The company offers to preserve human personalities in the Cloud. Its digital residents recognize their loved ones, share memories, and wait for the next visit. For families, it is a way to keep someone they cannot bear to lose. For those on the other side of the screen, it is an existence no one could have prepared them for.
Now the Genesis project is preparing the next a return from the Cloud to a new biological body.
Researcher Laila Arman is invited to take part in the experiment. The man they hope to bring back is Richard Stone, the founder of the technology millions have trusted with their hope of surviving death. If it works, he will be able to feel another person’s touch, walk in the rain, and share a room with someone without a screen between them.
But a successful procedure will not prove that the man who returns is truly Stone. Nor will it explain what remains in the Cloud.
As Laila grows closer to him, these questions begin to threaten the future she wants with a man she is afraid to lose. Memories can be preserved. But that leaves unresolved who the person carrying them really is—and who has the right to decide their fate.
