Redmond and Haze Mysteries #4

Vražda v maringotce

Rate this book
V cikánské maringotce, jež stojí na rozkvetlé louce kousek za kouzelnou anglickou vesničkou Birch Hill, je nalezeno tělo mrtvé aristokratky. A pohřešuje se ještě jedna mladá žena. Pokud chce místní inspektor Daniel Haze společně s veteránem americké občanské války Jasonem Redmondem případ rozlousknout, bude muset proniknout skrz mnoho vrstev lží, nebezpečných předsudků a zákeřných intrik.

Obě dívky nemají téměř nic společného, nenabízí se žádný zřejmý motiv, užitečných vodítek je pomálu a Jason s Danielem tápou – vraždili nejbližší rodinní příslušníci, všemocný gang nebo náhodný kolemjdoucí? A proč vlastně?

To write a novel was a dream of mine since I was a child. Life, my practical nature, and self-doubt got in the way, so it was decades later that an opportunity to write finally presented itself. I honestly didn't think I had what it takes to write a full-length novel, but once I faced the blank screen and my fingers touched the keyboard, everything disappeared except my characters and their surroundings, and suddenly I knew that this was what I was born to do.

Since then, I've written many books and have enjoyed some positive reviews, but sometimes, when I stop to reflect, I'm still amazed that I'm living my dream.

Finally Jason Ward sister wants to return to America and oh yes a wedding! There is so much going on in this little town! New characters are introduced!
Katherine Jason fiance helps out in this one as well as Daniels wife!
This is a fast paced mystery with lots of twists and turns including a opium den! I love this series for the nonstop action!

Another enjoyable entry in this series!

However, I will just warn that the g-word slur is used several times. Authentic to the time period in which it's set, perhaps, but I just wanted to mention it just the same.

What can I say? I'm hooked on the whole Redmond/Haze experience. The mysteries are almost secondary to the telling of the stories of their lives. Oh, and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to live in Birch Hill having to constantly look over my shoulder.

I love this series. The characters are fleshed out and while you don't have to read them in order to understand what is going on you miss out on a lot if you do not read them in order. An American surgeon who has survived the American Civil War learns that he has inherited a title in Britain and an estate who ends up acting as the police medical examiner for the area and gets pulled into mysteries. Talk about a clash of cultures when this democratic man rubs against the ingrained class system. It is funny. But he is also a very poignant character as he remembers heartache and the terrible horrors he lived through the Civil War. The other characters are well fleshed out too.

Overall, the historical details are good and there is some action as well. I highly recommend this series. This book is a solid entry with some important personal changes in the two investigators' lives. Oh, and the mystery is satisfying too. Go read!

Avid Reader

Lord Redmond and Inspector Haze are finally getting their personal lives together. The inspector and his wife have a baby daughter 85% through the novel, and Lord Redmond and Katherine marry in the epilogue, and are pregnant upon their return from their honeymoon. The man are required to solve the murder of the recently married In oven Chapman. Everyone blames the gypsies, but the murderer isn't a traveler. Milk Brody disappeared, and it's difficult to tell if she is a criminal or a victim.

Nobody behaves badly better than the local Nobs, in this tale of nearly headless nastiness. Daniel and Jason get up close and personal with the annual Travellers who attrach trouble like a magnet making identification of the good guys decidedly dicey. Another absorbing container of words thank you Irina Shapiro, much appreciated. :-)

Impressive. This author is a master of keeping her clues hidden, especially in this baffling case... aside from the Contemporary Annoying Americanisms, this one is Perfect for those who love historical (Victorian) mysteries.

Imogen Chadwick went into the Gypsy camp to have her fortune told, for she wanted to be reassured that despite her abysmal life being married for duty and to a man she did not love and who did not love her... aside from being forced to live with a formidable mother~in~law and two sisters~in~law (one was like her and was her friend and the other one taunted and despised her bland personality), she would still have a long and happy life. She was told she would... and yet she ended up garroted dead inside an empty caravan. About that time, the tavern~owner's niece also disappeared. Were the two events connected? A conundrum that Lord Redmond and Inspector Haze had to sort out amid a roiling cauldron of paranoia and xenophobia against the annual exodus of the same Travelers into the village of Birch Hill because the murder happened in the Romanis' camp... ergo, they were guilty. The case would have been solved faster had Redmond been aware that his ward, escaping his assigned reading lessons, was wont to roam the woods with his friend, the gamekeeper's son... but it was what it was.

On a lighter and most happy note, Sarah Haze gave her husband a daughter and Redmond finally married his Katie.

An excellent read

Irina Shapiro's fourth instalment of the Redmond and Haze mystery series was another brilliant read. Imogen Chadwick is found dead in a Romani caravan and Moll Brody, barmaid of the Red Stag has gone missing. It's up to Inspector Haze and his friend, Lord Redmond to piece together what little evidence they have to catch the killer. Did one of the Romani people commit the murder or was it someone closer to home?
This series of mysteries gets better with each book as the reader gets to know the characters of Birch Hill much better. On to the next instalment.

Wow!

Terrific series! Set in England in 1887. Captain Jason Redmond, late of USA Army , inherited his grandfather's estate and is now Lord Redmond. He is reluctant to assume the mantle of a useless aristocrat and helps solve crimes and acts as police surgeon with Inspector Daniel Haze. These mysteries are intricate, interesting, and well plotted. Wonderful reading experience! Read in order for continuity of relationships as Redmond adjusts to his new position in a society foreign to him!

I love This Series

I’m a Regency era groupie but stepping outside my comfort zone is worth it when you find riveting stories and characters like the ones in this series.

It’s plausible to me that Redmond was more than willing to go to England and essentially start over there. I also can see why Haze enjoyed his friendship and assistance.

These aren’t “Agatha Christie” murders. They are gritty and explicit so if that’s not your style, you’d better pass them by but if you like a really good read, join me. I’m a real fan.

Good mystery

This was a good mystery. Although, the story dragged a bit in places. As usual I loved the personal interactions between Lord Redmond and Micah and the rest of his unconventional household. I would have liked more interaction between Redmond and Katherine. I enjoyed the interaction between Haze and Sarah too. Redmond and Haze work well together and are now friends as well as colleagues. I look forward to the next book.

Good reading

I enjoyed this installment and the characters Ms. Shapiro has created. I find Daniels investigative skills becoming more honed with the help of Jason. I feel he will have a good listening partner in his wife, Sarah. I’m glad this book shows us happy moments for both Daniel and Jason. Would recommend this series to those who love the mysteries of this time period. Will continue to read the series and have purchased all of the books.

Great mystery as usual

Redmond and Haze make a great team. The cases they work are baffling and complex, but they always get their person. I also really enjoy the back stories of the two main characters. They are both saddled with sadness from their past which makes their camaraderie even better. Looking forward to the next book.

A good read as well as a stand alone book by the Author of several books with the same main characters. the introduction of the Romani Gypsys into the English small village and the accompanying prejudice's adds an interesting new flavor into the book. Jason and Daniel work together to solve one murder and the search for a missing women and it all settles out in the end.

These mysteries are really great. They are detailed and interesting. I can never solve all of it. The pacing is very good. I really enjoy the characters. The historical accuracy is good. There is a lot of detail without becoming overly involved with it. I find myself taking into the world developed by the writer each time. Can't wait to read more.

recommend

This book follows the previous ones with content to hold the reader’s interest. I’m relieved that the author elected to leave out the sexual scenes that seemed inappropriate in the last book. Once again a complicated case is solved by Inspector Haze and Captain Redmond. The Captain’s medical experience saved another potential death situation.

Justice is served

While I prefer stories where women are the detectives, I am enjoying this series with American-born Jason and Daniel, his English detective friend. These two are smart, thoughtful and kind. It is sad that their little village has to have so many murders, but each man has a good support system to see them through so that, in the end, justice is served.

Another interesting mystery for Haze and Redmond in their little corner of England. A local woman is found dead in the caravan of the visiting Gypsies. They called the police when they found the body, but the villagers all blame the Gypsies. DCI Haze does not think the Gypsies did it. And where is another local girl who is missing?

Good mystery.

Why would someone want to kill Imogen Chadwick? What danger could she possibly have posed to anyone, especially to the Romani, who’d be gone from Birch Hill in a few weeks, not to return again until next year? Who benefited from her death? And how was Moll involved? Was her connection to the Romani a factor, and was her disappearance related to Imogen Chadwick’s murder?

I’ve enjoyed all the books in this series. Enjoy the in-depth character development, especially their private thoughts. The only complaint is that Micha called kissing gross. Not something a person would say in the 1800’s

This period series is appealing in the view of some of the preposterous rules of etiquette and the extent of prejudice that existed. The main characters rise above these negatives while solving murder mysteries. Excellent fun reading.

Delightful series

I have a great fondness for this Series. The characters are well fleshed out, the mysteries are one of the best "cozy" books going. I recommend you start with Book 1 and work your way through. Lots happen in the books and it's nice to have the background.

Captivating

There really is something captivating about this series. Not a genre I would normally read but I've found myself spending many happy hours in the company of the characters as their lives develop while murders are solved.

Another great read by a great author. Once you get into this series you can't stop reading. Now I'm waiting for book #5 to come out. Loved it. Oh and I'll never tell about the plot or spoilers. Just give it a go. But start with #1 or you will have to do a lot of catching up.
