This collection is very unique and important. A lot of poetry I read, including my own, focuses a lot on mental health or ones own happiness / memories / connections etc. However, this book goes even wider than that. It looks at everyone. The issues in the world. "This must stop" - a much needed reminder that while some of us have the ability to hide away, some of us do not. "Choose your identity" - the most simple of words but the biggest impact... "Birthplace = Earth" These poems remind us to look beyond ourselves and into the bigger picture, which is so important.
However, it also reminds us that to love and appreciate the world, and give it the comparison it needs... We need to love ourselves. We see that in the poems which tell us to let ourselves in, to treat everyday as a rebirth, to slow down in this busy environment and pause, think, reflect.
We must see the world, but first we must see ourselves.
Alongside this, the author has filled the book with wonderful imagery and fonts. It feels like a love letter. From one soul to another. If you have the chance to get this in paperback, then I highly suggest it. It's a special book to hold and admire physically.
Poetry. Not for everyone. At least, that was my opinion before Emergence. Emergence is a rare chapbook of relatable poetry that speaks to the masses. The turbulent times we go through, the war, both inside us and out in the world - something palpable. Leeder's poetry book exhibits an openness and vulnerability, and it is clear that she has a deep desire to make the world a better place, which begins by healing ourselves - a message Leeder conveys with ease. It tackles deep human emotions as well as a broader, global consciousness, and asks us to seek our compassionate side and unite rather than divide. It is all here—the raw vulnerability, the connection to Earth and a universe beyond. Well done, Melanie. You have given birth to a poet.
