Omg this book is so much yes!! I love a multi-person pov but to have 5 pov in one book is amazing. I didn't think I would like a dystopian magic filled book but this author draws you in quickly. While the FMC starts out seeming dumb but really she's very naive and confused. Thrust into the unknown and just trying to survive she makes some unlikely friends. This books leaves you wanting more from the questions left unanswered in the best way....is all this in her head or is it all real.
I was very confused starting this, but I still had the pull to continue reading and by the final third I was so invested! This is a great start to a series and I cant wait to read more.

Delusions & Desires is the first book in a dystopian, reverse harem series with MM elements. This book was a wild ride, so you better buckle up!
The whole concept of this book was special. Quinn, the FMC, thinks she is undergoing brain surgery, because her whole life she had these episodes and she thinks she‘s insane. As she awakes, she finds herself in a post-apocalyptic Scotland where magic is real and fertile women are commodities.
Quinn had me a bit on the fence. On the one hand, I found her to be quirky, likable and at times badass, but on the other hand, her constant refusal to ask the simplest questions was frustrating. Her men seem to be a great mix, and my heart just goes out to Cayden! I‘ll always have a soft spot for the lost boys! Every one of the side characters seemed to be really interesting; I can‘t wait to get to know the backstories of Evelyn and Brit better. The world setting was intriguing and I really liked that this book kept me guessing at every turn. I have no clue what‘s going to happen in the second book and I already know I‘m going to enjoy the surprise. All in all, I maybe would have preferred a little less mystery and secrets and knowing a bit more about everything, but half of the fun was not knowing… so meh… Fun 1 : Controllfreak 0!
If you enjoy your books dark and a bit on the crazy side, but also with wit, this one’s for you!
If needed, please make sure to read the trigger warnings.
Thank you to Kate Messick and @the.author.agency for providing me with an ARC. All opinions are my own.
I quite enjoy a dystopian story, as I live in Edinburgh I was able to picture the futuristic Edinburgh, Kate Messick describes in her story. The story starts with the architect healing Quinn, our leading lady. Quinn wakes up after being healed & believes she is imagining everything & everyone around her. Whilst in the real world she is currently under going brain surgery. When navigating her life in this new futuristic time, she discovers that magic is all around & everyone is able to use it. In her real life magic doesn’t exist & she is made to believe she wasn’t of sound mind, hence the brain surgery. Quinn makes some new friends Everly & Brit & they become quite the trio with some funny antics. In this new world Women only make a small percentage of the population, so are rare & wanted commodity. Quinn finds herself with many suitors, Quinn, Rowan & Cayden who she is attracted to each one & another who starts off as friend & quickly becomes a stalker, he will be one to watch in the rest of the books.
This is a good first book in the series, it introduces you to the characters & sets the scene/story for the rest of series which I look forward to reading. I need to find out is this really all in her mind or did she mange to magic herself to the future!!
This is my first book by this author and the story for me was a 3 🌟 slow burn, fantasy with some MM, and I think it's shaping into a reverse harem romance story for the FMC. This one is a little sensitive because the FMC (Quinn) is a 24 year old inexperienced (virgin) girl diagnosed with multiple personalities. She is human in the "real world." Her other self lives in a dystopian world where magic is real. The first few chapters were a little confusing and writing feels sporadic and clumsy but by chapter 15 (it's under 300 pages long) it finds a good pace and the story is engaging and the character building is good for the length of the book. There are triggers to be aware of, but everything mentioned is in a memory sort of way, not an active scene. 0.5 🌶 MM scene which doesn't have anything to do with the fmc as again its a slow burn and not sure yet who the mmc/s are going to be by book 4, so far there are 3 possibilities by the end of this one. The cliffhanger isn't devastating, but I am excited to keep going. The biggest problem with this book for me is really the start of the book. I like and prefer going into a book blind and if I hadn't actually read the synopsis to understand why it was so confusing at the beginning, it might have caused me to DNF in chapter 2.
I am excited to continue onto book 2 and see where the story goes. This is a new plot line for me, so I am enjoying the unpredictability of the real self vs. other reality.
Kate Messick's Delusions & Desires was a fantastic read. MFC Quinn has been dropped in a post-apocalyptic future, but she can't tell if it's real or in her head, which leads to some humorous situations. I sympathize with Quinn. She's had a hard time but still manages to be genuine with people even after her trust has been betrayed over and over. Quinn deserves a break, and this new world might be it. There are four guys in the would-be harem. I say "would be" because this is a slow burn. Alexander, Ezra, Cayden, and Rowan. At one point, I gave all of them the stink eye, but they're growing on me. Cayden, in particular, still has to overcome some things, but he has come the furthest.
The story is a weird mix of modern and medieval, with a lot of magic and a touch of humor. It was great. There was a fair bit of chaos. It felt like we were dropped into a story that had already been going on for a while. It was a little disorienting, but I think it was supposed to be. The world and the magic system were incredible. Everyone has access to general magic, but there's also specialty magic, and everyone is a little different. I loved the story. Between figuring out how the world worked and what exactly happened to Quinn before she showed up, I was never bored. The friend group was a hoot. Quinn managed to pull together a group of people who would normally be enemies, but instead formed real friendships. I'm happy that Quinn finally found people who support her no matter what.
The ending was good. It's not a cliffhanger (which I'm not mad about), but things are still left in the air. I have so many questions about Quinn that I need to have answered. I can't wait for the next book. I would recommend it to anyone who's looking for a new fantasy.
Delusions & Desires had me feeling like I’d fallen straight into someone else’s fever dream and somehow loved every second of it. This is so far from my usual lane, but the combination of dystopian magic, reverse harem tension, and Quinn trying to figure out what’s real and what’s not had me locked in. Quinn herself is such a mix — adorable and sharp one minute, then making choices that had me whispering “girl… please” at my book — but she’s impossible not to root for. And every one of the guys brings something different and necessary to the story, but Cayden absolutely stole my heart. I’m a sucker for the emotionally lost ones.
What impressed me most was how fully immersed I felt. The constant uncertainty, the shifting realities, the slow realization that maybe everything Quinn believed about herself was wrong kept me reading way later than planned. It’s dark, confusing, emotional, and somehow still funny at the exact right moments. By the end I felt wired, in that “I need someone else to read this so we can talk about it” kind of way. And book two? I’m already impatient. I know it’s going to unravel things I’m still trying to piece together.
Big thanks to Kate Messick and @the.author.agency for the ARC and all opinions expressed in this are my own and I am volunteering to leave a review. Delusions & Desires is a thrilling start to a dystopian reverse harem series. So buckle up for a wild ride! Quinn, the FMC, awakens from supposed brain surgery to a post-apocalyptic Scotland where magic is real and fertile women are coveted. Quinn's a complex protagonist who is quirky, likable, and badass, yet frustratingly hesitant to ask questions. The men in her life are intriguing, especially the lost and brooding Cayden. The supporting cast is equally compelling, with Evelyn and Brit's backstories needs and I beg to be explored. The world building is immersive, with twists and turns that kept me guessing. I'm excited to see where the series goes next. If you enjoy dark, witty, and unpredictable reads, Delusions & Desires is for you - just heed the trigger warnings!
Kate Messick created intrigue, mystery blended in a slow burning romance!
Quinn, our leading lady, undergoes a brain surgery and wakes up in a post- apocalyptic Scotland. It’s a mystery what’s real and what’s imagination and that makes it so great! I flipped page after page, with several thoughts coming up, but being surprised as the story continued!
Quinn develops a special bond with 3 guys… Kate Messick has carefully worked out the interactions and crafted a growing chemistry, erotical tension that will burn your cheeks, only by the thought of it.
This book is phenomenal in every way and I’m so ready to start reading the next installment. I hope there will be more Cayden chemistry 😍… 🤩
So it honestly took me a bit to get into the book. It is definitely kinda confusing at first, but I know it was done on purpose to reflect Quinn’s state of mind. The magic system and the world are certainly unique, and I hope The Architect is eventually able to accomplish his goals because it would definitely be a better world if he can. I really liked Ezra and Rowan. I mean, when she describes him as the Witcher, I can’t not love him 😏! Excited to learn more about them.
Magic was supposed to be a delusion. Instead, it’s dragged me into a future where women are owned, families war for power, and desire is dangerous. Disguised as a boy, I fall into the orbit of three men who make me feel terrifyingly alive.
A dark reverse harem romantasy with MM. Adult readers only.
This is a reverse harem, slow-burn novel with MM. It contains numerous triggers and is not suitable for sensitive readers. You can find the triggers
This was such a good book. I do want to point out that this book is not marketed as having an unreliable narrator, but it really does, which makes it so good.
I love diving into a book that keeps the world topsy-turvy. Quinn is struggling to separate reality from fiction and she drags us along for the ride. I feel that I am just as confused by what is going on as she is. The POV's from the different guys sorta help even things out just a bit, so we, the reader have a better understanding, hopefully, of what is going on.
There are several laugh out loud moments scattered throughout this book and the amount of questions that have piled up in my brain are insane. Is Quinn from the past? Is she a time traveler? A monster? The questions are endless. I no more know what is real than Quinn does and I love it.
Brody is going to be a Problem with a capital P. I do not see things going well with this character and I fully expect him to hurt Quinn. Rowan, (insert eye roll) is something else. Hopefully he does not allow his pride to cause him to lose Quinn. Cayden, okay, he is trying to be a good man. Being Quinn's bestie is a good start, he doesn't want anything bad to happen and he does truly care. Ezra, I could write a book on this one, but I won't. He needs a reality check.
I do have questions about the girls as well but I love what they are doing for Quinn. I seriously cannot wait for the next book to release.
What an intriguing and original storyline! I haven't read any books by Kate Messick but I was impressed with the plot and storyline. Each mmc was distinct enough that they don't all blur and are memorable. The fmc was likeable and I'm looking forward to seeing a bit more character growth in future books.
It was a little slow to get into but the pace really begins to build and some confusion around what's happening at the start is cleared up.
Definitely recommend starting the series as it is looking to have good potential.
Delusions & Desires is book one in the Tethered by Temptation series. I went into this book somewhat blind because at one point I knew but then I forgot what it was about lol.. I would say this is a romantacy with a dystopian feel. If I'm being honest I was a bit thrown off by the beginning of the book I wasn't really sure what was going on and I got slightly confused that said my child was moming me lol.. so maybe I just forgot with his distraction. Either way I recommend pushing through because the story is written well. It's entertaining, and held my attention. I hope to jump into book 2 tomorrow or the next day. Also read this series in order because this book has a bit of a cliffhanger ending.
Delusions & Desires isn’t something that normally falls in my comfort zone, but the blurb for this one pulled me in and convinced me to step put of my normal read. It’s a really unique concept with Quinn waking up after brain surgery and she isn’t sure if what she’s seeing is real. She ends up hiding as a boy because she finds herself in a world where women are commodities. You're thrown straight in and I was a little lost to start, but once I got my head round things I really got into it.
It’s a dark dystopian and it’s not a light read, but it’s different and I liked that. If you enjoy something a bit different, this one’s worth picking up!
Delusions & Desires is the first book in Messick's Tethered by Temptation series. This why choose, dystopian romantasy features Quinn, Alexander, Ezra, Cayden and Rowan.
Quinn is our heroine. She's a 24-year old woman who suffers from mental illness. Her alter-ego is Miss Q, a woman who believes she can perform magic. Quinn has been known to suffer blackouts, and has found herself in places with no memory of how she got there. Her father has been trying to help her throughout her life, and now, in the hopes of finally "fixing her" has signed her up for a lobotomy with Doctor Oz.
The last thing she remembers is being on the surgical table however she finds herself in a world she does not understand. She believes she has landed in a dystopian future created by none other than Miss Q. The world is no longer organized by cities. Instead there are families who struggle for power. Women have become commodities, where their main value is procreation. She has had a few scary interactions before finding herself in the Architect's Castle. It is here she meets the men who will change her life.
Alexander, a mentalist, founded his own family from those who had no where else to be. He welcomed others who wanted to join him. His partner, Ezra, is a combat mage. He has the ability to walk between shadows. He also happens to be Commander of the Architect's forces. Rowan is a General, and one of Ezra's trusted five. He is a Tate, which is a name that holds interest and has therefore been contracted to Lady Angela Moore as her sixth suitor. Last, but not least, is Cayden. Cayden is a master at runes. He is a Lawson, a very secretive and cult-like family. There is not much known as his family has a compound where people can neither get in, nor get out.
Messick has done a fabulous job creating this dystopian world where the world looks familiar and yet completely different. I was quickly pulled into the story, not sure what to believe. The story was captivating and the characters were compelling. I found myself devouring the story, keen to learn what was going to happen next.
Quinn is an interesting and quirky character. On one hand she is quite innocent and naive while on the other she is courageous and sassy. I enjoyed her interactions with the other characters especially while she believed herself to be dreaming. The dynamic between Quinn and each of the male characters is unique. She has chemistry with each of the men, however none of them seem to hold potential for being a true partner.
I enjoyed this first installment. Messick has pulled me into her world, introduced me to an array of characters, and planted the seeds which are sure to have me coming back for more.
This pulled me in so hard. I was literally sucked in from the first page. We are dropped off in what might feel as the middle of a story. Quinn is struggling to take things serious, because she is convinced her second personality (Miss Q) is pulling her leg. But as the story evolves, the illusion feels more and more real and she starts questioning what is the actual reality.
She finds unlikely friends, both amongst the more or less royalty and amongst the outcasts of what she realize is a sort of dystopian future.
Cayden becomes her trusted friend even though most others don't trust him or are affraid of him. While the Architect (Xan) is out cold from overuse of magic, Ezra tries his best to hold the fort (or, well! Castle). While doing that, he push Q in direction of certain people and try to keep her from others. It does not go over well with Q and trust is hardly given anywhere. When you don't understand the rules, it is hard to try to figure out where you even fit in. But freedom of choice is always important.
I'm super excited to read the rest of the series and I'm very relieved to see, that no more than 2-3 months are planned between releases. Way to go KM!
Anyways, loved the characters (annoyed I can't remember the 2 female friends names LOL), laved the pace and can't wait to get my hands on book 2.
Slight spoiler ahead: . . . This is very slow burn, not much spice until the very last (and it's the MM part going on) - unless you count a certain event on horseback (which was the only thing I disliked about the book. I'm a rider and I've literally never felt excited in that way on the back of a horse. I was tempted to draw away a start for that, but over all I just really, REALLY loved the book, so didn't).
Kate hooked me from the book description and it made me beg her for the book...in my head but hey isn't this book MAYBE in someone's head? Ugh I fell in love and I need the rest of the books now. Quinn has spent her whole life being told she’s broken, that the strange disintegration magic in her hands and the brilliant voice in her head are nothing but delusions. So when she “wakes up” mid-brain-surgery in a dystopian future ruled by magic, she’s convinced this is just another universe her mind invented. Except, the longer she’s there, the more real it all feels.
Watching Quinn navigate a world without fire or technology, where women are rare and magic is law, is an absolute ride. She stumbles straight into danger, friendships, and a group of frustratingly gorgeous men who each have secrets of their own. Ezra with his sharp edges, Cayden with his surprising loyalty, Rowan with his temper, and the mysterious Architect she can’t stop thinking about. The tension, the confusion, the slow realization that she might not be imagining any of this? Drool.
What I loved most was the unreliable-narrator chaos blended with rich world-building and genuine laugh-out-loud moments. Quinn’s trauma, resilience, and bold new choices make her incredibly easy to root for, and the found-family vibes from both the outcasts and the pseudo-royalty were perfection. The story ends with just enough answers to satisfy me....ok that's a lie. It answers enough I'm not angry begging for more, but also I have SO MANY QUESTIONS LEFT.
Tropes: ✨ Unreliable narrator ✨ Dystopian future with magic ✨ Slow burn ✨ Why-choose ✨MM ✨ Girl disguised as a boy ✨ Hidden identity ✨ Found family ✨ Time-travel (maybe) / reality-bending ✨ Forced proximity ✨ Trauma recovery + mental health themes
Thank you to Happily Booked PR for the gift of this book. I am voluntarily writing this honest review. DELUSIONS AND DESIRES is the first book in the TETHERED BY TEMPTATION series Kate Messick. Quinn has struggled with a second personality who is magical her entire life. She journeys forward in time to a dystopian future where magic exists in place of technology and fertile women make up only a small percentage of the population. As she tries to navigate a foreign reality she is drawn to three different men. This is an open door, dark fantasy romance with multiple POV, one scene of MM spice, and tropes that include “Reverse Harem,” Slow Burn Romance, Gender bending, LGBTQIA+, Found Family, Dystopian Future Scotland, Political Intrigue & Power Plays, Magical Soul Bonds, Magic, mental illness representation, and Trauma Recovery. I”m not a fan on the term “reverse harem.” I have checked the definition of harem and it does indicate a group of females sharing one mate, but I believe it should be a single person sharing a group of mates regardless of gender. I really enjoyed this book with an unexpected premise. The groundwork is being laid for the reverse harem, and I have no idea what the spice level will be, but I am enjoying learning the world as Quinn does. I do not feel that the author has finished world building yet and am curious to see what is coming. I found all the main characters likable so far and the secondary characters interesting. The pace of the novel seemed right and it is well written. The mental health aspect is interesting and I felt for Quinn. Sherrilyn is struggling with whether this world she finds herself in is a delusion or reality. I recommend this novel for readers who enjoy fantasy romance with the why choose trope. (4.5 rounded to 5 stars where needed)
We get the story of Quinn, a girl with magical powers. Quinn’s Dad, & thus her, do not believe magic exists, he views her “power” as a type of psychosis or second personality. Due to her “episodes” they have her undergo a surgical procedure to “fix the problem”, my guess is some sort of lobotomy (it’s not clear). Magic was supposed to be a delusion. Instead, when Quinn wakes, she is in a futuristic dystopian society where fertile women are in short supply so women are owned or contracted out as baby makers, families war for power, and desire is dangerous. Initially disguised as a boy for her protection, Quinn falls into the orbit of three men who make her feel desired and free. She also feels trapped in a delusion created by her psychosis and also feeling trapped in a castle ruled by The Architect, the man who saved her when she arrived, she struggles to learn, not only about the power structures within the castle and world at large, but also about her own magical abilities, regular and “Majekah”. But if none of it is real, neither are consequences so Quinn starts to makes choices she wouldn’t in “real life”, possibly allowing herself to become the person she was always meant to be before society and her Dad made her fit the mold. But with the line between fantasy and reality blurring, Quinn feels she is losing her grip. She has to figure out a way to survive and thrive and maybe just maybe one of her crushes (Ezra, Cayden, & Rowan) will work out. This is a great first book in the series-the world building is done well and with enough detail that the unreliable narrator doesn’t leave you as a reader feeling totally untethered. The relationships between the characters is starting to develop deeper so it set the stage for book two very well-I can’t wait to read it!
And I am talking about as quickly as possible!!!!!! This book was FANTASTIC, and I was talking about it to my family while reading it – it was really that friggin good!
Quinn has always been a little different… things just disintegrate in her hands into their base forms when she touches them. She believes that she has a split personality that is absolutely brilliant and can take things apart and some of the delusions she’s had are spectacular. Finally done with her freakishness, she decides to have brain surgery that will remove that part of her, except something doesn’t seem to be right… the delusions she seems to be having while she should be having the surgery start to feel a little too real.
Her delusion seems to have put her in a dystopian fantasy where the future is now devoid of technology and fire, and everyone seems to have magic!!! Even though she should fit right in, her magic doesn’t work like everyone elses. The Architect who saved her from nearly dying decides that she will stay before having to go into a healing sleep – and his lover, Ezra, lets her stay as long as she pretends to be a male since females in this new world are somewhat rare.
While in this community, she meets several people, Cayden and Rowan to name a few, that she seems to have a thing for… and of course Ezra is also too yummy to be true. They don’t know the extent of her magic or that she isn’t really from there, and she is doing her best to hide it from everyone.
This book has become very addictive, and I cannot wait to read what happens next now that the Architect, Alexander, is now awake!!!! Soooo good!
Reviewed by Dee Layton on behalf of the Plot Thickens Book Club. Title: Delusion And Desires (Tethered by Temptation Book 1) Author: Kate Messick Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I knew this was going to be an absolutely phenomenal book when I read the blurb and it said, " magic was supposed to be a delusion. Instead, it's dragged me into a future where women are owned, families war for power, and desire is dangerous. Disguised as a boy, I fall into the orbit of three men who make me feel terrifyingly alive." My mouth dropped like all the way to the floor dropped. I knew that this was going to take me away and boy did this book take me a way. This is a dystopian romance that literally makes you feel every emotion humanly possible. It grabs you and doesn't let go. Quinn falls into a spiraling world who initially is in some very unsettling predicaments in the beginning. And things as a process to become even more crazy. Quinn then encounters three different men three different personalities in turn which is where the reverse harem comes in. The fact that Quinn is disguised as a boy to me makes everything so much more daring and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The author built the characters amazing she built the world up amazing all the scenes were set just perfect it was just amazing. Overall this was a phenomenal book that keeps you hooked and so drawn in that even when you're done you're like omg really. I am so grateful that this is only book one in this series and I'm going to currently read booktube because I am hooked. This is the first time I've ever read anything by this author and I am flabbergasted.
Delusions and Desires is a darkly enchanting start to Kate Messick’s new Tethered to Temptation series, and while I thoroughly enjoyed it, I also found myself a little lost at times. The post-apocalyptic world woven with magic is an incredible concept, full of mystery and tension, but I couldn’t help but wish for a bit more clarity - especially when it came to Quinn, our leading lady.
We get glimpses into her past through fragmented flashbacks with her father, but by the end, I still felt like I didn’t truly know her. That said, the slow-burn romance between Quinn, Cayden, Rowan, and Ezra is divine - intense, emotional, and filled with chemistry. The addition of some MM moments between Ezra and the Architect was a wonderful touch that added extra depth to the dynamics and a possible glimpse into the future of the relations of them all.
What truly intrigued me was Quinn’s struggle with her mental health and the mention of a lobotomy - an element that made me question everything. The more I read, the more I started to wonder if Quinn’s “issues” weren’t hers at all, but rather a reflection of how those around her fail to understand and accept her.
Despite a few moments of confusion, this book has me hooked. It’s complex, haunting, and beautifully written. I’ll definitely be diving into book two because I need answers - and I can’t wait to see what happens next in this twisted, magical world.
Thank you so much to Kate for allowing me the opportunity to read and review.
Kate Messick's "Delusions and Desires: Tethered by Temptation" is a captivating dystopian novel that impresses with its intense blend of magic, psychological challenges, and complex interpersonal relationships. The story follows Quinn, a young woman caught between reality and delusional hallucinations as she tries to survive in a world steeped in magic, power struggles, and societal oppression. Messick masterfully weaves themes such as mental health, trauma, abuse of power, and sexual violence into a compelling reverse-harem romance that is both emotionally resonant and darkly humorous. Particularly impressive are the multifaceted characters like Quinn, whose inner struggles and development are explored in depth, as well as the complex dynamic between her and the male characters who both protect and challenge her. The world, where technology has been replaced by magic and women are oppressed, is strikingly dystopian and richly detailed. The author does not shy away from addressing sensitive topics such as dubious consent and emotional abuse, which gives the book an intense, sometimes oppressive atmosphere and can only be recommended for mature readers. Overall, "Tethered by Temptation" is a profound and emotional novel that prompts reflection and captivates with its unique blend of fantasy, romance, and psychological suspense. The narrative style is powerful and engaging, the plot complex and full of unexpected twists that enthrall readers and hold them spellbound. An impressive start to a series that leaves you eager for the sequels.
This book was a wild, mind-bending ride — the kind where you genuinely can’t tell what’s real and what’s imagined, and you love every confusing second of it.
We follow Quinn, who believes she’s in the middle of brain surgery… then suddenly wakes up in a post-apocalyptic, magic-filled Scotland where women are rare and dangerously valuable. From the very first scene, the tension and unreality keep you flipping pages, desperate for answers.
Quinn is quirky, stubborn, and easy to root for — even if she does avoid some very obvious questions. And the reverse harem dynamic? So much fun. Rowan, Cayden, and Quinn (yes, another Quinn!) each bring something different to the table, from the dangerously intense to the heartbreakingly soft. The chemistry is sizzling and full of suspense — a slow burn with major payoff.
The worldbuilding is chaotic in the best way — dystopian tech, magic, secrets, and that constant nagging thought of Is this actually happening? I especially loved the side characters and can’t wait to learn more about them in future books.
If you enjoy: ✨ Reverse harem romantasy ✨ Post-apocalyptic worlds ✨ Underlying mystery + unreliable reality ✨ Spice, danger, and dark secrets ✨ Strong but vulnerable FMCs
…add this one to your TBR immediately.
The ending leaves you desperate for the next book — because honestly? I need answers now.
Addictive, tense, spicy, and full of twists — a fantastic first installment and an author I’m excited to keep reading!
This book is something special. And the main reason for that is that I have never felt this confused while reading. It might seem strange to mention this as a strength, but it’s because the author managed to transfer the confusion of our fmc onto her readers. Whatever she doesn’t understand, we as readers don’t understand and it leads to a very peculiar feeling while reading. I even went back to check the blurb to give me a bit of direction. And while I wasn’t sure about the feeling at first, I have to say I really love it at this point! The way it helped me connect with Quinn is truly amazing and I can’t wait to find out what will be next.
I have a soft spot for dystopian storylines, and this author managed to give it an interesting and original spin. And let’s be real: finding something original to read isn’t as easy as it used to be, so this was a very pleasant surprise. I also like Quinn’s character. She hasn’t had an easy life, and still manages to radiate a “Joie de vivre” I truly admire. I have mixed feelings about the men, but I’m at a point I just want to trust Quinn’s gut feeling about them. And I’m kinda hoping the four we’ve seen so far will have to deal with some other future suitors as well.
I was very happy to find out the time in between books will be limited for this series, because I already can’t wait to find out what’s next for Quinn! Ill be counting the days and weeks until we get to book two.
The magic inside me was an outdated operating system on a computer. It worked, but none of the programs for Windows Dystopian Future ™ were compatible.
I've had this author on my TBR list for some time, but like most books/authors on my TBR, it just disappeared in the chaos a bit. So when I got the offer for an ARC for this first book in the series, I immediately said yes.
The start was confusing, I'm not very used to starting from the viewpoint of one of the MMCs. Plus from the blurb I expected to start with either the FMC's surgery or start a bit before her surgery. But once I figured out that Alexander was not our FMC but instead one of the MMC (maybe) it all got much clearer. I actually found it very nice to immediately jump into the story.
The story starts with our FMC, Quinn, quite literally falling into what she assumes is a imaginary world made up by her second personality, Miss Q. She wakes up in the castle of the Architect. They assume that she's 'auditioning' to join the family so they let her join in on all the tests. Quinn goes along since she still thinks this is all just a dream and everything could suddenly change again.
This book is filled with flashbacks. I still don't like them but here I think it was good since we got to jump right in (I'm not very patient). However, I found the flashbacks later in the book unnecessary. We could've just followed those in 'real-time'.
This book seems to tick all the boxes. Dystopian RH, quirky and a bit unstable FMC, supporting and diverse MMCs, a small bad, a mysterious big bad, and plenty of drama, risks, and thrills. Quinn is lovable, and a bit traumatized. And by a bit, I mean very. We get sneak peeks at the things she went through growing up, while she’s living what she thinks is a made up reality. A father who loved her too much but didn’t know how to help. A school full of bullies who will mock her at any given chance. Along with snippets of other “fictional universes” she believes her brain made up. Hinting at enough trauma from each one to last a lifetime. This most recent universe has her trying something new. The previous ones all ended terribly, so she’s decided to embrace this one and do/react how she WANTS instead of what she thinks is the safe bet. She’s not sure how much time she has in this universe so she’s determined to make the best of it. she also has 3 men who are determined to keep her safe in this new Land of magic and mystery. And one stalker who is proving to be quite the problem. She also has made herself some besties, who are completely different personalities, and both bring something wonderful to their friendship. They’re protective and supportive, while letting her discover this place and its wonders of magic and possibility. I am genuinely so excited for the next book, and can’t wait to see what happens next. I have so many unanswered questions.
Delusions and Desires: Tethered By Temptation Book 1 by Kate Messick is an amazing slow burn romantasy. Quinn has spent a life with everyone thinking she's crazy when she claims to use magic. She comes out of blackouts to things being taken apart by her alter personality. When she awakens in a dystopian future powered by magic that everyone has, she decides to enjoy the ride. What happens when she doesn't wake up and begins to believe it might not be a dream? OMG this one was so good. Loved the edge and question of, is she crazy or does she have magic? The world-building was amazing and I enjoyed discovering this whole new world along with Quinn. Has a really realistic feel of “what if” to it that made it super relatable and really easy to get into the story. Quinn seems to naturally attract men. Despite nothing really getting spicy yet…the potential is definitely there. Probably a level 2 on the spice scale. This is a phenomenal why-choose romantic fantasy with themes of hidden identity, time travel, magic, forced proximity, found family, dystopian society, mental health issues, and past trauma. It ends with some things being resolved but also a mini cliffhanger that leaves you wanting more but like not totally left hanging, much appreciated. I definitely recommend checking this book out as it's an amazing read filled with interesting twists and plenty of humor.
