A great book! From Paris to Bogotá, from Manila to Kampala, it is impressive to see how women as political decision-makers, urban and transport planners, or activists are making our cities more livable, resilient, and inclusive. Melissa and Chris Bruntlett conducted interviews with urban changemakers in eleven global locations and profiled them in this book. An inspiring and motivating read that shows how courage, creativity, collaboration, and resilience can bring about a sustainable transformation of our cities. The future of the city is female — or, as the book aptly puts it: “When cities are built with women in mind, they become more livable for everyone.”

“Women Changing Cities” by Melissa and Chris Bruntlett is an inspiring account highlighting how women in politics, urban planning, and advocacy worldwide are driving transformative change to create more livable, equitable cities through mobility strategies focusing on cycling, public transport, and walking. The book presents compelling international case studies demonstrating how female leadership breaks through traditional barriers to reimagine and reclaim public spaces for diverse users.
Rarely do books on urban transformation include cities from Latin America, Asia, and Africa as examples of transformational change, making this book’s global scope both refreshing and necessary. Case studies from Bogotá, Manila, and especially Tirana, Albania, and Kampala, Uganda, stand out for their innovative, locally rooted solutions that prioritize inclusive, people-centered mobility.
