Great book for German beginners, some of the words have been updated now, so are spelled differently, so keep your dictionary close!

A very funny story, ideal for children, or for people learning German! Many interesting idiomatic expressions make this an interesting read for learners.

The following impressions are based on the illustrations alone of this story as I’m not a native speaker.

Wilhelm, H., & Vraa, M. (translator). (1995). Sylvester og Arthur praler om kap. Denmark : Bogklubben Ramus.

Language: Hindi

Characters: Horace, a lion. Sylvester, the snake.

Setting: Sahara-like Desert

Themes: Teamwork, Friendship

Genre: CSULB Class 2 Picture Book, Children’s Fiction

Summary: Horace, a lion and Sylvester, a snake are having tea and crumpets by a riverbank. Both dream of being worshipped by others. Horace thinks he/she is incredibly strong, where Sylvester boasts that he/she is an intellectual bookworm. The two get into a disagreement on the matter and are at odds until a race to see who’s faster leads them into a pit trap. Now they dream as life as servants. With vultures hovering above, they use teamwork to get out of the trap -- and walk away toward their future as friends.

Target Audience: Young elementary, grades K-2

Curriculum Ties: Overcoming Differences, Teamwork, Friendship

Personal response: I have no background in Danish, but I found the story extremely easy to follow due to clear and direct communication from the illustrations. This is a story about overcoming selfishness and bravado, and working together to achieve common goals.

“The Big Boasting Battle” talks about one lion and one snake are friends, and they always boasted of their advantages and believe they were the best ever. When they were racing to demonstrate that they are good at running, both of them felled in a trap. After they help each other out of the trap, they were graceful of the other’s strong points instead of only seeing their own. They learned to respect and appreciate each other more.
This theme is universal. Many children’s literature addresses the theme. I believe that this is a good book to teach students to cooperate. There is a similar Chinese story called Snipe and the clam, but it does not have a happy ending. The fisherman caught them both, because they were showing off that they were the best.
I like the story “The Big Boasting Battle” also because of it illustration. The facial expression of the lion and snake is so vivid. I think that students will like the watercolor book because it is rich in color.

This is a very cute book about a lion and a snake whoa re competing to see who is the smartest and strongest of the kingdom. Horace the lion and Sylvester the snake Boast about all the ways they are better than the other. Until they get into trouble and they have to work together to get free. I would use this book for grades K-3. It would be a great introductory lesson on how we are all different but special in our own way.

Since this book is written in Dutch, I thought the pictures told a story. I would use this book to my class and have them create a story from the pictures. The ICDL website actually has this book translated into English. It would be a lot of fun to hear the stories the children come up with and them compare it to the real story.
