I swore I’d never risk my heart again—until the day a grumpy, wounded soldier crashed into my world and made me break that promise with a single look.
I came to these mountains to escape. To bury the war zones I once survived, the patients I couldn’t save, and the part of me that still longs for something I’ll never have. Solitude was supposed to keep me safe.
Then Reid McAllister appeared in my clinic—armed, bleeding, and carrying secrets that could destroy us both. He won’t tell me the truth, but danger follows him like a shadow. And now it’s found me, too.
Stranded together in the Sangre de Cristo mountains, power cut and communication out, I can’t decide which is more the enemies closing in—or the way Reid looks at me like I’m the only thing worth saving.
Because the deeper we dig into his mission, the more I see the man behind the secrets. The protector. The hidden past. The one I can’t resist.
I made vows to protect myself. He made vows that still haunt him.
Review: Last Vow by Dannie Wilkes absolutely consumed me. I picked it up thinking I’d read a few chapters, and before I knew it, I was at the end with my heart still racing. The characters were perfect, and the raw emotion from each of them dug right into my soul.
The entire book had me on edge, fully invested and cheering for both Reid and Lila to accomplish their mission. The balance between tactical action and romance was heavenly—it never felt forced, and both sides fed into each other beautifully.
If I had one small critique, it would be how Reid and Cole’s injuries sometimes seemed to vanish during the high-intensity moments. For example, Reid going from a collapsed lung and a gunshot wound to running like a trained machine felt a little disconnected. Still, it didn’t pull me too far out of the story because the writing was that gripping.
Overall, this was an easy 5/5 for me. I loved every second of it and cannot wait to see what this author brings us next!
Previous reviews find this book exciting & hard to put down. Maybe even a sweet romance. But be aware that is primarily a story of survival in a military type espionage situation. It is very intense! It is two people depending upon one another for survival but, to me, there are not many actual romantic scenes. Those that are are intense for sure and we’re shown more interest from his point of view. The end of their story is definitely worth waiting for.
I was hooked from the first line. The heroine’s quiet strength and haunted past, combined with Reid’s wounded-soldier mystery, make this an emotional page-turner. The mountain setting adds a gorgeous, claustrophobic tension that makes the love story burn even hotter.
