Nancy Clancy takes the field in New York Times bestselling team Jane O’Connor and Robin Preiss Glasser’s sixth Nancy Clancy chapter book. Normally Nancy doesn’t like dressing like everyone else. But wearing a soccer team uniform—well, that’s different. Nancy adores being on the Green Goblins—she loves cheering for her teammates, sharing refreshments, and painting her fingernails bright green before every game. If only she wasn’t cursed with slow legs! All Nancy wants is to be mediocre—or maybe even a little better than average. Will she reach her goal? Here’s a brand-new chapter book with plenty of humor and sports action, written expressly for kids like Nancy who aren’t the star of their team.
Fans of Fancy Nancy will love joining Nancy Clancy in the latest edition to the chapter book series!
Since the publication of Fancy Nancy, Jane O'Connor's closet now boasts so many boas, tiaras, and sparkly ensembles that sometimes friends do not recognize her on the street. She still resides (that's a fancy word for lives) in New York City with her family and their canine companion, Arrow. --from the publisher's website
MY FAVOURITE. I LOVE this book in the series ore than anything. I still want to be in a friend group with nary and Bree to this day, they are just so cool.
Nancy Clancy Soccer Mania is the sixth book in the Fancy Nancy chapter book series for kids.
I have read all of these chapter books with my niece who is now ten and we have enjoyed them all.
This book focuses around Nancy and her soccer team. Normally Nancy is good at most things. But she is below average at soccer. Her goal is to be mediocre.
We get to see Nancy playing soccer with her best friend Bree. It was an enjoyable continuation to the series. Although I would prefer to watch her do things that she excels at (school, mysteries, dressing up, dancing...). There was really no mystery in this book. And I love it when she solves a good mystery.
Nancy and Bree are both on a the same soccer team, except Bree is a wonderful player while Nancy wishes she could at least be mediocre. That doesn't keep them from being friends and cheering each other on though. Will Nancy improve enough to help her team to victory?
Nancy and her soccer team cannot seem to win a game. Though she is not one of the better players, she decides to try to move up from average to mediocre. She makes an incredible play in the final game of the season that improves her rating. This is book six in the Nancy Clancy series of chapter books for readers. Fans of Nancy will enjoy the new installment of Nancy’s antics. Cute black and white illustrations and easy to read text will keep the reader turning pages. The interactions among her friends are amusing and realistic. This would be a great addition to the easy chapter book section of the elementary library. Recommended for grades 2 through 4.
This was so fun to read with my soccer girl! We love Fancy Nancy and this is the first chapter book we read but it won't be our last. In this book, Nancy is playing soccer and she's not very good. Her best friend, Bree, is but her friend Lionel (on a different team) is not either. Her dad is the coach and we get to see some games in action and we really enjoyed it. However, I really wanted a little more emphasis on "it doesn't matter how good you are as long as you're having fun". There is a lot of self shaming and even other kids talking about how bad Nancy and Clara (another girl) are and there was some redemption in that but not as much as I wanted. Fun read!
I do not like the chapter books as much as I like the picture book Fancy Nancy. The chapter books are told in 3rd person, while the picture books are in 1st person, which makes Nancy more charming. There also aren't as many fancy words in the chapter books, and that's one of my favorite parts of the picture books. Maybe it was this particular subject, but this felt like a slog every time we sat down to read it, and my daughter didn't seem that interested in pulling it out.
I found out just a few days ago that Nancy Clancy is in chapter books now. I read the basic trade books to my second graders before retiring several years ago. I should have begun with the first, since this is the sixth, but I thought the soccer theme would be good - and it was!
We're not a sports family so we were pretty cold on this one going into it. But true to form, the story and characters (and some exciting voice acting from yours truly) soon got the ball rolling (pun!).
It is a really nice book. Nancy Clancy loves soccer but she is really bad at it. In the end there is a really big match will Nancy score it. Her friend Bree is really good at soccer. Nancy now does not want to play soccer what is she supposed to do.
Summary: This book was about Nancy and her soccer team. Nancy wasn’t all that great at soccer and just wanted to be mediocre (not horrible, but not great). At the end of the book, Nancy was able to help her team score a goal, and proved to herself that she wasn’t as horrible at soccer as she thought.
5 Higher-Level Thinking Discussion Questions: 1. At the beginning of the book, when Nancy’s teammates were telling her that she was not terrible at soccer, what are some things that they could they said instead? Why? 2. What could Nancy do to get better at soccer? 3. If you had to come up with a cheer for the soccer team, what would it be? 4. Why do you think Grace’s mom was so hard on her? How should her mom have acted towards her when she played soccer? 5. How do you think Nancy felt when she was able to help her team score a goal?

I love Nancy Clancy! I think this book was a great read, because Nancy is not a star soccer player, but she tries her best. She is learning as the season continues and by the end, Bree points out to her all that she has done in the game. That shows her progress and improvement and Nancy should be proud that she kept with it. It is a good lesson for today where everyone thinks they need to be the star.
Even though my daughter is into the teen years now we can't help but pick up the latest books from our favorite characters of years gone by. As much as we love reading about an older Fancy Nancy neither of us enjoy stories centered around sports. While there was of course a wonderful message about teamwork and friendship the soccer portions were not exciting to read.
In this book Nancy has a soccer game she wonders if she is a good soccer player or not. She cheers for her friend Lionel and his team the dolphins. Nancy plays against the Hornets and the Silver Streak! If you are wondering mania means crazy. Nancy and her Best friend Bree both get injurys at the same time! Read to find out more!
Joss gave this book 4/5 stars. She liked the way the characters looked in the illustrations. She also liked the end because Grace was nice to Nancy for a change. She didn't like how scary and weird Lionel was ("he was a little weird in the other ones but be was so, so weird in this one.")
