Most people picture archaeologists digging through dirt in search of ancient artifacts and lost cities. And sometimes that’s exactly right—as at the mound of Troy, where excavations suggest there may be truth behind Homer’s tales. But archaeology is much more than excavation. It blends science, history, and detective work, using tools like CT scans, astronomical modeling, and even cryptographic analysis to solve puzzles from across the ages.
In Great Archaeological Mysteries of Europe and the Mediterranean, you’ll join acclaimed anthropologist and archaeologist Dr. Karen Bellinger for 18 fascinating lectures that illuminate the full scope of this exciting field. An expert known for bringing the past vividly to life, Dr. Bellinger has investigated sites in Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Drawing on that global experience, she shows how to read artifacts not just as objects, but as clues to a rich and often surprising story.
You’ll explore astonishing finds like the Antikythera Mechanism, a 2,000-year-old computer; Ötzi the Iceman, whose remains reveal a tale of murder in the Alps; and the mysterious Voynich Manuscript, which still defies interpretation. You’ll also examine persistent the Holy Grail, the Library of Alexandria, and the Galloway Hoard, with its strange mix of Viking silver and Eastern silk.
Also, uncover the secrets of Stonehenge and its vast ritual landscape; investigate the brutal, unrecorded conflict at the Tollense Battlefield; and consider the curious Roman Dodecahedrons, whose function remains unknown. Along the way, you’ll ponder the Labyrinth of Crete, trace the rise and fall of Neanderthals, and follow the fate of Rome’s lost Ninth Legion.
This course isn’t just about what we’ve found—it’s about how we think. You’ll learn to weigh evidence, ask sharper questions, and distinguish fact from speculation. And you’ll discover that even the humblest objects can become opportunities for insight.

Well, today I learned that a USA engineer returned stolen Stonehenge rock to England in 2019 - only 60 years later...and added/solved more Stonehenge mysteries!
I learned a lot, to be honest, as some of the material covered I had never heard of the discoveries or the mysteries either! And we'll only keep finding more artifacts in the future, so the mysteries are always evolving. The PDF file included was an added bonus, even if it wasn't all cool updated photos.

If you have more than a passing interest in history then this is a great audiobook for you. I loved listening to the amazing mysteries that have been uncovered by archaeology, as well as some of the fallacies that occur while trying to figure out what certain objects could be. This is a very interesting, if geeky, dive into history, archeology, and mysteries uncovered in life!
Overall pretty good course. Some topics were extremely fascinating, while others less so. The specific speaking style of the presenter was helpful for the better topics and made the others worse. So a pretty balanced course overall, not the first choice but not bad.
I truly enjoyed listening to more facts about some of the great architectural places that I have visited in Europe and the Mediterranean. I especially enjoyed the parts about Stonehenge.
