Brainrush #5

Ephemeral

Rate this book
Named as one of "IndieReader's Best Books of 2014!"

From The Wall Street Journal bestselling author Richard Bard comes the next highly-anticipated "Brainrush" thriller, a mind-gripping adventure that spans three continents and two books - "Everlast" and "Ephemeral."

A gifted boy forced to grow up too fast... A father who will do anything to protect him... A madman bent on destroying them both.

In Amsterdam, a visionary scientist is laying the groundwork for a cybernetic life-extension project that will transfer individual consciousness to a personalized avatar. Halfway around the world, his brilliant grandson is secretly planning to use the same technology to infiltrate the world's most secure networks. But the scientific advances necessary to perfect the brain-to-computer interface are slow in coming, too slow for the aging founder of the Everlast foundation--who may die before realizing his dream of immortality--and too slow for his ruthless grandson, who will stop at nothing to attain the recognition that is his birthright.

Caught in the middle are Jake Bronson and his seven-year-old son, Alex, whose combined mental gifts might provide the key to leapfrogging the impasse.

Jake's family and closest friends have been taken by a mysterious organization with access to every surveillance system on the planet. In this exciting conclusion to the Everlast Duology, Jake must lever every scrap of his own failing brain if he is to have any chance of evading capture, rescuing his loved ones, and stopping a madman's plans for global chaos dead in its tracks.

Following on from "Everlast", the first in the duology, this one accelerates the pace of action to a level where I found myself forgetting to breathe at times. Richard's story-telling abilities are nothing short of brilliant, and they keep you hooked from the first page.

Both this one, and its predecessor are slightly shorter than the books I usually read. Personally, I prefer a longer book. In this case however, I had both books, kindly sent to me as advance reader copies by the author, so immediately upon finishing "Everlast" I launched into "Ephemeral". The effect for me therefore, was like a single book, which more than satisfied my preference.

I strongly suggest to anyone buying "Everlast", that you pick up "Ephemeral" at the same time, especially if you share my preference for a slightly longer read.

All in all, an immensely enjoying read, and Richard continues to hone his considerable skills and rampant imagination, with this duology.

Top-of-the-tree stuff!!

This is part two of the Everlast duology and follows on from book one without missing a beat. Jake is trying to locate his family and boy you don't want to get in his way. In the meantime his Children are fighting a battle of their own. It is quite the thriller ride, fast-paced and it will have you laughing, crying, gasping, shouting at the pages and even cursing Richard Bard.

If you haven't read any of this series, I recommend starting with Brainrush and offer this advice - fasten your seatbelt and enjoy the ride.

Satisfying Conclusion. Originally, this book and its predecessor were called a "Duology" within the overall series, and in that sense, this book provides a satisfying conclusion to that two-book storyline (that I still feel could have been condensed into one book, even just taking these two books as is and combining them to form a 600 ish page book). It also does a good job of setting up the next book via a particular unresolved thread that leads to a blatant cliffhanger - so blatant that the author tags a note just a couple of lines later swearing that the story will continue. (As those of us reading years later already know.) Overall a great continuation to the series, and I'm looking forward to diving into the next book momentarily.

"Ephemeral" the next adventure in the "Brainrush" duology which I won from Goodreads/First Reads is a high-powered rush that begins with Jake Bronson and his friends breaking into Jiaolong's headquarters in Hong Kong where he believes his wife and children are being held hostage. But as always the madman is one step ahead of Jake, escaping to a small village in the jungle where he not only dangles the prisoners daring him to rescue them, but threatens to unleash software that will bring global chaos.

Strands of the plot not only follow Jake's struggle to liberate his family and friends, Frederik de Vries fight to end his dream of immortality, but also seven year old Alex's developing mental powers that will overcome the obstacles that stand in his father's way. The infusion of science fiction with a cybernetic life-extension project that goes awry and a "Passcode" program that threatens the economic stability of the world add fuel to the intensity and suspense of the adventure. The action never stops in a thriller that keeps you riveted from the first page to the last. Richard Bard's natural fluid writing style and realistic dialogue bring the adventure to life as Jake, his friends, and gifted son battle a paranoid megalomaniac and his three treacherous companions. Cleverly he creates a story that flows from the exciting action-packed plot of "Everlast" to finish in a fiery explosion in "Ephemeral."

The characters are unforgettable, growing in resourcefulness and cleverness as they're challenged at every turn. Jake Bronson haunted by guilt and remorse, his mental agility weakening without the "alien mini" shows gritty determination, empathy and selflessness while his son Alex matures, his protectiveness and loyalty to his father and family stronger as he struggles with the concept of killing another human being. The reader's introduced to Wong Huang-Fe a crime boss and the triplet's grandfather who's cold-blooded, merciless and power hungry. Like Jiaolong he will do anything get what he wants including using his lethal granddaughters to betray the genius. It is all these personalities and many more who add high-energy, passion and drama to this imaginative thriller.

The covers of both books are eye-catching and indicative of a duology I not only enjoyed reading but made me wonder if there was more to come. Richard Bard is definitely a writer to watch and I can't wait to see what he has in store next for his fans.

The conclusion to the Everlast portion of the Brainrush series was outstanding. I finished this book in record time because I couldn't put it down. The book had me more than a little choked up before it was over. I can't wait to see where things go from here because... wow... that ending. The Brainrush series never fails to satisfy my need for mystery and adventure. But, wow... that ending! ;-)

Another must read novel. I loved it!

Excellent

So much talent is spilled out in the Brainrush series. These books has so much action from start to finish.
There has to be a sixth book it simply cannot stop here, not like this. My mouth just dropped at the end.
If you are looking for a great thriller the Brainrush series is where you should start.
Keep up the good work Mr. Bard.

The plot is becoming bigger and grander and there's the introduction of new characters. Well true this is an action story and the action drives the plot for me it's more a character driven story. The characters make this a four-star book The action, is a little too grandiose and there's a lot of special help from friends. I wish I had friends I could do almost anything like this book has!

I just love these Brainrush novels. If you like high adventure and a little unbelievable in a story, you'd love these too. I could do with a little less talk about guns and weapons though.

I received a free copy of this wonderful book from Richard Bard for writing a review. I have not let that colour this review.

This is the second of the Everlast duology, being a follow-up to Everlast. It is important to be aware of this and to read Everlast before turning to Ephemeral. I am pretty sure that if you do read Everlast, you will definitely be wanting to go on to read this book!!

The Everlast series were the first books written by Richard Bard that I had read. I must admit to being more a reader of thrillers than of science fiction and I knew that this duology thriller would have a science fiction base. As such, I was not quite sure what to expect from this duology and whether I would find it too heavily based on science fiction. Well, am I sure glad that I read it!! Yes, it does have a science fiction base but is very much a thriller and rivals the best of John Grisham, James Patterson and Lee Child in how thrilling it is. I was totally blown away by the first of the series, Everlast, and was so keen to obtain and read the second, Ephemeral.

I must admit that I found Everlast to be my favourite of the two books. Don't get me wrong, Ephemeral is still an excellent book, full of great suspense, twists and turns and will have the reader totally captivated. It could well just be that my expectations were built up too high with reading Everlast as it was one of the best books I have ever read.

Ephemeral will appeal to all readers and will have special drawing appeal to gamers as gaming is central to the storyline. Richard Bard is excellent at developing his characters and you will find it almost impossible to not have great empathy for the main character, Jake, his family and his friends. The 'villians', at the same time, are incredibly easy to hate!

Whilst being a wonderful thriller and page-turner that can have the reader not wanting to put the book down, it does also explore some very important ethical questions. These include immortality (in which some profound statements are made), self-sacrifice and man's inhumanity to man. Without giving anything away, I really liked Richard's considerations of these.

In conclusion, I was somewhat caught in deciding whether to give this book four or five stars. I decided it was worthy of five as I did find it very difficult to put down and was always wondering what was going to happen next. I feel that a rating of four stars would have been unjust and only based on the fact that I found the first book, Everlast, incredibly riveting.

Tomorrow will see me purchasing the three books which Richard Bard wrote prior to the Everlast series. It would be beneficial to read these before the duology as they involve the same characters.
Richard Bard is definitely an author to look out for!!

Richard Bard has done it again...

This is the second book in "THE EVERLAST DUOLOGY BOOKS" and was just as good if not better than the first. It is also part of the "BRAINRUSH SERIES".

Mr Bard has a wonderful talent for writing a story that keeps you turning pages until you have no choice but to put down the book to get a couple of hours of sleep. He is a brilliant author and all of his books will keep you wanting more.

From start to finish this book has the reader on the edge of their seats wondering what's going to happen next. Jake has to save the day again and will stop at nothing to see that his family and friends are safe. He goes through so much trying to find out where they are located and at every turn things seem to get in his way.

Everywhere he goes there is someone there to try and stop him. Someone trying to capture him. But he wants to find his family and friends enough to do ANYTHING. His young son, Alex, daughter, Sarafina and other son Ahmed are together but Jake has no idea where they are, if they are safe or if someone has them along with his wife and best friends. Can he save the day again and if he does will he live to be with his family again or will he make the ultimate sacrifice for them all...

Believe me you will not be disappointed with this book or this series. It is definitely the best action, adventure, thriller I have ever read. I've loved every one of the Brainrush books and they do keep getting better and better. Now can't wait for the next book in this series to find out what happens. The ending only left me wanting more and more. Richard Bard has done a wonderful job of writing a series that will make you fall in love with the characters, cry when one dies or gets killed, laugh in a few places and cheer Jake on all the way...

I was lucky enough to be given both books in the Duology for my honest review and I honestly LOVED them both so much. Be sure to read the first three Brainrush books too. I read them first and that is how they should be read to get the full enjoyment of this story.

Another big 5 star rating for another Richard Bard, Brainrush book!!! To bad I couldn't give it even more stars....

Even as a trashy, easy read, this book stands out as one of the poorest excuses of a sequel as any. Why all the great reviews? ...or to be specific, a very few amount of overwhelmingly good reviews..Richard Bachman....oh...i'm sorry..i confused this with another fake name...i mean, Richard Bard...yeah, wow, not sure how i got that mixed up. So..guy who has a fake name so he won't get vegetables thrown at him in public takes time to have a group of unpaid people to read his books before printing. They either say,' yes, man', or he doesn't even listen. But the people feel special and so they hype his books and go around reviewing his crap...and since they think they are best buds and 'helped make the book', the rate highly and blindly. Dick Bard actually sings this at the top of his lungs in public at the end of each book, asking readers to 'let him know how you like the book in a review on amazon'....
the plot is re used from....guess what?! the first part of this story! Everlast and ephemeral should have been one book that was a bit shorter...then it might have just been trashy and not that great..but no, the publishers and "THE BARD" himself said,' let there be two!'. so there's two, filler filled pieces of trash....you probably shouldn't still be reading this or dick's books anymore...

I got this book and the first book in this duology "Everlast" through the Goodreads giveaway program and, to be frank, I had my doubts. The books I've won have been a mixed bag. Now I am left wondering--why have I never heard of this author before? I'm also going to have to get and read his previous books. This book was all-action all the time and reads just like a movie. In fact, I'd LOVE to see a movie based on the book. Jake Bronson saved the world in the past, but practically nobody knows it. Now his family and friends have been kidnapped and the reader must follow various storylines as they all converge in a moment that may determine the fate of the world again. Violent? Yes. Fast-paced? Extremely. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat and, despite its "duology" description it darn well better lead to more books. The book has everything I love--heroes who are willing to sacrifice everything for friends, family, and the greater good; clever plot elements that keep you guessing; and unabashed right and wrong out there for everyone to see. In many ways it reminds me of the early Alistair Maclean novels which I adore. Fabulous book. I'm recommending this author to family and friends.

Ephemeral is the second novel in Richard Bard's Everlast Duology Series and we once again join forces with Jake Bronson and friends Lacey, Pete and Skylar as they arrive in Hong Kong searching for Jake's family and best friend Marshall.

So, Game on. Back on that roller coaster of thrills and spills, chock-a-block with action, suspense, danger, cutting edge technology, superb characterization and multiple strands in the plot line that all weave together to produce one fabulously exciting, fast paced and sizzling thriller.

Richard Bard you are indeed a master wordsmith- you NEVER disappoint. I was completely and utterly "in" the moment as I cheered them on, yelled at the baddies , laughed at some of their antics and shed a tear .

A Brilliant novel that comes highly recommended. I for one can't wait for the next.

To understand what is going on in this phenomenal book, 1st you read Brainrush, by Richard Bard, then The Enemy of My Enemy (Brainrush 2), after that, Beyond Judgement, then Smoke and Mirrors (Jake Bronson 4, of which all these are), then Everlast and FINALLY Ephemeral! And during all this reading, you will gasp, laugh, cry, hold your breath, clap a hand over your mouth, get watery eyes, wonder how the hell they did it, think they just CAN'T do it and have more emotions than you ever had in reading any previous fiction book, I promise you! All the previous book will be worth it to reach this one - and then, there's the final two books coming out soon! The series is ending! I don't know about you, but it will seem like the death of family members to me, to know that there will be no more Jake Bronson and family and friends anymore. I thoroughly enjoy every moment with them!

I'm still trying to wrap my brain around it.

This is a Science Fiction/Techno-thriller with a twist of Family Drama.

Jake goes all out to locate his family and missing friends. The young man known as Dark Matter wants Jake to find them but for an entirely different reason. Will Jake be able to save the people he loves or will evil win?

This story is full of twists and turns all the way to the end that even I didn't see coming.

This book is for Mature Audiences due to Violence.

The concluding part to the Everlast duology, see Jake rushing in to save his family and friends. With new allies helping,Jake infiltrates the base but is caught up in Jiaolong's trap, but after Jiaolong's is betrayed, Jake sees his chance, but at what cost!! A good follow up series to Brainrush, left with the set up for more.

Wow! This was an exciting ride! Just a good as the first book (and that is high praise) it didn't ease up on the action. I really hate reviews that tell you all about the plot as it tends to spoil it for me, so I'll only say that you will be cheering Jake on as he tries to save the day. I'm a huge fan of this series - cannot recommend it highly enough to do it justice!

Perhaps I'm growing bored with this particular story formula. I've read a number of series where every book has the main character and his friends battling against a super-villain's group, and they're all starting to blend together. I found my mind wandering way too much while trying to finish Ephemeral. This kind of fluff is fun sometimes, but now I'm craving a deeper story.

This can't be the end!

I really hope there are more stories coming! This one was impossible to put down! Once again, it's Alex, his father Jake, their friends, and family taking on twisted megalomaniacs to save the world. There are sacrifices made along the way but all seems to be resolved until the last few sentences.

Please sir, I want some more.

A very gripping read

I devoured this book. So well written and engaging I just could not put it down. Hardly a dull moment anywhere in the book. My one and only fault with it was the ending..too Hollywood. Back home and safe then a final page to turn it all upside down and end with the opening of a new story sequel.

A great read.

Another great book in the Brainrush Series. Non-stop thrills, heart-stopping suspense, and just plain heart. This is the first time I've had to wait to read the next book in the series (not available until 2017), and it's killing me. If you're already up to reading book #5, you know what I'm talking about.

Another smashing installment.

The saga continues and the pace never lessens. An amazing adventure that incorporates action, adventure, high tech, love, kids and relationships. Oh, forgot, science fiction and aliens too. Waiting on the next and maybe final installment is driving me crazy.
