Hey neighbour! I’m a lifelong fan of stories where everyone gets their happily-ever-after and have been a voracious reader of everything romance since I was tall enough to reach my mom’s bookshelf. I write small town romance with plenty of heart, humour and a dash of heat. Sometimes with a dash of magic, mystery or suspense.
This was a short quick read that I liked. Isaac MacAllister’s life revolves around building his business and doing his best to give his daughter Sara a strong sense of family. Over the years he’s had to learn how to keep their little family together on his own. Christmas blogger Jenna Murphy wants to get away from anything to do with Christmas. She goes to Big River Lodge to figure things out the lodge is isolated, she has her own private cabin, and no one in her family will know where she is. Her first evening soaking in the hot tub on the deck. A knock at the door disturbs her but as she opens the door a gorgeous outdoor man is standing there. Turns out Isaac is the owner of the lodge he is divorced with a young daughter while out taking a walk she hurts her knee. This was a pretty good short quick read. This was my first time reading this author this book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book.
This had so much potential as well as a lovely cover, but I ended up with a profound sense of being cheated somehow.
The reason? The characters never really came alive to me - they were nice enough and all the right ingredients were there, but it came out half-baked somehow as if the writer wasn't that invested in the story.
The subplot (little more than a minor addition) with the 'evil' brother was pretty thin and had virtually no sense. Why on earth did Jenna not warn Isaac about her brother straight off? And how did he manage to find her and what did he need the money for anyway? And then he is conveniently written out of the story without another thought.
There were too many 'to be continued' moments in the book for me to like it. Too many questions left hanging in mid-air waiting for the next book in the series. And then it finished at 83% just when I thought I might get some of those questions answered.

This is the best Christmas novella I have read in a long time. The characters, setting, and narrative made me feel so festive, and everything simply fell into place for a potential happy ever after.
Who doesn't like the idea of a hunky, single Dad taking care of you when you're injured and alone? Even better when he has the hots for you. Isaac was an endearing character, and I could visualise his lifestyle with his daughter Sara and the small town they live in where everyone knows everyone. Despite her lifestyle before, Jenna's character made the easy transition into Isaac's world, and I could well believe the ending. That brother, though. Some people are just assholes.
I devoured this book in one sitting. I highly recommend this read to any romance lovers looking to get in the Christmas spirit.
This had most of the bells and whistles I look for in my books. Isaac runs an escape from reality type place one could say. Isolated out in the woods, secluded cabins. At least this is what Jenna has in mind when she, in an attempt to escape her normal hectic life style. She has just sold her business and drives to Rivers End. Than she meets Isaac let's just their first meet was hysterical. Not only did Jenna have pillow hair but in the spirit of the season a pair of festive flannel PJ's. You have to read that for yourself. I found this on the freebie list and it was time well spent.
I wouldn't call this one a steamy romance but a clean, heart warming romance. Isaac is a man once burnt and left with a 6 year old daughter, Sara. She is a nice touch to the story for me because she brings in the spirit of the holiday and oh when Isaac's family arrives Sara's real Christmas wish had me rolling. So true to how a child can be so innocent and honest without realizing what the full extent of their words meant. It was a delight from start to finish and left me curious to what Tipsy (Book 2) has in store for us. This could be a standalone with our couple willing to pursue a relationship. I'm not clear if it is focused on Isaac, Jenna and Sara or Lucas in the next book. Lucas is uncle to Sara and also brother to the woman who abandoned Sara and cheated on Isaac. He is not a popular fellow among Isaac's sisters, but I have a feeling there is something there between him and Shannon. Enjoy!
Loved the feel good vibes of this story. Looking forward to reading more to find out what happens with Jenna and Issac and the rest to the family. Getting more and more into the Christmas spirit while reading these books.
As unexpected amounts of snowfall blanket their world to the point of power outages, a city girl who never had a happy family holiday seeks escape from the Christmas bustle. But the sight of deer tracks lures Jenna off the pathway, onto crutches and into family celebrations, baking, crafts and even school pageants. CJ has a knack for realistic dialogue, and captured the innocent charm of a six-year old's hope for a new mom from Santa. I enjoyed this delightful romance with a few chuckles.
"She'd been an awfully good girl for many years in a row now. And this one perfect Christmas Eve with Isaac was going to be her reward." Bring two lonely people together in a small town at Christmastime and expect the sparks on the log fireplace to fly. But even with all the Christmas chemistry in the air, things don't get off to an easy start for Jenna and Isaac. A dislocated knee and a ne'er-do-well brother with a bit of blackmail on his mind bring complications. Fortunately, these can be overcome and C.J. Hunt's "Silver Bells: a Rivers End Romance" rings out a sweet, satisfying ending.
I enjoyed the story, but I was disappointed that the story between Jenna and her brother was not further developed, and to me there was not enough development of the climax of the story. I felt like I was left hanging without further details of how Jenna and Isaac's relationship would develop.
I was enamoured with it as a child, of course, but things changed as I grew up. The fact the whole religious story was being overwhelmed by crass commercialism was bad enough, but people spending tons of money buying gifts didn’t appeal to me. I felt like we, as a society, were missing many of the important points.
Then my best friend died on Christmas Day. That pretty much did me in.
“Jenna Murphy had one goal for this holiday season - to enjoy ten days of a completely Christmas-free existence.”
That’s MY girl! Get away from it all and soak in the hot tub. This is why I love Jenna Murphy.
She arrives at the Big River Lodge with the express purpose of avoiding Christmas and all things holiday-related. And she’s earned that break – 1,825 posts in 1,825 days about Christmas? What started out as a labour of love, became a source of income and, eventually, a successful business she was able to sell. OMG, I would have run screaming long before she did. That being said, she’s landed on her feet after having walked away – she just needs to figure out what she wants to do next. She has purchased a condo in Vancouver and is planning to settle there after the holidays. She is also hiding out in the cabin in the woods on Vancouver Island to get away from family. Some of us have those relatives who we go out of the way to avoid. Again, she’s a woman after my own heart.
As we know, things don’t always go the way we had planned.
The owner of the lodge is Isaac MacAllister. He’s a loving dad who cares for his young daughter and the best way for him to do that is by working and living in the same place. The property enables him to be close to his daughter Sara, and he has a family who supports them. He’s a good host, and showing up on Jenna’s doorstep the day after she arrived with breakfast was just part of the good service. Her choice of pyjamas? Well, he’s intrigued, that’s for sure.
And Jenna is quickly taken by the handsome man who is so protective of his daughter, willing to put her first. Circumstances force Jenna, Sara, and Isaac into close circumstances. As someone who lives away from the big city and knows British Columbia’s woods often have storms that take out the power – I understood this problem.
Jenna did do one very irresponsible thing and although there was a good excuse, I cringed. It was great for the plot, but didn’t speak much for her intelligence and common sense. That being said…yeah, I might have done the same thing. It is noted, that Jenna “was stubborn, not stupid”. I liked that she was able to own up to making mistakes.
Of course Jenna, Isaac, and Sara spend Christmas together and Jenna even stays on long enough to meet the rest of the family – including Sara’s uncle Lucas. He had known about his sister’s infidelity, but had held his tongue to save Isaac from being hurt. Even now, four years later, he is still paying for that mistake. Isaac’s sister Shannon is hell-bent on making his life miserable, but he is dedicated to being close to his niece and rebuilding his friendship with Isaac.
This novella is Book 1 of The MacAllisters of River’s End, a series I look forward to delving into. I adore that these books are set in beautiful British Columbia, showing off the amazing Canadian wilderness as well as the small-town friendliness. The question is – will Jenna choose to turn away from the big-city to live the simple life?
Well, if there’s Internet, there’s a chance, right?
Suzanne T. Fortin is a new narrator to me, but I was impressed. There are a lot of interior monologues and I never had trouble distinguishing between what was being said inside the character’s head and what was being uttered aloud. Her voice for Sara was perfect and she gave Eli the perfect sleazy voice. My only gripe – and it is small – is that the point of view changes quite frequently, even within a scene. What I am incredibly grateful for, however, is that Suzanne paced the narrative in such a way that the pause was always there, letting me know a change was coming. Too often, narrators negate that pause and I, as a listener, am scrambling to figure out whose head I am in.
This is a great first novella and I am so excited to hear more.
In this story Jenna is stopping off in Rivers End for a non Christmas vacation, before the start of her new life without her blog in the city. She is determined to rest and relax and not spend one thought on the Christmas holiday around the corner. Upon her stay Jenna falls and hurts herself during a hike. She is rescued by the resorts owner Lucas.
Lucas is the proud owner a cabin resort in Rivers End. Lucas runs the resort left to him by his father and he raises his little girl Sara on his own. When a beautiful guest falls and gets hurt, he has to take care of her. As time goes on the two develop feelings for one another but try to fight them. But Jenna has a secret that will put them all in danger. Will Jenna move on when her time is up? Will Lucas have a hard time saying goodbye?
I loved the story, but felt it could have had more depth to it. I felt that the ending was kind of abrupt, cutting the story short per say. I felt it was a little rushed. The story had such a great plot to it. I did feel though as if the author could have added more to the story. It was almost like it was missing something.
The characters were amazing. They pull you into their world of romance and you can't help but fall in love with them. A quick cozy read. I can't wait to see what is in store for Lucas in the next book Tipsy.
Wow, there seem to be at least 3 different covers floating around on this one. I'll start with the one that my copy has on it:
This was a cute, festive read. The FMC is out for an “unChristmas” as she calls it, but despite that, it still completely drops me into the holiday season,
Early in there was a minor continuity issue and I almost put it down, annoyed. But I realized I was invested, even if I did figure out every single thing that would happen from the first chapter. It’s a cute, cozy, dramatic read, with a dash of suspense and a hint of romance.
A cute, quick listen, perfect for keeping me company during a workout. (Ended abruptly and felt a bit rushed but getting a taste of this little down left me wanting more … and that’s impressive since I’m not usually a big romance fan.)
3.5 stars. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Note: The narrator was great, 4-star performance.
I’m not sure how I acquired this but must’ve redeemed a code at some point, as I found it in my Authors-direct library. So thank you CJ Hunt, or whoever gave me the code!
Can’t believe I’m the first person to rate this book on here. I thought this was okay for what it was. I’m pretty new to the romance genre, and I think this book helped me realise that romantic short stories and novellas are not for me. Just so little time to develop a convincing relationship.
• The characters were pretty mediocre. I’ll forget them in less than a day, but they served their purpose.
• The concept and Christmas aspect is why I gave it a 3 instead of lower. It was some cute Christmas fluff that didn’t exceed my expectations but didn’t leave me disappointed.
• I liked the edition of a child in the mix. Sarah was so cute and sweet and she had some pretty adorable moments.
• The romance itself was alright. Very typical and nothing special, but cute enough for the holiday fun it was.
Overall, a fun and short Christmassy read but with nothing unique about it. If you’re looking for a very quick holiday read then you might want to pick it up, but I wouldn’t recommend if you want to read something different.
Jenna Murphy has sold her business that focused on creating Christmas festivities, so the last thing she wants on her vacation is to celebrate Christmas, as it symbolizes work. But the holidays are hard to ignore in the town of Rivers End, especially at the lodge where she’s staying. Owned by gorgeous single dad Isaac whose six-year-old daughter loves decorating for Christmas, Jenna finds herself drawn to the man, despite her better judgment. Isaac’s equally drawn to her, but past hurts make him resist any notion of romance until an accident changes things.
The characters in this novel are well-drawn and the realistic take on single dads as well as women with start-up businesses is something readers can relate to. I love the novella format as it eliminates unnecessary padding in the story. The subplot adds tension and introduces important background information on Jenna, whose family life is anything but happy. For busy readers in search of an uplifting, enjoyable read, I totally recommend Silver Bells for any time of the year.
Silver Bells: Rivers End Romance: The McAllisters Book 1 is by CJ Hunt. This is the start of a great series and one which keeps your attention. Jenna Murphy had come to this cabin to put Christmas behind her. She had just sold her online site which pictured something to do with Christmas for 365 days. She was simply tired of Christmas. Jenna had started the site in an attempt to do those things the normal family did for Christmas but now she was replete. A warm fire, wine, and reading in the hot tub. It started to be a dream come true. Her dream turns to dust when she enters a room filled with Christmas decorations. Obviously, someone wants to make sure she doesn’t miss it. An accident, a power outage, a precocious young lady, and a thief of a brother all conspire to make Jenna’s dream vacation something that doesn’t happen. Let the fun begin.
This is my first time reading CJ Hunt and I am so glad I did. I really enjoyed reading Silver Bells. This story is about Jenna who is looking forward to her vacation away from the Christmas holiday. This doesn't happen though when she meets Issac and his daughter Sara. I thought this was a quick little read. I loved all the interactions between Jenna, Issac, and Sara. I wish I could have seen more interactions between them and I want to find out if anything else happened with Jenna's brother. The only reason I gave the book four and a half stars was because I wish it was longer. I wanted to read more into the story. I can't wait to read the next book by this author. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I love holidays and romance. Silver Bells is about a Christmas blogger named Jenny who decides to take a vacation in Rivers End to get away from the city and all the Christmas shopping, decorations and parties. She just wants to relax. Only that ain't happening. Her suite is filled with decorations and she ends up injuring her knee and walking with crutches for the rest of her stay. Her idea of fun involves sex and hot tubs and when she meets Isaac her dreams just may all come true. Gorgeous! Loved it.
A somewhat predictable romance in which a young woman goes to spend Christmas in a rented rural cabin, only the snow causes a power outage. The owner of the cabin invites her to stay at his home with himself and his daughter, plus of course, there will be more family arriving. Light and easy to relax with, long enough novella to get to know the characters. I would have liked the writing better if the author didn't keep using the weak 'it was' and 'there were'. We don't get to know the location other than two homes but apparently this starts a series. This is an adult romance.
I really loved this story, but I wished it had been longer, at the end. Our leading lady changed her mind three times in ten minutes as to the rest of her life, and left a cliffhanger ending. I had to buy the four book set to get the ending, so that means I have two of book one. I feel this should be up front before you buy the book on a separate basis. It is a good story, so I want to finish the story, but it is a sneaky way to sell more books. It says each story can be sold as stand alone, but they is not true, if the story doesn't play out in full, and leaves a child in possible danger.
This book one is a great start to what should be an exciting three book holiday series. This story lays the groundwork for our protagonists, Jenna, Isaac, and his six year old daughter, Sarah to meet and spend Christmas together then she has to decide if she's going to proceed with her plans or change them. Will she or won't she? This is a strong book one and therefore am wholeheartedly recommending this story for your reading pleasure. Enjoy! (Note: I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.)
Oh my gosh! This story is just so cute and so much fun. I spent pretty much the whole book giggling. I loved Jenna’s attitude about Christmas – she’s not really a grinch she just needs a break from Christmas 24/7/365, all day, everyday. Isaac is an absolute sweetheart. A devoted single dad who’s also ready and willing to step up and help a damsel in distress. And Sara pretty much steals the show. You now what Hollywood says about working with children and animals… I’m just so glad I have the next book and can immediately dive in to read more about Rivers End and the MacAllister family.
A beautiful, well written, well narrated holiday romance read. Small town, single dad looking for love finds it in a woman looking to escape the holidays. Loved these characters and the difference in the family dynamics each brings to this read. The narration was smooth and easy to listen to and the story line was sweet, with just a pinch of heat and a HEA.
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review. *this review is based on the audio version of this read
If you’re looking for a touch of romance to fire up your holidays, CJ Hunt’s Silver Bells is a good place to start. Grab a glass of wine or a cup of tea and join Jenna Murphy in Rivers End, where a planned escape from all things Christmas is complicated by the handsome Big River Lodge owner, Isaac MacAllister, and his sweet five-year old daughter. Silver Bells is a quick read and a warm interlude on a cold, snowy night.
Silver Bells (A Rivers End Romance #1) CJ Hunt •Family What happens when family isn't what is all cracked up to be.... Well you go to spend the holidays in the mountains away from everything. And then there's a snow storm. What happens between landlord (Isaac) and renter (Jenna)??? Well you'll just have to read Silver Bells to find out. I look forward to reading Book 2 TIPSY, CJ has made a new fan. ARC received from Booksprout for an honest voluntary review
Nice with a touch of naughty. I love Christmas stories even when they're cheesy or bad. This was neither. A nice light fluffy read about two nice lonely people finding each other. There is also a little girl who speaks and acts like a little girl. Refreshing that. The ending was a little abrupt but the second is free on ku so the saga continues.
🎄Lovely, short and sweet holiday💚 romance novella, despite the leg cast!😯
Really enjoyable small-town romance featuring single dad hotelier Isaac, his energetic, craft-obsessed daughter Sara and Jenna, a paying guest who would rather avoid the Christmas trappings and trimmings, thank you very much! That is her plan anyway until Sara has her way and brings the holiday spirit into every nook and cranny. One villain in the piece actually does some good by giving Jenna plenty of time with Isaac and ....😏
The story is short but gets the work done; it's cute, hopeful, with mild heat, plenty of cuteness from Sara and a happy conclusion for the three and the town's business prospects too.
River's End is well presented and comes across as a community full of heart. The characters blend very well and are compassionate and I think these two are a little lonely for adult companionship. Their attraction is instant. Both of their past brings emotion and seals their bond. His daughter is so sweet. I am happy with their happy for now and look forward to reading what will happen next in this town. I listened to an audio version and was well pleased with narrator.
It's a very fast-paced novella about Jenna and Isaac.
Jenna takes a vacation to get away from everything, including Christmas. Isaac happens to be the owner of the cabins. He's a single dad, and when Jenna takes a tumble in the woods, he becomes her knight in shining armor.
It moved a little too quickly for me and left some unanswered questions (Jenna's dirtbag brother), but overall, it was okay.
I don't usually go for seasonally themed stories (yup, I'm a Grinch!), but I picked this one up on a friend's recommendation and read the whole story in one bath! It was wonderful. And I'm thrilled to learn that it's the first in a series that looks like it will have many, many linked stories! What fun!
