Out of all the side archs in the Overlord series, this is the one I was looking to second least. (the first being Overlord, Vol. 4 (light novel): The Lizardman Heroes)

Though needed to help explain what happened at the end of the first book, once again we are viewing another faction's interactions in relation to the appearance of Ainz Ooal Gown. We get to see what the summoned goblins are up to, and what the alchemist and his grandmother are up to as well.

One thing this story does well is the indirect way Ainz helps the small village using his experiences with two of the other lords of the forest. I did think that was quite interesting, and the author's way of presenting the human story first, then the story from Ainz's was well done and kept things interesting. There was, of course, the usual smattering of 'humans are viewed like trash' thrown in. Ainz shows how much he has changed since coming to the world by being more and more uncaring about humans and their kind.

To me though, this book was just average. I still enjoyed it, but nothing really surprised me in it and other than seeing some interactions among the 'normal' maids and learning a bit about Lupusregina Beta. (and how she considers even her human friends as just interesting toys) I am hoping the next book steps things up and progresses the story more than this one did.

At this point, you've read this much of the series, and I am sure you will continue to read it, much like I will.

I wasn't a big fan of volume 8 of the Overlord Light Novel series. It felt as if it didn't belong in the sequencial order of the series. Volume 8 had vague references to the previous volume, yet nothing in regards to where it left off. I was disappointed that this felt, for more or less, like a side novel.

These were just two side stories. They still had some important plot, though. They weren't as interesting as I hoped they would be, but they weren't bad at all.

Read this review (and others) at: https://literatureislife.com/2018/10/...

The Two Leaders was…well, a little disappointing. This book focuses primarily on character development, with a little world-building and no real plot development. The novel actually contains two separate (although connected) stories: one focusing on Enri and the second on Ainz. In a nutshell, each story shows what day-to-day life is like for both of them as leaders of their communities. Both stories seem to take place around Volumes 5 and 6, as it is mentioned Sebas is still in Re-Estize. While having a different spin on Overlord is nice, The Two Leaders lacked the flair of the previous volumes.

Looking solely at character development, The Two Leaders was great. Enri’s story displayed how life is for normal, everyday people in this fantasy universe. It also shows how far Carne Village has progressed after being attacked way back in Volume 1. Readers are starting to see humans and non-humans living together peacefully, something that will be required in the future if Ainz is to successfully take over the world without using an iron fist. The resolve of the villagers is made apparent, as they refuse to be defenseless victims again. Enri dealing with many of the same personal issues, as a leader, as Ainz makes for a great comparison.

Ainz’s story shows something touched on in previous volumes: his transition from a normal man to an overlord. As a former Japanese salaryman, he uses what business skills he has to run Nazarick. Many other administrative functions are left to Albedo and Demiurge, since that is literally what they were made for. Ainz’s acting skills are also shown to have improved as he prepares himself for more public appearances as a leader. While seeing big fights is always neat, seeing the day-to-day activities that are normally passed over was interesting too.

Had it been placed between other volumes chronologically, The Two Leaders may have worked better. Having it so close to the also slow Volume 4 may have been problematic but being hypothetical that is really neither here nor there. The biggest gripe with The Two Leaders is that it interrupts an ongoing storyline. Volume 7 ended on a fairly sizeable cliffhanger that is clearly leading to something big. And then this side story just gets dropped in immediately following that, which is frustrating. Frustrating enough, in fact, to knock a star off the rating. But at least Volume 9 will, hopefully, impress well enough to make up for the interruption.

I felt volume 8 was dotting the "i-es" and crossing the "t-ees". Probably for the anime tv series. There is really no point to having an improvement in the health potions for Nazarik (because their soldiers are mostly Undeads and Ainz is also an undead). Pouring an advanced health potion on an undead actually harms them. If the potions are to be sold or used to gain influence amongst the human kingdoms, then it is "healing" them from the "conquering of this "new world". In other words I fell it would be a contradiction. If your intention and main arc plot is to conquer this new world, selling healing potions only makes your human enemies stronger.
The other research and developments are okay. To find out which crops, which scroll ingredients, etc. are good substitutes to use for consumption in Nazarik and its projects.
I think this volume 8 could have been deleted and it would not change the main plot arcs or secondary arcs.
Author has a predisposition for contradictions. Wants main character to conquer this new world, but stresses lack of talent and capacity of its main character (Ainz, Momonga, Suzuki) (a japanese man that worked in sales and has no above average intelligence, talents, capacities, etc.) Wants to design new healing potions, that could harm his world conquest, wants to have allies, but prefers to kill the workers, lizard men, etc.
Wants to find his friends of the guild in this new world, wants to find other players of yggrasyl game, that was closed down in the beginning of the story, in this new world, but does not post quests, nor notices on the adventure boards, etc.

To prawda!

Was not a fan of this one.

Maruyama takes a different approached with this volume by telling the story of villagers in part one and the story of what's happening to Nazarick in part 2. Though this made for interesting reveals, I felt part 1 lacked in content. A lot of the dialogue and action that happened meant nothing and ended up being idle banter.

Overall, the saving grace of the volume is the false stakes that are presented in part 1 due to the flip flopping of the story. Many key events happens without the security the books usually provide and you are left with the false assumption that things are going on unnoticed. After illuminating the gag in part 2, you are left with a "why did this even happen then" feeling. Maruyama also cleans up his repetitive phrasing in this one, so that's a plus.

Not much to write about this one, it's unskippable because there are strands of development but I'd say if you had to skip it, go ahead. It was a pain to get through and the weakest of the series.

Summary
Basically this book is about a guy who gets transfered into a frictional world or a game where he is overpowered and has ~42 overpowered followers who thinks he (Momanga or something like that later he becomes Ainz) is the greatest and the best. One of my best Frictional novels I have ever read.
It joins togather comedy with the seriousness and also answers about the reality of socitey. It's fun when his followers overpraise him about something he dosen't Know.
For example one of his Smartest follower Demurgus thinks Momanga is smarter than him their conversetion goes like.

Momanga: So everything is fine right?
Demurgus: Oh how smart of you My lordyou found something was wrong So fast? You are talking about that right?
Momanga: Yes that?
Demurgus: That is amazing?
Momanga: Oh, Can you solve That?
Demurgus: Of course that is not a probelm.
Momanga (on his heart): "But i dont know what that is?"

This is my least favorite "Overlord" volume so far by a lot.

I don't like using this term too much because the internet has completely deprived it of most of its original meaning, but I'm going to use it anyway: this volume feels like filler. It focuses entirely on side characters that are, for the most part, very uninteresting. The first half was an absolute slog to read, to the point that I ended up just mindlessly flipping through the pages until the part was suddenly over and I realized I hadn't actually remembered any of it. The second part is a little bit better, there are at least a few scenes I enjoyed. But it still felt like a book that I could have entirely skipped over and missed nothing.

The "Overlord" light novels can be a bit hit or miss for me, but this one was definitely a massive miss. I hope the next one greatly makes up for it.

Another in the series. And another ive read a (worse) different translation for.

The official translation sadly is still not particularly good and its obvious that this wasnt written in English first, and the problems in translation are even more obvious now that i can directly compare it to the first Witcher book.

Past that this is a particularly boring bit of the story, its a filler arc building up the world and the background for the next one putting it very low on my list overall. I still like this world overall. The main character being a reluctant evil overlord is a trope I enjoy and there is at least one more really good arc looking forward that I would like to see the official translation of.

The first 150 pages cover a story about the village of Carne, where Enri has used her private army to build a better town and where Nfiria now lives. It's a cool Overlord style story and I liked it a lot. The last 100 pages are a bit of slice of life in Nazarick... with a lot of light novel tropes and just uninteresting. Really struggled with that last part.

Come to think of it, there is a reason why the last 100 pages were adapted as a single episode, whereas the first 150 pages resulted in 4 episodes.

This was a side story volume, and I eagerly await the return to the main plot in the next book!

This one is a calm and almost lovely book about the daily life in Carne Village and in Nazarick, the first part is centred in Enri, her Goblins and her relationship with Nfirea and the second part is a very productive day in the life of Momonga, his multiple duties, his corporate policies and the frustration of Albedo. A great book and even if it a transition book it is important for what its about to come.

Writing style: ★★★★☆ 4.5/5 stars
Overall plot: ★★★★★ 5/5 stars

Biggest con:
- The frequent reminders in the first half of the book how Ainz made X expression, but actually didn’t because he’s not human anymore. Felt like a bit too much imo

Biggest pro:
- several scenes in this book aren’t in the anime! It was exciting to come across these more obvious differences! :)

This book is a solid continuation of the series! I’ve been saying this to anyone who would listen, but the father along I get in this series the more it has a different vibe from the anime, despite being the same story at its core. It’s terribly exciting to see this vibe difference grow more with each book - there were even scenes I don’t remember seeing in the anime here! I’m far more invested in the light novel series then I ever was in the anime, and I consider the anime to be one of my top favorites.

At this point, the story is beginning to be a little draggy. It is as if these volumes were written to increase the volume number but doesn’t build the story much. I’ve been wanting to read the progression of Ains with his domination and expansion, whether there will be other players or world items and generally progressing the story but the past few volumes feel like fillers.

I can only cross my fingers and hope the coming volumes finally progresses the story.

Less intense compared to the previous ones, but the story is still going strong, unlike a lot of the books I read this one isn't amazingly written (I mean language and prose wise, the story is supine), may be because it is translated from the original Japanese but its language is fairly simple, leaving much to be wanted, but the characters development and the overall story is still so worth it.

At first, I was a bit annoyed about how every overlord volume since the first three just felt like a collection of side stories. But I have come to realize that that’s actually what makes the series great. It’s not just good world-building but also an interesting way to tell the story of Ainz Ooal Gown from multiple perspectives.

Phew. This took me a while to finish (at least it felt that way). I did enjoy following the side stories and getting more lore about the world. However, this book is just 2 side stories/slice of life style writing. It was interesting to learn more but it definitely dragged on more than other books in the series. I’m going to take a short break from the series and then head right into book 9. :)

Not bad, but didn’t really blow my socks off either. It was interesting to see a relatively normal day in Nazarick and how it quietly tied into the world of the more ordinary human characters, especially in the town of Carne.

Fantastic book. Fantastic series. You have to really pay attention to where you are in the timeline of the story though.

I have never expected to read a filler story in a light novel, but here I am.
