After enduring a century of perpetual night, can Aurora save the kingdom from the Prince of Darkness?

The King of Darkness is dead, his violent reign of tyranny is over, and the first rays of light mark the beginning of a deadly ritual to choose the next monarch - The Coronation.

One wielder of each element’s power is selected by the magic of the land to compete in six dangerous games, but only one will survive.

Aurora never expected the woman who raised her to carry such a dangerous secret. She was one of the last light bringers, and was now being forced to participate in the deadly trials for the throne as well as master her newfound magic.

Sterling, Prince of Darkness- her most dangerous opponent- singles her out on the first day, vowing to end her and thrust the kingdom into perpetual night.

Each stolen moment in the shadows brings more questions than answers and shows her the man behind the cold and vicious mask.

Passion ignites, alliances form, but as tension rises between her and the Prince, she begins to realize she might not have to pay with her life… but with her heart.

Will the land of Gaylwynn be freed by the sun, or will it be taken over by eternal shadows?

For fans of The Serpent and the Wings of Night and A Kiss of Iron, Eternal Shadows is book one in the Coronation Trials Duet and is a heart-wrenching, slow burn, enemies to lovers romance with a morally black shadow daddy that would do anything for the women he’s obsessed with.

Eternal Shadows by Willow Asteria is a fantasy romance read. It does include some scenes that are spicy and descriptive so that is something to keep in mind if you are wanting spice or not. This book follows Aurora and her journey to self discovery. You quickly learn of her secret and the rest of the story unfolds. If you're a fan of a quick paced story line, trials and enemies to lovers you might enjoy this book.

First of all, I would like to thank Victory Editing and NetGalley for providing me with the e-ARC in exchange for my honest review. Eternal Shadows comes out on March 03, 2026!

Unfortunately, this book was a miss for me. I was really interested in the story after reading the description and the tropes, but I was fighting the urge to DNF only 20% in.

Eternal Shadows is a very fast-paced, insta-lust novella where the MCs are competing to win the crown. I was confused for most of it because there was little background information or context. The writing style also was not for me, as many paragraphs felt like broken sentences, and there were frequent time jumps between chapters. This made it feel like a series of separate mini stories instead of one cohesive novella. I truly wish the book had more depth and detail, as it felt rushed most of the time and the plot suffered because of it.

If you are looking for a slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers romance, this book might not be the best option. It leans heavily into insta-lust and jumps straight into flirting while ignoring the enemies side of the trope. In the same chapter the MCs met, she was already swooning and thinking about kissing him, while he nicknamed her in the first sentence he spoke to her, used the “who did this to you” and “good girl” tropes, and made her wear a very revealing nightgown for him to see within minutes of meeting.

The romance also felt rushed throughout the book, as did the bond between all the characters. Everything seemed superficial and kept me from truly connecting with them, which lessened the emotional impact of the trials.

Overall, Eternal Shadows would be best suited for fans of dark, fast-paced romances, insta-lust, morally grey MMCs, and possessive or obsessive male love interest tropes. As a huge fan of slow-burn romances, I do not think I will be reading the final book of this duet series.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for an e-arc of this book!

This is book 1 of a duet and is a short book (under 200 pages) and the biggest thing this book suffers from is its length. I overall like the concept and general story but it needs to go back to the drawing board and really dig into more of the storyline.

Our FMC, Aurora, doesn’t know it, but she’s secretly the last Lightbringer. This is exposed when the current king dies and the competition for the throne is thrust into the spotlight. One competitor from each types of magic is chosen to compete. The world has been ruled by darkness the past few centuries and everyone expects Prince Sterling to continue that line. The trials are deadly and only one will come out on top, but while Sterling has been noted as wicked and cruel as his father, Aurora quickly realizes not all is as it seems.

Again, the overall story I like. I just think it needs to be fluffed out a bit more. There isn’t a whole ton of world building. We don’t really know much about the Lightbringers and their history.

In terms of the romance, it’s supposed to be enemies to lovers, which it is, but also very insta-lust. Honestly, that doesn’t really bother me as a reader but for me, the fact that they have very few conversations in general and Aurora is falling in love? As with the world building, the romance just kind of suffers from lack of interaction for me. We do get a little spice 🌶️ which I’m glad to see but just wanted more out of the relationship developing.

This ends on a cliffhanger and I will be reading book 2 because again, I like the story. But I wouldn’t be opposed to a rewrite to add in so much more to the story by the author or really diving into the world and relationship more in book 2. 😊

This just did not work for me!

Aurora is introduced as a Lightwielder, a power believed extinct but essential to royal trials. Her so far unknown magic is revealed as exceptionally strong, to the point that her guardian immediately identifies her as a future queen—an accelerated setup that signals the novel’s central weakness, prioritizing a fast-plot over depth and complexity.

World-building is minimal, with key concepts introduced and abandoned in quick succession. The narrative feels to me as a series of loosely connected scenes rather than a cohesive progression, leaving little sense of stakes or continuity.

Aurora is portrayed as immature, shallow and naive. While this may suit a younger YA framework, the lack of sustained psychological depth or growth makes engagement difficult. This emotional flatness extends to all relationships in the story. The romantic arc, marked by insta-love, “good girl”/„who-did-this“ dynamics and open-door spice without any meaningful conversations, suffers from the same issue. Although the MMC, Stirling, is sensorially defined by a distinctly spicy scent, intimacy arrives too fast to carry emotional weight.

Despite an appealing core concept—trials for the crown, light winning over darkness and rivals to lovers—the novel attempts to contain way too much within its limited volume (171 pages).

The result is an ambitious, but to me underdeveloped work, which would have benefited from more emotional complexity/development, reflection and world-building!

⭐⭐⭐⭐ | 🌶️🌶️

Eternal Shadows is a fast paced romantasy built around elemental magic, a deadly competition for the crown, and a light versus dark dynamic that pulls you in immediately.

The premise alone had me hooked. When the ruling king dies, a brutal coronation begins and one wielder from each element must compete. Aurora is thrust into this world while discovering abilities she never asked for. Watching her navigate power, politics, and survival was compelling.

Aurora stands out because she chooses compassion in a setting that rewards cruelty. Her moral strength gives the story emotional grounding. The friendships woven into the trials added warmth without softening the stakes.

Sterling is very much a morally grey, possessive MMC. Intense. Controlled. Observant. The tension between him and Aurora is immediate and layered. Their dynamic carries strong chemistry, though I personally would have enjoyed slightly more gradual development.

The pacing is quick and highly readable. I flew through it in one sitting. Because it is short, some of the world building and relationship depth feel compressed, but the core concept is strong and engaging.

If you enjoy:
• Deadly magical trials
• Light versus dark power systems
• Enemies to lovers tension
• Possessive shadow prince energy
• Fast, bingeable romantasy

This will absolutely work for you.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for the ARC. All thoughts are my own.

This was a quick read, only being 124 pages! I really enjoyed the storyline, I love a book with trials or games. I really wish the book was more flushed out in terms of backstory on the characters, the world building, the magic, etc. I did feel it was a bit rushed… the love story truly didn’t make sense with how fast things were moving. I know this is book one, so I’m hoping as the series continues we will start to get more story telling. That is what this book is missing. It’s got some AMAZING quotes though:

“I will never be yours,” I spat in response. “Ah, so the kitten has teeth. Good, I like that. It would be a shame if the kill was too easy.”

“My heartbeat quickened as I took in his spicy scent. Even covered in sweat, he was still too handsome for his own good. He reached down and tucked my hair behind my ear, offering me a sad smile.”

“See, Jet, that is where you are wrong. For in the darkest times, kindness grows. Even when others try to snuff it out, there will always be a friend who will have your back. Or a stranger to offer a hand in their time of need. A rival that offers mercy when it’s undeserved. It takes one seed of kindness for it to grow and bloom. When light reigns, kindness will too.”

I would like to thank the author for choosing me to be on her ARC team! This is my honest review, but I did really enjoy the book.

Eternal Shadows has an intriguing setup and flashes of atmosphere that suggest a deeper, more layered story waiting to unfold. Unfortunately, the pacing moves so quickly that it never gives you enough time to settle into the world or form a real connection with the characters. Scenes shift before they have room to breathe, leaving the emotional beats feeling rushed and underdeveloped.

The female lead, in particular, comes across as extremely naive, almost in a way that feels suited to a younger YA heroine. That wide‑eyed innocence might have worked if the rest of the story matched that tone, but the sexual elements are written for a much older audience. The contrast creates a bit of whiplash and makes her characterization feel uneven.

There is potential here, and readers who enjoy fast pacing may appreciate the momentum. For me, the rushed execution and tonal mismatch kept the story from fully landing, though the core ideas were interesting enough to keep me reading.

You are left with "To Be Continued"...

3.75-4/5⭐️ 2/5 🌶️

I’m probably overthinking the star rating. But let me explain…

Okay so I loved the premise of this book — shadow daddy, light vs dark, elemental magic, hidden powers, and trials. I’m usually not big on trial-based plots, but this one definitely intrigued me.

However, this was a very fast-paced romantasy, and the author managed to squeeze everything into less than 150 pages, which honestly made me wish there was more. I felt like the MCs got together a little too quickly, and while I enjoyed the plot and twists, I wanted more development of the world, magic, and relationships. I do enjoy her writing style, but with the fast pacing, it just made me want to slow down and savor it more.

There are also a few spicy scenes which added to the romance without taking over the story.

And that cliffhanger… I literally screamed when I saw “To Be Continued.”

Book two please!

Thank you to the author and NetGalley for the ARC

Do you guys remember the game we used to play as kids called The Floor is Lava? Well, think that but deadlier, and also picture tall pillars with flat platforms on them and the contestants have to jump from pillar to pillar while other stuff is happening and the lava below rises! I certainly couldn't do that! But these characters did that trial and many more!

I loved how Aurora was never afraid to show mercy or kindness even when others didn't deserve it! Sterling is a who did this to you kinda character and would harm them if they so much as looked at what was his!

If you loved Spark of the Everflame by Penn Cole y'all will love this book!

Tropes: deadly trials, enemies to lovers, found family, hidden powers, who did this to you?

thank you NetGalley and Willow Asteria for the ARC!

I really enjoyed the story. Thought it was so interesting that after the King died, 6 elementals have to fight for the crown. Light wielders were hidden for years and Aurora suddenly finds out she is one and has powers.

The deaths were so sad and really broke my heart because I loved the friendships, even though they happened very fast 🥺💔

I liked Sterling. You can tell how much Sterling loves Aurora and I really hated that he yielded to her in the end, called her his Queen, just for her to throw him in the pits with his mother (who actually deserved it). That was unfair and cruel when he saved her constantly and even willingly gave her his crown.

I’m excited to read book 2 because I need justice for Sterling

If you are into fantasy, a competition for the crown, and a forbidden romance then this is the perfect series to read from Willow Asteria! Our main heroine Aurora is competing for the crown to keep the world from being engulfed in darkness. With the help of friends and guidance from her guardian she tries to keep Prince Sterling from taking over after his father has passed. There is adventure, romance, and hints to a larger plot that I'm excited to see in future stories in the Coronation Trials series.

This series has so much potential! It’s not very long, but packed with things happening. In my perfect world, I would like it to be a bit longer with a bit more world building and character development. We can’t have it all, can we? If you want a quick fast paced fantasy read - this one is for you! Even though I think the story is a bit short, there is parts that could be more, you know? I like it and really want to know what happens next!

My jaw hit the floor a couple of times, just saying!

Thank you for trusting me with this ARC Willow Asteria! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I wanted more of this book. More world building, more character development, and delving more into the games. The book reminded me a little of Red Queen in the fact that there are separate powers fighting for the crown. It was a very quick and easy read. It ends a bit abruptly for me, and it certainly has a cliff hanger for the next book. The ending was fairly predictable, but nothing that takes away from the story itself.

I'm excited for the next book. I do hope we get more backstory to the kingdom and light bringers in general.

Ok I really loved the storyline and I do want to read what happens next but the way it was written felt rushed. The story just rushed from one stage to the next and the characters didn't really have time to develop the relationship in a believable way. I felt no connection when characters died and I wish I felt sad.
I have no problem with instalove but this left me feeling like I missed something.
All in all not a terrible first book and I do want to know what happens next so I feel a solid 3 stars.

This book had me pulled in till the very end. Our FMC Aurora is a light bringer and her family has hidden her from the kingdom. She has no idea she has magic until the King dies and the next ruler has to compete in 6 deadly games. One magic wielder of each element is selected by the magic of the land and the old King made sure all light wielders were killed off. Surprise, a light wielder is alive and is competing in the games. The prince takes a liking to her and is trying to keep her alive, while his mother is trying to eliminate her.

This book was so good. It had me on the edge of my seat while reading. And the ending…. The cliffhanger!!! What!!!! I need book 2.

If your looking for a a fast paced, addictive read packed with trial games, a strong female lead, secrets, betrayals, and that constant tension of not knowing who to trust, he falls first, tension, enemies to lovers, Pick this up!

It ends on a cliffhanger with so many unanswered questions—clearly setting up book two.

I was hooked from the beginning it is very fast paced and this is a short book a very quick read and if I’m honest it could have done with more building the story line was really good we just needed more of the story and of the characters and it would have been a 5 star rating from me! But considering it was short and very packed it was good I enjoyed it, looking forward to the next book

Yall now that's what I call an amazing quick read! You have danger, secrets, and completion. The spice is at least 4 chili peppers. If you need something to read between her books or others it's phenomenal read. Can she discover her destiny or will everything be ruined with her secret. Can she change his mind? Guess you will have ever to read it to find out. Bravo Willow Asteria id read your grocery list.

This book had me gasping, kicking my feet in the air giggling, and then with tears in my eyes another minute. This book has left me in shock no lie! The enemies to lovers aspect is amazing, possessive MMC with a independent FMC. The yearning ate! This was a read on the shorter side, fast-paced but not rushed. I almost feel like the author has slapped me upside the head lol! But in a good way? 🤣🥹

Such an amazing concept! A truly great idea for a Romantasy!
I love the idea behind this book, but the execution felt rushed. I would like to see the characters a bit more fleshed out, and really built that tension between Aurora and Stirling - it felt like she fell in Instalove, which didn’t suit the vibe

Overall, did I enjoy it?, yea. Will I continue the series? probably not.

This was a quick little read, very minimal world building, all you really know is she’s a library assistant who didn’t know she had powers and a king died and now 6 people are in a fight for the crown.

It’s hard to place as you don’t know of what era it’s in, some of the words spoken just seemed out of place in the book.

I neither loved it or hated it, but again it was a quick little read
