Bonds require give and take, but he won’t give and she won’t take.

After five failed bonding attempts, Mellia will never undergo the binding ritual again. But, with her father’s abdication approaching and Mellia his only surviving heir, he’s picked out another suitor for her. Mellia will do anything to avoid the torturous ritual, even dedicate herself to the Golden God who killed her brother.

Alroth needs to protect his band of outcasts, but he only brings more danger down on them. If he could bind a mage and wield her magic, he could keep them safe. But where could he find a mage desperate enough to bind herself to a mercenary dogged by accusations of treason?

A bond between Mellia and Alroth could solve all their problems—or cause a host of new ones. Heresy accusations, attacks from the lord’s personal guard, and being tossed in an oubliette pale in comparison to the feat of learning to trust each other and wield their magical bond as a team.

Unless they learn to harness their combined power, they’ll never escape the forces bent on their destruction…

A Bond of Storms and Stitches is a historical fantasy romance Seven Brides for Seven Brothers riff perfect for fans of Paladin's Grace and Grace Draven.

Did Not Finish

Too much like real life (minus the magic) and I’m reading for escapism. I might be able to go back to it later. It’s really well written but not what I’m able to read at this time.

Book Review of A Bond of Storms and Stitches By Elizabeth F. Shearly
I need to state before getting into this review that I was given this book through Booksprout. Now that has been stated, I can now get into the book review. There are going to be spoilers in this review. This is an ARC copy.

A Bond of Storms and Stitches ended up being one of those reads where I felt completely pulled in by the characters and emotional weight, even more than the action itself.
I really connected with Mellia right away. Knowing she had already gone through multiple failed and painful binding rituals made her desperation feel very real to me, and I found myself fully understanding why she would go to such extreme lengths to escape that fate. Her choice to devote herself to the Golden God, despite the personal loss tied to that deity, added this layer of grief and inner conflict that I thought was handled really well. It made her journey feel less like a typical fantasy arc and more like something deeply personal.
Alroth worked so well for me as a counterpart to her. I liked that he wasn’t just protective in an overbearing way. His steadiness and sense of responsibility grounded a lot of the chaos around them. Their bond, even though it started accidentally, felt meaningful as it developed. I liked watching them learn how to trust each other while everything around them kept raising the stakes.
The world-building was another part I really appreciated. I felt like I could clearly picture the setting, especially with the influence of North American and Ice Age elements. It gave everything a distinct feel that stood out from other fantasy worlds I’ve read. The magic system and political intrigue were layered enough that I had to pay attention, but in a way that made me more invested rather than overwhelmed.
Emotionally, this book hit pretty hard for me at times. The themes around trust, sacrifice, and the cost of power weren’t just background elements. They really shaped how the characters made decisions. I will say there were a few moments where I felt like character reactions didn’t fully line up or shifted a little too quickly, and some of the action scenes felt more told than shown. I found myself wishing those moments had been given a bit more space to breathe.
Even with that, I genuinely enjoyed this book. It feels like a strong start to the Syphon Bound series, and I’m especially interested in seeing where some of the side characters go because they have a lot of potential.
If you like romantasy that leans into emotional depth, complicated relationships, and morally grey characters, I definitely think this one is worth trying.
Now for the star ratings I’m giving this book.
I’m giving this book an overall rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
The story is getting a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.
The writing style is getting a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
The spicy level is getting a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
The spicy rating would be a 4 according to romance.io stem rating guide. I’m taking a guess on what the rating would be as this book is not out yet.

This book had immense potential that unfortunately tripped over its own execution. Some of the positives are, the magic system to be conceptually brilliant the visceral nature of the binding was unique and held my interest throughout. While the magic was a highlight, the technical explanations often became so convoluted that they hindered the story's flow.
Another favorite was the Mythology though it did leave me wishing the fascinating mythos and the history of the Golden God had been more thoroughly fleshed out.

Not so favorite things were , Mellia, who frequently suffers from a frustrating case of too stupid to live, making choices that felt more like plot contrivances than organic character growth. It is a solid foundation for the Syphon Bound series, but the clunky mechanics and character logic made it a difficult journey to finish.

The relationship of FMC and MMC lacked the necessary spark to make the 'E2L trope convincing. While there were clear attempts at yearning, the connection felt more like a byproduct of the magical bond rather than a genuine evolution of feelings. Without that organic chemistry, the stakes of their relationship didn't feel real enough to stay invested in.

There also seemed to be hints of future relationships but again, everything just seemed really convoluted and not fleshed out enough, at least for me.

A Bond of Storms and Stitches is a richly layered fantasy that leans heavily into character, magic, and emotional consequence rather than nonstop action, and it does so beautifully.

At the heart of the story are Mellia and Alroth, whose bond anchors the narrative as political intrigue and powerful magic swirl around them. Mellia’s journey of self-discovery is compelling and thoughtfully written, while Alroth’s protective nature adds both tension and emotional grounding. Their dynamic feels earned, evolving naturally as they’re tested by loyalty, sacrifice, and the weight of their choices.

One of this book’s greatest strengths is its world-building. Shearly crafts a vivid setting inspired by North American and Ice Age flora and fauna, creating a landscape that feels both unique and immersive. The magic system and political structures are intricate and well thought out, rewarding readers who enjoy paying close attention to the details.

Emotionally, the story carries real weight. Themes of trust, sacrifice, and the cost of power are woven throughout, giving the narrative depth beyond the surface-level fantasy elements. This is a book that wants you to feel as much as you read.

The book follows Mellia, the sole heir to her father’s throne, who has endured five agonizing and failed attempts at a magical "binding ritual". To escape another forced suitor and a torturous ritual, she seeks refuge by dedicating herself to the Golden God—the same deity responsible for her brother's death.
The plot centers on an accidental magical bond between Mellia and a retired warrior named Alroth, who is burdened by his own heavy responsibilities. Together, they must:
• Master Magic: Hone their combined skills to navigate a world where others want to exploit Mellia for her land and title.
• Uncover a Conspiracy: Save the mages from a murder plot orchestrated by people they once trusted.
• Magical Companions: The story even features the spawning of a "magical puppy".
Based on early reviews and author insights, the book is noted for its strong world-building and high emotional stakes.
• Genre & Vibe: It is described as a "3-chili" spice level romantasy that blends elements of historical fantasy, marriage of convenience, and kidnapping-as-romance tropes.
• Themes: The narrative explores deeper themes of protective female instincts and finding the courage to fight for oneself when pushed to the limit.
• Reviewer Sentiment: Early readers on Goodreads have praised it for its intense pacing and "morally grey" characters typical of Shearly's style. It currently holds a strong 4.0 rating from early review copies.

A Bond of Storms and Stitches has established deep roots in world building as the foundation for the Syphon Bound series. Heavy emotional depth, giving weight to the connection between Alroth and Mellia for most of story—I felt there are areas that blur, where characters act outside established personality and/or boomerang feelings irrationally. The supporting characters have potential to be great protagonists in future books. Action was referenced more often than seen—when opportunity presented itself for action to be seen, scene felt rushed and skimmed over. Lots of potential in this series. I really enjoyed it overall. *** Recommended ***

A Bond of Storms and Stitches is a darkly enchanting start to the Syphon Bound series, steeped in tension, power, and quiet emotional ache. Elizabeth F. Shearly weaves a world where magic feels sharp and costly, and bonds are forged through survival as much as choice.

The atmosphere is thick with storm energy—both literal and emotional. The magic system is intriguing and visceral, and I loved how the act of binding carries weight, consequence, and intimacy. The characters feel raw and guarded, shaped by what they’ve endured, and the relationships develop with a slow, aching pull rather than instant trust.

The pacing is deliberate, allowing the world and emotions to unfold naturally, though there were moments where I wished certain scenes had lingered longer. Even so, the tension never fully releases, leaving you with that delicious sense of unease that makes a first book in a series so compelling.

Oof its a doozy of a read. Full of political intrigue, cost of power, and the weight of our choices. I feel emotionally strung out after reading this. It was an intense read with some beautiful moments between Mellia and Aleroth. I love their relationship but them as separate characters is the true show stopper of this story. Melia has a beautiful journey of figuring out who she is and what she wants. She is beautifully written and I found myself completely in love with her experiences. Sometimes she did things that drove me crazy but it made me love her more in the end. She's flawed but amazing still. Aleroth is just as a well written too. He's protective and very intense. Their dynamic was a whirlwind but not instant. There was a connection but it took time to really develop and change. While I love the characters and their dynamics, I also adore the magic and political system. It hurt in some areas and evoked serious emotions. I think this is one of my favorite reads of the month.

I read this book and it was so interesting and engaging for me the whole time. I enjoyed the characters. It felt like I was reading a book that was intriguing. I didn’t want to put the book down when I was reading it. I loved Mellia and Alroth. I felt for Mellia because it was relatable not the arranged or rushed but because she was relatable to me. For me, I experienced failed surgeries that lead me to be medically disabled. I just felt defeated and got to a point where I felt like I was bound to always have complications when I had a major surgery. But then my surgery in 2021, it was the surgery the was the easiest and had no complications. That is how I saw Mellia when she looked at the relationships/failed bonding happened.

I love a unique magic system, and A Bond of Storm and Stitches does not disappoint. I really enjoyed the romance and tension in this book; it wasn’t overdone or overly angsty, and it felt earned and real. While this was a quick read for me, it was by no means fast-paced. The story allows for slower, more meaningful scenes and prioritises the characters’ emotions over constant action, which I appreciated. If you’re after a more emotional fantasy read with a grounded romance, this could be for you. Keep in mind there are some darker themes present, so it’s always worth checking the content warnings if that’s something you want to avoid.

A Bond of Storms and Stitches is a beautifully layered fantasy that balances immersive world‑building with heartfelt character development. Mellia and Alroth’s bond grows with emotional depth and natural tension, grounding the story as political intrigue and powerful magic swirl around them. The setting feels vivid and unique, and the magic system is both intricate and engaging.
This book delivers real emotional weight , trust, sacrifice, and the cost of power and it all comes together in a way that feels meaningful and compelling. A strong, immersive start to the series that left me eager for more.
