This graphic novel collects issues 1-5 of Doctor Aphra: Chaos Agent. The timeline is post-Empire where the New Republic is establishing itself. Renown rogue archeologist Doctor Chelli Aphra is on parole with an opportunity to freedom. But of course our favorite scoundrel just can't help but to steal a fine artifact to make a quick credit. Old habits die hard. When she is offered an opportunity to work with the New Republic to reclaim relics in the name of peace, she finds herself working with Rebellion icons whom she is already quite familiar, such as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Chewbacca. It's a new era and Darth Vader no longer looms over Aphra's fate. Does she have enough gall to change her own ways, or will she remain the same scandalous thief?

Doctor Aphra is one of my favorite characters and I'd really love to see her come to live action at some point. She is such a fun character, and her interactions with characters we know and love always make for a fun, rambunctious adventure. The art has some different shifts, depending on the artist for the issue. Mostly well portrayed, but I loved the issue with Krrsantan the most and how the story has its own little arc there, yet shares multitudes in its message. Overall an enjoyable continuation to Aphra's story that fans will get some enjoyment out of. Hopefully there are more rogue archeologist adventures to come!

Aphra is probably my favourite Star Wars character, so disappointed to say she felt rather neutered in this third, very short, outing.

I loved the original Gillen run and enjoyed some of Wong’s follow-up and while this five-issue series by Chen is not terrible, it doesn’t give Aphra much room to breathe.

It’s more of a loosely connected series of stories that pair her with the main original trilogy heroes than her own established cast of characters. So it plays out more as ‘Aphra & Luke’, ‘Aphra & Chewie’ tales rather than advancing her character into the post ROTJ era.

Issue five is the best, feeling closest to her previous solo outings, and could easily have been expanded to be the plot of the whole series.

I'm finding myself underwhelmed by the Disney comics set in the New Republic era. Perhaps some of the earlier Aphra comics weren't brilliant (and some were!), but at least they had momentum. Excitement. TOLVAN. Omg I miss Tolvan. Here, Aphra was paired with main OT characters and I... just didn't care for it. Hopefully the next Aphra stories will have some oompf to them.

Aphra's voice is there, but story is so empty. Aphra is great because she is unique and she has her cast, her mythology. She doesn't need to be paired with the Big3.

Doctor Aphra returns to my basement expectations - which seems to be a good thing, since those expectations were easily surpassed. Instead of Aphra and her million stupid hangers-on, we get Aphra solo, now working with the post-ROTJ New Republic government (against her will, of course). They've taken away the slicing hardware in her arm tattoos, effectively rendering her just an archaeologist/adventurer.

To juice the narrative, Aphra is teamed up with all your favorite, familiar Star Wars characters on goofy adventures. Honestly, it works fine. Each issue is a decently enjoyable mission for Aphra and Luke/Han/Chewbacca/etc. There's a gentle undercurrent about Aphra getting her tech back (ultimately with the help of her sister), which means that (perhaps for the best) stakes are never at the "galactic crisis" level. Fine stuff! Would read more!

Don't get me wrong, I like Doctor Aphra, I liked both her previous runs well enough. Even when I wasn't invested in the arcs, she was still fun

This was the most boring Doctor Aphra has ever been. This series just felt like it was cut short, with an uninteresting plot post-Jedi, absolutely no continuation of any characters or stories from previous arcs. A butt load of cameos for no reason that couldn't even make it interesting, and a never-before-seen sister who shows up in literally the last issue just to do nothing interesting.

This series should have had so much more potential than this... And I tried to get on board with it. The first couple issues were fine. You could just tell by the end it just wasnt up to snuff.

This volume of Doctor Aphra unfortunately pales in comparison to all the previous ones. This collection is basically Doctor Aphra Team-Up, with Aphra forced to work with various different Star Wars characters for one-off stories tied together with a loose reason for her to be involved. Aphra always seems to be under someone's thumb, and after shaking Vader and the crime family from the previous run, it would have been nice to see her out on her own for a bit.

Instead, we get two issues with Luke, an issue with Han, Chewie shows up, and then Aphra gets a random sister introduced for one issue. I think this book was meant to run for 10 issues like the other Star Wars title, but I can see why it was cut short. The stories don't really serve Aphra, the other Star Wars characters suck up all the air, and it leaves little room for her to do her thing. Having Aphra involved with the wider Star Wars universe has always worked in smaller doses, and tying her so tightly to it here really hurts her.

The art's okay, I suppose. Having three artists on a five issue series isn't a good sign, though. Gabriel Guzman draws the first three issues, which are a bit dark for my taste, and then Kieron McKeown and Steven Cummings draw the fourth and fifth. No one's terrible, but they're just kinda flat house style.

Aphra's probably my favourite new creation to come out of Marvel's Star Wars comics. It's a shame that this book didn't do her the justice I know she's worth.

I enjoyed the story and artwork in this. The pairing of Aphra with the heroes of the original trilogy always works well. The issues featuring her and Luke are always great. I also quite liked the issue in this one where she goes on a mission with Han. I think the idea of Aphra begrudgingly working for a New Republic artifact-hunting group is great.

Still, despite my enjoyment of the plot and the art and characters, there are glaring omissions in this mini-series that are hard to ignore. Where are Sana and Tolvan? What about any of the other side-characters from the previous Aphra series? Why are none of them so much as mentioned? Just and odd decision, especially since this mini is supposed to take place over the course of a whole year. On top of the decision to leave out the Aphra supporting cast, there's now a long-lost sister? Long-lost siblings is one of my least favorite tropes, so I was not a fan of the final issue of this.

Kind of a disappointment. It reads like someone in editorial didn't think Aphra could stand on her own, so she's teamed up with Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Chewbacca in a series of one-off stories that aren't particularly good. The art is quite muddled, too, with 3 artists over 5 issues. The first guy does a pretty terrible job with Luke's and Han's faces, etc., and the other 2 are no great shakes. I wish they'd go back to an Aphra-centric book and storyline, with her out there doing her own thing.

I went into this one with very low expectations and knowing that it was only 5 issues. I had heard that it was a mess, but what I found was pure Star Wars! It's fun! It's self-contained. It has a great ending which should be an excellent jumping off point for the next batch of Aphra storytelling. Seriously, don't skip this one!

The main arc in wich Aphra is working for DAGGER, retreiving stuff stolen by the fallen Empire is something i really like and i'm curious to further dynamics with her sister. But why did it need all this origenal trilogy cameos??? Luke and CHewies are fine, but the others feel tagged on for nostalgia.

There is a lot to like here: Good dialogue, a new status quo, guest stars galore, but all of it feels very "treading water" between Aphra's next big adventures, with no real stakes or depth. Still, some fun to be had in several self-contained little stories.

Issues 1-4 were a fun re-sorta-introduction to the character of Chelli Aphra for me. I briefly met her in the 'Battle of Jakku' series and I was surprised to learn about how many comic series she has dedicated to her. Ideally I would have went back to the start but since I'm trying to do a New Republic era project, I felt like I would be fine just starting here. I would say that judgement was correct, Chen gives you all of the basics of who Aphra is and I like her so far. She's a big personality.

We spend time with Luke, Han and Chewie in these first four issues which is always fun. It does make me wonder if maybe Chen and the other staff at Marvel thought that Aphra needed these cameos to boost sales, it will be interesting to see if the latter half of the series focuses more on her and some new characters. I wasn't mad about it, I like seeing the original trilogy stars, it just makes me think. The adventures they have went on so far were exciting and I like the focus on artefacts and their cultural heritage - that is what I'm studying right now at university. 4/5 for these issues.

Due to this being an ongoing series, it messed up my chronological read-through a little bit. I feel pretty good in my understanding of the timeline at this point though so I'll let them away with it. You can find all of my 'Star Wars' book and comic reviews here.

Issue 5 was a cute little side-adventure and I liked that it didn't rely on putting the usual main characters on the front cover, Aphra gets a chance to stand on her own. The plot would probably hit more for me if I had read her previous series and knew the backstory with her sister but for what it was, I enjoyed it. The art was lovely too, I liked the character designs and how nicely shaded all of the illustrations were. 3/5 for this issue.

edit: After writing that review of issue five I just went on Wookiepedia and apparently that was the final issue of this mini-series? Now I am seriously confused because it didn't feel like it went anywhere or advanced the overall story in any meaningful way. What was even achieved? I liked it but now that I realise it is over I'm like damn, what was the point? Literally assumed we were only halfway through. Much to think about but I'm lowering my overall rating to a 3/5 after this revelation.

I was late to the Doctor Aphra fan club, only discovering her this past year as I read my way through the Star Wars timeline. This graphic novel caught my eye and I decided to grab it and give it a read. A wonderful addition and fun to see all of the familiar characters in play here. The art was a bit sharp/blunt for my taste but the stories are fun....she's such a great character with her sharp tongue! I'll definitely be reading this again.
