This pacy psychological thriller unfolded from the POVs of two deeply flawed female doppelgangers.
TW: Domestic violence and abuse.
FULL DISCLOSURE: I usually stay faaaar away from domestic violence/abuse "thriller" books.
Kudos to talented author AJ DeVine for penning a new, refreshing, and powerful spin on this trope.
Both protagonists were authentic, with small quirks and vulnerabilities that made their struggles relatable and immersive.
The storyline's sense of foreboding and suspense was palpable, set against a vividly described village backdrop that added depth to the narrative.
One of the book's final twists was gasp-worthy.
The "Window" in the book's title most likely represented the isolation and entrapment that frequently accompany domestic violence victims.
Not sure where the "Girl" in the title came from, as there was no girl in this book.
WHY NOT 5 STARS?
The ending felt rushed and contrived.
I listened to the audiobook, expertly narrated by two of my favorite narrators: Tamsin Kennard and Stephanie Cannon
Both narrators gave outstanding performances.

A doppelgänger, a mysterious reclusive photographer, and countless secrets and lies come together creating a thriller that you won't be able to stop reading. This book was one crazy ride! Just when I thought I knew where the plot was going, an unpredictable twist would occur. I enjoyed the different perspectives and was continually trying to figure out which I could believe. I was hooked from start to finish. The story was gripping all the way to the shocking epilogue. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC.

Trust me when ai tell you that you will not be able to put this book down. I started it on the train in the morning, and finished the same day. I was immediately hooked on this story of 2 women who look exactly the same who meet in Cornwall. While they might be each other’s doppelgängers, the similarities end there. Their lives are so different but an instant connection is there.
I love how emotional and suspenseful this book was. Told through the eyes of both women, you never quite know what was going to happen next. The ending was very clever and made me smile.

Do you have a doppelgänger? Chances are actually higher than you think, according to science!
In "The Girl in the Window", A.J. McDine takes this premise and runs with it, turning it into a catchy psychological thriller. After splitting up with her fiancé, Laura unexpectedly finds herself alone on the vacation she planned for both of them. When she sees a picture by a prominent local photographer in a window, she is startled: the woman in the photo looks exactly like her. Intrigued and happy for the distraction, Laura tries to find out more about the woman, whose name is Alana - and when their paths cross, both of their lives will change forever.
This was an enjoyable, if a tad predictable, psychological thriller. Though there was a serious and dark undertone, it felt more like a popcorn thriller - maybe because the pacing was a bit off, with a very slow start and a rushed ending. Nevertheless, the story drew me in and held my interest, even though I cannot confirm that there really is a "jaw-dropping twist," as advertised - in fact, the story unfolded just as you'd expect it to, down to the epilogue, except that the two "girls" (who are really grown women who shouldn't be called girls!) made many, many more questionable choices than you would think. As a result, the characters both grated on me - Laura with her stalker behavior, Alana with her not very credible backstory.
While this book didn't wow me as much as the blurb may have promised, and the premise and twists felt all too familiar at times, the writing was propulsive and enjoyable, making this the perfect palate cleanser. A.J. McDine is an author whose work I'd read again.
I listened to the audiobook, expertly narrated by Tamsin Kennard and Stephanie Cannon, who both gave outstanding performances and really embodied their characters, even when struggling with the other's accent.

Wow! The Girl in the Window by AJ McDine was so action packed that it had me on the edge of my seat from page 1!!! It had many jaw dropping twists and the ending was really twisty! Imagine seeing someone that looks identical to you. Would you want to meet her? Talk to her? I would’ve until I read this book. Lol If you’re new to this author like I was, you must read this very addictive thriller! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this release in exchange for my honest review. This book will have you absolutely screaming, first in confusion, then in frustration, and finally in disbelief as the plot unfolds. It begins with the kind of mystery that makes you question everyone’s motives, leading you down a path of speculation and suspicion. Soon after, you will find yourself yelling at the characters for their questionable decision-making skills and complete lack of strategic thinking. By the third act, there is an almost comical sense of resignation as you realize that the chaos you feared is, in fact, inevitable.
The ending, however, redeems the mayhem in the best possible way. It is twisty, unexpected, and somehow manages to pull every scattered thread into a satisfying conclusion. I recommend this book to readers who love stories that make you want to reach into the pages, shake a character by the shoulders, and beg them to use just a little bit of logic. It is wild, entertaining, and the kind of ride you will not forget anytime soon.

This is a 3.5 star review for the audio book, narrated by Tamsin Kennard and Stephanie Cannon.
The book starts from the point of view of Laura, each chapter labelled as such so we know its her thoughts and feelings we're hearing. She's on holiday in Cornwall having just split with her boyfriend, going on her own having booked the holiday as a couple. Laura is moping around, trying not to be miserable and find something to do to take her mind off Vinny when she see's an photo of her on display. She has no memory of the picture being taken, then on closer inspection she realises its not her. She has a Doppleganger. She discovers the photographer is Marcus a local chap c and finds his address to try and meet her 'twin'.
We then flip perspectives to Alana, the doppleganger, hearing about her life with Marcus and how everything isn't as perfect as Laura seems to think.
This is a well written story with a very good and satisfying ending which had a lovely twist to it. As with any story where a doppleganger is mentioned, you're just waiting to the moment where they agree to swap places. You know its coming and whilst the logic didn't really hold up for me in the reason for trading places, I did enjoy how its was done and was pleasantly surprised with what followed.
The narration was enjoyable and emotive. I particularly liked have two voice actors which played really well with Alana sounding completely different to Laura whilst they looked exactly the same. They're male voice's were well done too, not just gruff, deep monotony, but held subtlety in their tone.
Overall an enjoyable story with some very nice twists. 3.5 stars

This is a difficult book to review, because I don't want to spoil it for future readers. (I'm disappointed to see that some reviewers are writing toooo much!) So, I'll just write that once started, it's a book that is hard to put it down! I recommend it.

Loved this one!
A fetch - in folklore - is much like a doppelganger but thought to be an omen of impending death when someone comes across theirs. Imagine being away on vacation and coming face to face with your double - so much so that you feel like you're seeing a photo of yourself that you know you never took. The main character, Laura, is faced with this scenario when she finds her double, Alana. It seems fun and intriguing at first - but is there truth in the folklore?
A quick read, easy listen! I devoured it in a day and a half because I needed to know how it would end. Highly recommend for fans of The Housemaid or Love, Mom.
I listened to the audiobook and the narrators were great 4/5 stars. Easy to listen to. Great speed, inflection. accents and pronunciations were done well.

I love an AJ McDine book, but even better is an audiobook, and better than that is one narrated by Tamsin Kennard and Stephanie Cannon!
This was a fun read, the narrators make you feel invested from the start. I had no idea where this was going, but I love those books! Some characters are unlikeable but it says a lot about the writing!

I'm 70% in. And things are finally happening. Idk from the synopsis I thought maybe they will meet early on in the book and weird, crazy(or just anything) will start happening. Turns out it took 70% of the book TO FINALLY HAPPEN SOMETHING AFTER THEIR MEETING(They also meet veeeeery late in the book considering how the blurb/synopsis is pitched).
I think the book is pitched very wrong and gave false expectations.
Regardless it was fast read, I liked the writing.

Excellent story from start to finish! I had no idea where this doppelgänger fiasco was heading but it was soon revealed. With alternating points of view, it was great to hear the story told from Laura & Alana’s views. I was curious throughout this story were they both on the same page, or were there ulterior motives lingering. One thing that is evident from early on, was Marcus is one of the most unhinged MMCs that I’ve read about. I listened to the audiobook & Tamsin Kennard and Stephanie Cannon did a great job narrating this story! If you enjoy well written domestic thrillers, with secrets revealed until the very end - I would recommend this one! Thank you Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for an advanced listening copy.

It's really difficult to put down, once you start!!!
The synopsis made me curious to read this book. Two women, who look alike, one with secrets to hide...It was too good a plotline to ignore. So I started reading this and let me say, it was much more than what I expected!
The story follows both the perspectives of Laura and her doppelganger Alana. But instead of alternating perspectives, the author decided to keep a bit of surprise. The first part of the book was purely from Laura's perspective. She sees a woman, married to a famous man, in a large house, who looks exactly like her. The obsession that Laura feels to meet her and her reactions to Alana was discussed here.
But it was only in the second part that we get perspective from Alana. Where she narrated how her life was.
The best part of this story came from its writing style. I wanted to pause reading and continue with other works, but it just stopped me. Even when I was able to take a break, the story and its characters kept coming up and finally I decided to read again. So yes, it was pretty addictive!
The ending wasn't what I expected but it was good. Still I felt that the ending was so fast.
Now, let me conclude by saying that, I've read this book during a rainy day, and it was the perfect reading experience!!!

This is the 2nd book I've read by this author and she doesn't disappoint.
I enjoyed the writing style for this book and liked the pace of it.

Beautiful setting , sinister storyline. Fantastic narration. I don’t think McDine ever truly disappoints.

I liked the whole concept of an identical twin , the small chapters and the hint in the end of each chapter didnt let me leave it from my hands. The plot twist was very good and unpredictable , it reminded me a lot of a movie , meaning the descriptions were very good and the character developments kept you there .

The Girl In The Window by AJ McDine, after catching her boyfriend Vinny with another woman she decides to go on their planned holiday without him in regardless of his pleading she tells him not to contact her. She already has past traumas due to her dad and his extra marital affairs in the affected had on her life. When she arrives at the rental she goes out to get something to eat and while walking on the high street sees a photo of a woman that looks strikingly like herself. then when she goes into the local market a woman tells her “oh I see, Marcus let you out.” Laura doesn’t know what to make of this comment because she has no idea who Marcus is and later that night when she sees another photo of the woman and learns the photographer’s name is Marcus, this is the beginning of her obsession to meet her doppelgänger. as Alana Adams is a very elusive woman Laura resorts to investigating and then fakery and fraud until she finally finds her look-alike. They soon become friends, this is when Laura learns from observing her new friend Alana that she is being abused, not to mention Marcus is gaslighting her and so much more something Alana reluctantly tells her new friend.. When what Laura believes is their plan to get Alana free really only puts Laura in danger! Laura can’t help but to wonder did Alana do this on purpose and secondly will she live to find out, if so why? AJ McDine is one of those riders who can take a well-known trope and make it look like it was her idea in the first place her books are holy original twisty with such satisfying endings they have some authors whose books I know will be wash, rinse, spin and repeat like every other author just writing to make a dollar but you can truly tell miss McDine does it because she’s talented and definitely has stories to tell. A J McDine delivered a twisted psychological thriller! The Girl in the Window followed a woman who became fixated on a mysterious girl she spotted through a neighbor’s window. At first, the girl’s life looked picture-perfect, but as their worlds start to overlap, it was clear that nothing was as it seemed.
This was my second book by McDine. The first one I picked up was No One I Knew—a fast-paced, cleverly plotted psychological thriller that I couldn’t put down. Just like that one, The Girl in the Window proved to be just as captivating.
McDine writes quick, twist-packed psychological thrillers that are easy to fall into. Her stories feature short, punchy chapters, realistic characters, and plenty of secrets and surprises that keep the tension high. She also balances suspense with emotional depth, making her books feel both fast-paced and relatable.
I was instantly drawn in by the eerie premise of The Girl in the Window and that unsettling hook about the mysterious girl who looked just like the narrator. The story moved quickly, with short, sharp chapters and a steady undercurrent of tension that made it easy to keep turning the pages. I liked how the twists kept me guessing and how McDine captured the creeping sense that nothing and no one could be trusted. While that worked well, a few of the reveals felt a little familiar to the genre, and some of the side characters could have been explored more deeply to give the story even more impact. Overall I’d recommend this to those who favor psychological thrillers by Freida McFadden and Daniel Hurst.

I was instantly drawn in by the eerie premise of The Girl in the Window and that unsettling hook about the mysterious girl who looked just like the narrator. The story moved quickly, with short, sharp chapters and a steady undercurrent of tension that made it easy to keep turning the pages. I liked how the twists kept me guessing and how McDine captured the creeping sense that nothing and no one could be trusted. While that worked well, a few of the reveals felt a little familiar to the genre, and some of the side characters could have been explored more deeply to give the story even more impact. Overall I’d recommend this to those who favor psychological thrillers by Freida McFadden and Daniel Hurst.

What would you do if you saw someone who looked exactly like you? Would you be intrigued and fascinated, wanting to get to know your double, just like Laura who is determined to find out everything about Alana?
Like Laura, I wouldn’t be able to believe my eyes either, and I completely understand why she reaches out. Would I go as far as she does? No, I don’t think so. Still, I found it very interesting to see how the two women grow closer and begin to confide in each other. And it’s precisely this bond they create that becomes responsible for the further course of the story. Needless to say, making a good plan is no guarantee that it will actually work…
I felt immediate sympathy for Alana. What she goes through on a daily basis is something you wouldn’t wish on anyone. She’s stuck in a hopeless situation. Laura also earned my sympathy. Even though she may have rushed a bit too quickly into reacting to her personal life, she reveals herself as a kind of female knight in shining armor. It’s just a shame that someone she trusted turned out to be completely unworthy of it.
I truly enjoyed reading this book. The characters were fantastic—of course, some had better personalities than others, but all of them were well developed. Both Alana and Laura get the chance to share their own points of view, and that’s a narrative structure I really like.
In short, this story is excellent, with a delicious twist at the end that gives it that extra spark. I’m already looking forward to the author’s next book. 5 stars.

They say everyone has a double and this high quality book delves into this premise. Told from alternative pov this is a captivating listen from start to finish as the plot unravels. Laura wants to help her double but at times questions what she sees as for the double well, so expertly written and narrated you are never sure if there is something more calculating going on. I absolutely loved this two very different people who look the same with such different lives. I did predict the final twist half way through and found i wasn't disappointed. They were both fatally flawed and i loved the dripping of their lives in their own pov. This was a quick listen well paced the side characters were so cleverly placed it gave the story grounding. I loved the interactions and the setting . It was a 5 star listen with a interesting plot that developed quickly full of twists and turns . A perfect thriller which could have gone off in some many different directions. Narration was spot on for all characters. I am fascinated by the thought of doppelgangers. So when I read the synopsis of this audiobook, I was very interested. The book, at times, had me intrigued and at other times scratching my head and saying I saw that coming. I never really related to either Laura or Alana, which might have helped me to enjoy the book more. I did really enjoy the two narrators. Tamsin Kennard and Stephanie Cannon were amazing with the different accents and kept me going to the end. Would I recommend this book? Yes, I would. That being said, you might enjoy it way more than I did.

Laura stares at the woman in the restaurant window, she looks exactly like her, except she’s the perfect version – manicured fingernails, highlights in her hair, flawless make up. She’s sitting at a table with a handsome, older man but sees something that she shouldn’t & she becomes convinced the woman is in danger. With no way she can ignore what she’s just seen & she decides to find out more & learns that Alana lives with her rich husband in a stunning cliff-top mansion & really does appear to have it all. But behind closed doors nothing is as it seems with the truth more dangerous than she could ever have imagined.
Well this developed quickly! Beginning at a relatively slow pace, through the eyes of Laura, a veterinary nurse whose long-term relationship falls apart & sees her fleeing to Cornwall to figure things out, the pace drastically speeds up as she becomes aware of her doppelgänger who lives in the quaint, rustic village she is visiting.
The way the author sets the scene in the first part of the book really builds up the intrigue, so by the time we reach the second part, it is really interesting to see things through the eyes of Alana, Laura’s doppelgänger.
It’s really difficult to say much more without giving anything away but the twists just keep coming, and although I did figure a few of them out ahead of time, I was kept captivated by the to-ing and fro-ing from character perspectives, especially in the later sections.
The audiobook version of this title is perfectly executed by both narrators, the ‘voice’ given to Marcus by both sent shivers down my spine, they both hit the nail on the head with his character description to a tee. I totally believed the suspense created and was fully invested throughout.
My only niggle about this book is the title, I just don’t think it sums it up at all but that is just my own personal opinion and doesn’t in any way detract from what is a captivating psychological thriller that I thoroughly enjoyed.

I picked this audiobook because the doppelganger angle instantly grabbed my attention, and I’m glad I did. The prologue hooked me right away, and the narrators set the tone beautifully from the start. Their voices, accents, and pacing felt perfect for the story; nothing overdone, just easy and engaging, which made me finish it in two days.
The plot isn’t overly complex, but it’s intriguing and nicely layered with mystery. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, the setting, and the way the story flows without dragging. Even though some twists felt predictable, the book still kept me guessing and wanting to know more. I connected with the protagonist, and the side characters fit well without distracting from the main story. The tension builds naturally.

There’s no doubt in my mind; this book is absolutely brilliant. From the very first page I was hooked and couldn’t put it down. Doppelgangers? Cornwall? Odd neighbours? Is the husband really for real? What about the ex-fiancé? Oh yeah, bring it on. I’ve always enjoyed A J McDine’s thrillers, and The Girl in the Window is her best yet.
The story is told from two POVs, Laura’s and Alana’s. One thing I loved was how the author gave each woman a distinctive and separate voice. So many writers might blur their characters together, but here the dual point of view felt more real because of how the author created their individual voices.
I don’t want to give too much away. The plotting is perfectly paced. The settings felt so vivid that I felt I was there watching everything unfold. And the ending? I loved it; with a tear in my eye, I loved it. I truly got pulled in. Be warned: once you start reading, you’re not going to want to put it down.

I loved this exciting and fast pasted psychological thriller! There’s so much intensity, suspense and surprising twists, which made it difficult to stop reading!!
The story was mysterious and super engaging!
Laura finds her significant other in bed with another woman and decides it’s time for a break and decides to get away from that bad situation.
Laura ends up finding her doppelgänger Alana on this trip. Life for Alana looks perfect from the outside, but is far from it and Laura wants to help her.
I enjoyed the multiple POV from Laura and Alana!! It was really fun to read their different thoughts.

WOW!!!! What a story this was. I truly believe that every person does have someone out there that looks like them. What is the coincidence that you will find that person in your lifetime. Not very high in my opinion. I will say that this book started off slow but I always think that about most of the books I read. Only a handful start off with a bang and end like that too. Please hold on and it does move faster. I didn’t want to put in down for the life of me after that slow start. I was swiping through those chapters like there was no tomorrow. I kept thinking too would I help a stranger like this woman did. I don’t know. It’s a hard question to answer. What truly made this book was that ending. There was a little surprise and I was shocked but I also had a feeling the entire book about that surprise. I would highly recommend this book and author. She’s the best. I’ve read several of her books and they always had me hooked to the end. This was different. I can’t wait to read more by her.
