J. Nichole Parkins loves drama – as long as it’s fictional. She twists the real and unreal, weaving elements found in folklore and myth to create emotional reads with a punch.

Mother of three, Jamee lives in a state of organized chaos. Although she fled south to escape the snow, she spends the majority of her time avoiding the sun. Her head is in the clouds almost as often as it‘s behind a screen. She is never without a story brewing or a book (or three) in her bag.

Jamee can be found in quiet places, which is her natural habitat. Approach cautiously, she tends to run.

Kyra is a PI with extraordinary talents. Said talents bring her into contact with the FBI and a case that has "others" stamped all over it. But to solve this case, she must put herself on the line. Her talents get her a foothold in where the secrets to this case lay, but also, they put her sanity at great risk. Catching a monster without becoming one?? Immpossible.

I was given this book by the author for a review, and I thank her for that!

Oh this was a slow burner! A hint here, and there, and you dont get the full picture right off the bat! It comes a little at a time, not too slowly, just enough to keep you interested, snippets of power skills, of a less than perfect childhood, of heritage. Kyra doesnt really know WHAT she is, or the full extent of her power, I dont really think WE know that yet, and she only learns something at the hands of the Master of the local Vampire House, Alejandro. HE was a nasty piece of work, and used Kyra to get what HE wanted, regardless.

Daniel is a courier for said House, a human with a view to be turned. He turns Kyra upside and inside out, but in a good way and I liked him! (Shame on you, Ms Parkins!) Spencer is Kyra's FBI partner, he is an Other, a Grounder and proves invaluable to Kyra in some difficult moments.

I got whodunnit in the FBI case, as soon as Kyra's senses flagged them up, just not why, so so that a surprise. ALso, I did not like Kyra's choice at the end, HOWEVER I did not like it as I was reading, and as I was reading, it all began to make more sense as to WHY she made that choice.

Some violence, but not graphic, and relatively clean, although some steam, its well written and not explicit in any way and certainly not needed. Ive filed it on the over 18 shelf for the simple fact it deals with some difficult subjects.

I was left with some questions, mainly about ALejandro and his hold over Kyra, BUT again, they sorted themselves out, to some extent and I cant wait to find out what happens in the next book! While not a cliffhanger in a throw-your-kindle-at-the-wall sense, IT DOES NOT FINISH in this book. SO, I WILL be reading that! I am left with questions about Kyra though, that didnt sort themselves out, and THIS is the only reason I'm giving it a four star rating. Its just I get the feeling there is MORE to her, and its bothering me I;m not getting it.

Still a great read, and a fabulous debut novel. One to watch, I reckon.

This urban fantasy might just surprise you. The lore is comprised of elements both fresh and classic. The detail to the narrative is impressively descriptive. I especially like the way the author portrayed Kyra, the main character, as she learned and expanded on each of her skills, which added a level of realism to the story. Also, Kyra had so many layers to her personality and powers. You don't often see that much attention to detail in a single character. Her strengths, flaws, and quirks all worked together to form someone that I really felt like I knew well and understood by the end.

The biggest complaint I had about this story is that all the men are attracted to the main character. And, for her part, she's attracted to all of them. I felt that one of the guys in particular was often too accepting of the rest (though sometimes not), particularly in light of the fact that Kyra kept thinking of him as jealous. There are a few editing issues, particularly regarding punctuation and tense agreement.

The premise is somewhat of a paranormal murder mystery. I do have to say the pacing and balance between the plot and Kyra's personal growth were really well done. I look forward to seeing more from this author in the future. I award Burned 4 Platypires!

This is definitely a new twist on a paranormal story! There were vampires, shifters, and new (to me) paranormal characters.

This story is about a paranormal murder mystery. It kept me guessing throughout. The main character, Kyra, was a supernatural being but because of her upbringing she was not even aware of what category she fit into. As we followed the story we get glimpses into Kyra’s powers and discover her potential at the same time she is discovering it herself.

There were twists throughout the book as the murder mystery was unfolding. After a bit, I had an idea of who was behind the gruesome murders and it turned out I was correct. The resolution to the murder mystery seemed to be a little abrupt based on the lead up to it but it did tie it up nicely. However, the story did not end there. Just when it looked like the storyline for Kyra’s character was being tied up, there was a huge cliffhanger that I did NOT see coming.

I am looking forward to book 2 to see what happens next and watch as Kyra learns more about her talents and what she is capable of doing.

It'll leave you wanting more....
I am being pleasantly surprised at how much I got into this book. Paranormal stuff isn't really a genre I get into, especially vampires, but I did like the aspect of shifters. Starting out I thought the book was "okay". By the middle I was hooked and didn't want go put it down! The end left me shocked (I literally gasped lol) and wanting more. I cannot wait to see what's going to happen next.

*I received a free copy of the book in exchange for my honest feedback and a review

A paranormal, romantic suspense story, Burned kept me reading and the characters kept me interested. J. Nichole Parkins does a decent job of balancing her love triangle with Kyra's inner struggles and everyone's determination to either help her or win her heart. Everyone has secrets and Kyra is afraid to allow hers to get out. As I saw another reviewer say, Burned is a clean read. I would have preferred a little more description in the fight scenes, but Mrs. Parkins does a great job of holding your attention. I look forward to reading the next in this series. Well done.

This book was part of the eleven books in the From Darkness Comes Hope: A Sexual Assault Survivors Anthology. Being a survivor myself I wanted to be able to support the cause as well as read books by some amazing authors.

I am pleasantly surprised with this book. Maybe that is a good reason to end the anthology with this book. It is a paranormal suspenseful mystery. While some of the actions are expected there were some things that will have you cheering one way or another. Look forward to see where this series goes.

Just from reading this I know the series will be among my most favorites. I tend to accidentally say or post spoilers so that's all I'll say.

I really enjoyed this book it had a great storyline. I heard the audio version of this and I was pleasantly surprised by this story. The author did a good job of bringing me into the story and helping me connect with the characters. I love the secret life or not so secret as they think but I love the underworld life. I love me some shifters and vampires, they were my beginning loves of reading. This a very enthralling world!

Kyra was a great character very withdrawn at first and very stand offish but the ice queen slowly began to melt with all of the heat that was created by her and the other hotty totties in her life. Now I.HATE love triangles and be warned there is one in this story but Ms. Parkins knew how to spin it perfectly. She guided that runaway train to safety. Do not know how she did it but she made this story an easy flow the loves of Kyra’s life just fit perfectly even possibly this could in fact turn into a square. Sheesh Kyra!

I enjoyed this story until the end it was great and it left on a cliff hanger that had me wanting revenge too. Can’t wait to read the next in this series, I could see the many spin offs this can take. Get sucked into this awesomely dark world.
