People are becoming trapped in the dark depths of the subway system. Not only that, the living dead and other restless ghosts are inhabiting the tunnels. The dimension of reality down below is a much different one than that of ours, is there no escape? A really well done manga that keeps the creep factor ramped up and action coming. Panel flow is easily readable and the artwork is great, stark black & white as well as some gorgeous color plates.

This was just okay. It reminded me of Hell Girl in both the format and the effect of it on me. This was a series of short stories (two were vaguely tied together) about hauntings in a subway tunnel. The dead souls living in the tunnel try to pull in the living, either out of revenge for being murdered or because they are looking to cause pain, and there is a guardian of the tunnels who intervenes on behalf of whomever he thinks is morally right.

The stories were just too short to make me feel the horror - I was hoping for a manga version of "Midnight Meat Train" or something. This is rated OT (16+) but there wasn't much to be concerned about, a couple of swears and a plotline involving two boys who were convincing young girls to date an older man who happened to be a murderer (reference to pimping, Johns, etc). Not even that much gore.

Bloody Dark

While not a bad manga the book follows a series of short stories all connected to underworld guide and pretty boy Seiya who seems to have always had a talent in seeing the flames within people commonly referred to as souls even when alive. Of course as the title declares all of the bad things happen underground where obviously the underworld would be away from the lights but not always on the metro line (with exception of the last story where the ghost sees him on the train and haunts him from there on out.)

Doing horror manga is never an easy process having not only a lack of motion but soundtracks commonly associated with horror on TV and in movies and volumes like this series seem to make up for a lack in imagination by showing the reader plenty of gore to make them uneasy like a 80s horror flick. All in all even though every story is not gory there is much darkness whether it is jealousy, vengeance, or even trying to find an end to the pain of living so if death, suicided, and gory scenes upset you I would suggest avoiding this series since that seems to be the spirit of it (pun totally intended.)

Tato manga byla úžasně strašidelná a hlavně nebyla jako ty nudné holčičí. Ty ilustrace i příběh byly úchvatně propracované. Pro fanoušky bud hororu nebo mangy to ideální. Po přečtení už nikdy nepojedu sama v noci metrem. ;D

Creepy but I’d like to know more. First volume barely scratching the surface. Some pretty cool panels.

Stereotypically shallow manga...androgynous savagely-coiffed mystery men & girls in school uniforms, plus graphic dismemberment. Ah, the beauty of Japanese culture!

This was like twilight zone in a subway. I think it would have made a fun tv series. Maybe it is 🤔.

So basically a bunch of stories around the subway being a passage to hell. Not bad.

Dark Metro is an on-going horror anthology (we have the first 2 volumes) set in Tokyo’s subway. Ghosts, zombies, and other undead are waiting to punish humans who stray into their domain — and some of those humans have it coming.

But not all.

A guardian spirit named Seiya must protect the innocent, rescuing them from being pulled under trains — or worse. But he’s a tragic victim himself.

Dark Metro plays with the underground as underworld and pulls in familiar j-horror images and motifs (ghost children, scary hair), but familiar isn’t bad and Tokyo Calen knows how to make the subway setting work. And be warned, the art by Yoshiken is not for the squeamish.

“And then it’s darkness…”

This was fine. All the stories are a bit too short to get very involved with the characters. It feels like a less well-conceived version of Hell Girl.

The illustrations are great and the gore is on point, though. I’ll give it one more volume.

Short stories have never been my cup of tea. These are fast moving, sometimes gory and quite enjoyable. I won't probably be bying the next volume, though.
