Drew Collins #4

The Mortal Affairs

Rate this book
A strange email from a college student pulls Mythical agents, Himora Clarke and Trevor Coleman, into a hidden world of doors, memory spells, and a powerful vampire family who’ll do anything to keep their secrets buried.

What begins as a simple lead unravels into a generational story meant to stay buried. Secrets that refuse to die, and sins that never stop feeding.

As our unlikely agents are pulled closer to each other, their bond stirs a darkness that could be the very thing that destroys them both just as it did once before.

I know that many of you were introduced to @Granger via Maggie Grey. I strongly suggest you take the time to also explore her entire catalog.

As a Patreon girlie, I've had the pleasure (and stressor) of reading along in real time as she's worked out the Mortal Affairs storyline. I can't say enough about how amazing her brain is as each book release just blows my mind even more. She leaves you wondering how does she come up with these storylines. Anywho, if your wondering what happens when a peculiar Fae, an annoyingly cocky shifter/mimic and a few witches team up to investigate cases, well this is the story for you. As always the First Family is consistently in the middle of drama and cover-ups but this just might be their messiest secret of them all.

Will you be reading the Mortal Affairs? if so, buckle up and enjoy the ride. Take it nice and slow. You might even find yourself uncovering a few breadcrumbs that lead you right back to DCU and the Underground. Be prepared, this one has a real BITE to it 😉

Granger can write the hell out of a story. I really wish someone would pick this series up for a movie or two or even a tv series. It’s just that good. Can’t wait to head back to Drew Collins.

Definitely a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5! This story went so well with the Drew Collins series even thought its a completely different story. I loved Himora down bad she was so interesting with addressing her disability yet still trying to function in her world. I still need to understand the dancing and Trevor becoming obessed with her so fast when just a page before he couldnt stand her lowkey. Im also interested in why Trevor and Adrian made a certain decision in the end. So much to unpack in this book but over all I really enjoyed it.

This book ate down! It took me about a week to finish because I wanted to read with intention and truly take in everything Granger was laying down. Her pen game never misses. I absolutely loved this entire new cast, yes, cast, because her books always feel like a movie. So well thought out and vivid.

I really didn’t think I was going to like Ace at first, but he ended up growing on me lol. And Wilhemina? She needs to be stopped immediately. I cannot wait for this new squad to collide with Maggie Grey and the crew!

Where do I start?
I’m going to first state the obvious. This ominous piece of work was an absolute masterpiece. Granger should hold a master class on how to properly cast out a story and reel it all the way back in. The way she is expanding the Underground universe is impressive to say the least and I am salivating and quite literally on my knees begging for more.

Going into this, I genuinely had no idea what to expect. I went in with the mindset of disconnecting Drew Collins but honestly, that wasn’t necessary. The best way to describe it is this was the background noise that plays all throughout the Drew Collins series. The stuff we weren’t privy to. The explanations we needed came to play all while creating a new story with different perspectives. I can’t get over how perfectly executed this was. Oh to be inside the mind of Granger.

I honestly wasn’t expecting any romance at all. Granger said she wanted that aspect to take a back seat, but for some reason I was feeling it. It didn’t make me feel like I usually do and I thought that was kind of cool? It was very much so different. Everything about this was different and that’s what makes these books the best.

The merger between Drew Collins and the Mortal Affairs Department is seriously going to be something epic.

Now would I say this was a prequel? No I would not and here’s why—
Although it is possible to follow the story as a standalone, and I guess you could read it without reading Drew Collins, I feel like that create a cloud of confusion. This story was already hard enough to follow so I couldn’t imagine reading this without attending Drew Collins first.

I do not know where to start. I felt like I was in a whole new story with no ties to the Maggie Grey series even though there is a connection. The Mortal Affairs is wonderful. It is filled with magic, ancestors, history, a bit of romance, deception, discovery, revenge, and is just an all-around page turner. So many layers are pulled back that answer questions about the first family but also this new family emerging, and the friend group is a good time. Himora is beautiful, absorbed in routine, but meeting Trevor has not only helped her discover more of herself, she has helped him release who he really is and babyyy, he sure is a force of nature. His true self, Adrias, is going to cause mayhem and I really want to see what it is like once he finds his sister. I was not expecting Himora to be turned into a vampire. It seems like it jumped ahead and we missed a few things. Ace, Trevor’s best friend, grew on me because for a moment I thought he was going to be an enemy, but he can stay. I was expecting him to have a love connection with the wonderful Nessa, but hello Audrey. Nessa is such a key piece of the story and I enjoy her discovering what happened in her family’s past, including her grandmother Lettie, as it runs so deep. There is just so much to talk about with this storyline that has me wanting to discuss random parts of the book, so to stop myself from rambling I will just say it is a great book that I want more of as soon as possible. Granger always makes sure we have a time and go on a journey with her novels and I am here to stay for the next one and however many she decides to write after that.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (yes, six out of five because five just isn’t enough)

I went into Mortal Affairs hesitant (no Maggie, no crew) but DARE I SAY… I might love Himora even more. And Trevor. And Ace. Every single one of them. Flawless.

If you love Maggie, don’t even think about skipping this one. Her presence runs deep in these pages, even if she’s just a whisper in the background. And Marvin Holmes? The deeper we go, the clearer it is.. that man is twisted in every possible way.

But let’s circle back to Himora. She gives neurodivergent energy in the best way ie blunt, analytical, and a little too real. I love how her mind works, and how she sees the world. Plus her chemistry with Trevor? *chefs kiss

This book was everything. I’m counting down until Himora’s and Maggie’s worlds officially collide.

👏👏👏

The Mortal Affairs was so freaking good, it had me hooked from the very first page. Himora Clarke and Trevor Coleman’s chemistry is undeniable, the kind that simmers under every scene and keeps you holding your breath. Their connection runs deep, shaped by pain, purpose, and something dangerously familiar.

Granger did an incredible job weaving their story into the larger world, giving us a tale that feels both fresh and tied to the roots of the Drew Collins series. The mystery, the magic, the haunting sense of history repeating it all builds into a story that lingers long after you finish. This one definitely left me wanting more of Himora and Trevor’s world.

Great book I feel it was a nice break from Maggie. Love how she brought the characters together hope they are in the next books too.
I wouldn’t recommend reading if you haven’t read first two. I recommend reading as close to other two as possible. Will definitely be reading the next book one of my favorite series. Hope it’s not too long of a wait patiently waiting impatiently

This book was phenomenal ! It had a little bit of everything in this book. It was a paranormal fantasy historical fiction thriller horror , EVERYTHING. Book was written beautifully. I vividly saw everything as I was reading it. Honestly everything I’ve read from Desiree/Granger has been amazing and she keeps out doing her self . All her books should be made a series or movie immediately

Okay so I feel like most of the other books in this series, this was a bit overwhelming. What I mean by that is so much was happening all at once. At the same time, I do appreciate questions that were answered from the rest of the series, questions I didn’t even think of. This was a clever addition to the series in my opinion but it did leave me with whiplash and a bit of confusion.

I liked it, didn’t love it. Would still recommend for anyone already in the series and want to know more.

Perfection!

She wrote the hell out of this story! I can't wait to see more about the Agency, I'm picturing it like a TV show where each episode is new mystical mystery they solve. I don't know how she's going to do it, but I know she's going to bring Drew Collins and the Agency together at some point.

Granger does it EVERY time! Infinity stars for me. I keep making posts about her work because she is seriously a talented writer/author and more people need to know about her work and I don’t know why they don’t. This could, and should be, a TV series or movie series and should be blown up it is wickedly underrated.

You can read this as a first in the series and not be lost but I personally suggest to read the first 3 books in the Drew Collin’s series (The Secret World of Maggie Grey book 1) before reading Mortal Affairs just because there’s so many little Easter egg moments that you appreciate so much after reading the first 3.
This is not Maggie Greys story but it is definitely very interconnected to the same world and that scene where Trevor mimics her mother Gloria’s voice?! I was gagged!! Such a clever plot and amazing interwoven story.

The way this authors mind works is wondrous because this was so well thought out, so well written and I officially have a new favourite FMC and her name is Himora Clarke. She’s a very intelligent, very rare fae with a condition called ‘Eclipsed Fae’ which has different aspects to it but one being that she does not pick up on social cues and does not understand how to interact socially as the majority of people, or mystical beings, do. She is the head of her one person department in the Mortal Affairs Department and when the lead GRIOT agent (a field agent working hands on with unruly mystical beings and/or humans), Trevor Coleman gets temporarily demoted to working under her, things take off from there.

Crazy secrets, involving the First Family of course, begin to unravel, drama, action, horror, fantasy, magical and mystical beings, blood contracts, ancestral family secrets and history between some of the most powerful mystical families of the Underground are coming to light and to top that all off heart warming found family vibes and the cutest romance between two unlikely characters.

I can’t get over this read I loved it so much. I’m still going through my Granger/Desiree journey and working on her other series now but the Drew Collin’s series holds a special place and will most definitely always be a top series for me.

Other characters that I loved in here, Nessa! Love this girl, she’s a badass Dubois (Famous 5) witch who knows her shit.
Ace Martin, a warlock from another big Famous 5 witch family who is the best friend of Trevor and so cute with his nerdy self.
Terry Clarke, Himora’s father, loved this man he doesn’t play about his youngest baby girl.
Audrey, we don’t see her until towards the end but I still love her character with her Harry Potter wand/stick and her determined self!
Poette Davis, Maggie Greys grandmother, because I loved seeing her younger self in this book and getting to understand her past especially with Marvin Holmes

Wheww I love this book and this series.!

I had such an amazing time with this book. My favorite out of the 4. Granger is such a creative, visionary. This felt like a movie. Pure was chaos with intention. Although book four doesn’t fully involve our main characters of books 1-3, it follows the same timeline at a different location in the Underground. These new bad ass characters work for a mythical agency tackling big cases and almost every question we had from the first three books, gets answered by the works of them!
Things I enjoyed:
Magical adventures
Black Magic
Layered characters + development
Historical memories
Comedic relief
It gets a 4 because didn’t enjoy the typos, they definitely stopped me in my tracks. Also *spoiler incoming*
I remember vividly when Maggie was on the way to her parents with Bellamy. She was in the phone with them before the spell was casted on them. The scene in Mortal Affairs showed no sign of mom being on the phone with her. Am I tripping? I was definitely confused in the beginning about the timeline around that part. It felt like things were missing.

Overall, unforgettable read. Loved it!!!!

This was a GREAT READ!!! Nice side story to the main story of Maggie Grey! Coincided well with Book 3. I love the intro of the new characters and the personality of Himora.

I love the use of southern states and the mix of historical references in a fictional story. The use of southern culture and religious references (church, hymns, amen, etc.), if you're a southerner, will bring the story to life even more.

The relationship between Himora & Trevor is intoxicating. I love the story line but hate that Trevor turned her into a Vampire. I wish Granger would have explored Homora's background more and used those traits and abilities to make them more compatible and Himora more capable of dealing with Trevor as well as loving, protecting & supporting their child.

I look forward to books 5 & 6! Great series thus far! Loving the crew, storylines, and detail poured into each character and situation.

DESIREE GRANGER ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

I am a huge fan of your writing. The first book I ever read by you was hoodwinked. I didn't know any of your work prior. I was so hooked to the point that I researched if there was another book because this could not be the end of this book. It had so much potential, and when I found the rest of the books and your catalog, I just went down the rabbit hole. And I've been a fan ever since. Reading your material and seeing how your brain works and how you put a story together when I tell you, this book is the epitome of reaching the mountain top. You know how when black people succeed in Excel in life and create things that are phenomenal, you feel literal joy and happiness for your culture. That's what I felt after reading this book. You are amazing. This book is amazing. I hope you keep producing at this level in beyond💯🫶🏾

leave it to Granger to leave a mouth dropping ending! wow, I SEE WHY THIS WAS BOOK 4. Everything makes so much sense. I truly enjoyed reading all the events that took place from the adults standpoint! I liked how this book gave horror/spooky vibes too! I wasn’t expecting it at all. I absolutely love me some Himora okay?! She went from ghost to HBIC real quick and she ALWAYS stood on business. Her personality was so unique and I loved it for real! I also loved how I thought the love story was gonna go one way and it took a TOTAL different turn from what I was expecting and I loved the twist! Granger never disappoints. I loved this read! I REALLY can’t wait for book 5!!!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Mortal Affairs by Granger had me in a chokehold, okay?! The drama was drama-ing, the tension was tense-ing, and the plot did NOT come to play. Every chapter felt like “just one more page” until suddenly it’s 2 a.m. 🥴

The characters were messy in the best way, the twists snuck me when I got too comfortable, and the story stayed gripping the whole way through. This book was giving obsession, stress, and satisfaction all at once.

Yeah… Granger ate this up. Five stars, no crumbs.

Well granger definitely did it again. I might actually love these characters a little more than the originally set. A VAE!!! Im definitely looking forward to seeing how these characters can be potentially incorporated into the rest of the series.
It's like when I thought the craziness couldn't get worse, here comes a new character that throws off my entire thought pattern.
