When in Bloom

Rate this book
Could the personal challenges of a former Army doctor and a brilliant florist get in the way of a chance at life and love?

Fighting Type One diabetes since childhood, Jude Sebastian runs to prove he can live a normal life, until epileptic seizures begin to change his life. Even with Dawson, his Medical Alert Golden Labrador, at his side Jude finds daily life difficult. He owns the floral shop, Flowers in the Breeze, and designs everything from simple bouquets to elaborate themes for weddings and celebrations.

At the Shore Breeze Clinic, Jude comes across a man clearly suffering with a PTSD episode. A new arrival in the small town, Doctor Elliott Sheffield, a retired Army Ranger doctor is looking for a second chance after what he saw in the Middle Eastern deserts.

Wanting a normal relationship, Jude tries to deny his disorders, but something is happening. He can’t regulate his sugars and his disorder worsens. When he returns to the clinic, Dawson alerts him to an oncoming seizure.

Will the personal issues and challenges of both men get in the way of a chance at love?

Dreamy…Sensual…Forever Love

A quiet one, Nicole Dennis is the penname of an asexual author of different genres of fiction – both LGBT+ and hetero. Lots of characters, worlds, and stories build up in her head until she must get them down on the screen – anything from romance to fantasy to paranormal.

During the day, she works in a quiet office in Central Florida, where she makes her home, and enjoys the down time to slip into her imagination. She is owned by a feline companion – a fluffy house panther, known as Midnight the Void. A very special furbaby who is FIV+ and polydactyl on her front paws (fluffy danger mittens!).

I’ve read all of the books in this series so far, but I really have to say that this one is by far my favorite. There was just something about the characters that really drew me in and kept me wanting to read more and more.

One thing that I do have to give the author props for big time is that even though there is medical talk in this book, (and what I would consider a fair amount of it), I wasn’t lost with it. It was explained in a way that a person who has no experience with the medical issues talked about would be able to understand and follow along with the story perfectly. And with how important of a part those issues played in the story, I thought it was great how they went about explaining it.

I did enjoy all the characters in the book. I felt like Jude and Elliott were both amazingly strong men – who were willing to lean on each other when they needed the support. And they were both there for each other no matter what.

Like with any Dennis book though, there was the drama and suspense happening and I have to say, HOLY CRAP! I couldn’t believe what emotions I was going through as I was following along with the story. Things were insanely well done that I couldn’t turn the pages quick enough.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a new series. I would say that even though this is book 4 in the series, it can still be read as a standalone. You get some information about the previous couples, but if you haven’t read them, then I would say you could still read this and follow along just fine.

Finally catching up on my review for this one. My apologies to the author and publisher for being waaaaaaay behind the 8-ball with this.

This was the only book in the series I read, and it worked well as a standalone, even though it includes characters from the previous books.

This was... nice. A little bland. A little non-exciting. Until the climax, which was out of left field and didn't make a whole lot of sense. Nice banter, nice MCs, nice story flow. Just a little on the bland side.

I liked that a character with a disability was featured. Jude, owner of the flower shop in town, has type 1 diabetes, and has recently developed epileptic seizures. Now partnered with a Medical Alert dog named Dawson, he happily runs his flower shop, preparing custom bouquets.

While at the local clinic, he meets the new doc, Elliott Sheffield, ex-military, suffering from PTSD. Their romance starts out slow, and Jude tries to hide his illness just as much as Elliott tries to hide his traumatic experiences overseas.

As I said, it was nice. The dialogue was stilted on occasion, but I liked their banter. The characters were nicely developed and believable. The story flowed well. The climactic scene toward the end was a little unexpected, though.

This was a nice way to spend a few hours.

** I received a free copy of this book from its publisher. A positive review was not promised in return. **

I fell in love with this book before I turned the first page. We meet former Army doctor Dr. Elliott Sheffield mid-PTSD episode as he loses it in a civilian hospital ER. A kind and gentle psychiatrist helps ground Elliott and then assists him in making a decision that may help prevent or lessen future attacks. Meantime, a stray cat adopts Elliott, bringing a calming influence to his environment. The story of getting the nervous cat to the vet will have you grinning.

We meet Jude Sebastian in the next chapter as he is subjected to yet another examination for his double whammy of Type 1 diabetes and epilepsy, which are not stable despite the most up-to-date interventions. Jude has a service dog who alerts him when anything out of the ordinary is about to happen to Jude's body, including seizures and off-kilter blood sugar readings.

So, now we have two damaged and suffering heroes. Did I mention they are both very good-looking? Elliott is a silver fox doctor and Jude is a cute-as-a-button florist. Now all we have to do is get them together, and that happens in a wild thunderstorm that ruins Elliott's new suit and his dignity. Nevertheless, the two embark on a courtship of sorts that leads them down several paths within a gay community on the Gulf shores of Florida. Fair warning, there is a scene guaranteed to make you cry, so if you read in public places as I do, consider yourself advised to bring tissues.

As I said, there are several intersecting plotlines in this story. One involves possible financial ruin for several small businesses in the community, another features the questionable qualifications of a doctor, then there is the mysterious black box that has appeared connected to a number of Internet servers in town, and that's not all that's going on. Since this is No. 4 in the Southern Charm series, some of the characters were introduced in previous books and not all of the plotlines are resolved in this particular installment. What we do get is one of Ms. Dennis' beautiful HEAs for the heroes. That said, will the timid cat, named Sigmund Freud, and the big, loyal yellow Lab, named Dawson, be able to get along as well as their owners? That remains to be seen.

Each book in the series can be read as a stand-alone, but I can tell you that if you read one you will be hooked and want to read them all. I can hardly wait for the next book in the series! Call me a huge Nicole Dennis fan, and I won't deny it.

This book is definitely a good 4.5 stars.
Jude is a diabetic and epileptic. Elliot is a doctor who recently returned from a combat zone and is dealing with ptsd.
I loved both of these characters and their emotional connection. Even before they admitted love they were so connected body mind and soul. Exactly what everyone dreams of.. finding someone who embraces you for who you are, physical and mental issues included. However, I do wish that the book had ended with Jude topping elliot bc he had previously been unable to. I think it would have been a nice wrap up to show that Jude health really was improving.
There was one part in the book that literally had me crying my eyes out! I was actually super sad! Elliot had to deal with a man bringing in his partner with AIDS and it was the end so elliot could only make him comfortable until he died. Omg it was heartbreaking! !!!!!! It was so hard to read bc I was crying so much I could hardly see the screen! That being said, the remaining partner Jeremy is super struggling and his BFF Wyatt is helping him thru it..ok I totally am hoping they get together! I know it would be a tiny bit weird but tbh gay guys share exes all the time bc they dont have the drama girls have usually lol. Anyway I'm sure Patrick would want Jeremy and wyatt to be happy!
This series is very enjoyable and fun to read. It is seriously well written, except for a few little editing mistakes like name switches etc.
I wish the books were released faster tho.

This is book 4 of the southern Charm series but stands alone just fine.
When in bloom is a beautiful romance between two men with handicaps. I loved both of these men and their fight to have a normal life and love. Jude owns the flower shop in town and has type one diabetes and seizures. He is a sweet man and very careful to monitor his health. He meets Elliott when I he is at the clinic to try to see why he is having more problems after getting an insulin pump. Elliott is coming for an interview and is caught in a storm that triggers his PTSD Jude recognizes the symptoms and he and his alert dog comfort Elliott and get him through it.

I loved that this story wasn’t about two perfect men. They both have their issues and still can find love though it is such a challenge. There is a couple twists and a really sad part with one of Elliott’s patients dying of aids. I cried my eyes out. There is lots of sweet yet emotional moments in this book and some fun, sweet and sexy ones as well. I loved getting another peek at Malcomb too.
My only real issue is it brings up some of the unsolved mysteries from the other books, and there is another mystery connecting the others, that was mentioned then dropped. I am hoping it will all come out in the final book and I hope that’s not too soon since I love this series.

If you like sweet romance, broken me, handicaps, cute cats and dogs, and some sexy sensual man-sex this is for you!

This couple fit together perfectly. Not that everything is easy for them but I liked the way they were there to help each other. My problem with the first book in this series was that I didn’t really feel a connection between the main characters and to some extent that carried through to the other stories too. But by the end of When in Bloom I felt that Jude and Elliot had really cemented their bond.

This was also the first book to really stir any emotion in me. And wow, did it ever. I was crying like a baby when one of Elliot’s patients dies. I think the author did a great job of evoking the emotions needed to make that scene memorable, particularly because we hadn’t met any of the characters involved prior to that scene.

Series wise, Mr. Harding rears his head again (figuratively – we still don’t actually meet him), and there’s the new mystery, although probably connected, of what’s up with the town’s computers? We’re also introduced to a couple more men who need a story. This series is gearing up to be a long one!

TOUCHING ROMANCE!!!

This is a terrifically written touching, beautiful romance between Jude and Elliott. Jude is the owner of the local florist shop, that we met in a previous book. Elliott is the sexy doctor who just transferred into town. Of course they are drawn to one another. This story includes Jude having Type-1 diabetes with seizures and Elliott suffering from PTSD with storm related episodes. Luckily Jude has Dawson a trained alert dog and Elliott was adopted by a cat he named Sigi. I loved this story. I thought the characters were magnificently written by a brave author, who wasn't afraid to take on these two very serious illnesses. This shows the frustration that people with these conditions deal with and suffer daily. I applaud you Nicole Dennis and thank you from the bottom of my diabetic heart! Maybe this beautiful, hot, love story will help raise awareness for people who have these problems. I loved that both the characters were strong, sexy men, who don't let life get the best of them. I love this series, the stories just keep getting better!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND THIS AFFORDABLE SERIES!!!

PTSD is discussed in this story, with war triggers.

I had not read the previous books in this series, but didn’t feel like I was missing much. Dennis did a great job at allowing a reader who just picked this story up to really know the characters.

Jude is such a kind soul. He exudes softness – and it’s not only because he had a medical dog, Dawson, who is also adorable. Jude has this calmness about him.

Elliott is a war vet, ER doctor who decides he needs a new pace to help him continue dealing with his PTSD flashbacks.

The “meet cute” was SO ADORABLE! Definitely a made for movie scene. Both Jude and Elliott come through their own trials, but through their love, stubbornness and friendship, both will find their way. I liked the community that this story takes place in – I hope communities like this really do exist.

I would read this author again, simply based on how much I enjoyed this story.

I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

Great story!

Really liked this fourth story in the Southern Charm series! A wounded warrior, Elliott and Jude a florist with a heart of gold with his own health issues, meet and feel a connection immediately. Jude helps Elliott through a PTSD episode, and shows him how caring he is. Elliott, taking a job in the clinic in town, helps Jude through a health crisis and almost gets killed in the process. Getting through this helps both men to admit their love and begin a life together. Was great to see some of the other characters from previous stories, and how their lives are going. Well done!

I really enjoyed this well-told tale of two nice guys in a small Florida town.

The story explores issues relating to type one diabetes, epilepsy, post-traumatic stress and medications. We also get to see a working medical alert dog, a Labrador.

I had not read any earlier books in the series but several businesses run by gay men are visited during the course of this tale, so the flower shop which gives this one its title must be the latest in the sequence. Well done Nicole Dennis, When In Bloom is a lovely read.

Really 4.5 stars. This is a touching story about two men with serious issues and their struggles to overcome those issues. Jude and Elliott turn out to be exactly what the other needs to succeed in becoming whole again. Add in a stray cay cat, a service dog, and the Southern Charm cast, and you have a great story. (And, since it came without warning for me, I will warn you, there's a spot where you'll need tissues.) I look forward to maybe other additions to the series.

I have loved this series from book 1. This one with its two differently damaged MC's is just as compelling and character driven. The running theme in all the books is slowly getting close to a solution? Maybe! Looking forward to the next one.

Reviewed for Prism Book Alliance

In each book, one of the main characters deals with an illness or condition that affects their everyday lives. We have seen severe allergies, OCD, and migraines. In Bloom, both characters have issues to overcome. Jude has both epilepsy and type I diabetes. Elliot suffers from PTSD.

I actually like this one more than all the others. Maybe because it was dealing with an interesting disability (Type 1 diabetes) and I thought it was portrayed well.

The climax was a little too soap-opera-y for my liking, but overall this was the best one out of the bunch.

Another great story

I know that most HEA M/M books kinda follow the same recipe, but Ms. Dennis sure knows how to take it and spice it up. I've thourghly enjoyed each one of her books in this series and I'm looking forward to reading more.

I enjoyed this book, took an interest as one of the MCs has type 1 diabetes, it was entertaining enough to enjoy. She was really great with the diabetes part in the book.
