Four swoony heartwarming stories
All four of these stories had a wonderful balance of humor, heartwarming love, real life issues, and spice. The main characters are portrayed as real, relatable people who have flaws, but are really just trying to do their best as messy humans. Humans who often have some scarred and bruised edges but whose jaggedy pieces ultimately fit beautifully together. These heartwarming and healing romances were well written and included engaging dialogue, three dimensional characters who grow, and captivating storylines as shown through sweet moments, spice, laughs, supportive friends, messy families, painful pasts, big feels, and swoony love.
You’re so Extra
I fell directly into this story on page one and only looked up after the last word. Delia and Lucas are both relatable and likeable, bruised but not broken humans who are easy to fall in love with. Delia makes her living as a dog walker, a mermaid for children’s parties, and a hired granddaughter. She is sweet, bubbly sunshine covered in glitter and is excited to be an extra in a movie being filmed locally which stars her HS crush, Jeremy. She’s sure the universe has a reason to put her there. Lucas is also an extra in the film at the request of his friend, Sinclair, who also stars in the movie. He recently imploded his family’s business by being a whistleblower and he’s now working as a house flipper with a trust fund. He is grumpy angsty guilt. Delia and Lucas are paired together in the movie and there is an instant connection. This would be fine but Delia’s best friend died because of Lucas’ family which complicates things.

I loved this fake relationship healing romance. The combination - whew - had me deep in the big feels and made the book unputdownable. Shauna is a clay sculptor who as dumped by her last BF for her former friend. She’s agreed to be a bridesmaid for their wedding and needs a date for all the wedding fun. Leonard earns a living by flipping houses, he’s had a hard life and not always made the best choices. When Shauna’s grandmother tells people Leonard is a doctor and Shauna’s BF they decide to lean into the fake relationship and mess with the bride and groom in the process. Their relationship develops organically and naturally as they spend time together.

I was also feeling all the things while reading this one. Danny is a neurodivergent computer coder who has lived and worked in the same apartment rent free with one of his best friends for a decade. He is a quiet, regulated introvert. When his friend moves out to live with his fiancée, the fiancée’s sister, Mira, moves in. Mira owns and runs Glitterati, a loud, disco ball themed glitter covered bar. She is bright, loud, and chaotic. On the day Mira moves in, she falls down the stairs and breaks her ankle which requires surgery. This necessitates her to not work, stay off her foot, and basically stay in the apartment where Danny spends all of his time. This forced proximity of two complete opposites creates an incubator for sexual chemistry, allowing them to really “see” each other, and to form deeper connections between them. I loved the push pull between them, both fighting the inevitable, the references to Rear Window, the aching self-doubts, and the underlying subplots of intrigue. It was all combined into delicious perfection.

This book. The banter. The delicious smexy tension. The forced proximity. The feels. The big, big feels. I was here for it all. I loved, loved Shane and Ruthie’s best friend’s sister, single mom, marriage of convenience, healing romance. Shane is a lawyer who recently quit his job with his high powered firm on principle but he’s been black balled and having a hard time finding a job. Ruthie is a hot mess single mom who is having trouble making her big ideas work. Ruthie and Shane have known each other since they were kids and they’ve been sniping at each other almost as long. A law firm mistakenly thinks Shane, Ruthie, and Ruthie’s daughter, Izzy, are a family and offers Shane a position because he’s a family man. To sell the lie, Ruthie and Shane agree to a short marriage of convenience, him for the job and her for the health insurance. Of course, things get complicated quickly and what follows is a wonderful journey of baggage unpacking, inner voice finding, and life course correction.
