Jenni L. Walsh

16 books640 followers
Jenni L. Walsh is the USA Today bestselling author of over a dozen books for adults and children, spending her days knee deep in words in Philadelphia’s suburbia. Beyond words, Jenni is a mama (of a soulful eleven-year-old, a soccer-loving nine-year-old, and six needy furbabies), a wife, a Philly and 'Nova sports fan.

But where did it all begin? Jenni spent her early years dabbling in various forms of writing and with her nose in a book. Her writing chops first began to develop through one-page stories. Never fail, the storyline followed the same progression: girl meets boy, girl marries boy, girl and boy have baby. That's it.

Now Jenni has moved on to stories with a bit more depth and, for the mamas, Side by Side is a historical women's fiction story of America’s most infamous crime spree of Bonnie and Clyde told in the raw and honest voice of the woman who lived it, Bonnie Parker. In Becoming Bonnie, a prequel set in the Roaring Twenties, a picture of Bonnie's earlier life, before and while she meets Clyde, is brought to life. Jenni's third historical women's fiction book A Betting Woman takes us to the California gold rush, featuring a little known woman from history, Eleanor Dumont, but who is largely remembered by the moniker Madame Moustache. In The Call of the Wrens, Jenni introduces readers to the Women's Royal Naval Service (the Wrens), who carried wartime secrets on their shoulders as motorcycle dispatch riders during both world wars. Unsinkable is Jenni's first bestselling novel, hitting the USA Today bestsellers list, and is about two resilient women, one of which is the real-life Violet Jessop who survived the Titanic and two additional maritime disasters. Jenni's next historical novel Ace, Marvel, Spy features Alice Marble, who was the world's number one women's tennis player, an editor for the Wonder Woman comics, and a spy during the Second World War. Up next from Jenni, in October 2025, is Sonora, a historical novel about performer Sonora Carver, one of the first women to dive from a forty-five foot tower on the back of a horse and who inspired the film Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken.

For the kiddos, Jenni's debut middle grade books, She Dared, features true stories from women who, at a young age, accomplished daring feats of perseverance and bravery. She is also the author of I Am Defiance, inspired by a real-life resistance group, known as the White Rose. Jenni has contributed Hettie and the London Blitz: A World War II Survival Story to the Girl's Survive series. Revolutionary War hero Sybil Ludington, who is often known as the "female Paul Revere," is brought to life in By the Light of Fireflies, Jenni's first historical novel with a touch of magical realism. Over and Out is a thrilling and fast-paced espionage and escape story that is inspired by real stories of life in East Berlin during the Cold War. Operation: Happy, set during the attack on Pearl Harbor, tells the story of a real-life survivor and includes the POV of her dog, Happy, to soften the events of one of America's most notable moments in history. In May 2025, Jenni is excited to be releasing her first contemporary novel, a mystery/adventure story called The Bug Bandits, which is inspired by a real heist and the shenanigans of Home Alone.

'Diving...like this...with a horse...for everyone to see...for everyone to celebrate...felt like the most natural thing in the world to me. Sonora and her diving horse. That's who I am now'.

Things are tight in Sonora's household. After their dad left, Sonora was forced to help chip in to the family's income by doing a mundane job that keeps her desk-bound and her natural exuberance restrained. When her mother encourages her to answer a job ad, asking for a girl who can dive and ride horses, it seems more like a ridiculous joke than an opportunity. Little did either of them know - this was destiny, 'Soaring through the air with that magnificent animal is her job'. For the next 20 years, touring around America, diving with horses, and drawing crowds in their thousands to watch with awe, is her life - even after a dire accident makes it seem impossible to carry on.

This is why I like reading historical fiction. Where else would you learn about such a unique and courageous lady? Indeed, where else would you learn that horses have a natural ability to dive - from great heights at that? Jenni Walsh, brings Sonora's story and voice to life in this book inspired by her autobiography. Historical fiction lovers will enjoy her latest.

'I'd like to shake your hand, because I think you're the most exceptional person I've ever met'.

1923, Waycross, Georgia. Sonora Webster’s mother reads the positions vacant section in the newspaper, and discovers Doctor W. F. Carver is looking for a new lead diver, after waiting and thinking her mum is crazy, Sonora eventually starts training at his ranch and winter base.

His son Allen isn’t sure she's strong enough, because Sonora needs to mount a running horse as it reaches the top of a 12 to 18 metre tower, hold on as it leaps and plunges into a man-made pool of water, and not get thrown off, trapped or drown.

They travel America’s carnival circuit, Sonora discovers show business isn’t all glitz and glamour, and she has to compete against human cannonballs and aerial acts, clowns and juggling bears, sell tickets and deal with the pressure and danger of what she does.

While Sonora gets the adventure she's been craving, she misses her family and little sister Arnette. Endures the constant snooping and investigations by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (they never found any evidence of ill treatment or neglect of the horses) and eventually Atlantic City’s Steel Pier became the acts permanent home.

I received a copy of Sonora by Jenni L. Walsh from NetGalley and HarperCollins Focus in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed this novel, it’s based around the life of Sonora Webster the first female horse diver in America and her mount Red Lips

A narrative about a woman who loved horses and riding them, she’s quoted as saying “they did all the work and she had to do is hold on” Sonora was daring, brave, inspirational and courageous lady.

My only minor issues with the story are, it wasn’t mentioned how the Great Depression affected carnivals and the odd word that didn’t suit the time and era.

Five stars from me and I recommending this emotional and entertaining read.

SEABISCUIT meets ANNE OF GREEN GABLES.

Pre-Read Notes:

I grew up on Disney's movie Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken, and this book is based on the same historical figures, so I figured it was a good fit!

"I slide off Red, two hands catching me. Two hands I knew would be there."

Final Review

(thoughts & recs) This is an enjoyable historical fiction novel that empowers girls and women in a time when girls and women had very little power. The pace and narrative voice are addicting, and the audiobook narrator does a great job. It's a little sweet, though; seriously, this time in history was very hard on women and girls, and I don't think this narrative makes space for that. Still a great read, and I enjoyed it on audiobook.

I recommend this to readers of women's and historical fiction, and fans of Jojo Moyes will definitely enjoy this one.

My Favorite Things:

✔️ "If a millionaire walks down the street and sees an item in a storefront he wants to buy, he goes in and buys it without a second thought. That's how I feel about courage, because I've always had ample amounts of it. Having courage is just as natural as having fingernails." (00:09:10) It's interesting to think of courage as a kind of currency, but it is in a way. I've also never thought of it like this, as a personality trait, but again, it kind of is. I have it and it brings me no end of trouble lol!

✔️ Strong pace keeps this story moving! I think the author sugarcoats the era quite a lot, but it makes for a positive, charming read. Nice style in general.

✔️ I like the exploration of feminist history like work opportunities for women in the era.

✔️ It's a nice plot and I like it (mostly), but it's basically the exact same plot as the movie I mentioned -- Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken.

Content Notes: poor mental health representation (hoarding), verbal abuse, child labor, professional rivalry, job insecurity, animal injury, show animals, heights, workplace injury, grievous injury, sudden disability

Thank you to Jenni L. Walsh, Harper Muse Audiobooks, and NetGalley for an advance listening copy of SONORA. All views are mine.

Sonora sheds light on a fascinating true character - an American woman who was one of the first female horse divers.

Sonora Webster, after seeing the High-Diving Horse Act, is mesmerized and instantly knows what she wants to do in life: be part of the history created by Dr. W. F. Carver. But it comes with sacrifices. She must leave behind home and family to be on the road, performing.

At almost twenty, she begins practicing the dives intensely, both on her own and with the horse. The act gives her a thrilling sense of freedom. As someone who adores horses and craves adventure, her spirit quickly shines through her performances. As a result, she captures the attention of crowds and newspapermen alike.

The dimensions of the protagonist are beautifully explored - her grueling training, the tense relationship with her trainer Al (the owner’s son), and her belief that Al dislikes her and is begrudging training her. After learning about Al’s strained relationship with his father, she begins to soften toward him and question her own feelings. Her emotions are stirred.

Even though she’s completed the dive many times, nerves still flare - especially when she spots a man in the audience investigating alleged cruelty to the horses. Then she learns the real story: the man is after the owner himself, not the animals. These layered tensions are well presented.

When an accident leaves her blind, Sonora becomes bitter about life. Her sister, a straight shooter, shows her that she can still live a full, meaningful life. And when another threat emerges – a potential shut down the show - Sonora gathers the courage to dive again. Except now, she must learn to rely on her other senses to avoid being toppled by the horse in the water.

Sonora vividly captures the spirit of a woman who craved an extraordinary life. When life through a major challenge at her during her heyday, she faltered - but then got back up and regained her momentum. She became the epitome of what life is about: pursuing happiness and rising after a fall. Her story is an inspiration, not just for what she achieved, but for how she handled adversity and kept going, encouraging others to do the same.

The writing is captivating, with suspenseful scenes that take the reader on a rollercoaster ride alongside a character larger than life.

Loved this Book and had Audio as well. Perfect Combination. Could listen and loved the narrator, and also read along which helped me absorb so much information as I knew nothing about this event. You will Route for Sonora and also the horses she dives with.

Sonora is the First Woman that was a Horse Diver. Set right before the Great Depression in 1923, The Traveling Carnival was such an exciting event. Sonora takes to this life right away and she is given a chance to really start living. She has a special affinity for this frightening diving. Makes me feel special warmth to these horses. Such a captivating story, as I had never heard Horse Diving before.

Incredible that Sonora was able to do so much. She loves the horses she uses and I was so drawn to them as well. Felt very protective of them. Beautiful and Interesting Story that covers a long period of her life. This is my Second Book by Jenni Walsh and glad I found this new author. Her books cover strong women doing different things than are unexpected of them. Fantastic.

Thank You NetGalley, HarperCollins Focus, and Harper Muse Audiobooks. I always leave reviews of books I read.

Ladies and gentlemen!
Enter circus life, early 20th century, when diving with horses apparently was all the rage.
I'm not an activist but I don't like animals being used to perform tricks. However, this book is different. The animals are loved and treated with great care and respect. I also learned they actually chose to dive.
Yes, the story evolves around Sonora, a female diver, but there is so much more. Life on the road, the comradery, good times and very bad, friendship and romance.
The characters are attractive, the conversation deep and at times emotional, the setting dynamic.
If you're looking for a feelgood novel, Sonora is it. Based on a true story this is an outstanding read, gripping and fast paced.

Thank you Netgalley and Harper Muse for the ARC.

Sonora Webster comes from a poor family and needs to be able provide for herself. As a swimmer and diver, she convinces a carnival owner thay she is capable.to dive on a horse from a height of fifty feet. This life is dangerous and unpredictable as well as nomadic. Sonora proves her capability and marries the ringmaster. After a tragic accident, she continues to live a full life. This is a story of a female trailblazer, breaking norms, courage, resilience and persistence. I found this true story to be inspiring and uplifting. I read multiple formats at once and found the narration by Piper Goodeve to be excellent and emotional.📚🎧

I fell in love with Sonora's story as a kid growing up watching Disney's Wild hearts can't be broken and I'm sooooo happy to report that Jenni Walsh did her story justice in her latest book about the high diving horses of the 1920s.

Full of romance, show magic and a strong female character that doesn't let blindness get her down. This is a story everyone can root for and it was especially great to read during Disability Pride Month.

Easily my new favorite by the author and one I will continue to recommend over and over again!! Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital and audio copy in exchange for my honest review!!

This was such an incredible read from start to finish! So glad I got to read it ahead of pub date. I was obsessed with the movie Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken, so when I saw that this book was coming out, I knew I NEEDED to read it! It was my first book by this author, and it most certainly won’t be my last. I was enthralled the entire time reading Sonora’s story. Makes me want to ride a horse (not dive on it though 😉) again soon..I love them so much. Such beautiful creatures!

Highly recommend this book!

There is so much to love about this story, This is one of those books that makes you want to research and learn more about the real people represented in the story.

First, I have to say that I'm discovering historical fiction about strong, brave women has become one of my favorites. Growing up most of the history taught was about men's accomplishments (unless of course it was a wife of one of these men) and it still amazes me how little to none I ever learned about women in history. I had never heard of Sonora Webster prior to reading this book. I am thankful to the author for sharing more about her story in such a sweet and exciting way. I loved the bond shared between Sonora and her sister, Arnette. It felt like a privilege to follow along Sonora's story from childhood to becoming a woman. The love and respect Sonora had for the horses was endearing. Sonora's husband, Al portrayed as being supportive and caring towards Sonora. This story was just so refreshing and inspiring!

Have you ever read a book that even in its opening chapters you knew was going to enter your heart and brain and live rent free there for awhile? I am so lucky to have a friendship and a partnership with an author like Jenni L Walsh- someone who can take a real life woman and take her own words and create a larger than life character.

Many people know of Sonora Webster and the diving horses from the 1993 movie WILD HEARTS CANT BE BROKEN this movie broke my heart when I was 11 and made me want to know more about horses. But finding out that Sonora herself didn’t like some of the changes made me happy that her real story will be told.

Wild, beautiful, tenacious and brave these are the words that describe Sonora. From being the child who took care of her siblings to being the courageous woman who took on Doc and his dreams to finally a brave woman who made a disability a strength

Cried and cheered through this novel. Beyond grateful to have had an early read

Sonora by Jenni L. Walsh

Thank You NetGalley and Harper Collins Focus for a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
I always look forward to reading Jenni Walsh’s books!!! They are based off of real-life events and makes learning about less known history fund and captivating! Before reading Sonora, I had not even heard of horse divers! Sonora Webster’s mother answers an ad during the Great Depression where Dr. Carver is looking for a diver. So, Sonora agrees to train and Dr. Carver’s son, Allen is tasked with teaching Sonora all the ins and outs. He has his doubts at first. Afterall, she’ll need to mount a horse as it’s running towards her on a 40-foot platform just in time to dive down while on the horse’s back, all without getting injured. Sonora surpasses their expectations, and she becomes a permanent act. She becomes one of the first female horse divers and is seen as a resilient, courageous, and brave woman. While diving one day, she encounters a terrible accident that could end her horse diving career. But the accident just proves how truly adventurous and resilient Sonora was!!! I enjoyed Sonora’s story so much; I did not want it to end. To enjoy her story for yourselves, look for it when it comes out October 28, 2025!

When Jenni Walsh told me she was writing a novel about Sonora Carver, the real-life “girl who dives horses” from Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken, I knew instantly it would be a must-read for me. I grew up loving that movie, but Sonora gave me so much more than nostalgia.

Walsh clearly did her homework; she even read Sonora Carver’s autobiography, and the depth of research shows on every page. The historical details, the grit of the Depression-era carnival life, and the emotional honesty made this an immersive portrait of a young woman with extraordinary determination.

Sonora herself is nothing short of inspiring. Reading her story made me feel braver, more willing to take leaps (maybe not from a 40-foot platform into a pool, but still!). Her courage, resilience, and refusal to let life’s challenges define her are a reminder of the strength we all carry inside us.

If you loved Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken, or simply enjoy stories about real women who dared to live boldly, this book will leave you both moved and motivated.

Sonora lives with her mother and siblings in GA. She is 19 and her mom thinks it’s time for her to move out. She answers an ad to dive with horses and she finds something that she is very passionate about. They travel around the US with their show. One day, there is an accident and it’s very unclear if Sonora will be able to continue diving.

This is a story of determination, love, secrets and so much more. I loved Sonora and her bravery! If you have ever seen WILD HEARTS CAN’T BE BROKEN, this story will be very familiar to you. Pleased read the author notes at the end of the book.

I listened to the audio of this book and the narration was very good. This book is available on Oct 28 so get that pre order in now!!

This book made my horse-loving self soooo happy! I'm sure I'm not the only one out there who feel even more in love with horses (and secretly wanted to be a high-diving horse girl) after watching Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken in the theater!!! It's a favorite memory of mine, sitting in the movie theater with my mom and sister and best friend. The lights dimming and watching this plucky girl having to sell her horse, seeing a newspaper ad, and sneaking off on her own to answer that add. Then the adventure of training, diving, falling in love, heartbreak, sorrow, and so much more! It was etched into my heart forever. My best friend and I instantly got home from the theater and jumped on our bicycles and pretended that we were Sonora and our bikes were our brave horses named Lightening! Then jump ahead many years and showing that movie to my own children when they were old enough and watching the love and wonder in their eyes.

When I saw this book I was soooo excited. Excited to dive back into this incredible story. I loved the author's notes and learning before starting listening to the audiobook, that this story was based on the real life Sonora's memoir. And coming to realize while listening how her story was adapted quite a bit for the movie. Which was great and worked. But I loved this audiobook so much! And the author's note at the end telling us more about Sonora's life way past where this book ends, and the movie ended as well. I'll tell you that I teared up at the ending, and at the author's note about Sonora's family and life!

She truly was an incredible woman! It made me sit back and ponder about how we can all be incredible in our own way and make an impact in our own little world; our community, our family, or bigger, or smaller. So many ways to make a difference. If we find something that calls to our heart and can bring kindness to those around us. Let's do it and make a difference!

If you have no idea about the movie I was referencing or anything about Sonora Webster, READ this book, or listen to the audiobook! It truly is an incredible story of family, friendships, persevering, working hard, heartbreak, hardships, honest to goodness lasting love, hope, and so much more! Jenni L. Walsh created a beautiful story from an incredible woman's life that will touch your heart. The narrator had me feeling like I was listening to Sonora and being right next to her through her ups and downs, sorrows and joys. I loved every moment of it and will definitely be revisiting this one. And recommending it to everyone! And I'm sure I'm going to go indulge in watching a movie here soon!!!

Thanks to LibraryThing & Harper Muse for an advance reader copy. All comments and opinions are my own unless otherwise noted.

Loved this amazing novel inspired by the life of Sonora Webster, a spunky, courageous, independent young woman who becomes one of the first female horse divers in the US.

Jenni L. Walsh has crafted a well-researched and un-put-downable novel that tells of the experiences of life on the carnival circuit in the 1920s. She recreates a world of danger and daring, excitement and entertainment. Our memorable main character, Sonora, takes on this lifestyle and rises beyond the challenges to make the story one of grit, bravery, and inspiration.

This beautifully written novel combines Sonora’s love of horses with her desire to follow her dreams. I enjoyed the themes of family (both actual and found), community, and determination to overcome extreme challenges. This could also be included in a book list for Young Adult readers. I highly recommend.

Thank you to Harper Collins/Harper Muse for providing me with a gifted ebook copy of Sonora through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

When I saw Sonora as an ARC on NetGalley, I knew I had to read it. Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken is one of my all-time favorite movies, and I have always loved the history of Sonora Webster and her time diving with horses. Walsh brings Sonora's character to life, just as beautifully as it's done in the movie, and the various changes in Walsh's storytelling gives a fresh take on Sonora's story.

I enjoyed the fact that Walsh based her story more on Sonora's own memoir, giving us a different look into her family relationships. The story also brings in a bit more depth showing the struggles that Sonora endured following her accident. Walsh also does a beautiful job with the relationship between Sonora and Al, showing their fears and the ability to change and continue to follow their love for one another over the years.

"Sonora" was an okay book. I usually enjoy biographies, so I was very much looking forward to reading this book and to learning more about what 'horse diving' was. When I first looked it up online, before even opening this book, I couldn't believe horses could willingly jump from such a height into a swimming pool!

While I enjoyed reading about Sonora, her life and her adventures, I felt that the book wasn't particularly well written. The pace was sometimes off, and most events were not described in enough details, you didn't have time to feel immersed in the moment and get attached to characters, it immediately moved on to another moment. The romance was lukewarm at best.

While I still liked this book, I think I would have preferred to read Sonora's autobiography rather than a book which might not be entirely accurate. However, I can say I really enjoyed learning more about horse diving, and I don't find it as cruel as I first thought (although I wouldn't encourage its come back).

This book was beautiful and truly is for all the wild hearts that can’t be broken.

Sonora wants a life that is her own, one filled with what ignites a passion her, and she sets off to find it in spite of her fears, only to learn that she is nearly fearless. Ultimately, she finds two passions but it’s love for a man that she fears more than diving off a 40-foot platform on horseback. As Sonora grows and learns through hardship, loss, and joy, she discovers more about herself than she thought she could.

Reading the story told in Sonora’s voice gives it a greater sense of realism, though occasionally the language feels a bit stiff and at other times anachronistic. Even so, the story shines through and it’s difficult not to find love in all the places Sonora does. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone chasing a dream.

Book Report: Sonora

At First Glance: My mind immediately thought… Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken

The Gist: Inspired by a true story of one of the first female horse divers, Sonora explores a world of daring feats and extraordinary adventures set in the heyday of the American carnival scene.

My Thoughts: As someone who grew up loving Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken🎬🐎 I was immediately drawn to Sonora…and it did not disappoint. Jenni L. Walsh brings the remarkable story of Sonora Webster Carver to life in such a vivid & heartfelt way💫I’ve always been fascinated by stories inspired by real people and events, and this one hit all the right notes. The world of horse diving is both thrilling and emotional…and Walsh captures the grit…courage….and resilience it demanded. Her determination and spirit are truly inspiring.

While there were a few slower moments in the pacing…they didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment. If anything…they gave me time to reflect on the weight of what Sonora was experiencing. I still found myself fully immersed and eager to learn more with every page. This book is a must read for anyone who loves historical fiction with a strong female lead…and especially for fans of Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken.

My Question for Jenni: Are you a lifelong horse lover, or did writing Sonora turn you into one?

Jenni Walsh once again has written a very captivating story based on a true story and a real person! I loved Ace, Marble, Spy so when I heard about Sonora I was super excited for this one! I had no background understanding of what horse diving was and I had never seen the Disney movie either so I came into this with zero context.

Sonora's story is one of resilience and incredible strength and power. Horse diving with a 21st century lens sounds really wild but in the context of the time period and the entertainment of the first half of the 1900s, it's incredible. I really love stories that highlight female athletes so this book is right up my alley. I loved the author's note at the end that explains more of how the real life events were fictionalized for the story.

The story is incredibly well done, entertaining and informative. I really enjoyed the audiobook as well read by Piper Goodeve. You can hear the strength behind Sonora's voice and the way that she cared for the animals and Al.

Thank you to NetGalley and Uplit Reads for access to the gifted digital copy and audiobook versions for me to read prior to the release date for my feedback!

I received a free physical and audio advance copy for review.

I switched between the physical and audio versions and either is a great way to go. The narrator captured the feel and voice of the main character really well and was very easy to listen to.

Have you seen the 90s film Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken? This new historical fiction is all about the woman the film focused on but is actually closer to the true story!

I loved the movie many years ago but haven’t seen it in a long time and I purposely waited until after reading before rewatching it so I wouldn’t be directly comparing them. I remembered the huge plot point that both focused on but not a lot in between so the story still felt very fresh and intriguing. In comparing them afterwards there are plenty of similarities but also many big differences. I loved some of the things the book explored that were never touched on in the movie. And you absolutely do not have to have any prior knowledge of Sonora’s life or the movie before reading this.

The author crafted a great story that captured the strength and determination of an impressive woman. I loved following through her journey and all the highs and lows as well as her interactions with all the side characters. All the horse content was fun too as our family has had a lot more horse exposure in our life the last couple months as my girls started taking horse riding lessons.

Trigger/content notes: grief. Spice level is closed door.

I received a finished copy from the publisher via LibraryThing Early Reviewers.

I've been familiar with the story of Sonora Carver and her diving horses since I was 11 and saw "Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken" in a hometown movie theater. As a horse lover, I was captivated by the story of a teenager running away from home to join a diving horses road show, and I was also very concerned about the welfare of the horses.

Walsh takes on Sonora's story based on the memoir but, according to the author's note, made an effort to be far more accurate than the movie version. I couldn't resist watching the movie on Disney+ as I started to read the novel. There are major differences; only the very heart of the story is true, of young Sonora joining the act, starting a relationship with Al, and then enduring a major health crisis (I will not reveal that spoiler in my review).

The book is well-written. People need have no experience with horses or have seen the movie version, though I will say that this novel is far better than the movie. The movie does not hold up well; not only does it gloss over the peril that the horses go through, but the romance aspect is very cringey because Sonora is depicted a run away high schooler.

Now, to focus on the story. The tale begins in 1923 Georgia (not the 1930s as in the movie), with Sonora's mother prodding her to answer a newspaper ad for a young woman who likes to swim, dive, and ride horses. She is soon hired by Doc Carver. The training process for herself and the horses is described in great detail, and is fascinating. Great emphasis is placed on the fact that the horses jump because they want to, and are never whipped or spurred. While the book does have the romance between her and Al, it is a gradual, realistic thing and is not the focus of the book--it is really about Sonora's resilient spirit, especially through the end.

Questions at the back make this ready made for book clubs. I know I'd like to suggest this for the clubs I'm in, as it's the perfect kind of historical fiction read where you learn about a little-known aspect of history.

"All that's left is stepping from the platform to a train car. Who knew one step could be so frightening?"

"...the notion that even in undesirable moments, there is a hidden beauty and the potential for growth."

"...there are times when reason and emotions do not align."

"Growing up is losing some illusions, in order to acquire others."

"Goodness gracious, I didn't think those would be thoughts I'd ever be having. But he broke me in the best way, the way a good trainer earns the trust of a horse. Here l am, a woman in the right hands."

"Sonora," he says, an endless amount of love in his voice. "I'll always be here."

Thank you to Jenni Walsh for the advanced copy of Sonora!

Inspired by the remarkable true story of Sonora Webster Carver and the historic Horse Diving Act, Sonora takes readers on a compelling journey through the life of one of the first female horse divers. From her humble beginnings as a Southern girl with big dreams to her rise to fame with the Carver Horse Diving Act, Sonora’s story is one of courage, ambition, and resilience. After a tragic accident alters the course of her life, she must find the strength to rebuild and redefine what’s possible—all while facing impossible odds.

As a horse rider myself, I was especially drawn to Sonora’s gritty determination and unbreakable spirit. Having experienced my own riding accidents, I’m always inspired by those who get back on—head held high, refusing to be defeated. Sonora’s story is a powerful reminder of what it means to persevere, even when the path forward is unclear.

*** BOOK REVIEW*** Book out 10/28/2025

Ok, when I saw this on NetGalley my heart about leapt from my chest. This book is a fictional take about Sonora Webster the high diving horse girl in the 1920s. Sound familiar? Well if you grew up watching Disney movies in the 90s it should. This is the same Sonora Webster in the Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken movie. BUT! Don’t go in expecting the same story. There are some similarities given she was a real person in history but there are many differences from the movie to give it a new life. I won’t spoil them, but the changes provided in the book versus the movie make the story just a little bit more realistic than a Disney movie. That should come at no surprise. I absolutely loved revisiting this story and Sonora and Al, and of course Doc. Be still my heart.

Thank you NetGalley, the publisher and the author for getting a free audiobook copy in exchange for an honest review!

I loved watching “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken” as a teen, which is also based on this true story, but the way Jenni Walsh brought these people and their situations and history to life was riveting. The narrator did a phenomenal job of voicing this story and allowing this tale to live in my mind and heart. This book is sooo much more than the movie and so much more true-to-life.

Sonora was such a precocious and spunky young lady, and it was fascinating to discover how she came to be the rider on a horse diver. The whole show business aspect was so interesting and after marrying Al, this enterprise encompassed their whole entire life together. I love horses and the bond Sonora shared with hers, the way she intimately knew them, warmed my heart.

The themes of resilience, perseverance, and courage, especially when the twists of life appeared, made this one a breathtaking and engaging listen.

Content: mild romance; moments of danger/peril; talk of injuries/blindness

Oh my goodness! I couldn't stop reading/listening to this book! I was sucked in to this beautiful true story of Sonora! I loved the writing and the narration! Such a gripping story of a girl who was so strong and brave - I was so amazed by the truth of it all. Personally, just riding on a horse fast is frightening to me - to be jumping into water on a fast horse - had me holding my breath soooo many times! Such passion and dedication from someone who found what she was born to do! It's interesting to me that they no longer do it at all!!! Loved it!
