One of Maggie Lee’s biggest fears is getting thrown into the nut house. With a mentally unstable mother and her own ability to talk to animals (not to mention that she’s killed people) it’s not a stretch to believe it could happen.
When she’s asked to go undercover as a patient at the same facility where her mother resides, it’s like Maggie’s worst nightmare is coming true. If she didn’t feel like she owed the person she’s trying to help, she’d never agree to be committed, but Maggie believes in repaying her debts.
Even if it means the job makes her certifiably insane.
I honestly believe this was the best Hitwoman yet! The animals really pulled through for Maggie, her family, and her adopted family. I actually have 14 highlighted areas in this one which is more than any of the 2,000-something books on GoodReads I’ve read! Obviously there were a lot of things I have comments on. If you’ve read my previous reviews you’ll know I’m about to put some of those highlights below…
This opens with Maggie visiting her sister Theresa’s grave. Theresa was Katie’s mom. Katie is the whole reason Maggie is now a hitwoman, but if you’ve got questions as to why, I guess you’ll have to start at book one! You really should because then you’ll understand the relationships Maggie has with her loud and wild family and also her menagerie of animals of every species.
God answers a question that Maggie was rhetorically asking her late sister’s grave. Maggie tells God to stay out of her conversation. God says…
“‘It’s one-sided,’ he pointed out. ‘Therefore, I don’t think you can actually call it a conversation. Maybe it’s a monologue. Some might even say a soliloquy of grief.’”
“A soliloquy of grief.” I like that. God is wise. And I don’t mean that God either. Well not in this book anyway. Start with book one so you know who God is!
The next excerpt is while Maggie is still over Theresa’s grave. She is talking to God about how she still grieves over her sister’s death, but she grieves alone. Her trusty companion says…
“‘You could’ve tried talking to one of your aunts about Theresa,’ [God] prodded. ‘I can’t deal with anybody else’s grief,’ I admitted on a tired sigh. ‘I’m so exhausted all the time. If I brought it up to one of them, and they got upset, I’d have to make it better. I’m so tired of having to make everything better for everybody.’ ‘And there you have it,’ God said quietly. ‘It’s all caught up to you.’”
Maggie angers me way more than she should considering she’s a book character, but when she constantly allows her family to take advantage of her it reminds me of the way I used to be when I did the same. I want Maggie to be stronger and think better of herself and take care of herself instead of always putting everyone else ahead of her own needs. Her own mental health! Everybody, and I mean everybody in her very large circle expects her to take care of everything for them. And the reason they do is because Maggie allows it. People can’t take advantage of you unless you let them.
And here’s the first case of Maggie’s animal friends head out to save the day! It made me laugh reading that Piss was in Maggie’s lap and God was in her bra. 😂 If you didn’t know who each named thing was, you’d be scratching your head!
“Piss sat on my lap while DeeDee, Billy and Rowdy took up the rest of the back seat. God was in my bra, and Benny was curled up in the palm of my hand.”
Pure gold!
Maggie has a mantra that is brought up in every book…
“These guys were taking on more than they knew when they decided to come for me. I’d go down swinging. Eyes. Nose. Throat. Groin.” Eyes. Nose. Throat. Groin. Hit ‘em where it counts!
Maggie may be small, but she is mighty and a force to be reckoned with!
I’ll mention something small that I do in all the books and that is that I always use a proper Southern woman’s voice when Piss says her lines. Except her name, Piss is a true lady.
Armani and her Scrabble tiles. I always try to figure out what they spell. This time I got it quickly! Sometimes I don’t because it isn’t always just one word the 7 letters spell out. Sometimes it’s initials and a last name or it’s 2 words.
And then there’s a major problem Maggie has above a lot of her other troubles and that is her sister, Marlene…
“I shook my head. ‘When the bullets started flying, [Marlene] looked out for herself. She abandoned Alicia. Again.’ Armani winced but knew enough to not argue. ‘You’ve got to find some peace, chica.’ With that, she got up and limped out of the room.”
Alicia is Marlene’s daughter. She left Alicia behind in the past. She did leave her with her family, but she didn’t tell anyone. She just took off and left a note that she’d be back, but then Billy ate the note so no one knew where Marlene was or if she’d return. Prior to this she’d left Alicia for quite awhile while she figured out her life. She was gone for months without a peep. Marlene is a selfish mother. That precious excerpt was about how she hid up in a tree while literal bullets were being shot at here and the family, which included Alicia. Maggie threw herself in front of everyone and screamed at the shooter to shoot her instead which the person did.
Armani was right, Maggie does need to find some semblance of peace. Apparently not at the cemetery though because that’s where she was nearly killed. Maybe the next book (it’s available now!) Maggie will have some peace. Actually, I’m headed to that book after I’m finished here. The book is the Soccer Mom one.
So there you have it. There’s the comments from the peanut gallery. 😆
See you in my next review/blog. Deuces to your cabooses! 🌟⭐️🌟⭐️🌟💕
This was the worst book in the series. Not only because of the complete lack of editing but the plot and characters too. There was absolutely no reason for Nat suffering that Maggie fake being a mental patient. Nat could’ve done it himself, no problem. He doesn’t have a family to explain his actions to, nor does he know all the staff at the facility. Why would he even make a suggestion like this knowing Maggie’s mom is there and knowing how her family would react?
This is so out of character for the Nat we’ve known for many, many books.
I hate to say it but I think JB Lynn needs to end this series because it’s lost its spark and it feels like she doesn’t actually care about it anymore. Maggie keeps doing the same stupid stuff, her family keeps being annoying and/or awful. Maggie refuses to acknowledge that she’s not actually a good person and after 50+ books, there’s been zero character growth. She’s angry, rude, paranoid, hypocritical, prone to unnecessary panic, self-sacrificing in the worst ways, filled with grief and guilt, and shoulders everyone’s problems, no matter that she’s been at breaking point for pretty much this entire book series.
These books are a lot of fun and they typically get 5 stars from me. I really enjoy this author. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. However, the amount of grammatical errors was very distracting. This is not typical of these books. I wondered if there was a new editor or it just got published without review. No spaces at the end of sentences, missing words or using past tense in present tense sentences. Quotation marks, or lack thereof, made me nuts. I was wishing I had the manuscript so I could edit as I go. The storyline was fun! I've already pre-purchased the next book in the series and am hopeful these issues will not be in that book.
Maggie Lee may be a hitwoman but she's not random killer. She is a tough, and a loyal protector of her family and pets. She will however take a bullet to keep the rest of her people safe! Another wonderful episode in Maggie's crazy life. Family, friends, animals have issues as well as new characters. Somehow Maggie Lee has everything under control. I love the menagerie and their personalities and to know them better! They each are loyal and together a lot to this story! I love this is series and Maggie's can do attitude!
I don't know why. I have every single one of these books and this is the first time I actually skipped through pages. The animals are great as usual but the story basis of a missing person seemed to drag out. I also don't understand why they all put up with psycho Susan. Nosy busybody control freak. She ought to be in the mental hospital with Mary. Partly why I didn't like this book. Still buying the next one though...
Maggie is teaming up with Nat to find Emery. He's the escaped mental patient that saved her from the burning car in the last book. Nothing is as it seems with the missing patient and Armani's tiles are right on. It's an emotional story since it's Theresa's birthday and feelings are running high. Not too much going on in this book. Patrick helped a few times and Delvaccio made an appearance. Looking forward to the next book
I love this series and always look forward to the next one, but the ocd part of me wishes that more effort was put into editing. The wrongly placed quotes and mixed up words (not spoken by dogs) are distracting to me. Keep the stories coming and check the editing.
The story was good, funny and a quick read. There are a lot of spelling errors, missing spaced, and lack of capital letters. If you can get past those then you might like the book. There seems to be parts missing from the plot. Like chapters got edited. Her early books are better.
Maggie and her furry sidekicks are back—and this time they’re chasing down an escaped mental patient! If she didn’t have stress before, she sure does now. Another fast-paced, laugh-out-loud adventure in Maggie’s wonderfully chaotic life. Keep them coming, because I’m not ready to say goodbye to this crew!
The story has so many twists and turns I couldn't get who did what. I didn't even suspect who dun it! Artfully written, the author takes with Maggie oon another adventure.
For the author: please have this proofread as i found numerous spelling and grammatical errors which I highlighted. It makes it seem as though the writing was rushed. I have read all the books in this series and have enjoyed them.
I love these books, but there are so many grammatical mistakes it made this one hard to read. It was distracting, and took some pleasure from reading the book. It won't keep me from buying the next one though.
This is seriously one of my favorite series. Jen manages to keep it fresh and entertaining even though there’s 3 to 4 books that come out a year. I’m so glad I don’t have to wait longer than a couple of months for the next installment. The characters are heartwarming, relatable and make me laugh.
Another good Maggie and her menagerie read. I love all of these books. One thing I'd like to say to JB, please edit better. There are missed words, quotation marks missed or backwards. Very annoying to a former tech writer.
I’m torn. This seemed rushed with so much going with the characters. I just felt like there could have been more written within the hospital. The ending could have been drawn out more. I don’t know how to explain everything and I guess that is the problem.
Thought the typos and poor punctuation were a distraction. I’ve read every book in the 51 book series but this is the only one that needed a good proofreader. Thankfully the story was worth the read.
This book was very good and exciting and full of excitement. I would like to see Maggie mother get better, if Maggie can talk to animals then Emery can make her mother better.
Another adventure with Maggie and her crew. I absolutely love the characters in this series. They are a most unique group. I do look forward to the next release.
This is another fun romp in Maggie's life. I this novel, she's searching for a mental patient to find a missing boy. In it, she has to infiltrate the mental hospital, but her biggest fear is, what if they decide to keep her? This book is filled with the craziness and hijinks you would expect in Maggie's life. Its humorous, yet has poignant moments. Fans of the genre will love this book. The author is on my must read authors' list.
