Jodi Taylor is the internationally bestselling author of the Chronicles of St Mary's series, the story of a bunch of disaster prone individuals who investigate major historical events in contemporary time. Do NOT call it time travel! She is also the author of the Time Police series - a St Mary's spinoff and gateway into the world of an all-powerful, international organisation who are NOTHING like St Mary's. Except, when they are.
Alongside these, Jodi is known for her gripping supernatural thrillers featuring Elizabeth Cage together with the enchanting Frogmorton Farm series - a fairy story for adults.
Born in Bristol and now living in Gloucester (facts both cities vigorously deny), she spent many years with her head somewhere else, much to the dismay of family, teachers and employers, before finally deciding to put all that daydreaming to good use and write a novel. Over twenty books later, she still has no idea what she wants to do when she grows up.
Smallhope and Pennyroyal are back in a second instalment of the St Mary's universe spin off series. Pennyroyal's sister died a number of years ago, or did she...? Surprisingly, a quiet life doesn't exist in Jodi Taylor's alternate universe and the pair are soon swept into a series of events necessitating working with both the Time Police and St Mary's as well as solving some of their own little problems.
As a long term fan of St Mary's, the Time Police, and Jodi Taylor in general I really appreciate this exploration of two of the most entertaining and likeable occasional characters in the series. I actually enjoyed this book more than The Ballad of Smallhope and Pennyroyal and I think it's because now the background has been established in the first book, Taylor was able to create an overarching plotline for this title which works really well and is carefully plotted and paced. Just when we think things are sorted out, something else occurs to muddy the waters, and Taylor has left things well and truly set up for a third book in the series.
Although we get a small amount of Pennyroyal's perspective, it was nice to see Smallhope's competence displayed in some solo missions (despite a number of "here is where I made a mistake" moments). It's always fun to see other recurring characters pop up (including Ellis and Herodotus) as well as references to events in other books (this particular book links in at times with the latest Time Police novel too). For this reason, someone unfamiliar with Jodi Taylor's series would struggle to read this book as a standalone. You would certainly need to read The Ballad of Smallhope and Pennyroyal to get enough background but reading at least the Time Police books would help get the most out of it.
Having said that, I found the vibe of this book more similar to Taylor's Elizabeth Cage series, which is totally separate to the world of St Mary's. I think it's the male/female protagonists who are partners in crime, as well as the structure of the story. Readers who prefer the Cage series to St Mary's might find Smallhope and Pennyroyal an enjoyable alternative.
A satisfying, fun read that I utterly enjoyed. Thank you so much to the publisher for reaching out with this ARC, and to Netgalley for facilitating it.
Prior to the first book in this Smallhope & Pennyroyal series, I had only read a couple of Jodi Taylor's traditional Christmas novellas, but never a full length novel by her. I enjoyed the shorter versions and was impressed with the author's writing style, but I was reticent about reading anything else from the "Chronicles of St Mary's" or "Time Police" without going back to the very beginning of the series. The Smallhope and Pennyroyal origin story offered me an ideal opportunity to read a full-length Jodi Taylor novel without feeling that I was missing out on essential background information by dropping in mid-series. I loved that first book, so there was never any doubt that I was going to return for book two.
Should any other prospective readers find themselves faced with a similar dilemma, they can take heart in the fact that Jodi Taylor has written a short précis at the beginning of "A Family Affair", so that new readers have the essential background information. Although this does mean that you can happily go into this book without having read "The Ballad of Smallhope and Pennyroyal", that series opener is so good that I would seriously suggest that you read it first anyway.
"A Family Affair" is also a great read. It is a rollicking adventure with action, mystery, thrills, suspense and ample amounts of rib-tickling witticisms along the way. I strongly suspect that there will be at least one more book in this spin-off series and I, for one, will most certainly be coming back for it.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for supplying an ARC in return for an honest review.
A Family Affair is exactly the kind of wild, witty escapade you hope for when diving back into Jodi Taylor’s universe. Lady Amelia Smallhope and the ever‑enigmatic Pennyroyal return in a story that blends danger, humour, and sheer narrative joy in that signature Taylor style.
Fresh off a near‑fatal shooting, Smallhope is hoping for rest, sunshine, and margaritas — which, of course, means chaos is about to descend. One unexpected phone call later, she and Pennyroyal are thrown into a mess that’s personal, perilous, and tied to the murkier corners of his past. The setup is deliciously tense, and the payoff is even better.
Smallhope remains a standout narrator: sharp, self‑aware, and wonderfully chaotic in the most endearing way. Her voice carries the story with warmth and wit, even as the stakes climb higher and the danger becomes very real. Pennyroyal, as always, is a perfect foil — charming, infuriating, and hiding more layers than he’ll ever admit.
The plot moves at a cracking pace, full of twists, snappy dialogue, and that delightful sense of “things are bad, so let’s make them worse” that defines this series. Taylor balances humour and heart with impressive ease, delivering moments that are laugh‑out‑loud funny alongside scenes that genuinely hit hard.
Whether you’re a long‑time fan of The Chronicles of St Mary’s or newly obsessed with Smallhope’s adventures, this instalment is a treat — energetic, clever, and packed with character.
With thanks to Jodi Taylor, the publisher and netgalley for the ARC
I received a free eARC for a free and unbiased opinion. Smallhope and Pennyroyal is a spinoff from one of my favourite time-travelling series featuring a bunch of chaotic and tea loving historians who of course travel through time. Smallhope and Pennyroyal are the time travelling bounty hunters who help Max with her many disasters, but you don’t have to read the St Mary Chronicles or the first book in this series to enjoy this book. The book focuses on Pennyroyal and the circumstances around his sister’s death as Smallhope’s ongoing feud with her sister-in-law. We see a softer side to Pennyroyal with his interactions with his sister which quickly changes to his terrifying, scary, violent side ramping up the tension in the book. There are leaps through time as expected in a time travel and confusing to keep track of as expected with a book based in the world of St Mary’s. There is even a little trip to the future, and I loved Smallhope’s interaction with the Ellis from the Time police. I did feel a little disappointed that in a book ( and world full of strong women) misogyny still exists in the future and there is bit of violence ( off page) against women that may be uncomfortable to read. But as usual I loved the face paced action, the comedy, the complicated time travel and a more heart-warming view of Smallhope and Pennyroyal relationship. Perfect for Fans St Mary Chronicles or any time-travelling series, sci-fi with a huge dose of humour
Smallhope and Pennyroyal are back, and the action starts immediately. The title, A Family Affair, is very appropriate, as they are thrown by news relating to Pennyroyal's sister and rocked by an event that will send them on separate paths. Also keeping with the family theme, Smallhope's beloved nephew George is threatened, and familiar adversaries find a way to invade Starlings.
This was a twisty, turny, and somewhat shocking ride, as the very trust between Smallhope and Pennyroyal is threatened. I love that we get to see Dr. Bairstow from St. Mary's, and he is, as always, steady as a rock. Major Ellis from the Time Police also appears, and we even get a little news about Grint!
This is Book Two in this series, and it can stand alone, but I would definitely recommend reading the first and getting the full story of Smallhope and Pennyroyal, with a lot of St. Mary's and the Time Police thrown in. You won't regret it. I loved every minute of this book, even though it sometimes broke my heart. As often happens in a Jodi Taylor book, it ends with a bang and a cryptic message loaded with questions. I can't wait for the next one to find out the answers.
I received a free copy from the publisher via Netgalley. My review is voluntary and the opinions expressed are my own.
This is the second book in the Smallhope and Pennyroyal series and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. However I wouldn’t recommend starting with these books first but rather, at the very least the Time Police series. Once again we’re briefly reunited with some of our friends from St.Mary’s and, the Time Police, as well as various miscreants from the Smallhope clan. There are even elements reminiscent, though totally unrelated, of the Elizabeth Cage series with the clinic at Hatton House. Smallhope and Pennyroyal are, due to circumstance, currently taking some time apart , which in itself is a bit unsettling. Surely this can’t be the end of a beautiful partnership? Plus, shockingly, Pennyroyal even tries to kill Smallhope! As usual there are several storylines occurring at once, with some obligatory pod hopping up and down the timeline There are sad moments, action scenes and also a touch of the madcap humour that we’ve come to expect with Jodi Taylor’s books. Throughout it all the theme of family persists, both actual and made. Lady Amelia certainly comes into her own whether dealing with Herodotus or the undesirable elements within her own family. She was always capable but without Pennyroyal by her side life just isn’t the same. To top it all we’re left with a cryptic little message leaving things nicely set up for the next instalment.
A Family Affair is the second book in the Smallhope & Pennyroyal series, a spin-off from the hugely popular Chronicles of St Mary’s series. It begins immediately after the first, with Amelia still recovering from the shooting. Events conspire to divide the dynamic duo by targeting their families, and their future together seems uncertain as they race to discover the truth.
This is another rip-roaring adventure from Jodi Taylor. I was very excited to received an arc copy and I wasn’t disappointed! Smallhope and Pennyroyal are a fantastic team, and their chemistry is so well written it makes you want to hop in a pod with them and head off on an adventure. As always, the broad range of humour, escapades and emotion is very well done, and the story moves along at a good pace, keeping you guessing at every turn.
There were appearances by some of our favourite St Mary’s and Time Police characters which ties the book in marvellously with the rest of the Jodiverse, and much as I love the two together, it was great to see Amelia facing things on her own for a while. I also liked the development of George’s character in this book, he’s becoming a favourite!
This was a delightful read and I literally cannot wait for the next in the series!
Whenever a favourite author brings out a new book there is always a touch of apprehension. Will the book be as good as previous novels or have the ideas dried up? I am pleased to say that Jodi Taylor is on form and does not disappoint.
Lady Amelia Smallhope is the main narrator in ‘A Family Affair’ and naturally as a traveller in time (she does remind us never to call it time travel in front of Dr. Bairstow) things are a little twisted. Family is very much the focus here both those of Smallhope along with a very close relative of Pennyroyal (will we ever discover his first name?) but it also the idea that sometimes family is more than blood relations.
There are cameos from certain people, some in person others mentioned along with events that are alluded to, from within the universe of St. Marys and the Time Police which aids the narrative and shows us what a complex and intriguing world Ms. Taylor has created.
I think this is a stronger novel than ‘Ballard’ as the characters are more developed. The ending also sets up the next book very nicely.
A solid 5*.
Thank you to the author, Headline and Netgally for the ARC.
After adoring the Ballad of Smallhope and Pennyroyal, I started on the Chronicles of St. Mary’s.
Returning to Smallhope and Pennyroyal was not only a blast of fresh air, it showed just how far Ms Taylor has come in her writing. There’s nothing wrong with the earlier books, but this has a vibrancy about it that makes you live in a whole new world for a while. It would be trite to say I couldn’t put it down, but I did so when absolutely necessary, for bodily requirements and to give my brain a rest. You want a twisty, fast-paced, probably accurate historically, family drama with added Time Police? This is it.
I finished it the next day, and sat, cogitating while my brain went over the final events, and thought…what happened to X? So I leafed back to where we last encountered X, and satisfied myself that they weren’t really a loose end.
And then I turned back to the beginning and started again. I haven’t done that to any book since I read Lord of the Rings in the 1970s. And it didn’t let me down. It was just as enjoyable the second time, and like LOTR, I picked up on all sorts of nuances. I wouldn’t say I’d missed them, but I hadn’t given them the attention they deserved. Beautiful character studies of bystanders, and so on. Someone else who might have their own series, maybe?
This series, this book, is just so good, I fear the next ten in the St.Mary’s series will seem quite tame. But by then, maybe S and P will have another book out. Don’t rush it, Ms Taylor! They deserve perfection. Again.
Due for publication 6th August 2026 This follows straight on from the first Smallhope & Pennyroyal book with Lady Amelia Smallhope still recovering from a near-fatal shooting. She’s at home, keeping an eye on the estate (Starlings) and her nephew, George. She’s looking forward to a quiet time with master-butler, Pennyroyal, who has acquired a cottage just a short walk away from Starlings, over the fields. Pennyroyal is her business partner, but oh so much more… until… he gets a phone call he never expected. His sister, killed in the Middle East years ago when she was in the army, has been found, traumatised, but alive. Smallhope gives him the space he needs to help his sister’s rehab, but there is something seriously wrong somewhere, and Smallhope & Pennyroyal have to figure out what, and why, and how to fix things. This is Jodi Taylor’s usual mysterious, enthralling story with the return of much-loved characters. Expect, time-travel, family problems, a bit of gut-wrenching, some soul searching, a daring rescue, and a little bit of help from St Mary’s medical department. I had an advance reading copy from Netgalley, and loved it. I will probably go and put the audiobook on pre-order for a second ‘read.’
This is the second book in this series, which is an offshoot of the St. Mary's series. I can't recommend these books highly enough. I've read all of the St. Mary's series - in order - several times, and was so excited to see another book featuring Smallhope and Pennyroyal.
Smallhope is Lady Amelia Smallhope, and her partner-in-crime is Pennyroyal, who is trained in being a butler. He is excellent at mixing drinks and lethal with almost anything.
The two of them are talented bounty hunters (aka recovery agents), which is how they make their living. Various characters from St Mary's and the Time Police also made appearances, which was delightful. The book can be a little hard to follow at times as the characters and the plot are moving back and forth in time and in different timelines. I am very much hoping for more books in this series.
I received an e-arc from the publisher Headline and voluntarily read and reviewed it. All opinions are my own.
A Family Affair is the second book in Jodi Taylor’s Smallhope and Pennyroyal series.
Bounty hunting continues, Smallhope’s sister-in-law Caroline is sending threatening letters from Italy and Pennyroyal’s long-lost sister has returned.
Both Smallhope and Pennyroyal are burdened by their own vulnerabilities: loved ones they are desperate to protect. These deep emotional ties influence their actions exposing them to danger.
This was a fabulous story and a cryptic message delivered in the book’s final pages has left me anxiously anticipating the next one in the series.
Thank you to NetGalley and to Headline for knowing how much I would love A Family Affair and inviting me to read an eARC in exchange for an honest review. Seeing it was a new Jodi Taylor book, I immediately prioritised reading this!
I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Jodi Taylor's latest is the second Smallhope and Pennyroyal novel. I don't want to give too much away but someone from Pennyroyal's past returns and our bounty hunter (ahem, recovery agent) duo find themselves going their separate ways. Is this it for their partnership or will they find their way back to each other? Full of action, time travel, treachery, Time Police and evil machinations. As always, I read this with great urgency, pulled along by the drama and then hit with moments of exquisite hilarity. Another excellent addition from Jodi Taylor. I was delighted to find out what happened next to Lady Amelia and her deadly butler partner in crime (and in other things that they prefer to keep quiet).
A Family Affair is the second of the Stanhope and Pennyroyal series. Although I would recommend reading each series in order, any of the books can be read on their own. Jodi always gives a who's who at the beginning of every book. Jodi Taylor is one of my 'must have' authors and I've read everything she's ever written. Her stories are so funny and easy to read. The way she takes history and makes it accessible, interesting and humorous in a very readable way is remarkable. Her knowledge and memory is amazing. She often makes reference to characters from her other books and their travels through time. And there are a lot of books! If you want a really enjoyable read that is intelligent but not too cerebral definitely try Jodi Taylor's books. You'll be hooked! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advance copy. All opinions are my own
This book takes place moments after the last book ended, when Lady Amelia Smallhope suggested to Pennyroyal that they steal the Crown Jewels (and replace them 24 hours later). As a recap.
So, they are planning their next heist, whilst denying any and all knowledge of the identity of the person who tied to kill Smallhope when questioned by the police, when Pennyroyal gets a call which changes everything for both of them. Could this be the end of the dream team?
Another fantastic and thrilling timey wimey adventure from Jodi Taylor. Set within the St. Mary's world, this series focuses on two notorious bounty hunters, Smallhope and Pennyroyal. There's no rest for the wicked and as well as continuing some of the plot threads from the first book and the Smallhope family, A Family Affair is full of unexpected events which shifts the attention to Pennyroyal's background. And then there is that marvellously cryptic and teasing ending which surely means there is more to come in this series. I'm never disappointed with a Jodi Taylor book and she's the absolute queen of pulling the rug out from under the reader's feet.
Thank you to NetGalley and Headline for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Following the events at the end of "The Ballad of Smallhope and Pennyroyal" the two bounty hunters are plotting a heist for when Lady Amelia is properly back on her feet, when they are interrupted by an important phone call. Smallhope had been dealing with her own family affairs in book one already, but now it's not just her relatives that seem to push a wedge between the dream team, because Pennyroyal is bound up in family affairs too.
With her usual wit, Jodi Taylor has written another fun story set in the St Mary's universe that not only hints at another sequel to this series, but also at what's going to happen next for St Mary's and that there is trouble at TPHQ (I'm so looking forward to finding out what this is all about).
As with all Jodi Taylor books I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Turns out I haven't actually read the 1st in the series but I have read all the St Mary's books and the time police ones so I wasn't lost.
I do really enjoy the characters of Pennyroyal and Smallhope. I like that they're quite well to do but still shift characters. I like the humour in these books too. I like the time travel element of these books, although there wasn't that much in this one. The book was full of suspense and intrigue and action so it was a fast paced read. Also that ending. Now I've got to wait to find out what that was all about. Will definitely read the next one
I read A Family Affair without having read the first book in the series, and while I could tell there were a few things I had missed, it never made me feel completely lost or out of place. Jodi Taylor does a great job pulling the reader into the story with warmth, humor, and engaging characters. It was an enjoyable read on its own, and it definitely made me curious enough to go back and see what I missed.
I received this book from NetGalley. Thank you to Jodi Taylor and Headline. All opinions are my own.
Another amazing story from Taylor who just seems to get better every time. Smallhope and Pennyroyal and such wonderful characters and this story told from each perspective at times is just wonderful. A mystery and adventure but with loads of humor and heartbreak threaded through, I couldn't put it down but didn't want it to end.
Full disclosure - I received a copy of the book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
A delightful addition to the St Mary’s Universe (which should be a thing). Amelia and Pennyroyal are back, fighting the baddies and saving their families, at least the parts worth saving. They are separated for most of the book, sadly, but Pennyroyal has to care for his sister, who was presumed dead, and Amelia has her young nephew, the Earl, to worry about. All of Jodi Taylor’s signature humor, foreshadowing, cliffhangers, and emotion. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc!
Jodi Taylor is my favourite author. I always expect a 5 star read and was not dissapointed with this second book in the Smallhope and Pennyroyal partnership. I love the way you get glimpses of both the Time Police and St Mary's although most of the book is set in her estate - Starlings. I thought this book was a bit darker than other books but it was always very very readable. I felt exhausted for Amelia as she seemed to be recovering from accidents and beatings and wanted her to have a good rest.
Always a pleasure reading a Jodi Taylor book. There really is no one who has quite her same style of writing. I’m enjoying this Pennyroyal and Smallhope series. There is plenty of mischief and misfortune to keep me hooked. Looking forward to the next one and to see how the storyline plays out. Once again, Jodi has kept me up late at night reading and thoroughly enjoying myself!
Another great read from one of my favourite authors. I already had the first book in this series on my kindle but had not read it. So I have now read both books and pleased to say they were very good. I liked the links back to the Time Police and St.Marys books as well. You have got everything in this book, murder, assassins, romance, tension, lots of drama and laugh out loud moments. This book took me to other worlds/times and I did not want it to end!! Smallhope and Pennyroyal are a great team - I look forward to reading more about their adventures.
