exactly my cup of tea! Although it is book 7, I didn't have any problem following along. This book was fast paced, adrenaline-fuelled and full of action. The pages just kept on turning themselves! The characters were great and I really liked Caine's character; he won't go down without a fight! If you enjoy a CIA thriller, then this is one for you!
After completing a successful mission overseas, Thomas Caine is on his way back to the US, looking forward to meeting up with Rebecca again. A vacation for them both seems a good way to plan their future, but before it can begin disaster strikes and Caine’s world is turned upside down. Bent on revenge, Caine searches out those responsible to exact vengeance, regardless of the consequences.
Full of action from the start the tension doesn’t let up, and the thrills don’t stop coming. Lots of twists and turns lead Caine deeper into action and danger – easy to read and impossible to put down! Highly recommended.
Thanks to Net Galley and Boldwood Books for an ARC for my honest review
If you like excitement then this is the book for you. You are dropped into the action on the first page. Then unlike some books that tend to slow down it just keeps going. Caine has been over seas and comes home to find the federal building blown up. His close friend is killed rescuing his girlfriend from an elevator after the explosion. Caine is determined to find who is responsible for the bombing and are trying to put the blame on his dead friend.
I highly recommend this book you will not want to put it down till you have finished it. It is well written and there is never a slow down in the book.
If you have read each book in the Thomas Caine series, Hunting Ground is one of Warren’s best in series. This author's imagination and writing skills are the two of the best reasons to read Hunting Ground!
Know that if Hunting Ground is your first foray in this series, it won’t be your last. There is so much fast-paced action that just doesn’t stop. Imagine your stellar self agreeing with, urging this CIA-sent killer to find the vilest villains, to end them. Tom Caine has such a strong sense of justice … no matter the cost. And in this book, there is so much cost! He goes way beyond boundaries.
Thomas Caine takes on the so-called Silver Talon white supremacist group in a Mission Impossible-like hunt, after their terrorist attack kills a young man he thought of as a son.Caine risks everything to bring his unique brand of justice in Andrew Warren's Hunting Ground, as he joins forces with FBI Special Agent AJ Zavala who's got her own agenda.
You won't want to miss this exciting character-led adventure that gripped me firmly by the imagination throughout, with its many twists and turns plus a believable finale. Hunting Ground is totally unputdownable - get it now!
Hunting Ground: The heart-pounding BRAND NEW instalment to Andrew Warren's thriller series for 2026 (A Thomas Caine Thriller Book 7), my second read from author Andrew Warren, after reading White Tiger (A Thomas Caine Thriller Book 6), a 386-page terrorism thriller that grabbed me and kept me reading until finished in a single setting. “I received a complementary Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author with Cold Kill already on my TBR list. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Hunting Ground by Andrew Warren is the 7th book in the Thomas Caine series but it can be read as a stand-alone. This is a book that will have your heart pounding because of the action-packed chapters and have you wondering "how is he going to get out of this situation?" I received a copy of this book from the author, and I always review every book that I read. This book had me turning pages well into the night.
The plot and the characters are well developed. This is a book well worth reading. Enjoy.
Best Caine book to date. I loved seeing Caine unhinged. He can't help himself but want revenge despite a promise to his wife and the consequences that will follow. To me this book runs revenge with some vigilante feels. Caine does a lot of illegal things for what he thinks is the right reason (though when he does it for the government it's fine and they don't mind at all?). I find these kinds of character stories the most fascinating and can't wait for the next book to find out what the aftermath of all this will be.
I have not read all of the Thomas Caine books, but a few, and they can easily be read as standalones, so no worries there. If it's action you are after, then these Caine Thrillers are it. It is action from start to finish, and is it OTT? Of course it is, it would not be very exciting if it weren't. Very well written and a must for people who like the Bond-style stories. I want to thank Andrew Warren for the ARC volume, and this is my personal take on this book.
Hunting Ground by Andrew Warren is a fast-paced Thomas Caine thriller. Action-packed from beginning to the end - it was like watching an action movie and it kept me on the edge of my seat. Unputdownable. Highly recommended for thriller lovers. I'm so glad I got the ARC from Boldwood Books via Netgalley. This is my honest feedback
Andrew Warren, created another intriguing book in the Thomas Caine Series. Was not able to put the book down. Characters from previous books and their interactions. New plot and a few twists and turns. Highly recommend.
I didn’t realise that this was 7th book in the Thomas Cain Thiller anyway I enjoyed this book. Good storyline
They want a war. Caine will give them one…
Recovering from a grueling mission overseas, CIA Paramilitary Officer Thomas Caine returns home, eager to resume his relationship with Rebecca Freeling. Even if it means leaving his career behind.
An action-packed thriller with a great storyline and an outstanding cast of well-developed characters. A page turning read with plenty of action, conspiracy, revenge, and twists/turns. Many plots exist with results that are unpredictable. Caine is totally out for revenge in this adrenaline packed thriller. Very enjoyable read that I totally recommend. Bring on more of these great thrillers.
Really good read as Caine goes to find the people responsible for the Death of his former partner Sean as he swore to protect him and feels responsible for his Death . Little does he know it reaches to the higher Government after they cause a building where Sean is on a peaceful march . Very high octaine thriller and Caine never stops until his goal is reached . Always a good read .
A great action story! I take a different view than most readers. Caine gets his man in the end but at what cost? He ruined his career, when justice could have been served in court. He ruined or damaged his personal relationship for revenge. He became, judge, jury and executioner knowing the person he was avenging wouldn't have wanted it done that way.
Another great story with Tom doing his usual thing of almost getting killed but prevailing in the end. Maybe not quite the thrill ride of some previous ones for my liking but still very enjoyable as I particularly like his brand of justice and in this case he had a very personal reason.
There aren’t many writers that grab your attention, create a clear image of the scene and context of the story whilst keep you turning the page eager to find out what comes next, then suddenly you read the book and you want more. Andrew Warren is definitely a gifted writer, read everything he has ever written, you won’t regret it…..
All Caine wanted when he came home from overseas was to be with Rebecca again. Then terrorists bombed a federal building and someone dear to him died. Caine goes onto a warpath inside the US. A book written like an action movie, a real page-turner.
Cain is just as good as Bourne, Rapp, and Coleman.
He is always in the middle of a situation. The action, characters, and suspense keep you reading and engaged. Enjoyed this one just like all the others. Masterfully written can't stop once you start reading.
